All bugs aside, this is a damn fun game. I find it sad how so many people hated it, and while I can see why, I myself thought it was really fun. The shooting is solid, the ai is good, the new engine (while buggy, derp) is fun and done pretty well. Nice job, ID, just make sure Rage 2 is better cared for.

Oh my lord....this game was so bad. I kept playing to actually see if the game would get...same effect as Crysis...nope...greatly disappointing. The ending...wow...I will give it a solid 2 because the graphics had their moments. Whoever bought the collectors edition, I feel sorry for you.

A lot of complaints here seem to be about graphical problems. My PC is a riduculous beast so I have never had so much as a pixel out of place. I wanted so much to like this game, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and once it was mine I was suitably impressed with the detailed landscape. I thought the people and the weapons looked average. The racing aspect was irritating to me, it was a little too sloppy to have any real point. The ideas behind the game are good, and I applaud ID for doing something different, it's just that, somethings missing. Cant quite put my finger on it. There are plenty of annoying console things, but that doesn't worry me. As I play, I keep thinking, thats cool or I like that or wow that looks great, but I don't seem to be having any fun. My friends are over 30 gaming veterans and they loved it, so please make up your own mind. Not worth the bad reviews here, but worth a look Expand

A game that tries too hard to be "Fallout 3 meets Borderlands" falls short on both accounts. The game is absolutely gorgeous, but that doesn't do much to save it from its short single-player experience and uninspired plot. I really tried to like this one, but in the end, I was seriously underwhelmed.

Graphically, the world of Rage is ultra-realistic, and stands toe-to-toe with Crytek's engines that drive the Crysis titles. Also, Rage's enemies behave in unique and intelligent ways: foes advance on your position while utilizing covering fire, or swing from rafters with acrobatic agility. Finally, the physics of Rage allow for a plethora of death animations depending on your weapon choice and targeting. All of this adequately demonstrates what the engine can achieve and might still accomplish in future games. //Rage's particular implementation of the new game engine, on the other hand, is not so impressive. id ignores a decade of gameplay advances spurred by the Half-Life franchise and the first Crysis. Levels are not only linear in progression, they are essentially one-dimensional in a physical sense, too. Most are simple hallways lined with obstacles on either side that prevent the player from choosing alternate routes through the dungeon. Even the jump ability is virtually useless, since the player rarely can jump on or over boxes, fences, or other objects, drastically reducing any sense of realistic interaction with the environment. In this way, Rage is a big step backward even from the original Doom games. What was id thinking? //Rage is id's first real attempt at writing a storyline that structures gameplay, and here, too, it falls short. Non-player characters are wooden caricatures, and the story offers no possibility for meaningful relationships or allegiances. Dialogue is unimaginative, stereotyped, and predictable. As others have remarked, the characters in the story never rise above their basic roles as facilitators for new missions. //The missions themselves are mostly unrelated jaunts into different areas of the Rage world without an overarching purpose that motivates your endeavors. Rather, your character feels like a mercenary for hire, willing to work for anyone and everyone for the right price. Over the course of these missions, major questions are never answered (I'd say this is a spoiler, except that there's hardly any story to spoil): Who is the "authority"? What do they want? Who is the "resistance"? Why should you work for them? What happened after the asteroid decimated the earth? Why do you have nanobots in your body that quickly heal your wounds? id vastly underestimates its audience if it assumes players will be satisfied by such a thread-bare story. //I suspect Rage was created mostly as a demonstration of the id Tech 5's capabilities so that id can license the game engine to other software developers. The game itself is an uninspired hodgepodge of simplistic scenarios that might have been developed as six or seven different games had id wanted to create an encompassing gaming experience. While I understand id needs to license its new engine for business purposes, there must be other ways to communicate the engine's potential without subjecting players to such underwhelming gameplay and story. As a shooter game, Rage has excelled in most areas: graphics, story, and possibly item variety. But the rush of a PC creation inevitably brings up horrifying issues: constant crashes, cliched quests, overhyped marketing and etc. Is it a fine game to pass by on a boring day, but not something that would grab the interests of a hardcore FPS player.

I really enjoyed this game; slick and fast first person action, this game pulls you along with story and missions to keep you hooked. [Story] A meteor has hit the earth and killed off the humans. You are a survivor thanks to having been dormant in a protected Ark. You emerge from the Ark to find a modern day wild west with The Authority trying to dominate, colonies of survivors, bandits, mutants, cool looking clothes and tattoos ! Comparisons to Borderlands will be inevitable but they are different games - both great. Commerce and construction of in-game items is straight forward, essential and fun - do not miss out - build as many robots as you can and use them when you are outnumbered in the game. This game hits the FPS sweet spot, after 45 hours of game play I really wish there had been more side missions. I am hoping for DLC : )

[Challenges] There is a main story has missions and in each colony there are side missions to accomplish; racing missions to upgrade your car, commando missions to clean out infested mutant tunnels, item missions to build or acquire special items, snipping missions to defend transactions. On normal difficulty I was able to accomplish 90% of the missions the first time through without a reload - I am OK with that; if you are an FPS dog then turn it up a notch! In FPS sections, the game space and environment is big enough with lots of room for flanking, covering, sniping, run and gun; all the usual elements that we have come to love in FPS. Weapons are awesome - especially the Revolver - quite apropos - construct all items and try them all out. Also, the AI is quite good so get your caffeine; I especially enjoyed the AI behaviour depending on damaged limb and physics of the moment - hilarious ! The end story is weak and kind on makes you feel like Halo2 - suddenly it is over....The physics and the control of the fully upgraded dune buggy in one of the bumpier maps made one minigame race very very very hard, it took me 30 races to take first place, compared to 1-4 for all others!

[Audience and Skill level] All skills levels will like this Game Smoothie - a juicy blend of Quake4, Borderlands and Fallout 3 in a beautifully painted landscape tall glass ! Run down to the Steam diner and pick it up now !

[MyPC] i7-2600K 3.4GHz / ASUS Z68 ProGen3 / 8Gig RAM / Radeon 6870 / 1920x1200 / W7 PRO SP1 [Controls] I played with a keyboard and trackball. Keys are easy to remap and show up in the on-screen instructions. Sweet. Controls are tight Tight TIGHT; switching weapons quickly and using the perfect combination as you run and gun is always great fun. This was FPS heaven.
[Graphics] The game world is simply beautiful, but you will need to use a custom configuration file to make this game playable; find it on the Steam Forum by FusedCore {thanks guy}, it will take you ONLY 10 mins. It amazes me that Id released a game crippled by poor video configurations - but this is a solved issue now. The game never hiccuped after the custom config file: I used the Hi-End config. [Sound] I always play with headphones; voice acting is professional, 3D sound is great, SFX bang on, the music is surprisingly serious and ominous - next time lighten up guys ; )

[Replay+AlternativeModes] This game has a bunch of co-op only levels {Legend} and multiplayer; I should probably check these out.

[Children] Adults only, no if ands or buts.

If it's not working for you now, it's either because you're stupid, your PC sucks, or both. I don't have any trouble running the game with my i5 2500k and two 6970s crossfired. I get well over 60fps maxed, and it looks great. The shooting is fantastic. The ballistics engine is lifelike and satisfying. The graphics do look fantastic, although there can be some pop-in from time to time. The story is somewhat forgettable, as is to be expected of this type of game. Well, not so much the story, but the story telling. Going from NPC to NPC running fetch quests can and does get a little old. I will say this about Rage: the story's plot is actually pretty good. The opening sequence of the game is one of the most beautiful and moving openings that I have seen in a while. This game really has a lot going for it. Probably it's biggest strength, even in spite of all of it's shortcomings, is the it's just an absolute blast to play. Wow. Look at all of those 0 scores below. Are you people really that stupid? Look at what the reviewers scored it at on average. That is more like it. And you wonder why game developers NEVER listen to fans. You have no credibility. You're fickle. You are all fickle. Rage, a 0? It is idiots like you that bring down the average score. Instead of being fair, you morons give the game a 0. Why? Because you want your review to make a difference, by God!!! Little pathetic punks. I thought about giving Rage a 10, because in light of all of these false reviews, it needs all of that help it can get. But you know what? I won't. I gave this game an 8 because I think that the story could have been developed a little better and because the ending left me hanging. This is a good FPS and the guns are fun to use, as well as the ammo choices. Didn't care much for the buggy's or driving mechanics of the game but once I was used to them, it was manageable. The voice acting was good if somewhat limited in dialogue but no real complaints. The easter eggs are fun to get and there are a lot of things to to hunt for and find, which i liked.

The card game is fun. I was a big fan of the card game in FFVIII, so the game in RAGE was acceptable. Overall, a great product and if a sequel comes out, I will buy it.

This amazing feature comes from id's new ID TECH 5. IT5 is a wonderful benchmark in the video game industry, although that being said, it does have its problems. Upon load up the game, I encountered a barrage of texture problems and I heard many others did too. If you can mange to get your drivers to work like I did, then you should be fine for the rest of the game. Every detail in Rage is perfected with astounding accuracy. From the sewers to the streets, Rage pays a close amount of attention to detail. Even the characters will make you stare in awe for a second, even if they don't carry the plot forward. On that subject, the characters play an important role, at least in the first half. The first half of the game is an involving and interesting story. The characters will make you want to find out more about your mysterious awakening. However, after the big turning point, the plot suddenly becomes bland and generic, to the point where I didn't care anymore. In fact there are several pot points that are mentioned, but never carried out. The ending is so abrupt and short that I didn't even realize I had beaten the game, I though it was just a awkward cut-scene. Through out Rage the are a couple Boss battles, which usually involve a colossal sized mutant. Yet, despite all the build up, there isn't even a sign of a boss at the end, which used to be a tradition in id games. Rage offers a sort-of small multiplayer mode, as compared to other id games which focus primarily on that. There are 2 options, A driving mode where you drive around in your customized buggy and snatch up objectives for points. And the Co-Op mode, where you and one friend run through a section and eliminate all AI enemies. The multiplayer is fun, but ultimately didn't last for me. I ended up beating all of the Co-Op missions and got bored of the driving.

Rage is a fun shooter. id software made an impressive comeback in the FPS genre that they created. The environments are gorgeous and the gameplay is superb. Although its plot and character flaws are a real issue, the majority of the game is fun and interesting. I very much look forward to a sequel with improved mechanics.

The enemy animations are so far beyond most games it's not worth comparing. The plot/narrative characterization won't win any awards, but the environmental storytelling will. It is its own character and it succeeds on many levels. That aesthetic direction appeals to my personal sensibilities more than others, clearly. And that's fine. Some utterly inane dialogue (eg."Do you feel the need for speed?" or "Drive like you mean it." said most times when entering a race). Small, I know, but just indicative of the general lack of a **** the developers gave for the writing (and no, the delivery of aforementioned lines does not come off as sarcasm/irony/parody). The game has the audacity to send you driving back to the same locations and playing through the map again, though often with the added 'diversity' of simply replaying it in the opposite direction to your first outing. Also; no matter what anyone says, this game feels A LOT like Borderlands (yes, I'm aware that development times for the two coincided, Rage starting first actually, but still, id software had plenty of time to improve the formula, instead it offers up even less), it's FAR less enjoyable/addictive than Borderlands. And finally, aptly, the ending: which is an anti-climatic, thankless, unengaging and pathetic excuse for anything resembling story and combat.

This game is overall an average and I for once agree with the professional reviewers - if you set aside huge expectations that ID has built up prior to release (and i am one of those who fell for the hype and paid full pre-release price) then it is ok and even fun at times. It is a game that tried to be something much bigger than it is and at that it failed. It combines too much and those things don't feel as one complete game world.

I liked the care and details with which the levels were designed. Invisible barriers make you feel you play Doom 3 with some kind of glitch making walls invisible. In fact, one area is totally Doom 3-like - not even sure what all that blood and some alien outgrowth on the walls have to do with the Rage story.

Graphics quality leaves a mixed feeling due to very low resolution of close-ups - especially in darker areas. Other than that games looks very good and I do get great performanc eon 560TI. The weapons and the fight mechanics are very nice but some missions are too easy and boring. Story, is ok for a shooter but definetely lacks for an RPG. All the build/buy/sell activities feel boring and unnecessary. Driving is done pretty well but again, unnecessary. Minigames add pretty nice spice to the whole package and are done very well.

As far as bugs etc. I had no real issues with the game. However, I played it after the initial patches.

My biggest personal problem with it is the ending. Not to make this a spoiler, but for those who played the game - what was the purpose of BFG again?

Driver support for controllers is a nightmare; I lost count of the number of times I went through various processes, restarted my iMac, etc, etc, before finally getting the blasted thing to work. The game itself is filled with dire, dull, excruciatingly bland cut-scenes which cannot be skipped. Replete with characters it's tremendously hard to give a monkey's about, and who spiel out the most unutterably bland dialogue. "I'm a mechanic. You can fix your car here. Press Y to have me fix your car. You can also call me by radio..." Bluergh. I've taken to checking my emails / cutting away from Rage whilst the dull-as-ditchwater cutscenes play out. Gameplay is uninspiring. The RPG / upgradeable element is almost non-existent. 'Choose one of four armour suits, which'll give you a static benefit throughout the game.' Great. Firing weapons is remarkably tedious: all weapons have 100% predictable stats (unlike Borderlands), with crosshairs that *do not waver one inch*, even in hyper-zoomed sniper rifle mode. There's no element of chance, either; every weapon (even the pistol) hits 100% if your entirely stable crosshairs are 100% on the target. Bleurgh. Silent weapons - afaict, and having completed the single campaign - are utterly pointless, bringing no benefits whatsoever. Even the potentially interesting weapons - like mind control bolts - turn out to be futile 95% of the time, and only marginally less useful than usual bullets the other 5%. AI is dull. Everyone behaves the same. Everyone seeks exactly the same cover points: keep throwing grenades until everything's obliterated. Things only get remotely interesting in the later levels, with LARGE hordes of melee fighters. Penultimately, the racing rapidly switches between ridiculously easy and a matter of raw luck; the 'driving' aspect of the game only brings 4 cars with it, each of which have a very finite number of worthwhile upgrades. Finally, the campaign is chuffing tiny. Like, 11hrs and 20 minutes in - and I thought I was taking things slowly - I've finished a 'normal' campaign. Replay value feels minimal, though I'm trying to gather the inspiration to have a go at 'hard' or 'nightmare.' Compare that with Borderlands - the best part of a year on, I've got 2 characters running the various campaigns, with well over 60hrs of gameplay between them. I was kinda stunned when I realised I'd finished Rage, in a very much 'is that ACTUALLY it?!' kinda way. On any replays, I'll look for a bit more in the way of side missions / exploring... but I get the feeling there isn't much there. All in all, vapid, dull, characterless, bland. Beautiful scenery. But - good grief - I really can't understand why anyone would choose this over Borderlands. Or even Bioshock (or Bioshock 2, soon to be released). Particularly on a Mac, at the moment, Rage is nowhere near worth it. Expand

Really just a very underrated game here, the gunplay is so satisfying, it makes the gunplay in games like bf3 or mw3 feel 'soggy' if that makes sense. Sort of like the difference between typing on a nice high quality mechanical keyboard VS typing on an old beaten up cheapo dell rubber dome keyboard.

The story was a little lacking, and I would have liked to see a few more rpg-ish elements here and there, but overall it is just a blast, from the shooting to the driving to just being really fully sucked in to the world by the astoundingly good graphics (the sky in particular is really just amazing).

First thing I noticed right out of the box was this game has THE worst screen-tearing I've ever seen in any game I've played. Tears pop up so frequently and are so big that they take a decent chunk of our screen. Next is the infamous texture pop-in which means textures don't load until you look at them. You don't need to have tech understanding to see how this sounds really stupid. What this means is that textures visually load when you look at them, so every time you go around a corner or move around everything is all blurry. Even when textures do load properly they still look low-res and everything is so under-saturated the game might as well be black and white. Add this to the fact that on release this game had NO graphics options of any description so all of the above was not fixable. This is by far the worst game I've played in a long time and one of the worst console ports I've ever seen. Expand

Rage seems to suffer from a lack of inspiration. The racing is OK, the minigames are fairly bland, and the exposition in the story is pretty terrible. The combat is fun enough, and it feels very tight, but it's repetitive. The whole game is just merely OK. There's nothing particularly new or exciting going on.

For your hub-and-spoke mission system, there are *TWO* hubs, really closer to 1.5. Despite the vague whiff of an open world, the missions and story are entirely linear. The characters are caricatures. The driving is passable, but busywork (along with the occasional fetch quest). There are no choices, nor roleplaying. Quake was more fun, lived up to its potential and recognized its strengths. Rage is a buggy mess with nothing to recommend it.

RAGE is trying to do too many things and none of them well really, except for the graphics which are amazing, but the world you play in is dead, and not because of the story dead in that all of the maps are completely static, all of the objects are stuck to the floor, no physics or objects being scattered after an explosion or anything to move around, you can't even jump ontop of objects below your waist. The entire world is off limits so to speak. You can basically move and look at things like a simulation but there's no real reason to explore, you may find a few hidden items like playing cards for the mini game or pieces used to build stuff but they're randomly placed and it's just not fun and that goes in to the map designs as well:

The maps are basically linear and you just go around shooting everythign until you loop back around to the end. There's very little variety in terms of enemy AI and placement, with the exception of the mutants but you can easily just walk over the invisible triggers in an area to make them jump out then run back in to a doorway to murder them all in a nice row, very not fun and annoying really.

The rest of the enemies are not fun either, they take way too many bullets to kill and the mutant characters don't even leave any loot to find, they just absorb bullets and return nothing which forces you to do other things that aren't fun like racing and playing card games or delivering mail to make extra money so you can trudge through the next mission fighting the same types of things in the same way.

To put rage in perspective HL2 came out in 2004 and offered the same type of post appo. world and did it right, the world while dead was completely alive, you broke things to open boxes, you solved puzzles to get around a map, enemies were varied and fun and the game has characters and story you give a **** about. As for the weapons, they're underpowered, all of them minus wing blade are worthless. the shotgun maybe not but it's only good close range and sometimes it doesn't kill the same two enemies with the same shot. Not sure whats the problem. Nothing is really that amazing you can change your ammo types but who cares, and you can hold up to 4 guns.

The game has some RPG elements which translates to wasting your time back tracking and pressing the activate key twice to listen to an NPC babble on until you get to the mission accept screen. It's tedious, especially when dealing with vendors, each time you need to listen to the idiot vendor tell you he buys and sells items, then you need to wait for him to finish talking before you can buy said items every single time you visit a vendor. It's absolutely retarded. The game really isn't all that inspiring, I'm about 1/4 of the way through the game and I could give a flying **** whether or not I ever beat this, I may just watch the endnig on youtube and call it a day. I kinda owe it to my wife to finish this turd because she bought it for me for christmas. Oh well, nice try ID but this could have been a linear shooter and it would have been much better.

Textures take time to load when you turn around. The plot is so insanely contrived its abysmal. The starting sequence is 'get out of pod, get attacked by previously invisible enemies, guy pulls you on a car after psychically knowing you were there and drives you home, doesn't offer you a drink or a rest.. puts a gun in your hand and says 'go kill' its insane and I think 10 year olds could write a more believable start to this game. Don't think you can hide around the corner or run along the path to make your enemies chasing you around like other sissy shooting games. The mutants will climb, crawl or jump right at your face; the Authorities with organize a squad and tactically attack you; and there are huge monsters will blast the hell out of whatever you are hiding behind. As a result you will find yourself in a tight situation where your eyes have to concentrate on every bullet, you mind has to think about every solution and your mouth has to cry **** **** **** while running like a little rat.

Graphically, the game looks great. RAGE comes with the newest idTech 5, and surely it doesn't disappoint us. The world looks very detailed and the characters are incredibly life-like. In terms of character animation, no game out there is better than RAGE at the moment. The animations are applied for every joint possible, as you can easily see the movement of the character's tongue when saying certain word, the curve of the finger when he press his hand against the table or the movement of the enemies when they are hit on their legs. All animations are extremely unique, like, when someone says "up town", he actually points his finger to the sky, make me wonder could be a real person is talking with me. Everything makes the world of RAGE beautiful and lively. There are some technical issues with RAGE, though, like texture popping or sometimes the game doesn't run at all. Update the game to the newest version as well as update your VGA driver will certainly help.

On the other hand, RAGE is still a FPS game with RPG elements so it may disappoint those fans of RPG shooters like Borderland and Fallout. The open world of RAGE doesn't really help much for exploring or doing side-quests. The Wasteland is rather like a lite version of Twisted Metal where you can drive from place to place and shoot other vehicles. There isn't an option for you to level up your skill and the story is pretty simple and plain, so if you are looking for a RPG shooter, look elsewhere. In a nutshell, RAGE is a game for true FPS hardcore players who are so bored with all "modern" FPS nowadays.

Facial maps of characters is top-quality, and the scenery through which you'll be trudging on missions is pure scenery gorn--the attention to detail by id Software to the decimated city you visit is mind-blowing, and a true reminder of Life After People. On the downside, when it does seem to be sandbox, it's not. And when it's not sandboxish, it's linear as the original The Houe of the Dead. But with the only sandbox game pulling off freedom and atmosphere being STALKER, a little guidance is welcomed for an absorbing experience, and even needed when you're going through areas with so much eye candy the makers of 2012 would be jealous. Configuration options are embarrassingly limited for a PC game. You're stuck with only 4 or 5 video options, and most of the useful console variables are locked (including mouse smoothing/ acceleration, the god awful head bobbing, and the massive amounts of bloom rape). The only useful variables left are fov adjustment (wtf, should be available in graphical config) and one that skips the intro videos.

The common complaints are the performance, lack of delivery for the promise of "open ended" gameplay, and numerous bugs.

For one thing, buy and play this game now. For one thing, it no longer lags and it looks absolutely stunning. There are no longer ANY performance issues, and the graphics look even better than Battlefield 3. Serious Sam 3, Saints Row The Third, and Skyrim are games that tote nice graphics or DX11 options, but run poorly or have uneven performance due to bad optimization... Battlefield 3 runs on high for me with great performance, however with my 6850 HD graphics card. But that's not the point, the point is that id listened to our complaints as PC gamers and they delivered fixes. Drivers have been released that have long fixed the performance problems. This is no longer an issue.

Open world games are overrated in my opinion. I don't get that sense of "scale" or "sandbox gameplay" that other gamers obsess over.. To me, I prefer games like Deus Ex Human Revolution, that OFFER multiple paths but are still linear with a clear goal in front of me. Sometimes, linear is better simply because it is comforting and offers a clear routine or path. There is nothing wrong with open ended gameplay, but id is masterful at creating corridor shooters, NOT open world games. Expecting Rage to be anything more is utter nonsense, regardless of what John Carmack promised. I think he only promised from HIS perspective of what "open ended" means... not OUR ridiculous standards as spoiled gamers these days.

The bugs are also mostly gone. People need to take back their poor reviews this instant, it doesn't deserve a score this low. To me, this game deserves at least a 8, or a 9. It's amazing, immersive, fun, and not one bit "boring" as anyone claims. This game being "boring" is just **** from spoiled gamers who expect far too much from gaming... it's time to finally relax, immerse yourself, and ENJOY this game, especially with the lower price.

However, if you want something truly open ended or "masterful", go obsess over Skyrim and don't go play underrated open ended games like Rage or Deus Ex Human Revolution. Don't get me wrong, Skyrim is a great game, but it's a perfect example of sloppy PC optimization... again. Even RAGE fixed these performance issues by now!!

Now, I'll take my leave, I hope you all take something from my review, and reconsider Rage for your game library!

My personal biggest issue with Rage, is that there just isn't enough in the shooting department to make it anywhere near a match for something like Crysis2. There were never any situations where I had a vast army of baddies to deal with, or large-scale environments where you had freedom of choice to manoeuver. It was kind of like - go down pretty tunnel, shoot bad guy then next bad guy, move further along. That being said, there were some really atmospheric and tense moments, and plenty of places where you felt you were getting AAA-action for your buck. The driving element added something to the game, but there wasn't really any open world to go an explore. Having the baddies respawn in the same places even after they had been killed, was a bit annoying. Would have been better if they had some AI like in Left for Dead where there random things would happen. Still, I am giving Rage a 7. Definitely it lost a point for the terrible final level-mission, a point for repetitiveness and lack of scope. The thing that bothers me more is the many buildings, locations and even doors in this game that just seem to be there, unused, not even for a simple sidequest. Instead of using all those spots they just filled the game up by sending you to the area's they did design twice, with just some small changes made. The worst is the ending, which is beyond rushed. The final level looks amazing, but it's short, repetitive and when it was all over left me with an unfulfilled feeling. The final battle and ending is one of the most disappointing in gaming history and I'm not exaggerating. Not just because it's easy (even on nightmare setting the game is a breeze), but also because it's just very anti-climactic.

That said, the game is still fun to play overall. It looks beautiful and the engine (when it works) is fast while everything looks great too. I do get the feeling they left things out to make it faster, like realistic gun lighting, flashlights, or any kind of dynamic light. It could be that the automatic video settings removed this for me, but I highly doubt that. The truly great thing about this game is the AI and the way enemies behave. They jump around, evade, duck, do flying kicks, hide, flank you, climb walls and ceilings, shoot around corners, advance, or retreat/regroup when losing, etc. It's definitely the best AI I've seen in a while. Too bad you play such an overpowered character, otherwise they'd be a real challenge.

In the end the worst this game does is give you the idea that there's more, when there isn't. But there still is a lot. Easily a few evenings of playing time if you're a bit of a completionist, which is more than some top titles offer.

P.S. A lot of people complain that it's a console port, which it definitely is. You should really be happy they still make PC games, ports or not. I rather have a port than no game at all, which seems to be the way things are heading for the over-pirated PC marked.

When the game first launched, I read about all those texture popping issues, and then there was issues with people with AMD GPUs not being able to play the game due to lack ( which IMO is caused by technonoobs that tried to max the game with a crappy HD5570 2GB ddr3) .

The former issue was OK and didn't hinder gameplay and was just annoying, mostly fixed with the 1st update, yet still occurs slightly in some areas, but the latter problem regarding AMD GPUs......Im a bit skeptical as I myself is a proud owner of a Radeon 6950 GPU and is currently playing the game at50fps++ with 8*MSAA.

Graphics are great, would look better if the colors are more intensive,
characters are ok, story ( so far) is meeting my expectations and gameplay elements are not bad, the only problem I have now is with it's annoying saving system that doesn't auto save or not allow you to save between 2 intervals in some areas/missions which is a bit annoying if you die.

I would not recommend any other sane person to buy this. John Carmack you failed me, maybe I will buy another game from your company if DOOM4 turns out well. Fail!

I don't even know what to say about this game to be honest, being a serious gamer, I expected big things from a game which had Bethesda involved in it even if it didn't create it. Well what is there to say? Other than it sucks big time, if you want buggy AI, an average storyline, bad controls and boring game play then by all means get this game. Rage was possibly one of the worst game launchs in recent memory. Driver issues, lack of PC graphic options, and bugs. Level design is excellent albeit a tad too linear with return visits to certain levels via side-quests. The enemies you face have better AI and are more diverse then the "Hey, let's re-skin the same mindless human model 20 times"--military shooter(s). The driving sections and racing are very arcade-ish, decent but can become repetitive also. Rage offers tons of customization, be it your car, or weapons, or items, you're given many creative ways to reign down death. Graphically the game is gorgeous, gripes about low-res textures aside, Rage is one of the best looking games around. Multiplayer is a car combat Twisted Metal style affair, which to be honest I only tried once, and didn't much care for. >< Rage wasn't the second coming of FPS that many had hoped but it's no way near as bad as some would like you to believe either. I'd recommend Rage to anyone with a decent PC now that the price has dropped. Expand

Terrible don't waste your time. This game should cost 10 dollars and no more. No story No goal nothing expect beautiful graphics. Carmack and his team have lost there touch. It seems developers just try to rush there products to meet share holders demands. This is terrible game to release the end is the worst one I have seen in ages.

    Pathetic attempt at entertainment.

Maybe it's a good game. But I'll never know, because it runs UNPLAYABLY badly on the PC port. I am hardly alone if you read the other user reviews. Consider yourself warned.

The game played fine for me on the PS3. A normal game nothing really outstanding but nothing really game breaking preventing me from playing the game. The only thing that prevents this from being a higher rated game is the length is far to short and you don't get to explore the world like Fallout which is given nods to in game.

I am a big fan of Bethesda, so this game was a bit of a disappointment. Instead of an open world, it is quite linear. It still is some fun, but not compared to other games out there. If you want to skip the driving, go with Fallout New Vagas. Want vehicles? Borderlands. Don't bother with this one.

The PC version is garbage, riddled with bugs, terrible porting causing shockingly low FPS and streaming textures at every direction. After some patches that should have already been implemented on release, the game runs fairly well. Even this doesn't make up for Rage's shortcomings that are suppose to make the game/engine a technological marvel described by some. There is no dynamic lighting and barely any physics(this world feels so static I could get an electric shock and die while playing). Games using the Unreal 3 engine have more polished and interesting features than this game. The animations on the enemies are swell and all, but has anyone looked at the animations for the friendly NPCs that hand out quests? Did they forget to animate the entire lower section of the rig? It feels like those old 70s robots you find at Disneyland that just move around the upper part of their body and the rest is stationary to hold them in place. LOOKS REDICULOUS FOR SOMETHING THAT TOOK 7 YEARS TO DEVELOP. The art is awesome, and that is the only reason this game gets a 4 from me. The rest barely holds up to current AAA standards. If this game was sold for 39.99 brand new, I would have a lot more forgiveness, but being released for a full 60 dollar price tag brings shame to id. This game is nothing new and I bet there is no way in hell that this fantastically crappy megatexture technology id developed will be used by anyone in the near future, it has proven to be an utter waste of time unless all you want is pretty screenshots to put in your portfolio. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I ran the game on my old Geforce 8800 in hi-res/high detail. I had a Graphic bug on the first day which was most annoying if I got hit by a bullet. But on the second day a patch installed fixing my problem. Ran the game with no problem since. The engineering was cool, but the need for items like the RC car was short lived. Would have made a better game if they were still needed further in the game to get to other areas, Zelda is a good reference for this. Side Quests like Zelda would have also been good in this game. Although you could do some exploring, the game was very linear. I felt the ending was rushed and came to soon, I was hoping for a third Wasteland (The City) were I would run into the Authority more. Hopefully this will come with the Blue Station Expansion. The biggest issue I had with the game was after the credits you didnt get to escape back into the wasteland. I want to play the card game again with all the cards I collected. Plus I became very addicted to Tombstone. Expand

I didn't buy this on release because i heard about the graphical problems which were occuring. I waited a few months and am glad i did. The game looks great on my GTX 570 (minus of few dodgy textures)and does not suffer from any screen tearing. I would sum up the game itself by saying its 'good fun', but not a classic by ID's standards. I feel like this game is abit of a missed opportunity for ID because the potential was there to really make something great. Rage is definately worth picking up now that it is reduced in price and has had most of its glitches ironed out. Expand

I was really looking forward to this game, only to have my hopes shattered. This caused extremely low resolution textures in some places and in others caused compression artifacts. The game itself offers nothing in terms of dynamic lighting, all the lighting is static, baked into the textures themselves. Have a look at QuakeCon 2007's demonstration of what there characters were going to look like vs. what they delivered in the latest game play vids and you will see a significant reduction in quality. Whats good about the Graphics? Excellent animations and a couple of wow moments when mega texture actually does pay of in terms of terrain detail. Overall though I'm disapointed, in many ways doom 3 and quake 4's graphics were better in some places, and those are 5-6 year old games. Gameplay is arcade shooter style with some racing elements, combined with crafting. Crafting in this game was not really necasary, but it is ok. Enemies were a little annoying as they seem to be so armored all the guns seem weak. I.e. the best 'machine gun' type weapon in the game which has a BFG round as it's alternate fire takes 50 bullets - 50! - to put down a normal humanoid soldier. Other than that the movement and shotgun is very satisfying. Sound in the game was good with the music being really cool in fights. Get it on a half price special if you're gonna get it. Expand

Had to register and post here because I know a smear campaign when I see one. So many ratings of "0" from people one user review total on this site. However, yes, the graphics were bugged on release. Carmac is quoted as saying that the wrong GPU drivers were available on release day and the whole situation was a "custer****". Sucks to be at the blunt end of that bureaucracy. I fixed mine on release day with a few easy .cfg tweaks but I don't expect everyone to be so patient. On the other hand I had a friend who got it who has a more updated PC that had no issues whatsoever. Since then id has patched the game and AFAIK everything is peachy now.

The game itself is amazing. Can't say how many "omfg this is incredible" moments I had throughout. This is really a work of interactive digital art. The design of the world is insanely cool. It's so fun. If I could say one bad thing about the game itself, the ending was depressing, mostly because the game was over and I wanted to play more. Took me about 14-15 hours and I think I did most of the side-missions. Time for Nightmare mode and co-op I guess!

Pros: Animations and character detail (so cool to shoot someone and watch their frame react realistically). Pace of game is nicely split between car combat and FPS shooting. Crafting is cool, easy and fun (can't say that about any other game). Voice acting is really good. Overall art design is the best I have ever seen. Graphics are just insanely beautiful and lovingly crafted- this is one of the most unique and gorgeous worlds I've ever seen in a game.

Cons: Ending was very disappointing, not just because it meant the game was over but because the final boss didn't feel like a final boss at all to me. There is something of a cliffhanger at the end though. I am eagerly awaiting the chance to gobble up any DLC they release.

I loved Rage through and through and highly recommend giving it a shot. 10/10 for being a beautiful, fun, original, and developer-beloved work of art.

When I bought Doom 3, I liked the darkness of the scenarios, because at the time, normal map and real time stencil shadows were interesting to look. But the gameplay, storyline and multiplayer... so I bought in the end, 50% of the final product, considering these, the system of light and textures. The game is disposable.

For a long time, I was surprised with RAGE, his images show a game visually compatible with the feeling that quake caused on me, look something new. It was a long download on Steam, where I bought the game. I confess that the texture cause less problems using a nvidia gpu, but the lag occurs. Was just the beginning of the frustration.
After thousands of interviews, the good and bad sides of the new engine second John Carmack, the PC as the best visual and the product selling as the best game ever made by id! I finally bought RAGE. I bought 70% of advertising.. yes, advertising is the real seller always. Because the final product is just half of the real deal. In 10 hours, all cards, itens and quests done.. minigames and races, please...
The best looking game! is just a pile of low res with more closed doors, than options.
    Again, the game is disposable.
I feel cheated, it was my last effort with at id software.

Carmack is a joke, releasing a game in AN old engine, go learn D3D, your game doesn't even support SLi properly. No updates are being done, what a joke, spent 50 dollars for nothing, won't be buying anything from iD software anymore.

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
