outside alot of texture poppins I've had no technical difficultys, not that I think hardware should factor into a game review like so many others apparently do.

The characters were pretty good as well, each was unique and facial animations were awesome. Beyond that you have a linear storyline, limited gameplay styles, a SHORT campaign (10 hours with some sidequesting), needless to say there is nothing special about this game. Expand

What can i say. buggy, slow, poor performance, no graphics options worthwhile. This is a disgrace to the game which seems to be quite good on the console.

How can a developer release a game as buggy as this. Definately not worth the scratch until the bugs are fixed and even then i want to be able to increase the graphics settings!

Dear PC devs. Please learn from Blizzard that people like games that work properly when we buy them. Sick of paying for games that don't work on launch. INEXCUSABLE! If it doesn't work properly DON'T RELEASE IT until it does.

I am so surprised by how unready RAGE is. I am a ATi video-card owner and this game keeps reloading textures as i look around with the mouse. Also you can't enable vsync so you have to be prepared to watch screen tearing everytime a cut scene occurs. I'm going to stop playing and wait for a patch. (p.s running Win7-64bit, i7 920 stock, 6 gigs ram and Asus V2 5870 & yes all drivers up to date).

Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn't revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter.

I'm pretty sure GAMESPOT will be about on par...

All you DNF haters need to be crying about RAGE being linear and /insert whine here. Oooooh give us weapon lockers loaded with all guns and ammo so we don't have to actually THINK about what we should use on the current level we are playing.

I am unable to comment on the story or game play. I could not get that far as all I can say is that this game has a very strong bias against running on an ATI HD5700 with the "Wrong Drivers" or with the special "Rage Drivers"

The game is unplayable, keep checking your preferred gaming media site, and until the reviews say otherwise, don't spend that $60 burning a hole in your pocket.

Ok this game is no where near as bad as most people here suggest!....

The game is quite linear with the missions/quests all linking together which often necessitates they be completed in the correct order before a new one can be embarked upon... though this isnt a strict rule and some can be overlapped... most missions are pretty straight forward and on arrival at the mission destination often include another sub-mission which is initiated & required in order to complete the first!..this can be a bit irritating after a few missions..but not overly so..
The graphics on my system nvidia gtx 285, i7 @ 4.2 ghz are smooth and often look amazing with great attention being given to the set pieces in each location..some are a true work of art...Sadly this is slightly spoilt on the pc version with pretty dismal and often very low res textures complete with pop up laggy texture drawing when quickly viewing another area of the environment then another....the lack of V-sync was solved in my case using Nvidia inspector and forcing it on..
The game is a sort of cross between Fallout 3 and Borderlands.....but its neither....and in some ways fails at both levels in some areas and also succeeds for what it is........its a shooter at heart trying to employ rpg elements/missions etc to maintain interest and longevity...but its a strange union that makes you wish sometimes it was just a pure free form rpg like Fallout 3..especially since the graphics can at times look amazing....but sadly this is no Fallout 3 beater...and the world is often devoid of life nad activity..until you hit the next scripted event around the corner!

But I like the game, its easy playing..it has character...the driving elements and races are in some ways similar to a dumbed down motorstorm on the ps3...but later on with added guns and shields and drop-able bombs etc to spice it up!
Gameplay when gun fighting is quite satisfying also..with enemies AI offering enough of a challenge for most players on the harder levels....and weapons offering the usual upgrade paths and so so variety...
The main issues with the PC version of the game in my opinion are the low res consolized textures!...yes the scenery is amazing at times and the set pieces and structures are amongst the best i have ever seen on any game, it just seems so sad and weird that the graphic options in the menu are non-existent....come on..i know this is a console port but wtf....there are literally NO options apart from a basic resolution and AA... and the resultant graphical issues limitations are very obvious...am sure tehy could of been fixed before releasing the pc port!... As they stand at the moment they do not seriously distract from the games enjoyment but they certainly dont add to it either!...and there is NO excuse for such LOW RES TEXTURES!

This game with some polishing and a high res texture pack could look awesome!....as it stands it just looks great....its certainly better than the stupid cell shaded Borderlands crappy graphics that some seem to wet their knickers over!..

but its ok..its def worth playing .....am giving it a 7..maybe thats a bit generous.....but its certainly worth far more than the 0's and 1' some here are giving it!....does it live up to the hype and previews....well maybe not..but what game today does!...most are simplified dumbed down console games to pc ports with shallow game play, low res textures etc...it seems developing games for consoles is killing any real game play and holding back on any depth of game play and a lack of graphical need or willpower to develop real TRUE next gen games..so this game sadly falls into that same simplified box as all the other simplified cash for console ports! games like the latest call of juarez the cartel...or even Deus Ex - Human Revolution.they all share the same problem CONSOLES!.......it shows in the lack of vision and lack of REAL development commitment towards a deep satisfying game.....and the new console area also shows a lack of any real interest to programme for PC's anymore (programming old code for old consoles does not require as much effort as pushing the envelope for newer DX11 technologies and the immensely superior capabilities of modern PC's)......sadly with pc piracy at an all all time high and most console games a sure fire win win situation financially for commercial games investors/developers..its hard to see a way forward for future pc games....this is a huge slap in the face for PC owners when you consider this game was released prob with knowing graphical bugs/glitches.(unless all the pc beta testers were BLIND!)....this pretty well sums up all the attitude of the shallow console games developers and their shallow slap in the face couldnt give a real **** to pc owners and their crappy port-overs today....

At first, I couldn't even run the game which I pre-ordered from Steam (never again!). But ATI has released a specific set of drivers for these Rage issues and ... they WORK ! I no longer seem to have any noticeable graphical issues - the pop-ins, shearing, etc., are gone. Here is a link to the ATI Rage page at AMD:

    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx

For those of you who are not running Windows 7 with an ATI card, maybe check to see if nVidia has a fix out for this.

I agree 100% with all those saying this game should not have been released with all these issues - it makes Bethesda and Id look bad and makes me lose confidence and trust. I know now after this that I will NEVER pre-order a PC game again. I will wait until the game is released so I can gauge what the issues are. When it comes to PC games, or maybe even consoles games, patience is indeed a virtue. Don't give in to the pre-order hype andbait ... and don't trust the offical"Critics". Look at the difference here at Metacritic between the Critics score and the User score - Wow! Now about the game itself .... for those of you expecting a Fallout experience, this ths game is NOT Fallout - it doesn't have the great atmosphere and feeling fallout 3 and New Vegas have. It's also quite linear - you can't really explore as much as you can in Fallout. You have to stick to the set pathways. Want to get off the path and climb up that rock face a bit - forget it! But still there are things I like about it. The scenery is interesting and the graphics are clear and detailed, but not revolutionary, once the issues are mostly gone. Graphics are just a bit above those of Fallout. And unlike Fallout, you get to drive a vehicle. The AI Mobs are interesting and pretty tough. The game is always feeding you quests, big and small. This game is like a mix between Fallout, borderlands and Doom, and it can be intense at times. The game has a little circular minimap like the GTA minimap. I wish there was a way to get a larger, more detailed map, like in Fallout. When you have to go somewhere, they trace a path for you on the minimap like in GTA so you know where to go..

To be honest, if I'd have known beforehand what this game was really like, I sure as heck wouldn't have pre-ordered it and would have waited until the price dropped to about $29 or something like that. I pray to God that Behtesda does not drop the ball with Skyrim. I had a lot of issues with Old World Blues DLC that never seemed to get fixed and now the Rage issues - what's wrong Bethesda, are you maybe too overworked and don't have time for testing??? At least I've learned a lesson - I will not pre-order Skyrim - I WILL wait to see the reviews. If the game is too buggy on PC, I'll get it on PS3 instead. I WILL learn to be patient and not be so impulsive in future - saving me money and frustration. Thought I had learned that lesson after my experiences with Civ 5 lol - Gee but I'm so tired of companies releasing betas and treating us customers like guinea pigs - wish they all had the same attitutde Blizzard has - you release a game when it really IS ready. Don't companies test their bloody games anymore? Don't they care about quality control or how we consumers perceive their companies and products? Guess not.

Anyhow, after considering the games graphical issues, and then the fix from ATI, and then after considering how the game makes me feel and its potential, I give it a 5 ... which I am willing to increase or lower at sometime in the future.

As any other ID game this is once again a letdown and feels more a tech-demo than a game. But even then the tech is bad and it has texture-pop-in problems and whatnot, just awful. I should really learn to stop buying based on nostalgia.

Terrible texture resolutions (not counting the pop-in) and lots of invisible walls or low edges or curbs, couches, or railings which will keep you from freely exploring the world. I do not find the game world fun or explorable due to this, and the sound seems completely dull and uninspired. It does not seem to use my Realtek 5.1 surround. Poor or nonexistent shadowing. It's a very poor attempt at a Borderlands-type game. Nothing during the game play has made me say 'Wow' and I do not feel there's anything new or exciting offered. This is a budget console title at best, and frankly anyone who's not played Borderlands should make that purchase instead. Also, some keyboard mappings cannot be altered, which is a terrible sin in my book. Expand

I have just played Rage for 2 hours and so far I'm pleased with the game. Sure, its gameplay is not revolutionary and the graphics pop in if you turn left/right quickly, but it's fun to play (and mostly to watch) nonetheless. Tip for those having fps and tearing issues: change you video card setup to "let the 3D application decide" for most of the settings; don't force v-sync on or off. If this doesn't work then you might need a new rig even if your current one meets or slightly exceeds the recommended system requirements. I'm saying this because this is a nextgen engine, which historically requires a beefed-up pc. Remember, when iD released Doom 3 there were no graphic cards capable of running it maxed out yet (it required a video card with 512MB of video memory, which was unheard of at that time). RAGE is just horrible. Maybe 5 years ago it would have ebeen something now its just a clone of Fallout3/Borderlands minus all the good parts but saddled with a broken concept of texture streaming via megatextures regardless of how good your PC is.

ID sold out when they were bought by Zenimax now they have forever tarnished their previously excellent reputation so PC gamers will be very cautious about future releases.

    All in all:
    - A little delay after release, however not that much that i would call it a fail. After reading through this new tech, it woul dbe amazing seeing future games using this, when it the opengl-implementation in drivers is finaly as solid as directX. Furthermore: a linux-client (which would be possible cause of the opengl), a SDK, a 64bit executable, and the original 150GB texture-pack (maybe shippable on blu-rays, or large download), would be awesome and giving this the glance it needs.
So, when looking at the Addition: Yeah, i was in rage about rage (funny :D) at first... But: im writing a review for this game, not for the driver-problems in the first 24-hours after release. So i CAN understand people who are very upset, but imagine they got it working 100% for everyone in the next 2 days, i bet people dont realy give this product the chance then, and maybe edit the absolutely stupid reviews here, which are simply based on their emotions, and do not realy reflect the game itself.

Don't know who is to blame, id or AMD. How can you have developed a game and not tested it with current drivers to see that it does not run properly. It appears the issues are worse for people with AMD cards. For example, crashing as soon as the game launches. Having to download a "Rage" driver to fix that, the game then freezes every 5 seconds. Making it unplayable.

I have no issues with screen tearing unless I alt tab or shift focus off the monitor which is running the game full screen. Frame rates are near flawless. On the negative side, the textures are not high resolution, and as far as the texture pop in, it certainly is noticeable. Here's the issue I take up with all the haters here. It's laughable to have people complain about lack of story and how that is somehow a major flaw in comparison to other id titles. Doom obviously had a fantastic story with multiple plot lines waiting for resolution until the final moments...oh wait...they stuck you in a level with a bunch of baddies and guns and you had to find a way through till the glorious bloody end. id's forte is level design and software design. Rage is a great example of both. Having played both Space Marine and Deus Ex in the previous weeks, I can say with firm confidence that Rage far outshines them in pure FPS fun. It's the first game where I actually find myself shooting certain enemies in the leg/arm to momentarily open them up for a headshot. The level design is top notch. Both you and your enemies have numerous opportunities for cover and tactical choices. They use grenades effectively in a majority of cases. If they feel they have the advantage, they will press forward to a more aggressive position. When you start taking out members of a squad, they adjust to a more defensive position. Here's where I break from the pack. Rage does something that very few games have done in the past year or so. Dating back to Mass Effect and other Bioware titles (pre-3D), so many games have attempted to provide gamers with the illusion of choice, thereby mimicking free will. Rage does not rely choice at all excluding weapons, ammunition, and crafting. And to be honest, I'm thankful for it. I was getting tired of having to shoulder the weight of all the potential ramifications of my actions a la Deus Ex, Dragon Age, Mass Effect. Aaaand here's where I rejoin the pack. Rage would be great as a tech presentation for level design and FPS physics mechanics. The driving is pointless. The cities are pointless. Running around and gathering quests is pointless. They could remove all of the fluff and have a stellar game where you simply hop from one level to the next. All the additions are actually detracting from the core values of the game, and simply leading to a timesink in between fantastic shoot-em-up gameplay. Lower the price by $20, scrap the extraneous bologna and focus on the strengths. Expand

I'm not someone who is overly focused on graphics, but as soon as I saw the opening scene of the game within the arc, I knew that this game had been cannibalized for consoles. Textures were noticeably poor up close on virtually every surface that I looked at, and not just a little washed out / flat, but reminiscent of games like half life 1. In my opinion, every indoor/ close quarter environment is an order of magnitude worse than Doom 3 in terms of quality. While I have no doubt the engine can do much more, the fact that they cut it down so much just to make it look decent on the garbage console hardware is upsetting.

Now, this would be OK from an indie developer, or even a low budget game, but as the newest flagship title from a company that has consistently produced many of the best looking graphics engines over the last decade and one which has been hyped as having incredible graphics, it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. The marketing was deceptive and the virtually nothing that I have seen so far comes remotely close to spin put out beforehand. As ID has apparently switched their focus from quality and is going the way of Bioware, I have to say that they will not get money from me again until the player reviews are in.

What a major fail! The once great John Carmack is now reduced to a second rate shovel-ware developer. It seems more on par with a Wii game then a AAA PC title.

What a broken mess of a game! It seems even the once great John Carmack has succumbed to console-port-itis. I had high hopes for this game. Maybe after several large patches, it will be some-what playable.

Both Bethsoft and Steams Rage game forums are filled with nothing but threads with players who are having massive issues with this game. Customers should be able to get refunds for this piece of **** or at least their money back for being promised a game that WORKED PROPERLY! Once a PC developer, now a memory. Thanks for treating PC gamers as third class customers. I made an account just to review this P.O.S.

Horrible bugs and issues. Since when do ATI/NVidia need to heavily adjust their drivers so that a game runs smoothly? Horrible lack of optimization, video settings are laughable, bad gamepad layout, texture-pop-ins everywhere, critically bad texture quality overall.

    The Bad

25Gb install size and all I get are blurry textures. Spin around too fast and the LOD is a split second behind. You will actually see ultra blurry textures. It's only for a split second but it is detracting from the realism of the game.

    The Ugly

Don't be fooled by the "auto detect your hardware to maintain 60fps." That's just market speak for "Console Port." The menus are clunky, mouse is erratic when turning down sensitivity to low (essential for the 5600 DPI gamers out there), and no graphic settings. On a 570 the textures are on par with Crysis on Medium. I know it's 60 fps but who wants to play that when I could boot up Time crysis. Now there is an epic scale to the game, the vistas are downright gorgeous from afar, but it only gives the illusion of scale. The fact is, the game is linear through and through. And when it isn't, it's because it's sending you to backtrack for fetch quests.

This game is prolly awesome for the ageing consoles. But the PS2-like textures on a high end graphics card is a deal breaker. If they the gamers are allowed to see those high res textures, this game could have been better, but as is, it just appears to be a waste of 25 gigs.

Gameplay. From playing for a few hours, the AI mobs are great; combat rolls, wall bounding, general dodging to avoid my aiming. The quest line at the beginning was confusing; some guy rescues you and asks you to rescue the town? Why did you put your neck out in the first place? Perhaps that will be revealed later. No world or region map; just a small minimap in the upper corner. Voice acting is pretty good. Quests have been the typical go here, do this, come back for a reward and the advancement of the story. The game is very beautiful, just had to say that again (the only great thing going for it).
Many people are saying it is a console port; I can believe it because the menu, graphical interface options are all very limited when compared to other computer games. I would suggest all PC buyers wait until a price drop to buy the game, console buyers would probably be fine with purchasing the game as it currently is.

Save your eyes. Save your money.

When textures aren't popping in turning you into an epileptic, the game looks great. Seems like it would be a fun game. Probably a bit short, though I've barely played. Supposedly the competitive multiplayer car races have been likened to Mario Kart. I wouldn't know. My eyes are strained to the max after playing the first mission. Half hour later they still hurt. It's not just flickering, there's all sorts of weird artifacts. From seems like a page of text is blinking on screen, to like a red laser sight appearing out of nowhere, yet has nothing to do with my gun or anyone else's. Weird black blocks of all sorts of sizes, and not limited to box shape popping in or out.

It's supposed to be low capped for it's frames at 60 and work around that. Well my i7 920, 6gb 1600mhz ddr3, and ATI 5850 gets about 25-35 while running around, and when still it goes back up to about 60. This is without the eye candy on (what little you can mess around with).

Even has a problem when you move around the edges load up late, even close up stuff. Also this makes me pretty lucky, since many people can't even get the game to load up, or have it crash after playing 10 minutes.

Lots of rage going on with people with uber rigs getting poor framerates as well.

It's having problems on ATI and Nvidia. I'm sure I've only described some of the problems. Will they patch it? Supposedly yes. Will it fix the problems? Who the hell knows. 60 bucks for a pc game, and not one whiff of this obvious MAJOR problem from review sites right before launch = fraud.

This turd, just like so many others this year, (here's looking to you Duke Puke'em) had glaringly obvious problems ignored by the reviewers observing fascist unamerican blackouts on reviews until after the game released. I didn't preorder months or even weeks in advance, merely 30 minutes - 3 hours before launch, and in both cases, the early 'paid' or 'special' reviews ignored all the obvious problems, if they even came out at all (i.e. pc ones delayed so you had to read the console ones first). When they showed us their gameplay video, of course none of these issues were in them.

It's just sad that no one spoke up about these turds like RAGE before they were released. This is something that should of came out weeks ago, saving lots of people money.

I waited until the last second to see some reviews or whatever to trip up. But when you don't see these things in them, you think, hey it'll be a game that works or whatever. I also hear some console players are getting some weird stuff too. But hey gotta pay off those wall street loans, and the only way the board sees it possible is to get the turd out before the other games launch, rather than actually fix the game before launch. Also probably would hurt bonuses.

Wait for a working patch. If one doesn't arrive, do not buy this game. If one does, it would be a decent game, and worthy of a 3/5 or perhaps a 7/10. That's still a decent, and fun game. But for now, my eyes still hurt, and I won't be playing this much until it gets fixed. Shame on iD. As it stands now, turn the game on, turn on some music, mix a drink, and enjoy the strobe light club experience in your own home. This broken eye straining turd gets a 3 out of 10. I would give it a 4, but physical pain knocks it down another point. If the gunplay and the graphical art design wasn't fun, it would score a lot lower.

HOWEVER, I'm giving it 5/10 for the technical garbage that the PC gaming community has had to put up with. Everyone else I know who owns this game has had crashing problems, and I myself can hardly stand the game at times, since there's a strange choppiness to the game unlike anything I've seen before. Additionally, the textures load extremely slowly, so if you turn around too fast, hell, if you turn around at all, you'll end up seeing garbage textures before the high res ones load.

The lack of optimization for the PC is very disappointing with jittery frame rates, constant weird texture pop in and a very lacking PC graphics menu I was expecting more from the guys behind Doom and Quake. For me at least this game is currently unplayable, I'm sure it'll be patched in the coming months to fix all these issues, I hope they develop a better graphics menu. A pretty, fast and aggressive shooter, striving in vain to be something more. [December 2011, p.62]

Far from perfect Rage somehow is has fun post-apocalyptic action where the principles are set –fortunately – bit different than in other games of FPS genre. [Nov 2011]

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
