I received mine after pre-ordering it (original Rise of Flight release) and have been enjoying it ever since. Like all new games there were a few bugs and areas that needed to be refined, but those have all been addressed. What is exceptionally nice is that you have developers who have been continuing to work and further develop this game.

    I just wanted to thank the developers for a great game, and I am still looking to the future with continued hope as this WWI Combat Flight Sim gets better and better.

    This is now the definitive WWI Combat Flight Sim, and perhaps the definitive Combat Flight Sim.

If you want to play for Free, all you need do is dnload it and play with the 2 or 3 planes that are Free, but if ya really like flight sims then you can register and buy more planes. Yes, you do have to buy more planes, but the reason for that is the constant developer work on adding planes, maps, bug fixes and excellent up-to-date graphics sound, and realism. This sim is not for everyone because it does have a learning curve. If you want arcade play then you might look else where. If you want a sim with WOW graphics, sound and fantastic game play then look no further, This Is It!… Expand

    The graphics are exceptional and the planes are depicted in amazing detail. While I'm no expert on the flight characteristics of WWI aircraft, the planes in Rise of Flight handle like the books suggest they should - the rotaries have serious torque, the triplanes climb nicely, and Camel is a spin waiting to happen. There are options to simplify the flight models in various ways, but each of the planes remains unique in its own way. And all are a pleasure to fly with any standard joystick.

    In addition to the scouts, flyable two-seaters and bombers are available, and you can man the gun turrets in them.

    The graphics and flight model variety come with a cost: Rise of Flight requires an upper mid-level system to run well. Take the system requirements seriously.

    The game has numerous scripted and quick missions, and a few mini campaigns, but it currently lacks a robust campaign system ala Red Baron. The developer has one scheduled for the next update, though. The product is very well supported with periodic updates and has an active multiplayer community. There also are a wide variety of user-made airplane skins, many of which the developer has added to the official game.

    The game requires online activation upon first installation and for updates, but can be played in offline mode otherwise. As anti-piracy measures go, it's pretty benign.

The flight model, the physics model and the damage model are second to none, the graphics absolutely stunning in the highest details settings. Flying one of the today available 26 historically very well researched and precisely modelled airplanes is highly rewarding. No other flight model in any other flight sim can provide this kind of immersion yet.

    The Era of the Aviation pioneers of WWI starts to become alive this way. The maps and the weather simulation are very convincing and highly detailed. The forum is highly active and helpful, you'll encounter some real pilots here. In the version 1.021 the existing Single missions and short Campaigns and MP was enriched by the implementation of the highly anticipated new Career mode (still in BETA status but is playable and needs a permanent Online connection to be played) depicting a career from the view of a WWI pilot. Choose your side from British, French, American and German squads, all with correct locations and squadron ensignia. Go up the ranks and achieve medals while completing missions like: Balloon busting, Arty spotting, Escort, Offensive, Patrol the Line, Bombing, Recon, Alert and Solo flights.

    While beeing enthusiastly about all this great features, one should also be aware of some yet unresolved bugs (for example AI issues and some FM issues and ATI tec issues/ 777 works on a total revamp of the AI) and a lack of some needed Tutorials for special missions and a beautiful manual that does (in its current state) not explain quite many off the ingame functions (some off them were added with later patches) and leaves to desire.

    Rise of Flight was more then 2 years ago released. Since than it came a long way and was considerably enhanced by the devoted Developers, but imho its not a "closed construction" site yet. It still has a way to go until its feature complete and finally a really polished game. When this status is achieved - I have no doubt abou that - Rise of Flight will become THE best historic flightsim on the market. Period.

    Its surely made for a flightsim gamer that is willing to spend some time and energy to get accustomed to the demanding game play mechanics and flight characteristics of the each unique planes and also to find the optimal personal settings for his PC. A special note must be made regarding the uncommon Rise of Flight financial modell that 777 introduced from the start on: When I bought the game 2 years ago I had to pay for the basic game (it included a few flyable planes only) and then had the choice to individualy add more flyable planes, buying them and the optional "Field Mods" for each plane separately in the ROF store. This way the game became quite expensiv for my taste, compared to other flightsims that come "feature complete" like OFF (Over Flanders Fields; MS CFS 3 MOD) for example.

    Admirably 777 Studios changed that modell and gives now the basic game for absolutely FREE, earning only from the additional available optional planes and "Field mods" in the online store. So its your risk free choice to give it a try or not. Its surely worth it if you have enough patience...    … Expand

    I have a friend who actually owns a WW II P-40 and a WW I bi-plane, and I have been fortunate enough to have been up in both of these planes. The bi-plane doesn't jump all over the place when it is flying. It is actually pretty smooth after you take off, although there is vibration, and the is open to the wind and weather. It was a GREAT experience. I can just imagine bearing down on another of these planes in combat. These planes are touchy, and they did require maintenance. The Ones In This Game Need A Lot Of Maintenance!! They are hard to fly and you will need a descent joy stick or if you want to go All Out a stick and rudder pedals. It is a good game. My pilot friend told me that the tri wing planes planes handled better than the bi wing models. Anyway, that's my experience. I recommend the game because it is a fun game.... but Not an accurate flight sim.    … Expand

    I must admit the game is good, but that is what this is a game. It is very much like a FPS, it is not like a flight simulator, In fact a Jason Williams from 777 states:

    We'll make more announcements when we're ready.

    But you want straight talk so here it is. None of our current plans involve further FM changes. We are focused on other parts of the project and BOS.

    Please stop the drama over the FMs. It doesn't motivate us to do anything more with them. Same complaints from the same people, day in and day out. We're aware of them. ROF is not a tragic product as put above, it is a stellar product that has defied the odds. We are proud of what we have created. You should be too, but it will never be perfect for 100% of users. Just not possible with a flight-sim.

    If and when we can or choose to re-make flight models we will and we'll let you know. As I have said to all of those that continue to PM me on the subject, we have to make difficult choices on where and how we apply our resources and we'll never be able to address every feature some deem to be deficient. This product as much as it seems is not on a perpetual, forever development life-cycle. At some point we have to move on with our overall larger plans. Maybe future plans can include FM revisions, but that depends on the business climate, what the market will bare and what we can afford.

    Personally, I hope we can continue to improve ROF in different ways far into the future. I always fight for that, but there are a lot of considerations and different parties involved in such decisions.

    Straight from the horses mouth, the Flight models, the most important part of a "flight simulation" are not correct. So if you want a flight simulator, do not buy this game, but if you want a game that allows you to play with WW1 aircraft, this is the game.

    The graphics are great and it has an excellent single player, but the online community is fading away, especially after Mr. Williams remarks about the flight model problems.

    The other down side, and I should have ranked the game lower for this, is you get a core set of airplanes, which come with a minimal of instruments, then you have to buy those instruments and you also have to buy additional aircraft. It gets costly for a game that is not a real simulator.

    The community is great, but DO NOT POST anything negative about the game on their discussion board, the thread will be locked as Mr. Jason Williams feels those are "personal" attacks, just scan all the locked threads.    … Expand
