Perfect game for me, The really like shooter from id software. Graphic are really good, probably one of the best game this year. The sound is good too. I wait to see next game created with that engine.

I opened this account just to give this a big fat juicy zero...
it would have scored 3 based on content alone but it gets:
-1 for making me update both the game and the drivers twice just to be able to play it, -1 for happily taking my money for an unfinished product and
    -1 for a pathetic port.
    = 0

i really really have to stop pre-ordering games...

Totally don't agree there ! On my pc the game look very good (and i'm a video game artist). The engine is fast 60 fps everytime. The steam patch of this morning is the saviour !

Thanks ID ! The ghost town and authority cell are just Id style ! I'm loving it !

I'm really waitting for the HD texture pack ! This while bring 1 point more from 9 to 10 by my side.

Once the problems with tearing and textures are sorted out, Rage looks stunning to a degree I've not experienced in games before. Sure, some of the textures are that sharp but on the whole I didn't find them distracting. They're largely sharp where it matters. The environments are rich, with, for the most part, little repeat of objects making everything look fresh at each corner turn. Sure, some of the textures are that sharp but on the whole I didn't find them distracting. They're largely sharp where it matters. The environments are rich, with, for the most part, little repeat of objects making everything look fresh at each corner turn. The NPCs move well and die with satisfying drama and good animations. The shooting is solid and works well, with generally interesting environments, mixtures of cover and run and gun, and a nice heft and feel to the weapons. The problems, though, are many. The driving parts are weak, and while more fun that I expected, I wasn't expecting much. The 'RPG' elements are nothing of the sort. There is no variable character development , aside from choosing the armour at the start of the game. The plot is weak. At the end I was left with the feeling the last 2 or 3 missions were rushed to get the game out of the door. The last level and ending itself are most unsatisfying and a real let down. As a demo for a game engine it works well. I really hope Fallout 4, for instance, can make use of this engine to better effect. But as a stand along game by the end I was hurrying through to get it over with and, while the ride was fun for the most part the lack of depth, unmemorable characters and plotting and laziness on the part of id for the last 1/3 of the game make it little more than an average AAA title. Bad ugly and full of bugs console port. Optimization: 0, and no visual options.

A piece of worthless junk, for sure. It would be an insult to spend money on buying this.

I am amazed at this game, it is beautiful to look at, the sounds are epic, voice acting good and believable, though let down by a poor story and short campaign and the well reported graphic driver issues.
However i must have been the lucky one as ive had no graphical issues at all, the game has been smooth and without errors throughout.
Hopefully some DLC soon :) Graphics = 10

What i dislike on Rage is that linear feeling, i cannot go where i want, so i'm limited by accepted missions, where i'm allowed to go.I dont understand why it consumes 21 GB on my hdd. Second problem is, when i exite active mission, for example i went from sewers to waistland, i completed 2 of 3 objectives, killed all bandits, and later i went back to the sewers to finish 1 remaining. all bandits were alive again at the same position as before. Music is OK, but repetetive, looping from middle of the song. Weapons, shooting and sounds are awesome, moving is perfect. Enemies are retarded, sometims shooting to wrong directions, but the know trick jumping, they will surprise you at the moment you dont expect. Also their conversation is funny. Racing is OK, funny. Rage can entertain you for long time, if you do forgive developers and publishers for releasing unfinished game.

From me, 7/10. Will i buy any new PC game this year ? No. PC gaming is over. Rage is proof of it.

After spending a fair amount of time with configuration files and creating cache folders for RAGE I ended up with a game that runs more smoothly than any other I have had on my PC with a stunning visual style that deserves great praise to be heaped upon the art team at ID.

After spending a fair amount of time with configuration files and creating cache folders for RAGE I ended up with a game that runs more smoothly than any other I have had on my PC with a stunning visual style that deserves great praise to be heaped upon the art team at ID.
So, the textures are a bit blurry at times, especially close up. That's to be expected with a cross-platform title like this. It's the sheer amount of detail in every part of the environs and the staggering variety that lifts this game visually head and shoulders above anything seen before. No two areas a the same and I struggled to notice any repeat textures used in most games to cover large areas. The devil is certainly in the details here because the world comes to life on the screen.
This is all helped by some of the best sound quality I have ever heard. 5.1 surround sound is a minimum requirement in my humble opinion if you want to get the best from this game's solid audio. The voice acting is also of a very good quality, but possibly not the best I have heard.
The writing is okay, but nothing mind blowing. It tells a good story without too many frills.
The gameplay mechanics are solid and fun, which, at the end of the day, is what a game should be. The racing is frantic and visually breathtaking with the epic surroundings flying by at breakneck speeds and still making you feel in total control of your vehicle.
The A.I. Isn't the best but there is some variety, no-matter what some people say. The mutants basically run at you but the bandits leap about trying to get in close for a personal kill. Other enemies use the arsenal at their disposal to great effect and draw you out of a hiding spot with a well thrown grenade whilst others may well blow themselves to smithereens with a stupid fumble. Personally I think it's all part of the fun.
Yes, RAGE had some major technical problems on release but they were mainly driver issues and a distinct lack of graphical options, which has now been largely rectified by a patch.
There is so much bitterness on the Internet about the issues and some truly over the top reactions by people who really ought to get some anger management classes that I have to add that if you have patience, update the game (and perhaps use your own configuration files) and forget about this ridiculous "perfect game" expecationitis illness that many people seem to have you will have an absolute blast. It's also a rather sizeable game for a shooter which adds value for money compared to other 5 hour shooter.
RAGE is a solid shooter and fun racer all in one - once you get it running correctly.

It needs to be said that most of the 0 and 1 scores are from people who couldn't get it running properly. AMD, in particular, had some problems getting the correct driver out for this game. Once the issue has been fully resolved then it shouldn't factor into your buying decision.

Personally, I think it's id's best and most beautiful game so far.

Yes well totally dissapointing. Graphically yes it looks nice, in some instances but the physics, game play, story line, AI and overall feel of the game just misses by a mile.

Perhaps because it has the speed and simplicity I missed in fallout 3 and though it is a simple action game, still holds some RPG theme. I don't know. Each character is uniquely detailed with trinkets, tattoos and clothing that give them an original personae. The voice acting and mission briefings are clear and concise as to give the player a direction in the game. The key is talking to everybody. Side quests often open up new possibilities in the game and although Rage is a first-person shooter, the role playing elements add to the charm of this game.

But there's also no way around this fact: RAGE features the best gunplay in an FPS since FEAR, and if you skip it because of launch issues, you're cutting off your nose to spite your own face. With a modicum of know-how and Google searching, you can quickly correct the texture pop-in issue with a custom .cfg file and turn this game into a fantastic visual experience. Sure, there are some low-res textures - as there have been in every PC game outside of Witcher 2 - but the art design and overall graphics fidelity is something to behold once it's set up correctly with 8K textures forced and pop-in minimized. Just follow these steps (the top steps work for both Nvidia and AMD): http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/how-to-unlock-rages-high-resolution-textures-with-a-few-simple-tweaks

Now with that out of the way, I can confidently say that this is the first SP FPS I've played since FEAR where the gunplay is just amazing. The guns are all meaty with excellent feedback and feel. What also helps immensely is that the AI is surprisingly decent, making use of nooks and crannies in enclosed spaces to flank, crouch, duck, charge, and, yes, run away. That's a great detail - when you start taking fools out, there seems to be some morale trigger where the survivors try to retreat. Or they'll blindfire from out of cover instead of aiming properly. The Wingsticks at your disposal are also a beautiful addition to the combat, so you can shoot guys at some range properly without fumbling for a different weapon to switch to if one of them charges you. Both shotguns are awesome boomsticks, though I do love the alpha strike on the DLC dual-barreled shotty in particular.

And you know what? The RPG-lite elements id included here are about as well done as you can ask for had you tasked someone with creating RPG-lite elements in a shooter. The inventory makes a lot of sense and it's satisfying to pick up loot and drops from areas or corpses and then create your own gear on the fly.

Honestly, I hope the game sells well enough that id takes a sober look at what they accomplished and where they came up short, so they can start working on quality DLC and a sequel. For one thing, they need way more people - IIRC the team is just 60 staff. That's just not enough manpower for making a big game like this.

Then I got corrupted textures all over the place. Somewhat improved by tweaking the config files but never fully fixed.

Now I understand that this is probably caused by broken video card drivers more than by the game itself, and by the fact that this is virtually the only game that uses the newest OpenGL version, and that those issues will eventually be fixed, but knowingly releasing it in a virtually non-working state for the majority of ATi card users is just pathetic. Especially with id's reputation as one of the the leading technology companies.

What they cannot repair is outdated 90s game design which is executed very badly. This game is exact opposite of Daikatana where the technology failed to support the too strong design. Rage has too strong technology for so weak design that it cannot support the overall experience in a positive manner. And all that just leaves very bad after taste in mouth. Solution is firing Tim Willits (or moving him to be just a map designer which is what he does best) and hiring somebody who can not only design new kinds of games but also oppose John Carmack when there's a design decisions to be made. id Software, I am disappointed in you. The ending killed it for me. It was clearly supposed to be a 20-25 hour game but it got cut short.

Incredibly anti-climactic. Invisible walls everywhere to the point that it's almost like they don't want you to explore what I thought was supposed to be an open world. The shooting is fantastic, so are the enemies. It's the one thing they did right in the game and did very very well.

For 2 days now I nearly searched the whole internet and noticed, that there are tons of gamers having the same issues like me, and even more people having a lot of other issues, which make the game absolutely unplayable. I tried every workaround I could find on both, Windows and Linux, but nothing helped :/

I was a HUGE fan of id software and usually I'm ok with tinkering around for some games to work. But if there's absolutely no way of getting it to work fine, how can I give more than 0 points?

I'm sorry for this, but the people responsible for these issues need to get a slap.

Completely unplayable garbage. There is no reason why an ugly, outdated graphical game like this with zero physics should run so horribly on machines that eat Crysis, Witcher 2, Red Orchestra 2, Metro 2033, etc for breakfast -- all of which have twice as good of graphics as Rage. Carmack failed. ID Tech 5 is trash and is laughable at best.

    Was this game ever tested?

Graphics would be good, borderland style, if we could pay attention to backgrounds but it seriously hurt my eyes when i concentrate on something else that my own gun.
Im trying hard to find positive points to this game, but i finished 2 quests and im already bored since we are now used to better quality.
Im really disapointed that bethesda is involved in a game without choice making. I got used to games like Elder scrolls and Fallout and i was expecting something in the same category. All i received with Rage is an even more buggy game even if i experienced ctd and corrupted save games with these other titles.
I won't be hasty next time i see bethesda softworks as the publisher.

Although the game mechanics and AI was fun to play against, that's all there was to this game. The story made little connectivity, the ending was a joke, the megatexture issues, and 100's of doors that can't be opened. This is 2011, and after how many years? 5? in the making, this game contains an absolutely non-interactive environment. You can search the ground and pick up hundreds of little items just for them to become "Small Objects" that you don't need to sell if you don't want to, since you have unlimited cash by mid game anyways. Seems as though more man power was focused into the racing portion of the game, especially since the mechanics were so well tuned. Although it was distracting to try and race with textures resmoothing constantly, the vehicles worked really well. This game is for you if the last good racing game you played was "Death Race Rally," but other than that, this is not worth $60. This is not worht $50. This is not worth $40. $30 dollar cap, and it's too bad Bethesda has their name on this product, even as a producer, its embarrasing. People wanna holler about how far id Softworks has come, but they should've hung their hats with Quake.

I will say though that this game has AMAZING POTENTIAL!!! It seems like the game can be something in the future, with a HUGE DLC, possibly unlock 1 of the 300 unaccessible doors in the game? Textures still pop-in from time to time, unexplained graphical glitches are commonplace and the occasional crash-to-desktop from a loading screen still occur. Enough about that though, most of the negative reviews cover that well enough. The game itself is... decent. The actual shooting portion is engaging, though super easy - you are functionally immortal due to regenerating health AND on-demand medikits. Really?? Add in a cover system and you've got the trifecta. The enemies are pretty cool, and levels are a blast to play through.... the first time. Rage commits a cardinal sin in a game by padding content with maps you play though normally, then return and play through them again either reversed or with sections blocked off. It was unacceptable in Dragon Age 2, and it's unacceptable here. The racing/driving portions are fun enough but controls are odd if you don't play with a gamepad. All in all Rage could have been a much better game without the design shortcuts and if it had actual bug testing before launch. As it stands the game doesn't have enough content (roughly 15 hours if you do all sidequests and run every race) to warrant dropping $60. If you absolutely must play it, wait until the price drops to $20-$30 probably next month. I'm uninstalling as I write this. Expand

Maybe Dues Ex, but that had it's shortcoming, which drove me to look for the next game to fulfill my internal itch..or ID...ir whatever.. Ok, my psychological issues aside, here is my problems with the game. 1. Story line - What is the point of me being there. I've played for a few hours and I am just running missions with no real character need. 2. The open world is really a closed world. Visually it looks OK, but there are only a few paths to take. 3. Missions are super easy (on Difficult) and are to focused on the path the game wants to take me. I can't diverge it some other sector of the game if I wish to. Sure there are side missions, but they are completed quickly. Talking to the other characters in the game is boring and in today's market, games should provide a path to take the conversations. This is a one to one and start a mission. 4. The bosses look pretty cool but are easy and somewhat stationary. 5. Character enhancements and weapons. Just plain weak. In all this game should not be rated M. It is kids 8-14. And that is an insult for anyone over 8 years old. This game is simple in game play, story line and graphics. All technical issues aside, this is a very bad game, poor and outdated level design, a fake sand box which is in fact more linear than any "scripted game". Mega-texture is a joke, it replaces most modern geometry by low resolution and terribly compressed hand drawn textures. Everything looks fake from the gamedesign itself to the way it looks. Carmack can't hide it no more, he is an has been.

How could it all be so wrong? It's baffling that a game that has been in development under the aegis of one of PC gaming's most respected developers could be quite so awful to look at, remain quite so unoptimised for modern PC rigs. Forums are full of disappointed gamers spewing nerd-rage - and quite rightly so, in my opinion. We had a right to expect far, far better from id than what RAGE has actually delivered.

The biggest disappointment of the year, without a doubt. Godspeed the patches.

I watched all the trailers and the making of the game. What a let down. Graphics are nothing like they advertised. the trees and charactors in the game are piss poor ps2 graphics. This game constantly reminds me of some old jurassic park game for the pc from 1999. The charactor interaction pretends like you have options. you dont. I was expecting fallout style interactions. no there is no choices its all bs.

expect to go back to certain levels over again for a different mission. they use every "level" 2 times to make the already short game longer. nothing like beating a area and going right back to it for a nother mission. I game this game a fair chance. since it has no replay value it will never be played again.

Rage wastland is one of the best art in all FPS till now. the mixed setting between hardcore FPS and RPG is very good. Play feel like hardcore FPS, but has some RPG element, the RPG elements don't infuluence the shooting feeling, this game is still a fast moving & shooting FPS, I think Rage is a awesome for hardcore & old-school FPS gamer. The fallen of Duke Nukem Forever make me feel maybe this type FPS could be vanished, but the coming of Rage make me feel so happy, I bought rage during steam QuakeCon sale with DOOM & Quake pack, I feel this is a very worthy deal.

From Tuesday to today, (Thurs 10/06) I have spent over two hours reading forums, creating cache folders, writing config files, and changing steam launch options just so I could tolerate looking at this game. Finally, finally after all that toil I was able to play it and the texture pop-in was tolerable, still there but TOLERABLE. I still had issues with spastic, flickering npcs but I was able to work with it, but then something else started to happen. I was going about my merry way furthering the "story" along when I tried to zone or load into a new area. After 2 minutes of staring at a loading screen I alt-tabbed to find the came had crashed on me. I tried again and it was fine. Later the same thing happened, except it took 3 tries to load in an area I had actually been to before. Then came the horribleness of the BashTV segment. You see, before when the game crashed, it at least had the decency to save my game before crashing and burning, so that when I reloaded I was right where I left off. Not with BashTV, I had to redo the whole segment five flippin' times (5 - 10 minutes each time) before I successfully loaded out of that nightmare. Now I'm at another point in the game were I've tried to enter an area atleast a dozen times and as of this posting are still not able to enter, despite numerous attempted fixes (dropping resolution, windowed mode, no AA). This product has got to be the worse PC port I've ever played; New Vegas didn't give me this much trouble. It also doesn't help that all I hear from the developers is to make sure I have my drivers updated. I did it and it doesn't help. I think the worst part about this whole situation is that I kind of like the game that is underneath all of this manure; that's why I gave this a one instead of zero.

There's this one point early in the game where you're on the way to some radio tower, and you can go into this cave underneath a shack. The only thing in this cave is a hole in the ceiling and a bucket full of fecal matter. That is what I think of when I think of this port.

Once you iron out the problems with the game, it's an absolute blast, as I expected. The action is fast paced and over the top, the arsenal large, varied and unrestricted, and the controls smooth and responsive. A lot of it is pretty standard Id fare (though hugely polished and modernized), but the rest of it is incredibly solid too. The graphics are fine, they are not jaw dropping and are plagued with issues on a vast array of systems. When it works, it looks like a FPS released in 2011 should be expected to look. It's the horrible game, itself, that is the problem. There has been blurring of RPG and FPS for years, with massive success -- because, as it turns out, people actually like character development. You usually get a skill tree or two (ala Borderlands), stats and abilities you can delve deep or lightly into for character specificity (ala Fallout: NV), a more engrossing storyline (ala COD).. hell, even Space Marine, by all rights a terrible first person shooter (but enjoyable multi-player -- where it actually remembers to offer character customization) makes a better effort.

Rage, in a nutshell, is a corridor shooter with quests. Boring, boring, quests. The quests themselves don't even yield a faux version of customization or development.. so you do them, for the sake of doing them. A FPS where you have to check in with NPCs before and after you do things.. just... because.

The single player campaign is probably 16 hours, at best. Coming in light. But hey, they do you the courtesy of pre-installing DLC folders already.. Both Bethesda and Id can do much, much better. Wait for this game to go half-off bin at your seller before picking it up.

Surely this will be fixed in a patch, and another driver update, but for id to release a game with graphical issues after boasting about idTech 5 for so long, is an insult to the community that put them on the map. The graphics do look nice at times, but seem quite uneven. Outdoor settings can look fine. Rock cliffs and skies can look amazing, and then you can look at the ground close to you and see nothing more than a low resolution brown mass.

The game itself is OK, and while I'm not one to be looking for the next NEW feature in a FPS, there is nothing in Rage's game play that stands out. I feel as though I'm playing Borderlands with different graphics. Not that that's a bad thing. I quite liked Borderlands, and I look forward to Borderlands 2. I just didn't think that I would be playing it so soon.

The voice acting is great, I hope John Goodman makes appearances in more games. The weapons are great as well. Control is fine, though Tim Willits says that a gamepad is the way to play, mouse and keyboard work fine, even in the racing sections, which I suck at. (Unfortunately, I'll have to grind my way through some races in order to be able to get some "quests").

There is fun to be had with Rage, and though I've picked on the weaker points, I am enjoying the game. As far as the PC version is concerned though, the game needs to have the technical issues addressed ASAP

A pretty, fast and aggressive shooter, striving in vain to be something more. [December 2011, p.62]

Far from perfect Rage somehow is has fun post-apocalyptic action where the principles are set –fortunately – bit different than in other games of FPS genre. [Nov 2011]

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
