What can you say, or perhaps not say, about a franchise that is knocking on the door of its third decade, whose most recent entries collapse under the weight of a polished remaster of its first entry? Nevertheless,What can you say, or perhaps not say, about a franchise that is knocking on the door of its third decade, whose most recent entries collapse under the weight of a polished remaster of its first entry? Resident Evil has become so bloated in its sequels and spin offs, all of them underwhelming, that revisiting Spencer Mansion for the third time is sadly a breath of fresh air. Nevertheless, it is a welcomed breath of fresh air as we now have the best Resident Evil in some years. Leave it to a polished up version of a 2002 Gamecube release, which in itself was a remake of the original 1996 release of Resident Evil's starting point, to put smiles on the faces of all the devoted old school fans who have wanted the series to return to its terrifying albeit cheesy and clunky roots. Capcom achieves greatness with making the arguably best even better by tidying up the controls, graphics, textures and sound, and letting it live and breath on current generation consoles. Those who only know modern Resident Evil, or never got to play this in 2002 entry have themselves a fantastic experience ahead of them as they explore Spencer Mansion and witness the groundbreaking horror first hand with the original core characters. This game doubles as a grocery list of what Survival Horror should be, and how the modern conveniences of gaming do not always make for the best experience. This take on Resident Evil is both familiar and curious, both comfortable and nerve racking, and both full of nostalgia and yet as challenging as a never before seen adventure. So those of you who have played the original '96 game, are still in for surprises around some corners, and challenges that will make resources vital. The dialogue, though still a bit cheesy, is multiple levels up from that of the delightfully awkward original script. It remains similar enough to bring back all the memories of the original, but separates itself enough from the past to intrigue, creating an almost parallel world experience with how similar but more thought out the new dialogue is. I found myself both listening to the new, but in my head quoting the old, making for some laughs. Once again, those first person views of doors opening, tight corridors with the moaning undead near by, and limping through halls praying for ammo and health all have your hair on end, and it is a most welcome return. The Mansion is only slightly redesigned enough to make you lull into comfort, thinking you have the situation under control before springing something new on you such as a new zombie placement, or unfamiliar room, or retelling an old experience in less predictably ways. The results are fun and frightening. The Mansion is alive with creaks and shutters, moving light and flashes of lighting, shadows and mirrors, fog and water, all pulling you in deeper than ever before. This is Resident Evil in all its Survival Horror glory. It would be impossible to rate this any lower than a perfect score, seeing as it is a better version of a past masterpiece, and then improved once again on top of that. Get lost in Spencer Mansion, and take a bloody bite out of the game that started it all, the one and only, Resident Evil. Expand

Resident Evil was one of my first 3D PC games back in 90's. It's great to be able to play this amazing "HD Remake" here again like those old days. The original Remake was released in 2002 for Nintendo GameCube and I remember the game looked awesome. I bet it was hard to redo a game that was considered one of the best PSX and SEGA Saturn games but they did a fantastic work, and as PS2Resident Evil was one of my first 3D PC games back in 90's. It's great to be able to play this amazing "HD Remake" here again like those old days. The original Remake was released in 2002 for Nintendo GameCube and I remember the game looked awesome. I bet it was hard to redo a game that was considered one of the best PSX and SEGA Saturn games but they did a fantastic work, and as PS2 day-one user I was so envious of the GameCube back then :P

Recently (in 2014) I was able to play this Remake on GC and I must say even though some parts looks slightly different I am very happy to play this gem!

    Pros:
    - Of course the 1080p (scalable with a .ini modification) and the option to unlock the 60 FPS.
    - The 16:9 cropped aspect option.
    - Some little assets were re-done in 3D with the addition of some sprite details.
    - Some other details were also on the GameCube version and now we can appreciate this better. For instance, Jill dust behind her footsteps in some wooden floors.
    - The non-tank controls for newbies.
    - In general it looks great due to its original resolution. The new dynamic lighting and some other filters makes all integrate better.
    - Is good that they didn't change the original models and animations much (maybe Chris a bit).
    - Achievements. Yes, I support them for this kind of re-releases. You can approach new playthroughs to achieve something crazy like play the game in something I call "Asian Mode" haha (under 3 hours, without saving, only with the knife...well I'm exaggerating haha!...FYI they are separate achievements).

    Cons:
    - The directional controls should have been a bit heavier and less responsible to make things fair and not that easy.
    - Tank controls with analog feels bad. The solution is to use the d-pad arrows (I recommend DualShock 4 because they have a better surface).
    - The High-pass filter / convolve sometimes makes.
    - Some 3D assets like statues and mechanisms don't have any improvement in textures, normals and models.
    - It's a shame they didn't have resources to re-render the backgrounds. In Resident Evil Archives books you can see some viewport of those XSI files. So it wasn't impossible. Just "not-affordable".
    - Some menus looks pixelated.

Maybe it should have been named "RESIDENT EVIL / Biohazard HD Remake" but aside those cons I mentioned before, the game is 100% recommendable for horror fans and people who played games before the checkpoint and unlimited loot era haha! Now let's wait for the HD version of RE Zero and maybe a retail version of this amazing re-release.

BTW I wish someday Steam and Capcom releases:
    - Resident Evil (1996)
    - Resident Evil 2
    - Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (and its funny Jill / Nemesis screen-savers haha!)
    - Resident Evil Code Veronica (the one who made me buy a Dreamcast back in 2001 and who was remastered for PS3 and Xbox 360 a few years ago)
    - And why not two in-viable ones RE Gun Survivor and RE Dead Aim :3 my guilty pleasures!

    Why you deserve this game?
Because it's a good shaped remake? Because it's an old school, old fashioned, retro gaming, classic? All of this, and more, because it's actually a good game. Soundtrack memorable, pretty good visual, intriguing story and also a great, unforgettable, dark atmosphere. If you like horror games where the horror it's not just a creepy creature

This is a awesome version about the classic horror games from the nines. A mix of greatest graphics with original (or not) gameplay. Resident Evil HD Remaster is for who like horror with a lot of thriller.

This game is doing for old and newer gamers because this version (HD, Rebirth) has a lot of change of the playstation/saturn version likewise new places and rooms and new actions.

I really dont know why capcom never stuck to this formula. Perhaps they wanted to cash in on the CoD generation. Maybe they wanted to make a different kind of game. They have put this series into the wrong hands after Resident Evil 4...so many times its hard to count. And the movie....dont even get me started, what a joke. But all of this aside, this is

Terrible camera angles and bad controls come with the territory when dealing with Resident Evil..

I actually like the camera even today, it gives the game more of a spooky vibe, ofcourse this can lead to zombies eating your brains without you even being able to see them...

The controls haven't aged well at all, probably being spoiled from modern games making everything more fluid has made me realize how terrible controls were for this game back in the day.

The inventory system is a hassle as well. I ended up picking up keys and emblems but my inventory was too full to pick up some herbs or another key item, so I would have to go back and put a key item back just to be able to heal or even save with an in ink ribbon... That was probably just me being a dumbass and not knowing where to go, so extra items filled my inventory... Still annoying.

The graphics are good and the hilariously bad voice acting returns ( which I like)

I love the save system, I believe even modern games should have a save system similar to this as it builds tension and makes you think whether you should save your ink ribbon but by doing so you risk dying which means a lot of progress can be lost if you haven't used an ink ribbon in awhile.. If you run out of ink ribbons, finding another one feels so good.. The only modern game that makes me feel that tension is Dark Souls (not dark souls 2) with the bonfire system..

All in all it's a good remake. I just wish that they tweaked the controls ( just a bit) so that it is less "tanky" it just does not fit well in modern gaming, and this is coming from a person who wanted the tanky controls back, but I am now eating my words..

Anyway, pick the game up, just don't let the controls piss you off too much

Expand

    - Difficulty and item rationing are well done.

    - Cons:
    - We have two playable characters, but the story is not complementary, but taking place in different ways, without knowing exactly what the canonical one would be.
    - Mechanics a little stuck and strange. Tank control.

It's really not up for debate that this is the best version of the original RE. Even so, it's far from perfect. Maybe even more challenging than the original? I played the PC version back in the day, and I don't remember zombies taking 10 knife swipes as well as 5-6 bullets to kill, but I could be wrong. Still, the game is very tense, since every single zombie is worth worrying about and takes a lot of resources to kill, and the typewriters are not generously placed, which is good. The controls are also improved and you can move in relation to the camera if you wish. Overall, if you played the original and want to give it another shot after many years, the improvements make this worth buying. Even if you are a new player who is interested in the first chapter in the series, it is worth picking up, but keep in mind that this is not RE6. You will need to solve puzzles, you will need to explore, and you WILL die and have to repeat sections of the game since the last save. If you're cool with that, give it a shot. Expand

Capcom shows the way videogame classics should be treated. They are classics because they are over the graphics and the console generations, but an actualization is required from time to time. Nintendo is doing the same, and Kojima has already asked for HD versions of the first (and best) MGS titles.

After playing The Evil Within, I felt like I needed to go back and remind myself why I liked the horror game genre in the first place. As much as I liked the horror throwbacks that went into The Evil Within, I felt that there was something about the non-stop action that meant the game wasn't really scary. In short, I longed to get back to simpler times—when ammo was low and taking down a single zombie was a huge achievement.

It seems that I'm not the only one who has been thinking this, as Biohazard HD Remaster has just been released. I know what you are thinking, but this isn't the same game that debuted on the original PlayStation; there are more than just cosmetic changes here. You now have the option of changing the controls so that you actually move in the direction you push the control pad, for example.

That said, the biggest differences are cosmetic. Biohazard's visuals have been brought kicking and screaming (or should that be "biting and gnawing"?) into the new millennium. Widescreen is included for the first time, and players will soon wonder how they ever managed without it. Similarly indispensable is the scrolling screen that lets players see around corners in a more natural way.

As well as these visual upgrades, there are also minor audio improvements as well. Most noticable is that the game includes Japanese voice acting for the first time. Should you want to, you can listen to Jill talk about zombies in Japanese, because let's be honest: it's just cooler that way.

Also, the lore has been brought up to date. The PS2 version of Wesker's Report is featured, so you can learn a little more about the events before Biohazard via a mockumentary. In additon, you don't have to ponder why Chris and Jill took time out between zombie apolcalypses to change their wardrobe, as you can customize Chris' and Jill's outfits so they wear the clothes that appear in later editions.

While there are lots of such improvements, there are still problems with the game itself. The graphics still clip even when running at the highest rate. Additionally, they still haven't fixed my personal pet peeve, where the female protagonist stares vacantly into space during the cutscenes. C'mon love, show some emotion!

Some of the voice acting has been improved and some of it is still wooden as ever. I guess that acting like you are in a zombie apocalypse is really tough for actors to do, as even the latest incarnation, Revelations 2 ,seems to struggle on this point.

So is the game worth a purchase? After all, we are now up to Biohazard 6 and the gaming world has moved on from awkwardly-placed cameras, highly-limited supplies, and running while holding your side. Or has it?

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi would argue that even now, players still long for more simple times. When they were updating the game, they realized that "the tempo and flow of the original game are an inherent part of its scary atmosphere," according to Hirabayashi. He continues, "So we have made the decision not to disrupt this tempo ... the aim of this remaster is to bring back the original experience of this title in HD."

In short: definitely a great improvement on a nostalgic title, and probably worth the money for fans of the series, but not really anything revolutionary. (Reviewed by: Matthew Coslett, AUTOMATON Writer)

Having 2 protagonists allows you to have fun with the game a bit longer but they aren't that much different and neither are their stories so in the end it isn't much more than just an easy way to extend the playtime without adding new content. That is the only negative I have to say about this game and it is probably true for all the sequels as well. The good thing is that the developers at least didn't bother us with mindless quests and fillers to artificially extend the playtime and instead the gameplay and story are quite tense(for the lack of the better word) and engaging from the beginning until the very end.

    Story.
Unit S.T.A.R.S. was called in to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the previous unit. Chased by a deadly blood starving dogs they ran into closest mansion where things were even more suspicious. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield has to find out the truth while surviving in this big mansion filled with zombies.
    Gameplay.
You control a character from a locked in third-person cameras that are placed very smoothly across all levels. Sometimes you will feel disoriented since camera changes from different angles, but you get used to that. You have personal limited inventory where you store consumable and key items. Also there's not much variety of weapons but bullets are very limited, which makes weapons more personal and valuable.
    Graphics.
Visually game looks stunning, variety of environment is mind blowing. First I though it's just a mansion, who would've thought you visit Forest, Cabin in the woods, Basement, Laboratory, Cemetery, Tomb. Each level builds the atmosphere around you, that any second someone or something might pop out.
    Sound.
Ambient alone is good enough to be a horror element alone. There might not be a single enemy in the level, but the pressure you feel cause of the sound effects is breaking the fourth wall. It made me feel like those sounds were not coming out from the game but from my apartment. I lost count how many times I ran away even that I didn't see anyone but just heard a creepy sound coming out of bushes or window.

    My verdict.
Great again to see Resident Evil game as a survival horror. Now when I judge survival horror games I compare them with this gem, absolutely incredible experience that made me be on the edge of the seat the whole team. And best part is I wasn't playing it alone.

So right off the bat i just want to make it clear that i have nothing against old school feeling, challenging games like this, i appreciate their existence and how they go against the modern mainstreamed flow and dont hold your hand, with that said it doesnt mean i cant critique them, as i feel some of the more visible issues would be percieved as such even in 2002.

With this remake being my first proper encounter with old school Resident Evil games, it took some getting used to the gameplay. Especially on PC with mouse and keyboard its challening to get accustomed to the controls. As the scenes shift, your brain constantly wants to readjust the controls to fit the new layout, but the game will turn your character around all the time, making up for constant confusion, which often made me run back into enemies hands on accident. One old school relic that irritated me the most was the very small item count that you can carry around. Managing items alone, by travelling back and forth around the environment, for needed items to progress, consumed a hefty part of the overall game completion time. I get the design decision behind it, i dont want infinetly deep pockets so i can carry everything around, but 2 - 4 extra item slots would've made things much more straight forward and less painful.

The combat was rather easy to get used to despite the, for me atleast, unusual camera angle and character controls. One of the issues that popped up was when fighting crows, as they start their attacks when theyre outside of the camera's frame, so it can be hard to anticipate them and they can take your health away quickly. Same happens with other enemy types aswell as they can jump you in close quarters as the scenes shift. One more confusion was caused by aiming upwards/downawrds on enemies either to shoot them in the head or while theyre down, as it felt like a lottery if i'll finish them or not since its difficult to judge your position relative to reaching enemies weak spots, risking getting grabbed. Gunplay was suprisingly alright for what it was, as the guns had satisfying sound effects and aswell as that mechanical kick behind them.

I had played newer Resident Evil games before this, so the key plot points already were spoiled for me, but getting the full story was still worth it and managed to suprise me at times. So if youre same as me, dont worry, you'll still enjoy the story despite only having played later titles. The narrative advancement pretty much relies on you solving puzzles and the game does no favours in helping you solving them. You need to heavily explore every nuck and cranny, to use your common sense to make out what goes where and pay close attention to your surrooundings to spot deadly traps which you may trigger.

Visually the remaster looks pretty nice, i quite liked the art style aswell as the game's atmosphere which it enhances. The mansion especially is full of detail. Technically speaking its easy to notice the remaster's GameCube roots, the texture work isnt super crisp on some of the environment objects, but still solid enough. However a few of the scene backgrounds can be of quite clearly and noticeably lower resolution, or a result of poor compression, and stick out like a sore thumb. There werent any real issues performance wise either, apart from the odd stutter and small delay between scene changing.

While i wasnt blown away by the game like so many gamers were back in 90's and again in 2002 upon remaster°s original release, i still acknowledge that the game is a classic. I cant honestly call it a masterpiece just to fall in line, but what i will say is that its a very good game still and one that is worth your time even in the year 2020 if youre looking for both old school gaming and Resident Evil experience.

Globally and objectively - this is a very good game/remaster, with an interesting plot and atmosphere.
But objectively I can't give it "green rating", I gave it "maximum yellow" 7 because of things that I didn't like in RE:
    1) Billion of doors: I was exhausted from that already in "RE Zero". And it pisses me off to meet it again. At some point, I spat and went to the Internet to look for a plugin that disables the animation of these f*ng doors.
    2) Viewing angles: I admit that this is a feature of this series of games, but as I wrote in the review for "RE Zero" - I don't like this feature. It pisses me off that, having entered the room, I can stand close to the enemy, but not see him until he attacks only because "the angle has been decided". Yes, it creates a special tension of horror, but I think this is a dubious decision, because besides adding a little horror, it is creating much more annoyance and discomfort in the game-play, when you can lose not because of the difficulty of the game, but because of idiotic angle "in the wrong place at the wrong time." Especially when you try to aim the enemy and the camera jumps from place to place.
    3) There are many interesting puzzles in the game, but many of them are logically ridiculous. For example, you need to go through half of the game to find and recreate the key to open the door, which is "held by snot" and which can be knocked out with one kick. It was worth at least a more attentive approach to the design of such puzzles, for example, to draw the same door more heavy, durable, unapproachable.
    4) If you play for a guy - the inventory is small, for a girl - a little more. Yes, there is a common chest, which is already a huge plus, but you still need to run between a billion doors to find it. The problem is different: To make the zombies don't get up again and run faster, you need to carry a jar of kerosene and a lighter(- 2 cells). And all the plot items are still in the general inventory. And you walk alone, which means, unlike the last game, you have one not very big inventory, instead two from "RE Zero".

Great and old-school. Though I'm not a fan of the fixed-camera-angles with tank-controls. Thankfully as a PC gamer as I am, it's possible to change the controls to...I believe it's called "advanced controls", which means when you press the W-button your character will move forward regardless of the camera angle. It was fun to try and scary and I will definitely play this game again and again.

A disclaimer here, my opinions are my own and though they may conflict with yours, please do know that I understand why this game is so popular and loved, and if you haven't played the game yourself, I would urge you to give it a try.

Visuals - Well its very dated xD, even the HD remake, obviously its not gonna look like the games we have today, the graphics have been made to look much more appealing but don't expect a top of the line experience in this department. However, I still think this game is gorgeous, the atmosphere as well is just so good and really captures the creepy nature of the game. I personally had no issues with the visuals and was happy just the way it was.

Camera - You do not control any camera at all in this, the backgrounds will shift as you move and though this is not a fun killer, it is most definitely irritating at times when you are walking and the camera cuts but your controls don't correct themselves so you kinda waddle in place changing the background back and forth as you do so. This is especially irritating when you need to see what is ahead of you to defend yourself. It definitely can make the game more scary, and some of the shots of the camera are really cool, but from a gameplay perspective, I was not a big fan of this one. This brings me to the combat..

Combat - I don't know about this one, its a survival horror so its mostly about preserving ammo and avoiding conflict but this isn't always possible and it can lead to some annoying situations, you don't get direct control of where you are shooting, you just need to point in the direction of the zombies and fire, but as mentioned above with the camera, this can be hard to do as you sometimes need to run back to turn yourself around and take a few shots before the enemy can get to you. This can also make the camera change which takes the enemy out of your sight so you have to shoot them off camera and hope you are hitting them, there is nothing fun about this, I am sorry. Don't even get me started on the dogs, just health munchers, they latch onto you and just chomp down on your itty bitty life. Again, I am completely aware the combat isn't the biggest focus here but it is sometimes mandatory to take out the enemies, and this was never fun for me.

Puzzles - I actually enjoyed the puzzles for the most part, I thought they were quite fun and interesting to work out, though I have a bit more about to say about that below. But I am a big fan of exploration and just finding little bits of lore to learn about, and sometimes you will need to explore to find certain items to solve puzzles or obstacles. Sometimes it isn't always very clear what you are supposed to do so you may need a guide handy.

Inventory management - I hate this so much. I have nothing against inventory management, I recently played Dead Space 2 and the game is all about that. But here it is just frustrating, going through doors has a little cutscene of the door opening which just takes time, and it slows the game down quite a bit. You get access to certain rooms with storage cupboards but they are not common enough which means a lot of backtracking. You are never always sure what you need without a guide, so it can be a lot of trial and error here.

Story - I enjoyed the story a lot, I loved learning about the mystery of the mansion and what was going on there. The voice acting is silly for sure but if you can look passed that, you can enjoy what is being told, lots of mystery and fun to be had in figuring it all out.

Difficulty - Time to confess, I played the first half of this game without a single guide, but then I got frustrated by the game. I understand you get quite a bit of saves you can do but the fact they are limited had my anxiety going through the roof the whole way through, dying could mean 30 minutes of catching back up which is infuriating, I have not been this angry when dying in a game for a very long time. Eventually I decided to use a walkthrough to carry me through the rest of the game and I honestly didn't feel bad about it. I may not be looked at too fondly for this but I want to be completely honest in how the game affected me to the point that I just had to use a guide. There are a lot of strategies that can be used to make the game easier and a lot of things I found in this guide I feel I never would've figured out on my own.

Final Review - I understand this won't be a popular review but I wanted to be completely honest. This game was not my cup of tea. I most definitely will continue the series, but I am happy to move on from this one.

The best game of Resident evil series in my opinion, and a great remaster/remake because brig every emotion of the original game. All the characters are amazing, and I love the tank control.

Definitivamente un excelente remake, desde aquí en adelante Capcom aprendió como hacer el trabajo, en un juego que mantiene la esencia del original con un apartado estético impecable, y añadidos que no pasan desapercibidos. Un remake absolutamente redondo.

19 years are 19 years, and yet Resident Evil has something to say. Not only to its fans, who were spending evenings with the game back in 1996, but also to us, who were five years old or even less at that time. [Issue#250]
