It won’t be the next Forza or the next great sim, but it doesn’t need to be at the end of the day. It’s a charming little arcade racer that, even for all its quirks it takes you on a journey. Back to the days of eating too much pizza in the arcade at a birthday party. Going wild cause mom let you have all the quarters in the ashtray of her 1998 Ford Explorer and running to the cabinets to play whatever arcade games are there. In a world of sim racing rigs, VR headsets, and top-dollar racing equipment, it’s nice to have something that gets racing and rally back to its basics. So go order some greasy pizza and maybe an ice cream, and rip around the course to be the new World Rally Champ.

Rally Arcade Classics lays its wheels on solid dirt, but the ride isn’t without bumps. The groundwork for a fun and satisfying experience is all there, yet the game struggles to build momentum. Its structure feels sluggish to kick off and somewhat weak in sustaining player engagement over time. Fans of more simulation-heavy rally titles will find plenty to enjoy here: the driving model is sharp and responsive, and there’s a respectable amount of content on offer, bolstered by online leaderboards that add a layer of long-term appeal. However, those approaching it with expectations of a fast-paced, pick-up-and-play arcade racer may find themselves let down. Much of said content demands time and dedication to access, which may not sit well with more action-oriented players.

Rally Arcade Classics certainly deserves a lot more attention than it's been getting in its first few weeks, and we hope this isn't indicative of the current market's lack of interest in speed arcades. It's not trying to reinvent the arcade formula but rather pay homage to it, nor will it completely fill the gap left by the demise of arcades, but it's a passion project that can compete with the current competition in the indie space unless you consider the existence of a multiplayer mode to be absolutely essential.

If you grew up in the PS1 era, this game will feel like coming home. The grind, the repetition, the slightly janky presentation, they’re all part of the package, for better or worse. And while those elements may frustrate newcomers, for me it only amplified the nostalgia. It really does feel like a lost classic dusted off and somehow still works. At its asking price, you’ll want to consider how much patience you have for repetition and how much value you place on nostalgia. But for players like me, who remember sneaking in rally sessions on my dad’s PlayStation, Rally Arcade Classics is more an addicting warm feeling.

Rally Arcade Classics succeeds in one important area: it brings back the approachable feel of classic arcade rally games. It’s fun in short bursts, and fans of rally racers will find plenty to enjoy in its car roster and gameplay. At the same time, the grind-heavy structure, lack of polish, and absence of true online racing hold it back from being a must-play. In the end, the value will depend on what you’re looking for. If you want a simple, content-rich throwback you can chip away at for hours, it’s worth a look. If you’re after a polished arcade racer with modern production values and multiplayer, you may want to wait for a sale, or stick with the classics it’s inspired by.
