Even though it’s short, I would definitely say it’s worth the small price tag if you enjoy relaxing games like Proteus or Journey. It doesn’t have any big emotional payoff or deep message to convey, but it’s still a game I enjoyed playing, and one I can see myself returning to after a long, stressful day.

Refunct seems to be the beginning of something great and in its current state it seems to be lacking a little individuality. Refunct does have some really solid aspects, the player movement and flow is honestly enjoyable. Multiple jumps all flow naturally into one another supported with a smooth pull up mechanic to let you reach higher ledges.

  1. But what I think Refunct most importantly demonstrates is the nascent skill of developer Dominique Grieshofer. This appears to be his first public project, and what’s displayed here is a rare talent for communicating what a player needs to do in a game without ever having to actually say it. That makes me want to keep a careful eye on whatever he does next.

Sure the game is really short and its debatable if there's any replay value, but it's only $3 USD so the price is right. Expand

The users' reviews for Refunct are overwhelmingly positive not because it is the game of the year, but because this first person platform gameThe users' reviews for Refunct are overwhelmingly positive not because it is the game of the year, but because this first person platform game offers a short but nice, relaxed experience for less than a dollar (when discounted). A chocolate bar can be more expensive than a dollar and you don't get to enjoy it for more than a few seconds; Refunct is cheaper and will keep you entertained for 20 minutes to 2 hours (depending on your interest in achievement). Conclusion: Refunct is more worth your money than chocolate bars, and healthier. Expand

Refunct is an extremely simple first-person 3D platformer. The game is extremely simple:

    • You have the ability to jump.
    • You have the ability to wall jump.
    • You can grab onto the edge of a block and pull yourself up if you are at a high enough height relative to it.
    • You can swim (an ability only used once in the game, and then, only very briefly).
    • You can dive underwater (an ability which is, as far as I can tell, 100% useless – the game never makes any use of it at all).
    • You have the ability to slide along the ground or duck.
    • You can combine jumping and ducking.
    • There are a bunch of square blocks of various heights and widths that rise up out of the water.
    • There are grassy areas on top of them that turn from gray to green when you step on them.
    • There are red buttons that, when you step on them, cause more blocks to rise up out of the water.
    • There are a few collectible cubes which simply float around in moderately difficult to reach spaces.
    • There are pipes you can slide through.
    • There are yellow jump pads that launch you up quickly.
    • There are rectangular yellow squares that serve as elevators you can launch yourself from at the top of their arc if you time it right.

That’s it. That’s the entire game.

That may sound like a lot, but in the end, it is an extremely minimalistic set of elements. There is no real environmental variation, and there is little in the way of variety of puzzles. The only hazard is falling down into the water below… which is harmless, but does mean you’ll have to climb back up the blocks.

Ultimately, there’s not a whole lot to this game, and it is extremely short – I 100%ed the whole thing without a guide in 20 minutes. Amusingly, the game has steam cards, so if you want to get all those cards, you’ll need to idle in the game for about three times the amount of time it took to beat it.

This game simply lacks any real substance. There’s no dressing or anything. It is just what it is, and what it is is extremely simple. It isn’t memorable and I don’t see any real reason to spend your time on it, brief as it may be – and it certainly isn’t worth spending your money on it.
