For a game selling itself as a continuation of '90s space flight sims, they sure did **** all research into good control schemes.

The gameplay itself is what you expect of the genre, if a bit shallow. For example you can't actually dock, you can only approach stations and press 'E'. Missions consist of flying to a purple or yellow icon by pressing 'E', and then either pressing 'E' again, or clicking on enemies until they die. Sometimes you press 'E' again to loot. There is a reason it only costs $30. Your money is probably better spent on other games, unless you really want to play it for some reason. No Man's Sky is on sale for $30 right now and if you don't have it yet you'll get way more out of it.

if it wasn't for the horrendous controls I would give it a 6 or 7. I wanted to like this game, I really did, but it is so damn half baked, with incorrect keybind prompts popping up, no "up one menu" key, really strange mouse controls in certain menus, and so on. Be highly dubious of anyone giving it a 10. I could see someone who played it with a controller with no expectations of a flight sim giving it an 8 at the most, which is what the professional critics seem to have averaged on.

Definitively worse than the first. Telling people that this game reminds them of Privateer is an insult to this master-piece.

    + the music
    + ship design
    + nice intro

    - the hud and the user interface are horrible
    - the fov made me puke
    - the grind

    - the protagonist is dull
    - the story is meh

    Avoid at all cost !

Graphics. -- I know this style and it can be ok, but I was shocked to discover that the game uses 2D sprites in many instances, like games from 1992. Just look carefully when you blow up something and look at the particles, they aren't 3D. Also the jumpgate animation is just so bad, I have to skip it every time, and that's also one of the loud sound fxs that I can't turn down low enough. The cockpit is kinda cool in the ships, but come on..it's 2019 where are the 3D cockpits or let me turn off some of the instruments or give me a better perspective. I know Wing Commander games play a big influence, but we don't have to copy the bad aspects or somehow make the graphics/computer limitations of that era =a feature.
Also, the game could be a lot better if it sort the the systems a bit better. "Extreme danger" sometimes is nothing, and "low crime" area and I'm blasted into pieces by a pirate with a giant ship.
Ship choices are also kinda disappointing. The top of the top ship isn't as useful- due to control issues- as a heavy transport with thick armor. The agility doesn't help here, since it seems like everyone - including me- struggling to control the ships in the game, you aren't getting a better turn-ratio or more precise hit-run style attack, than a fat transport ship, which can take the beating for a lot longer. Also missing lateral controls. I'm supposed to mine asteroids but I have to thrust away and back to find the spot to hit with the laser, because my ship can't move sideways? You gotta be joking me, even the moon lander in 1960s had lateral thrust, and this game plays well into the future, although a "weird future", ships cannot move sideways. It can also be though, because the game unfinished? J
The game is also hints being unfinished in many other aspects. You can't miss it it's apparent on the menus, graphics, options, bugs and glitches.
    Final word:
This is a half baked game really, get it if you want a couple of hours of fun go ahead, but be aware of the limitations and shortcomings. I gave up after I bought the most expensive ship and be disappointed it was worse than the 2nd cheapest one.

    * Lame story. Really? The developers never saw 'John Wick'? The protagonist actually leaves the big baddie alive and the story is about tracking him down again? Awful.

    * No real depth to the game at all. There is just nothing here and eventually it all just boils down to 'go shoot some guys'.

    * No personal storage outside your ship. It makes doing 50% of the missions an absolute nightmare as there is not real way to gather and save materials needed to complete the missions.

    * Lots of minor bugs and glitches. Nothing game breaking, but pretty dang annoying. Like coming out of warp at full speed right in front of a structure. Bang! Enjoy your repair bill. Or just about to dock at a structure and whoops. Police Scan. Bang into the structure. Enjoy your repair bill.

I am sure there are lots of folks that like this sort of game, however I am not one of them. Do wait for a while and get it on sale for $10 or so. It is really not worth much more than that, in my opinion.

The main character, a Female, is very boring and one dimensional. The combat is fast paced and good if you want a mind numbing experience that doesn't require a lot of skill. You can ramp up the difficulty by turning off auto follow mode, which basically points your ship at the target to make it super easy to shoot the enemy ship.

Trading is very basic and at times frustrating. You can be good or bad depending on which missions you take and this will effect which stations you are allowed to land in. There are a lot of variations in enemy ships, but you only get to fly 5, but there are some hidden ships around, but the main 5 are ok but not great. For $30 its a decent game, but does get repetitive after 10 hours and doesn't expand this style of game in any direction. It's a clone of Freelancer(2003) and Privateer (1993), both of which had far better story lines and more atmosphere.

If you want a game that doesn't require much brain power of skill its good for the price, but no way is this game a 10, at most a 7 is being generous.

Every time i try to do a mission that has a higher than average risk it will range from doable to relentless pounding. The main mission after just 4 steps becomes impossible unless you go back, completely break the immersion and grind till you get almost the best gear in game.
The game makes you feel like Rambo at some points and quickly turns you into Rocky but you dont really survive the fights... You just keep getting beeten into a pulp.

The key bindings are also bad, since you cant really assign all the commands to different keys.

The UI could be better also, the targeting system even with the best module is hectic. You will lock on the closest target which can be just cargo while you are fighting...

PC M+K optimization is far from perfect and is not as enjoyable as when using a controller.

The story... is there one? i didnt play Rebel Galaxy but this didnt say anywhere that it was a sequel and i dont have a clue what the main story is.

There are very few ship choices and very few weapons. You dont even get to loot those weapons so the grind revolves around money/bounties and commodities.

So I created a post on the discussion forum and it grew to be the largest post there, with multiple people wondering why they were treating the original fans this way. In return, they used the minimum possible excuse to ban me without warning for 30 days. All for calling a known Epic troll a shill. I won't be buying anything from this company in the future. They rode the fan's backs to get cash from Epic and sold us out.

The story is quite good actually I found it more enjoyable then the first, the graphics are very well and the game is extremely well optimized! On my 1060 with a Ryzen 5 2600 I get a solid 60FPS on the highest settings at 1080p.
The game however is not without faults some of those can be a tad annoying such as engaging in combat with lower ranged weaponry and the NPC's talking to you which will prevent you from viewing the enemy ship range meaning you either fire and waste power or wait for the chat to end and see the distance, another issue is the save system and as much as I enjoy it actually saving more often this does bring up issues where it can save mid mission and if that mission is too difficult you may be stuck in a combat loop forcing you to restart the entire game since the game does not allow you to re load the save from a certain point such as when you docked at the station. I have also encountered a strange bug where on occasion when approaching a station without enemies I immediately lose shields and take massive module damage for no apparent reason and this is quite annoying as heavily damaged modules are not cheap to repair.

Now onto music, the music in RGO is quite impressive it has a massive array songs ready to play and several stations of differing genres to choose from, it even includes a neat little streamer mode so it only plays songs that you can use in your videos without issues! You can even add your own custom music which can be set as the combat music, station music, or idle music and even create a custom mix tape that shows up in the radio menu.

If you are looking for a space arcade type game (not to be confused with space sims such as Elite Dangerous) then this game is worth the $30, its quick to pick up and has plenty of action!

It's not the greatest arcade-style or simulation dogfighter out there, true. No, it's not a successor to Freelancer or Privateer, but it pays homage.

I also play(ed) Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen Alpha (maybe my grandkids will enjoy the full release one day), X3 & 4, Everspace, Star Point Gemini 2 & 3EA, Rebel Galaxy 2, etc. and comparatively this game still brought me hours of entertainment which was well worth the price tag I paid of $12.

Each of those games has its own appeal. If you were looking for a "realistic" universe and HOTAS-capable flight SIM, go play Elite. If you were looking for a space-sim for your HOTAS setup, then quite frankly you were an idiot and maybe you should've watched the numerous gameplay vids before buying this.

This game does what it set out to do and relatively well, considering it comes from a two-person studio.

The controls do take getting used to but once you have the hang of it, there are really only minor complaints left (I play KB and not with a gamepad). The focus/follow mechanic is actually a good experiment and a mechanic that works for an arcade-style space shooter.

The art style is the way it is for a reason and I, for one, really appreciate the homage to Wing Commander: Privateer, like the HUD and radar, cockpit styles. It's not "stolen" or "cloned" for the lack of originality. I think it is honouring the original in a creative way. For me, it brought back nostalgic memories of playing Privateer as a kid with a two-button joystick on a 14" CRT monitor and being in absolute awe, and I really believe this was the developer's intention. (I should note that I never once thought this game WAS a successor to Privateer either).

The country-style-outer-space vibe is awesome. Yes, the story is "meh" but to be honest, not many modern games have such a super awesome story anymore either. The story is "ok" all things considering but yes, it feels like a filler to get you from point A to B.

Some reviewer tried to liken RGO to Wing Commander III's combat. Again, you are comparing apples and jelly-f-ng-beans. Each set out to achieve a completely different objective and you should keep that in mind.

I had my share of frustrations, like other users, with incomprehensible difficulty spikes in missions, but "ce'st la ve". It might take a retry or two but eventually, you figure out a way to scrag the bad-guys anyway.

I give the game a 10 in an attempt to rebalance the aggregate score. It doesn't deserve a 10, no, a 7 maybe, but I felt that a lot of reasons people gave the game a low score (0-3) was merely because they totally misunderstood the concept and did not research the product properly before buying. They didn't get what they were expecting because they didn't know *what* to expect in the first place and consequently they gave the game an undeservedly low score without being objective.

Expect an arcade game, not a simulation.
Don't expect more than 20 hours of fun game-play, unless you do enjoy some repetitiveness (some people do).
Expect retro graphics (just watch a f-ng youtube video before buying, please).
    Don't expect Privateer or Freelancer.
Don't expect it would be a good fit for your dual-stick and throttle Thrustmaster or Vipril HOTAs setup.
Don't give the game a 0 score in a review because you didn't do your own homework.

I am really enjoying this game. It seems to put the focus on fun, rather than super-realism. I like fun. I like blowing things up. There's lots of explosions. The voice acting is pretty decent too. The one liners when fighting people are pretty great!
One of my favorite games growing up was Wing Commander: Privateer. If you played that and enjoyed it at all, you owe it to yourself

If you want a super realistic space sim, with a super dynamic economy, rendering the entire mikly way.... this isn't it.
If you want to have fun blowing stuff up in space while rocking out to a great soundtrack, this is definitely it.

    This is great fun.
Very much influenced by old school privateer and freelancer (although more the former to my mind). This is arcadey space fun with a number of assists you can turn on/off depending on what your looking for. Elite Dangerous this is not.
Music is awesome and if you don’t like it (I hate country but this country rock is perfect for the game) then you can play your own

This is a controller game, it’s advertised as such and is the recommended control option. However it does support kb/m and HOTAS and control issues with those and minor bugs being squashed all the time by the devs
The settings menus have a sort of faded scratched out look for the text that can be hard on the eyes and there is no option to change the look if your visually impaired.
There is no tutorial and you can be quickly out of your depth if you get into a fight while acclimatising to the controls and have auto tracking turned off but there are on screen prompts and customisable controls so it doesn’t take too long to get everything covered.

Among the many insights offered in Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, it knows that if there’s one thing better than cruising around in a sweet ride blowing stuff up and flying through their explosions, it’s cruising around in a sweet ride blowing stuff up and flying through their explosions while listening to sweet tunes.

Outlaw is a throwback to the roots of spacesim genre, a visual aid that shows where it all began and helps to understand just how far the genre has evolved since then. And the lesson to take is this: let the past stay in the past. [Issue#241, p.40]

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a fun and addicting space combat game with an amazing soundtrack. However, controls can be really weird without a game controller and playing it for the first time is very daunting unless one watches a 40 minutes long introductory/tutorial video.
