What is missing and is a major issue is a lack of any persistence between play throughs, it would be nice to say, receive bonus research and gold based on how many treasures are in your collection or have retinue slots and a stash that persist through all play throughs maybe have played characters keep half there levels; there are many easy ways to add such things to increase the desire to replay the game that wouldn't deter from the essential game balance. As it is, I was not interested in doing more than one expedition, as they are so short and you start again from scratch each time that it more or less aggravates me rather than entertains.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came for the artwork and stayed for the strategy. Very XCOM-like. When you realise that the party selection screen is probably the most important part in the game you will love it even more :) Expand

Renowned Explorers: International Society It is amazingly fun tactics/rogue-like game.

It is one of those games that you keep playing just one more turn until the sun rises.

I simply love this piece of art. The deep strategic and tactical gameplay demand a lot of your inner expedition leader.
Also, the art and audio tingle your senses.

    Tons of fun to play!

I eat up X-COM, Fire Emblem and other Tactical Strategy Game. Renowned Explorers happened to be totally up my alley. Tons of crunchy mechanics to sink my teeth into and really fun stories to tell and discover!

Really awesome animations, adorable art, and a lot of content to bite into.

I tried to brute-force my way through this game and lost. Then I went back and made a crew that was best at insulting enemies. I just insulted a pack of wolves. 10/10 would play again :)

Even though I am a 'casual gamer', I really really liked this game that a friend recommended. The fact that I can befriend those cute sheep instead of hitting them was unexpectedly fun! It has tons of exciting and fun moments, like the old abbess in the highlands, she's crazy and witty!

this game has really good potential and is very enjoyable.
however, it falls in the most important part a rouge like can fall. replay value. u gain very little by doing more playthroughs and there aren't enough events.
after finishing ftl once i wanted to finish it many more times (on hard). after finishing this once (took me 4 tries), though enjoyable, i didn't want to play again.

I've been on a "turn-based" game kick lately so when this presented itself I had to give it a go. Overall, the game is really good, despite the heavy use of RNG to determine outcomes while exploring-- at first this was very annoying to me (especially when you have a run of poor rolls) but I think it's just that those bad luck moments stick with you longer.

I'd have preferred to give the game a 7.5 instead of a 7, but that isn't an option. If the game introduces a difficulty slider and improves the new player experience with a better tutorial, my score would be closer to 9.

The game is too linear based and missions the same. It's not even like Heart of Africa where you did some actual exploring. Play a game or too and the redundancy will set in and you'll find you're just repeating yourself over and over.

Not to mention the fact the devs are deleting posts on the official forums on Steam trying to hide how bad the game is or overpriced it is. I'd

I'd recommend a long wait on this one as it's not as good as it might look. The other one that is out recently is a tad better but if you want a real experience exploring then find an emulator and get "Heart of Africa" by EA.

Without a doubt this is my game of the year for 2015, and probably in my all-time top 10 or 20 list. my (as of rn) 231.3 hours on my Steam record do not include the 30 or so hours i spent previewing it. i meant to only spend like 20 minutes previewing it, but it is that good. it is also true that i literally stole money to buy this game. i put it back before anyone was the wiser, butWithout a doubt this is my game of the year for 2015, and probably in my all-time top 10 or 20 list. my (as of rn) 231.3 hours on my Steam record do not include the 30 or so hours i spent previewing it. i meant to only spend like 20 minutes previewing it, but it is that good. it is also true that i literally stole money to buy this game. i put it back before anyone was the wiser, but still, this game is so awesome that it temporarily turned me evil.

It's hard to say exactly how good of a game this is; I was drawn in by the impressive, unique art-style and the diverse, motley crew of adventurers at your disposal. The game's combat system is surprisingly in-depth and well thought-out, but the very heavy RNG mechanics on the overworld may turn off some players. I am a bit disappointed by the amount of content in the game, though I suppose that statement probably speaks volumes on its own. The developers certainly created a solid game, I just wish there was more of it. (even including the paid DLC)

Overall, Renowned Explorers is a decent title to pick up for those gamers that enjoy board games with a bit of turn-based combat mixed in. If you're hesitant, I highly suggest waiting for a 50% off sale before making a purchase as the game is a bit light on things to do. It is however, a decent game to kill time on a plane or long bus ride.

The constant support of Abbey Games through DLC, however, could be the key to a more complete experience, at least from a content point of view.

Renowned Explorers: International Society was a fun and challenging experience, but with few contents. The Emperor’s Challenge adds what the players want, but maybe it is not enough to start a new expedition.
