    Another roguelike that explains a tales of pirates with some technical issues but interesting gameplay mechanics.

    Renowned Explorers: International Society was a fun and challenging experience, but with few contents. The Emperor’s Challenge adds what the players want, but maybe it is not enough to start a new expedition.

    The systems are surprisingly complex, given the cartoonish presentation and focus on enjoying yourself. While mastering it isn’t easy, it’s plenty forgiving if you want it to be, and the replay value alone easily makes it worth the $19.99 price on Steam.

    It may look like a casual game but the mechanics including tactical party management as well as unlockable and combinable abilities keep you motivated. At least until routine sets in. Solid entertainment for aficionados of turn-based board games.

    Renowed Explorers offers a lot of stuff to love. The game is complex, the combat is nice and traveling is worth while as well. There are a few things we miss about this game though: a good tutorial, the possibility to change the difficulty level and locations to travel to.

    Don't let the graphics and cheerful mood fool you - Renowned Explorers is an unforgiving and demanding strategy game, with deep systems and combat. It's not necessarily a bad approach, but it seems that it needed a bit more work - particularly regarding the lack of tutorials and uneven difficulty level.

    The constant support of Abbey Games through DLC, however, could be the key to a more complete experience, at least from a content point of view.

    I'm not chomping at the bit to keep playing, but I am curious to delve deeper. Different combinations of explorers can beget different tactics both in and out of battle. That thought alone is enough to keep me from uninstalling it.

    Exploring game will entertain you with its perfect combat system, but also severely frustrates with the exaggerated role of chance. [Issue#256]

    There is a lot to appreciate about a game such as this, exploring is fun, finding loot and treasure also fun;
    the food dynamic that limits your exploration length is strategic as well as the small resolve pool that makes you think twice before encounters. I also like the RPG elements that comprise the tech trees and character growth.

    What is missing and is a major issue is a lack of any persistence between play throughs, it would be nice to say, receive bonus research and gold based on how many treasures are in your collection or have retinue slots and a stash that persist through all play throughs maybe have played characters keep half there levels; there are many easy ways to add such things to increase the desire to replay the game that wouldn't deter from the essential game balance. As it is, I was not interested in doing more than one expedition, as they are so short and you start again from scratch each time that it more or less aggravates me rather than entertains.

The fact that I can befriend those cute sheep instead of hitting them was unexpectedly fun! It has tons of exciting and fun moments, like the old abbess in the highlands, she's crazy and witty!

    The learning curve is a bit steep, but it made me feel challenged! And after a few tries and getting in the correct mood I was able to get further and I was like 'ow..duh'. After that things were still challenging but do-able.
