  • Summary: Out of cash, out of luck, out on the fringe. Juno Markev has a killer to tail, a debt to pay, and more trouble headed her way. Rebel Galaxy Outlaw takes place in a greasy, blue-collar world of outlaws, truckers, cops and thieves.

While getting up to speed with Rebel Galaxy Outlaw takes more trial and error than it should, the experience ultimately becomes an addicting mix of combat and micromanagement that I never thought would hook me the way it did. In a time where I am seemingly taking on any odd job I can in real life, I never expected bounty hunters/delivery person/space pirates to be some of them. I might never get the chance to live out my dreams of flying into space anytime soon but I’m happy to know Rebel Galaxy Outlaw has my back for the time being.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a very successful throwback to the days of dogfighting games like Star Wars: X-Wing and Wing Commander: Privateer. It smartly updates the gameplay with optional assists that make it a snap to jump in and get right to the most satisfying parts of the action. This open area of space we’re free to defend or exploit is full of side activities (including a crazy ship-painting tool), and those blunt the inherent repetition of fighter-vs-fighter combat scenarios. And the story – while definitely padded out more than it needs to be – is suitably small-scale and personal for a mercenary/smuggler type like Juno Markev.

Ultimately, this makeshift Han Solo simulator isn’t as fun as it initially felt like. Graphics are superb, the music is just to die for and Juno is the kind of rough and raw heroine the gaming world really needs more – overall, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is a game I would like to love more. In the long run, though, the effort needed to pull off the revenge feels more tedious than it should.

Has beautiful explosions. Unique and chill PS4 game. Sure, like most games, it can get repetitive...but is fine as long as you don't burn yourself out with 3 hour or more gaming sessions. I play for about an hour an evening and love it. Just cruising around mining, advancing the main missions, killing a pirate or two. Upgrading my ship. It's great. I think people mistake the beautiful design and look for a AAA game and forget that this is made by a very small team (~5 people). You are just not going to have the variety of gameplay as the bigger titles. For me...I love the simplicity and beauty of this game. It is real easy to role-play my firefly fantasies. Expand

The interior cockpit view is horribly claustrophobic and so I am forced to play in 3rd person perspective. Game structure is similar to the first game, repetitive missions that get boring quite quickly. It’s just not much fun if I’m honest. Expand

It’s a dogfighting game where you endlessly skip docking, autopilot, and Jump scenes. I can’t begin to describe how annoying that is - all gameplay videos fail to capture this. Music is as forgettable and repetitive as the first one, but with a larger soundtrack. Graphics are what’s expected from an Indy game - not horrible though. Ship selection is abysmal and missions get repetitive as well, very quickly. Story is...so boring and doesn’t grab you at all. The first game is miles better, and on PS Now. Do yourself a favor and play that instead. Don’t invest in this one, or wait for a $5 sell. Expand
