The core loop of kill enemies, buy random items, find and kill the boss, proceed to the next stage and repeat was done excellently and with the (at the moment) 10 completely different characters with multiple alternative attacks, the many stages, enemies and of course items you won't get bored so easily.
Unlockable artifacts can spice up your game like team damage, for you and the enemies double the enemies or choosing what items you get you to play additional hours, even more if you can play with friends.

And if all of that is not enough for you there are dozens upon dozens of fan made mods on thunderstore. There are all kinds of different mods, from entire new characters like the bandit from the first game, goku from dragonball or different LoL characters to completely new items, difficulties etc. I advise to install a mod manager to easily choose whit which mods to play as the moving and deleting the files in the game files can and will become tedious. The best/easiest to operate is (at the moment of writing this) r2modman.

There’s hundreds of hours of fun to be had in RoR2, if you approach it with the right mindset and sometimes a friend or two. It’s not for everyone, but I found it a lot more forgiving than e.g. Dark Souls, and it’s got a Chris Christodoulou soundtrack to boot, so your ears will enjoy themselves even when you reach your inevitable and abrupt demise.

For what it is, it's just about perfect, the most videogame of all videogames. An exercise in how RNGesus can elevate your humble survivor from weak obscurity to near godlike power. Unlock a cast of 9 survivors that are all their own unique gameplay style. Discover and earn Artifacts that change how the whole game plays. And once you learn the ropes, drop down to the planet with a few friends so you can all have YASD together.

Risk of Rain 2 stands tall among the best roguelites ever made, evoking memories of Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac

I loved the original Risk of Rain and really, really wanted to like the sequel. Unfortunately, the switch from 2D to 3D did no favors. The game looks generic and plays poorly. I didn't play until the full release and now that it's fully released I'm sad to say that it plays like a day 1 early access game. It's just a big, sloppy, janky mess of stuff that doesn't work together. This gameI loved the original Risk of Rain and really, really wanted to like the sequel. Again, huge fan of the original (and Deadbolt) but for me, this is a big swing and a bigger miss. Expand

A shooter with a roguelike’s soul, Risk of Rain 2 is pretty much devoid of any deeper meaning, but at the same time perfectly executed and brilliant in its simplicity. [11/2020, p.33]

Risk of Rain 2 does a great job at creating an engaging world full of frantic moments, although sometimes its procedural features get in the way.

We have finally lived through the full release of Risk of Rain 2. With the full release comes a new character, who is excellent, and a true final level, final boss, and an ending. On top of that, we get even more excellent music from Chris Christodoulou. It cements Risk of Rain 2 as one of the best roguelikes of all time, and certainly one of the best co-op roguelikes too. There are a couple of things I was hoping to see with the full release, like more skills for the other survivors, but I’m sure they’ll arrive somewhere down the line. As it stands, if you’ve not played Risk of Rain 2, you’re doing yourself a disservice.
