I like to think of myself as a moderate reviewer, but this game has angered me so much. It's probably my own fault, I expected more. I have a fairly powerful machine, yet this game chugged something awful pre patching. Still full of graphical bugs in my experience. I guess I was also disappointed by how short the game was and how UNimmersive it was. Just get Fallout 3 or New Vegas. its doom 3 with even better graphics. and larger environments. decent voice overs. entertaining enough storyline. not worth the full retail price in my opinion. good idea but late on arrival. something that would of done a lot better if it was released at its current state 5 years earlier.

Seriously hurt by the focus on XBOX 360 development, this game lacks the graphics par it should have been. And the story, plot of the game is terrible.

But most of all it is full of bugs and they try to pass it off as been the fault of video card drivers, when they have been working with top people from AMD, yet huge amounts of issues are happening on AMD video cards still and on nVidia

The Q&A is clearly not there along with the game, it was a design experiment not fully thought out, a mess mash of "the darkness" and "rage". Terrible, and not worth any ones time.

Huge deception on this game. ~10h of gameplay so far.

The positive points : - Length. It's so bad that a few hours of playing seems ages doing always the same. - Weapons. A few weapons are great fun, but it's not like you can use them often. The negative points : - Graphics. I don't have the very latest hardware available but it's still far above any console. Seriously low resolution
Huge deception on this game. ~10h of gameplay so far.

    The positive points :
    - Length. It's so bad that a few hours of playing seems ages doing always the same.
    - Weapons. A few weapons are great fun, but it's not like you can use them often.

    The negative points :
    - Graphics. I don't have the very latest hardware available but it's still far above any console. Seriously low resolution textures everywhere when all is maxed out in options... ?
    - Lack of interesting things to do. It's all linear dungeon crawling. And you have to do each level twice, once normal and once in reverse. That's an artifact to cover the lack of content.
The Hub towns are trying to make you forget that you get all missions in a linear fashion. But it's not helping much really...
Racing cars has no interest and is dull, it's even too basic to be interesting in MP.
    - Gameplay. The same dated gameplay as in the old Doom, i.e. you fire all that you have at the opponent. No matter where you fire (head, legs...), a type of enemy has a certain amount of HP and you keep firing until you reduce these to zero, i.e. localisation of the hit will only change an animation, but not make more damage. Forget headshots. The only thing that changes how fast you kill an opponent is the type of ammo/damage that your weapon does.
    - Difficulty. Just based on how much opponent they send at you and how much you conserve ammo.
    - Art Direction / Concept Art. They really need to hire design artists that really can bring some concept art and some interesting scenario. Here it looks like a patchwork of ideas taken here and there, put together without any coherence in between.

In the end the only outstanding mission is the Dead City mission that we've all seen in the gamepkay trailers.
The rest is dull, it has no taste.
I don't even think I want to finish it...

Stopped playing after about 2 hours couldn't take the graphic problems anymore of course that was on day of launch so maybe its better by now? but I doubt it. Sloppy production, should have had a beta of the multiplayer car racing just to test even thing out and make sure it ran smooth but that would be smart and smart is not good business

Banal banal banal. A game that promised very well, had to be a cross between Doom and Fallout. Instead he found a game where our sole purpose is: accept the mission, carrying out missions, returns, accept the mission, carrying out missions, go back. Boring, repetitive and massive graphics problems. Bad game!

Rage is kind of like 2 games in 1. There is the FPS campaign bit & the online multiplayer vehicle bit. As far as the story goes I didnt even realise i was at the end of the game when the credits came. Chalk that up to a plot fail. Worse than this though was me sitting there for ages installing the game onto my xbox HD & then being told to change my discs over halfway through the campaign??? That is retarded. But worse of all was the box saying it was multiplayer & then having a SINGLE PLAYER campaign. A friend & I bought the game so we could play it together & then had a very severe case of wtf when it turned out to be **** I guess I should read the fineprint closer. The ability to upgrade cars or whatever yeah thats all well and good but the game holds no come back and play element to it I played 12 hours in total according to steam and some of that was to play the terrible multiplayer element.

From a PC aspect they have now fixed most of the issues pc players had with patches but sadly patches dont fix a bad game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was brilliant. The way it started, the way the story was told and everything else about it was simply faultless! The towns are fantastic, the graphics are unbelievable and enemy AI is pretty decent. The story of the game is quite thrilling as well. Yet it has one crucial fault that makes me rate it the way I have.

The Ending. Its horrible, beyond comprehension. I"literally went "wtf just happened here?" as the credits began to roll. They ruined a marvellous game by being lazy and pushing out the game before it was ready. When I went to the last mission, I had no idea that it was the last mission. I was expecting a huge ass boss with atleast 15 mins of incredibly fast paced lobbing of grenades and bullets and maybe my brother at it to kill it. But I was greeted with a small horde of mutants and 3 buttons. Yes thats right, the glorious boss fight at the end of the game is against 3 buttons. They werent even that tough to push to be honest. There wasnt enough of the game to justify its 20gig+ size! They have somehow setup the end to signal the coming of a sequel or DLC's, but the fact is that after such a horrible experience, I will never buy anything from this game again.

If you are a fan of endings that appeal to common sense, do not buy this crap.

My initial impression was that of a game sadly lacking in depth. But Rage's saving grace is that it is unapologetically so. The world is so small and linear it could make a pocket-calculator feel more caged and estranged than Foucault ever did. I give RAGE a score of 8/10 because none of this matters. This is a shooter devoted solely to the satisfaction of blowing scores of zombies and bad guys to tiny little pieces. Enter a world where ammunition, grenades and high-powered guns are more numerous than hydrogen atoms. Suspense your disbelief and turn off your brain. Devote your attention to the gory and gratuitously pleasing business of visually impressive destruction. The short story with its ridiculously anticlimactic and abrupt end ultimately does not matter. At this point the game has nothing new to offer anyway. Might as well start over. Finally, forget the great atmosphere and intelligence of Fallout 3. Never mind the humor and vivid insanity present in Borderlands. RAGE is wholly centered on the satisfaction of shooting zombies in the head, point blank, with shotguns. Expand

Invisible walls abound and you have no need for the jump button as you can't get anywhere with it. The enemies are uninspired as are the weapons and the driving sections are needless. Some of the side missions are replays of previous main missions with different changes (like going through backwards with differently placed enemies), and that would normally be tedious, but the graphics are so good that I want to see it again. Each area has it's own design and distinct look: from the desert to the abandoned city to the new tech city. The only thing I dislike about this game is the mutants. The motion and AI is just too good for these guys, so good I'd say it's the hardest part of the game. Get the graphics update and play with it. The characters have some unique animations and the shooting aspects of the game seem fine, but the missions themselves are uninspired.

On the plus side, a few of the characters are kinda cool, and you get to hear John Goodman talk for a few minutes (What is it with Bethesda and spending money on high dollar voice actors just to have a few lines at the start of the game and then forget about them later?).

It's unfair to give this game a 0 or a 1, but it's likewise not right to give it a 7 or higher. Wait for the price to drop before you buy this, or rent it for one of the consoles. Don't waste your money on a $60 10 hour game. I've had more fun playing a low budget indie game for $10 than I did with Rage.

With any luck a really talented game developer can take their engine and make a good game out of it, or maybe they'll make some mods for it?

I think that the gunplay is good and statisfying, that the AI fluid(Wich is enhanced by gorgeous animations), and that the racing is... fine.

The gameplay is standard FPS/RPG stuff. You take quests in hub areas, then drive to the quest, shoot enemies in the quest area, and then head back to the hub. Really, don't see this as some big RPG-thing as Fallout or Borderlands: Rage is about fun. And fun is the thing I had.
The only BIG issue I had gameplay&story wise(Besides the fact that the story is kind of lackluster), is the terrible ending. There is no boss whatsoever, you'll just be fighting enemies one second, and be watching the ending cutscene in the other.

There isn't much to say: You may like it, you may not. Long-time ID fans might be a bit dissapointed, but still, the gameplay is quite solid, and I had a blast.
I'd buy it on a sale or when it drops to 20-30 euros/dollars, because due to the technical errors, it may not be worth your 50/60 dollars.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game looks and plays beautifully. I am using two Nvidia 295 with my I7 at 3GHz and the game just runs smoothly for me. I love the racing portions! It is kind of like pod racer on wheels. On the shooting side it gives you a somewhat engaging story with an "open world" environment. If you look at the review dates it seems that most people made a review when they couldn't run the game. Cry babies! For the rest of us it is just another great id game. Rage will be a great new franchise for them. Thanks Carmack!
    Update:
I only have one grief point. The single player campaign is too short and the ending feels abrupt. In fact it feels like that somebody suddenly wanted to push out the game... Sadly, I had to lower my score now!

The launch of Rage has been plagued by bugs and this is simply inexcusable. Now, after having applied the latest patches and installed the latest video drivers, the game admittedly runs pretty good. The framerate is smooth despite my aging gaming PC, but texture pop remains a nuisance.

The game itself then. Well, as this is an Id game with a new highly anticipated graphics engine let's start by judging the graphics. And no, I'm not convinced by the graphics: some areas look pretty good but some of the indoor areas are plain ugly. Very low resolution textures and low-poly objects (aka pixel vomit) simply gave flashbacks to 2005 or even earlier games. I'm pretty sure that the graphical engine is capable of much more on a current PC but the designer chose to stick to consoles as their performance standard. Furthermore, the graphics and the environment are very static. The sky is a simple static texture, almost no dynamic shadows (one of the prominent features in Doom 3) and the environment is not destructible at all - even unloading your rifle onto a china vase does simply nothing...

The gameplay is OK, or at least some moments in the game provide solid FPS action with rather decent AI. Unfortunately, the flow of the game is continuously being broken by car driving, hanging around in the hub towns and bartering your items for ammo. Also, the racing element doesn't contribute much: the racing is really Mario Kart-style and disrupts the realism of the game itself. The FPS/Racer hybrid simply doesn't work at all. The story is mediocre and failed to get me, as a player, involved. And what about the bland ending ? Or rather the lack of a proper ending... It simply feels that the game was unfinished, both technically ans story-wise. This is really a disappointment from iD - a first to me considering their track record.

You have many options to get through them but stealth really isn't one of them. Even if you kill the first guy without drawing attention to yourself the rest of the mooks find you instantly. There is very little exploration possibility and every time you go into a fighting situation you're pretty much sent on rails through it.

When you're not in an fighting scene you're either in one of a few settlements or driving around. The settlements are very claustrophobic and limited. The sidequests are short, too few and too simple. NPC interaction is handled well, the character animations and art is one of the best things about the game. On the other side of the coin most of the character backgrounds, personalities, and motivations are shallow or nonexistent. You as a character have no real option but to follow on the quests you are given without really knowing anything. You don't know who you are, you don't know where you are, and you don't know what is going on despite the fact that everyone talks to you like you should know these things.

The end of the game was kind of open leaving me to believe that there will be sequels and that much of this will be explained, but for the most part it was a straightforward plot with no twists or turns, a generic shoot 'em up with minor rpg elements like quests and a construction system. I don't feel like it's a good excuse for leaving players in the dark as much as they did. Looking back on it, I probably spent about 20 hours playing it but when I think about what I actually did in the game it feels like 2 hours of game play with 18 hours of filler.

Terrific game and a fantastic new engine. Well worth your time and a must play for anyone who loves ids' past games, with great art direction and simple but very fun gameplay: just typical id. It's a shame that the PC release wasn't given more love but it's nothing a patch can't fix. For this reason I can't give it a 10 ...so id: please don't do this for Doom 4.

I think a lot of users are being very harsh towards this game. I am half way through the story (as far as I can tell) and I've found it fairly gripping and enjoyable. It's not heavy though, it doesn't require much thought and in comparison is no where near as epic as Portal 2, but much better than Brink.

The game play is very solid. The mechanics of the game are reliable and consistent.

The game play is very solid. The mechanics of the game are reliable and consistent. The weapons all feel nice and powerful even, however the enemies do just seem to take more and more hits to kill as you move on, as opposed to using more clever attacks. There's a certain fear factor but it's over-ridden when you realise that playing on easy will make you virtually invincible, the other combat that I didn't really like was how mostly it ended up being bit of an ammo drain. The maps are very nice for combat but you can't run over them enough. If you've played Mirror's Edge, Brink or Half-life 2 then you will be disappointed by the lack of physics or the ability to run over cover easily. Jumping is practically useless in Rage but crouching is not. Rage rewards you well for clever combat and stealth attacks which in the end makes it feel a lot more fun. The combination of FPS, RPG and racer does not feel rushed. They flow together very nicely and although it's easy to see where each takes it's dominance (Racing is for improving you car: For travel. RPG is for improving your fighting chance: For survival. FPS is the actual meat of the game) this is actually a nice feature. It allows you to get all sorts of varied experiences. The term 'open world' does not (however) apply to Rage. It is in no way an 'open world' game. If you've played games like Oblivion/Fallout you will be fair disappointed by the limited area you can access. Most of each map is not accessible. I would compare Rage to Bioshock mixed with Half-life 2 as a best next of kin for game play. Mostly linear, with some RPG elements, some mutants, some badass weapons. Graphics is very good. There are some blurry textures but if you compare this to a game released last year then you will see it's a big jump up anyway. It's extremely well optimised; my PC wasn't meant to be able to run it but it still does at +60fps! The best part visually is that each area is extremely detailed and does vary quite a lot. Overall it's highly enjoyable but don't expect it to blow you away. The thing is... most games don't these days, my favourite game is still Portal 2 because it's Story was the best I've ever played... it's going to be hard to compete after that.

I did wait quite some time before giving Rage a shot - and even then after all the bad user reviews present I had to find a friend who purchased Rage first and give it a spin at his home before I would give id my hard earned bucks. Glad I did, because id with Carmack's current mentality isn't getting anymore of my dough. I have been a die hard id Software fan since the days of Classic Doom and I still actually play Classic Doom on a frequent basis (jDoom/Doomsday Engine) so I have (or rather, had) no negative bias towards id and Quake 2 still remains my favorite DM proving grounds despite it being a rather painful experience trying to pull together a group of friends to relive some of Quake 2's glory days. I mean if one is going to take gameplay over graphics then may as well go all the way, right? If you want to play a properly good FPS and don't mind the dated graphics - simply look at id's past portfolio. If you want to play a properly good FPS with a properly modern graphics engine - buy Hard Reset. And until Carmack fixes his botched mentality, all I can say about id Software and any future games they have in stall for us is; Avoid. Expand

-Texture bugs which are part of the design which will never get solved. The only game in 2011 that has textures from 1999.

There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said about this game. When I originally began playing this game (for PC) I was faced with many of the same problems as other gamers, i.e. screen tearing, flat-lining fps drops and the usual host of time wasting frustration of getting the game to play well. But then courtesy of some forum reviews and beta Nvidia drivers (now full drivers courtesy of BF3), and all was well in the gaming world again.

I anxiously booted up the campaign mode to be greeted with a quite glamorous intro and rather reminiscent opening scene that reminded me of Fallout 3. "Huh...this isn't very new" said my inner lover of post-apocalyptic cataclysms but I quickly silenced it. "Hush!" my concious retorted back, "give it a chance!". So off I went, into the world of...ummm...Rage? With warring bandit faction groups and not without a splash of critters that looked like a mix of zombies and lap dogs all mixed in with a civilized group of rag-tag characters that are simply trying to make a living selling bottle caps...I mean post-apocalyptic bullets...I mean credits...er...never mind.

Progressing through the game it quickly became apparent that I'd seen many of the game features before. Recharging health (Halo), Driving supped up dune buggies with guns a blazing (Borderlands), Core mission based story line with sub-missions to build up money (Fallout), ability to engineer new bits and bobs courtesy of "schematics" (Fallout), looting corpses (Fallout/Deadspace) mostly linear mapped faction hide-outs with the occasional hidden gem (Deadspace), Post apocalyptic story of a man from the past that seems to have been raised by a mix of John Wayne, Chuck Norris and Rambo... and the list goes on and on of comparisons.

Before I beat this game like a dead horse I'll get straight to the point. The game is not bad, i.e. if you enjoy this genre of gaming it's a decent way to get your fix of bad ass guns blazing going to ram rocks, dust and shot gun shells up your mutated wazoo sort of game with good looking visuals (if you're playing PC with a decent graphics card). That being said, if you were hoping for "the next big thing" that's not what you'll find. I did appreciate the work that was put into the characters, their fluid motions and correctness when speaking made them seem more real in a quirky cartoon sort of way. I also appreciated the ability to have all my weapons at once while also being able to create some interesting (and deadly) little schematic based toys to do some damage with.

I even appreciated some of the (rather limited) gun fights in (rather cramped) open world? travel spaces. But ultimately its all been done before (sorry ID) and other games have done it better. I'll admit you could probably beat this game with just the shotgun and enough bullets (on hard mode).

Looking back on this game I'll agree with most of the other negative posts, it's a lot of money to pay for a neopolitan game when we were hoping for chocolate explosion with a twist of Redbull. I feel a bit silly for paying such a high price for it, but I was lured in by pretty trailers (damn my impulsiveness and ADD!)

If I had to say anything about this game, it'll probably be something like Brink. Wait a couple of months and pick it up for $19.99 on sale on Steam.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok.... so, iD wanted to make an RPG shooter in a post-apocalyptic setting with racing. VERY COOL IDEA. Unfortunately, they really, really screwed the pooch. ==========Your RPG elements consist of choosing one three suits with minor differences, three armor increases, and obtaining blueprints for building items. F-

=========Your FPS elements seem interesting, with multiple ammo types and several guns.... unfortunately, excepting the crossbow, which is just given to you, like most of the weapons, the shooting system is about as innovative and exciting as a plate of cold grits. You get thrown maybe three or four upgrades, you can't find any neat weapons out in the wild, you buy all your weapons and upgrades in shops (or someone just outright gives them to you), and there is no such thing as alternate fire, prone, leaning around corners, modifying your weapons, bullet travel time or physics. C

=========Continuing on FPS, the AI is extremely predictable, making it basically a chore after a certain point to wade through THE EXACT SAME ENCOUNTERS over and over again. More on that in a sec. There are no real innovative ammo types, excepting maybe the 6-in-1 pistol ammo. There is no stealth component.... once you engage, you're engaged and there is no benefit to using the one silent weapon, other than it's a crossbow. For a game with boss fights, they're kind of pathetic and sparse. The big build up to the final mission is...incredibly disappointing to say the least... It's really an understatement to say it's bad. D-

==========As for the post-apocalyptic setting, that is pretty par-on.... if you don't mind cheesy characters who don't reflect the values of people living in a society wanting for almost every necessary good. The mutants are interesting, but they're the only real â

    2. Graphics are STILL not top notch for a PC game. The excuse that it is designed mostly for consoles is inexcusable. If you are designing for a console only, leave it there. 3. Nice weapon and ammo

The games they have always put out have been straight up FPS games that push the quality of graphics forward. They have never put out a game with a solid story but they are moving towards that. The combat parts of this game are very solid and are what its all about. I can see what id is trying to do, they are trying to make a more well rounded game not just a straight up shooter. This missed the mark by a bit but they aren't too far off. The story isn't the strongest and you should be able to customize your guns to your own liking, that's why I only gave it a 9. The game really shows me the potential for games coming out of id after this. The game engine is there, the graphics and level of detail are defiantly there, they just need to work on the story and RPG elements a little bit and they will have one of the most popular titles out. I understand the harsh critics and low score the game has gotten due to technical problems. As for myself though, I only had to set one setting to get rid of tearing, and then ran flawlessly ever since. On to the game, while the textures are sort of muddy up close with certain objects, I find the world, atmospheric, and it runs very fluid, so it's a good tradeoff in my opinion. Worst thing for playability is stuttering and uneven framerates.

It's a game which mixes classical FPS, with some crazy driving physics and a bit of RPG, and it's not to be expected all parts come off flawlessly, or in great depth. The story is neglible, but it gives some context for your actions, the RPG bit, or rather, the fact that you got money and items and are able to make stuff - , I like it a lot, it's simple, but I wouldn't want a more intricate system, as it'd just slow down the pace. I have no great grudges against the game, it took me a week+ of casual gaming to finish, spending time with minigames and generally fooling around. Although, the end was kind of a anti climax. And what's the point wiht turrets vs spider sentry when they so easily may be tipped over? And you can't pick it up afterwards without dismantling into loot - unless it didnt fire at all that is, which helps a bit. But I don't see any reason to use it instead of spider in any situation.

And you definitively can't note it 0. It's nervous, fun, and adrenaline-full. The exteriors are gorgeous and the character design is amazing. Sounds and game sensations are really awesome. anyways. the weapons i saw so far seemed crappy and unimaginative. same goes for the few characters and bad guys who now seem more stiff (maybe bethesda's influence)... seriously, a shambler had way more SOUL and fluidity than all of the characters combined. the ATV i drove to my first mission was lame and pointless as was killing the bad guys for no apparent reason.

Unless it is my video card I find the quality of some of the textures to be poor, especially the parts of the city. I also find the game locking randomly, although it has never crashed.

The FPS part of the game is largely excellent. What lets it down are the driving parts and the rather hotch potch characters. The races are simplistic arcade affairs. Roaming around from area to area is monotonous, only broken by the equally monotonous encounters with the bandits. The characters themselves are not that engaging and their speech is ruined by quite horrendous lip sync. There are sound issues too, with some of the music stopping prematurely and the implementation of 5.1 sound seems to be at odds with every other game I've ever played with 5.1 sound.

All that saves the game is the FPS part, but even here there are problems - some of the monsters are just plain dumb with literally two moves to their name. It was bad enough in 2001 but in 2011 there is no excuse. Shame because what is good about the FPS is actually really good and I have had some proper Doom style moments where you are literally scrabbling with your weapons whilst being swamped with impressively agile and well animated enemies.

The icing on the cake? The fact its essentially dumbed down for console gamers and it shows. 5 is the best mark I could give to a game I have waited patiently for since I saw the first trailer. I am disappointed the graphics are stunted by the need to make them work on a 6 year old console and the fact you feel like you are just retreading ground just to extend a storyline is plain lazy. From the so-called fathers of FPS I expected more.

To play games with a decent frame rate and graphics this good is truly a pleasure.

In terms of hardware and associated issues, my PC is a few years old with a fairly recent graphics card. It has 2.4ghz core duo / 2 GB RAM / Nvidia 260 GTX. Initially I was fairly disappointed by buggy graphics, texture creep and screen tearing, but the recent patches to the game and updated video drivers have essentially solved these problems. I'm now getting a beatiful graphical experience with no tearing, minimal texture pop-up and a solid 60FPS. (Q6600 @3GHz, 560Ti 2GB VRAM, 4GB RAM, 1280x1024).

The gameplay is reasonably simplistic, post-apocalyptic, quest driven FPS/RPG. However, it is certainly cut from the same cloth as Doom and Quake. I constantly find myself smiling away as I circle-strafe round mutants fragging left, right and centre. I didn't realise how much I miss the action-arcade style of FPS since everything's gotten a bit too realistic and creepy-creepy, one-shot-one-kill. This is nothing like that and all the better for it.

The driving elements are again fairly simplistic, but well executed and they add value.

This is the most fun I've had on my PC for quite some time. The graphics are definitely next-gen and the bugs are largely fixed (on my setup at least). I think it's a shame this game had such a troubled launch. It deserves to do well.

The good: It's not a bad game. The bad: It's isn't a good game either, definitely not $60 good. I'd place its value in the $30 range. Suffice to say Rage is just plain mediocre in every conceivable way. Graphically speaking, it is simply not impressive, absolutely nothing about it separates it from anything everybody else is doing. Combat is pedestrian and repetitive, nothing really innovative. Weapons are mostly generic. AI is more artificial than intelligent. And health? It's the same recharging style we've seen ever since Halo came out. While you can carry your full arsenal with you, you'll find the sniper rifle and the shotgun or assault rifle is enough to beat nearly any level. The overall gameplay mechanics seems as if nobody could decide if it should be a Borderlands-like RPG-FPS or a straight FPS game, ultimately settling on something in between (skewing more towards the latter) and doing neither style particularly well. Story is as weak and forgettable as it could get. Missions are repetitive. Non-outside maps are linear. Real boss battles are rare, and don't appear where you would expect them to, this includes THE VERY FINAL LEVEL. Yes, this game ends not with a adrenaline-filled boss fight, but a feeble mook rush that the player can easily dispatch of with no problem what-so-ever. And the ending... Okay, that STRAIGHT UP SUCKED. As FMV that lasts less than a minute that RESOLVES NOTHING. You never meet the supposed Big Bad leading the enemies. Or anyone in charge of even some them. The main antagonists of the story have zero characterization at all. Aside from that, the four bosses the game does offer are wimps, and offer no real challenge at all. The races are not interesting, upgrade the engine and tires and you're virtually unbeatable at racing. Rally (a.k.a. haphazardly placed checkpoint) races tend to be more frustrating than fun. The entire game world feels much smaller than one, maybe two, average Borderlands maps, consists almost entirely of canyons, and happily falls into the trap of Real is Brown for the first half and Real is Grey for the second. This game is pure mediocrity. Expand

Very disappointed. The "bugs" everyone mentions i had no problems with after the ATI fix. It was the overall game play from start to finish. At $60 you better believe i was going to tough it out. Graphics were phenomenal, i can't fault them there. Yes, when racing forward it tends to get "blotchy" but it is hardly a game killer. Very small and almost unnoticeable. It is literally Fallout plus Borderlands minus all the fun stuff equals Rage. When the price drops to around $20, only then will i say it was worth it. My pros: Great graphics. Racing, although repetitive, is pretty fun. Some of the items you can craft are really fun to play with. Cons: At $60, i expected something more. Story is dull. Lack of diversified "baddies". How many are there? 5? just with new textures? You can never have enough weapons....so being stuck with the same ones for the entire game sucks. This game only has 20 hours worth of game play. I probably could have beaten it sooner...call it my general curiosity to see if i got something new with side questing. You really don't feel that need to replay it. My only guess is that they purposely left out a lot of stuff to possibly sell add-ons? It needs bigger maps...more incentives...more weapons...a larger variety of "baddies... The user score is a lot closer to what the game should be scored at. At $60 i rate it at 4, at $20 i would rate it at 7. It is just missing too much to be fully worth that 60. Expand

Had many issues as many other folks here. Gameplay is linear, repetitive with lazy game design eg like DA2. For a 3 DVD install the game is way too short and has only 2 parts. The ending is terrible and abrupt. Carmack is joining Romero in Daikatana hell!

I have to ask myself while i play this game, does ID remember it made Doom? Because at the end after you go through a pretty decent shooting fest, theres no boss. NO smiggin boss at the end of an ID game!

Well it's unfair to say this game deserves such low score such as a 0, 1 or 2. We, PC gamers did nothing wrong! We didn't deserve this disgrace! And We are not genetically vile people, who can be feed with these kind of products!
This product could have been a mediocre game IF the programming were at least average. Now it's one of the biggest disappointments in the last 10 years.

I actually created an account here at metacritic to share my review of this game because i was soo disappointed. ID used to be a legendary company, but this game is a horrible console port, a dated linear and boring game that seems like it's stuck in the past. Don't waste your money on this game, you'll only regret it.

taking that all in I highly suggest giving this a play but considerign its length issues id wait until the price dropped to 40 bucks 60 is bit much for its length

For something that has been done over and over since the 90s, it shouldn't be this hard to get it right.
At least it shouldn't be this easy to get it so brutally wrong!
Overall... Rage is the sad result of the modern game industry. Rushed, unpolished, overblown, unoriginal, and released with no responsibility or respect. Weapon control is terrible, it mostly feels like shooting BB ' at

Overall... Rage is the sad result of the modern game industry. Rushed, unpolished, overblown, unoriginal, and released with no responsibility or respect. Weapon control is terrible, it mostly feels like shooting BB ' at the enemy... The environments are visually stunning, but the extreme level of linearity prevents you from wondering away from "invisible-wall" protected path, overall ruining what "could have been" an exciting experience.
I cant say much about the story, its pretty insignificant. Limited/no character interaction in the story, no build ups, no smell of a plot twist in the air.. No smell of any plot at all tbh.
Let it be known for the record that I have yet to finish the entire game, but at this point, im not sure that I want to...

    Conclusion:

I would wait for Borderlands 2... I hardly think it will fail as bad.
Don't buy Rage unless you are prepared to be patching, fixing and tweaking away all evening, only to be rewarded with a facepalm.
I wouldn't say it's as bad as buying a bag of crap, but at least with the bag you don't have to get crap all over your hands.

    Builder out.

Besides the technical issues, the gameplay is really fun. It's definitely a classic shooter with being able to hold 10 weapons and having HP (although it does regen). Bots, turrets, dynamite bolts, and pop rockets are a few of the craftable items that make combat all the more fun. Enemies dodge and cover and roll to give a good challenge. Story was mediocre but certainly passable, and most of the NPCs were quite original and charming. I definitely recommend playing it once the technical issues are fixed. Expand

If not for all the buggy graphics on PC this would have been a good game. Game is fun to play for me, but it lags the replay value. No really multiplayer is another big downfall to the game for me.

People need to understand that this is id's new engine. Despite it being cross-platform, you need a powerful PC to run the game on maximum settings. This is not id Tech 3. It's id Tech 5! So you might as well think about upgrading your system if you have an obsolete graphics card and/or processor.
People also need to understand that nowadays almost every PC game has some consolized characteristics. This is inevitable. If you develop a game for all platforms at once, you have to appeal to a mixed audience. You need to make decisions. So keep that in mind.
I've been a long-time dedicated fan of id Software's FPS creations, but I admit I had doubts when they announced this game. I didn't think they would be able to let go of the usual formula to create something different with RAGE. Then I started to play it yesterday, and I just simply got chained to the game for 8 hours straight, and the next day I finished it in another long session. To be honest, I already feel that I'm going to play through it again. This is pretty unusual, because it doesn't happen too often to me.
First of all, the visuals. I was stunned by how game looks - in a good way. I understand that some of the textures are low-res at the moment, but I am fine with that, because what's important in the game is very well detailed. By the way, Carmack just promised a patch on his twitter, that's is going to alleviate this issue. The thing is, if you look at the game as a whole, there is no other FPS right now that has such looks and all these extra post-processing features, while running at a stable frame rate of 60 without any hiccups. So, before you judge RAGE, play through it and you'll know what I'm talking about. And the content is just endless. You'll know why it takes up 22GB on your HDD. It's size is so huge because the art of the game is exceptional. You can clearly see that every character, area and architecture of the camps and towns has been well thought-out and carefully designed, modeled and built by professionals. The atmosphere changes all the time while keeping you constantly entertained. You can find so many types of characters in it, such as wastelanders, mutants, steampunk people, hi-tech freaks, giant monsters, buggies! And so much more. I'm not going to spoil anything, feel free to explore yourself.
Last, but not least... the gameplay. I was so happy that it plays just like Quake did (yes, you can even strafe-jump and bunny hop while sprinting, lolz ;p). The movement, the aiming and the shooting is exactly the same, but it's combined with today's trendy FPS features - such as regenerating health, ADS, grenades and equipments (the Wingstick and the Drone own everything). It also has some signs of RPG, such as inventory, looting, crafting, and NPC interaction. They're similar to Fallout 3, but in a very simplified way. I think there was no harm done by that. It's already a lot of extra, compared to what we are used to in id's games. The bottom line is that all these things combined humiliate every other fast-paced action FPS available right now. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Buggy-game part. Basically RAGE is a 2in1 game. The racer part feels like a separate game integrated into it, although it fits just fine. RAGE wouldn't be itself without it.
My only problem was the difficulty. On the most difficult Nightmare setting the game was no challenge for me. It wasn't a question how I finish it... the only question was: when? Here comes the other problem: it was over kind of suddenly. These are the only reasons I'm giving it a 9, and not a 10. Simply put: play it!

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
