This game has some of the most impressive visuals I've ever seen in a game. I'm playing the PC version. Even up close the textures don't look that bad to me, I don't know if it's different on consoles. Even up close the textures don't look that bad to me, I don't know if it's different on consoles. But I've had my breath taken away more times in this game than any other I can remember, even Uncharted 3. So much of my play time I've spent just standing and drinking in the incredible visuals. It's hugely pleasurable just to look at the environments. Perhaps it's partly the use of megatextures, but it's also the incredible amount of work which has gone into modelling and designing the environments. There's so much detail, so much variation, it looks painstaking, the amount of unique geometry, and the unique texturing on every surface, it's overwhelming, the visuals are incredible, I love them. So much detail in every scene, more than I'm used to seeing in games. This game is a real achievement, I think the developers deserve recognition and accolades for the design and the technology of this game, it's amazing.

It's also the artistry of the designers. A lot of times I'm standing looking at a scene and what I'm looking at looks like a piece of concept art rather than in-game graphics. it's incredible. And I can turn around and see another equally impressive scene.

For the record, I had no real technical problems with this game on my PC with an Nvidia card, although I guess I bought it after a patch had been released. The only issue I had at first was screen tearing but that was fixed with a simple launch option added with Steam and now the game is perfect. Great framerate (Nvidia GTX 560.

As for gameplay, it's pretty fun, I very much enjoy the shootouts, particularly with bandits. The game is of course very derivative, there seem to have been so many post-apocalyptic RPG-esqe FPSes. The closest comparison for me is with Borderlands although of course there are many similarities with Fallout 3 (though maybe they started work on Rage before those games came out?). But it doesn't bother me really as I'm finding this game more fun and immersive than both of those games. I could do without the vehicle combat, and the racing, to me they're kind of superfluous, I don't find the vehicle combat that enjoyable, I prefer the FPS combat, but then at the same time there's nothing wrong with it and the racing is a bit fun I guess, just not so much as the FPS combat which is great. Also I would've liked to be able to use a first-person view in vehicles.

Anyway, for the graphics and design alone I give this game 9 out of 10, the developers should definitely be rewarded and encouraged as much as possible as this game is an incredible experience due to the amazing environments, the unique texturing and the time spent on the masses of unique level geometry, and the design and layout of the levels, and the artistic backgrounds. It's incredible-looking and great fun to play. Not a complete masterpiece but a damn good game, worth £30 to me.

So it's a good game, such a shame to see the backlash id software is getting from the internet communities. Seems like they just had a bunch of bad luck, hope the game still does well for them.

Installed the game and textures were corrupted. Installed recommended driver for my hd6850 and the newest patch, but that didn't change anything.
Furthermore there's no support from Id or Bethesda, so you have to read the official forums to get help from other players.
I have struggled for over a week to get this game working, but it either gives me graphical errors or just random crashes.

No graphics settings, except brightness. Many graphics problems due to this, I tried using the help forums but it made my save game un-usable so i just tried unsuccessfully to ignore the awful texture popping. This game seems big for awhile until you realize its all empty space except for the, say 3-5extra locations you can explore. tho the game seems to think its much bigger, it tells you to explore and find things, all you find are enemies and ammunition, so its a moot search. Worst ending to a game ive seen in a long time, incredibly un-satisfying, there isnt even a boss or challenging situation it just ENDS with a few waves of identical mild enemies. many of the quests you do seem pointless, especially in the last area. you complete some preliminary quests, which led me to believe there would be alot more, but then they just stop and you are told to go fight the final battle for reasons not clearly defined.

The story pacing rate is non-existent, there are no likable characters and the theme is just so bland and boring at best. I am using a RADEON 6850 with the high definition textures enable and RAGE simply looks brilliant . I have never seen graphics this good in an FPS and I am a proud owner of both the CRYSIS games. The action sequences in RAGE are very well paced and incredible fun. You have a variety of choices for dispatching enemies and a wide variety of enemies to dispatch. Playing through the shooting sections is some of the most fun I've ever had in the FPS genre.

The shooting sequences are so good and I wish there were more of them. Instead, RAGE attempts to have "characters" and "story" and "side-missions" - none of these things have any place in an ID game. Doom, Doom III, Quake - these are ID's most famous and ground breaking titles and they all follow the same formula: Ground breaking graphics, cool weapons and linear progression from level to level. I'm a big fan of games that let you explore and experiment, but it just doesn't fit with an ID game.

Loved the shooting sequences, was not impressed by anything in between - 8

Currently, the game plays well on my computer but, not great like I would have expected considering my system is well within specs.

However, my comments here don't concern graphical issues. I'm rating this game very low for an Id title mainly for two reasons: lack of content and lack of quality workmanship one might expect from an iconic company in PC-gaming. Rage is a game of diversion and slight of hand, mostly the game-maker's hand. I found Rage's storyline embarrassingly weak for an Id/Bethesda collaboration. There are perhaps a half-dozen quests which actually promote the story, the rest are a bunch of poorly laid out shopping trips for quest-giver's to earn their favor or your personal improvement via weapons or armor.

This lack of decent story-telling is then, not-so-cleverly masked with unremarkable side-missions, passable dune-buggy racing and uninteresting mini-games. Having completed the game twice now, once for the sake of seeing and doing as much as possible and once for some of the achievements I can honestly say that - I didn't rush through the game - and have seen all that I care to. Given my long and generally happy experiences with both Id and Bethesda's games, I can tell you that this is not a game to have high expectations for.

I won't spoil the ending for you except to say it's equally - unremarkable. The abrupt ending is, no doubt, a precursor to DLC invasion of our pocket-books. I'll be passing on that. I gave the game 2 out of 10 on the basis of the artwork alone. I would like to thank Id and Bethesda for their past PC games and wish them much success with their new development focus... on consoles... "where the numbers are"...

Buy Rage at your own peril.

I have been impressed with Rage. I admit I was a bit taken back by all the negativity. I have around 8 hours into playing. I have not experienced a single graphical issue or crash in the whole game. The only setting change I had to make was to force V-Sync on to eliminate the tearing (which is normal for nearly any game). This setting should have defaulted to enabled. Graphically, I have yet to see anything as nearly impressive. Props to John and the artists as id. I grew up playing all of id's games (well, since commander keen). Graphically, this game deserves easily a rating of 10+. Game play, the only issue I had was falling through the world once. Other than that, no glitches, no stuck enemies, etc. The AI in this game could be stronger. Most Enemies will only stay in a small zone and will not chase. Back up, get to a higher vantage point, then pick them off from a distance. Sometimes the AI did surprise me and really did pull some interesting moves. This is the first game that I have played that a friendly AI will push you out of the way so they can take cover. The interface for swapping out weapons and ammo was a bit confusing and needs a little work. A little color wouldn't be bad either. 8/10

Story, this could use some work. Story has never been an id strong point. I like a there to be a 'reason' behind the quests done. Something that make it flow together. Maybe a little more explanation and deeper dialog with the NPCs 6/10

I am not sure about replay value. Games like DeusEx or Dragon Age definitely have more replay value. Choose completely different paths in a game is a huge plus. I do wish the game had more of that. I am sure I will end up playing it through a couple times. Consoles have really had a negative affect on PC games. With no new consoles in the immediate future, I can only imagine that this will affect the PC game market even more. Hardware played on (2600K, 16gig, 580GTX 3gig, and SSD)

The game play feels really solid. I love all of the interesting weapons and ammo types. Yes, the weapon selection uses a console-ized interface, but like most all PC games I simply used the # keys/mouse scroll, so it didn't really matter. The sounds and voice acting are top notch with good crisp realistic sounds and excellent quality voice acting. The writing and story itself were less than perfect. Lots of details left unanswered and the characters although they are voiced well don't really get involved much so you have no reason to really care much about them. However, that being said I don't play FPS games looking for award winning stories. What RAGE should and does do well is Shoot! Lots of shooting, lots of fun weapons, AI that didn't feel completely retarded like most FPS games. The driving portion handles well even using a KB, although I opted to use a gamepad at times. The mini games also were really enjoyable. I played quite a bit of the card game. Overall this game is severely under-appreciated, but I am glad I waited because I totally enjoyed it. I bought it originally for PS3, and the first thing I noticed when emerging from the Ark and looking around the world was that it was beautiful. Unquestionably, a gorgeous looking gameworld, but when I then turned left to exit the gangway, I noticed something Instantly off-putting: The textures of many close-up walls and surfaces were dropping in about a half-second late, which just looked cheap. I played the game through the first mission and returned to the quest-giver (voiced, I beleive, by John Goodman) and noticed even more late texture dropping. After playing the first mission I could tell the game was something special, the physics, the feel of the gun, the enemy AI, all brilliant. But the texture issue was seriously souring my experience. So, I called up gamestation and asked them to put me a 360 copy aside. I went down, traded it in, came back and started afresh. Now the texture problem was barely noticeable. I only noticed it at all cos i was looking for it, but even then, its very rarely an issue. So I started playing through, and as some other reviews point out, the first hour or two are a little slow. This isn't such a bad thing though, since alot of it is tutorial and meant to break you in slowly, revealing some of the games mechanics ang light-RPG elements. When you do get into a scuffle though, the game comes alive with a vengeance. The weapons feel heavy and deadly and they sound and feel superb. You can tell this game was made by the godfathers of the FPS genre. When I got my hands on the 12 gauge shotgun a few missions in, I was in FPS heaven! The enemy AI is brilliantly unpredictable. Enemies will scale and vault scenery as they rush you, they'll retreat in fear as you waste their friends, they'll drop to the floor as bullets whizz over their heads, showing a real sense of self-preservation. They'll flank you from all sides given the opportunity and they never do the same thing twice. And it all looks brilliant. The graphics are easily the best of a game this size, rivalled only by the likes of Killzone 3 and Crysis 2, but in a very open-world environment. The facial animation of the NPCs, while not quite to the standards of LA Noire, are incredibly life-like and convincing. The character models look great, too, just like everything else in the gameworld. There's quite a lot of RPG style looting and purchasing of weapons and upgrades, making gadgets from schematics and such like. The vehicle sections, used for getting around the world between missions and for race events, are actually huge fun and work very well indeed. You can trick-out your vehicles with new turbos, tyres, spike-wheels and projectiles as well as a fresh coat of paint to add a little personality. Sadly, you can't sell your old vehicles when you get a new one, which is an oversight in my opinion. If you die, theres a defibilator which you can choose to shock you back to life via a cool QTE minigame, which will also shock and stun any enemies stood over you. I did find the side quests unimpressive though, revisiting old areas and battling similar enemies seemed rather uninspired. Besides that though, the game rocks. Hard. I find it shocking that anyone could award this game with anything less than a 9, as its looks and gameplay come together brilliantly. Those giving it 1s ands 0s on here seem to have been playing on PC from what I read, but I think they're still being a little harsh, as the gameplay itself is worthy of far more than that, even without the great-looks of the great-looking 360 version. Fallout/Borderlands fans should enjoy this game for the setting, and FPS fans will love the game for the SHOOTING! Almost everything in the game is handled really well. The story is functional, if not amazingly ingrossing, and the environments are all stunning. The gunplay is fiirst rate and the enemy AI devilishly clever. Ignore the naysayer reviewers, they're just trying to be controversial. It's by no means perfect but it is damned good. The minigames and sidequests, along with the story are the games weakest link, but they're not why you'll buy RAGE. You'll come to RAGE for the shooting and you won't leave disapointed. Expand

The story is boring and becomes a hurdle to overcome to be able to get to the shooter part of the game. The RPG elements are thin, bland and generally make you wish you had started up Fallout 3 instead. Throw in a racing part that seems only intended to show us their engine can do racing and this game seems to serve no other purpose but to show potential buyers what you can do with their engine.

Speaking of the engine. Megatextures might very well be the future. The environment looks pretty from far away. Up close however, it is as if we are back to gaming in 2003 where it's ok for the environment to be an indestructible green screen - and smallish objects are barely recognizable.

I forgot the sound. It might have been because my neighbors lawnmower sounds just like the hot rods. Yes it does.

Not quite sure why professional reviewers love this game. (Or say it's mediocre yet give it 90 points). My advice: Wait for the games that others will create with id Tech 5.

Giving the game a 0 or a 1 is harsh and ridiculous. This game is played by a bunch of grumpy PC gamers who think this is still the 90's. The game isn't perfect, and the game isn't the most exciting, but let me write a quick REAL review.

First of all, the game launched with what people thought were bugs. In fact, it shipped without true driver support. The game ran terrible and I wasn't even sure what was going on. After installing the 11.10 Preview drivers and receiving the second patch, the game was smooth as butter. It's too bad we don't get smooth as butter games the second it's released. Yeah I know, we all want to play the game at midnight, but it's usually not such a good idea. Unfortunately, it's commonplace for patches and driver issues and updates and yadda yadda. It's money, politics, management, planning, etc... No launch is perfect.

Finally when the game did work correctly, I could see the beauty. The game EXCELS in outdoor art and architecture. The settings look photorealistic from afar, but like many others say, textures appear blurry and pixelated up close. They were obviously designed that way, but the tradeoff is extremely apparent. A lot of objects look low res and there are practically no physics or interaction with the environment, it's static, but it sure looks pretty. The tone is rather dark, not much color or super impressive lighting, but it'll do.

The audio on the other hand was very amateur. I won't point fingers, but it sounds rushed. Vehicle engine sounds don't blend properly, music doesn't loop smoothly, stingers end abruptly, dialog is rather dry and boring. The gun sounds were decent, and some hit sounds were decent, but it seems very corny and oudated for a game in 2011. Very disappointed with the audio. It wasn't immersive at all.

The storytelling was also very bland. I didn't feel like I was working up towards this grand finale. I didn't feel like I had a purpose. I was just this dude killing **** to make people happy so we could fight those other dudes cause you know, they're bad and all... That's fine. But if you're going to pretend you're an open world game, I'd at least appreciate some more interesting missions, dialog, interaction, and storytelling. This is where the game fell absolutely FLAT.

The gameplay in general is fun. I play tons of FPS's. I love all of them. Sci-fi, military, open world, corridor shooters, you name, I'll generally play it and have a blast. I think this game delivers the fun factor. It's a bit different from the usual id and it features some really great driving. While I wish it was incorporated in the story a bit more interestingly, the driving and shooting was fun. Then you pop out of your car, do a mission classic FPS style (Plus some cool new guns) and then that's it. But it's very formulaic. You always know what to expect. The environments, while unique and beautiful, still lack substance for the gameplay. I really wish this wasn't so. But it's the truth. We get a little bit of this, a little bit of that. But what is this? Don't try and be an RPG if you're not. Borderlands did the RPG thing well, so did Fallout, this falls short of what could be an RPG and ends up more like an expanded basic FPS.

All in all, the game is worth trying if you like shooters. But I think so many people are "Extremely disappointed to the MAXXXXXX" is because we expect so much of id. If this was any other developer, people would be like, "Cool. Fun game. Bored of it. Whatever." But because it's id, as PC gamers, we feel let down. It's too bad, but we can only hope for something more spectacular on next generation consoles. Yeah, you heard me. CONSOLES. I don't like to say it either, but in this business you need to make money to survive, that means tailoring towards consoles. As someone who works in the entertainment industry, I know = / Would I say this is a great PC game? Meh, it's so-so. The ideas were there, the heart and the hard work was there, but the execution was poor. We end up with another shooter that ends abruptly leaving you saying, "Really? That's it?"

Let me start by prefacing this review with the following: 1) The overwhelming negative reviews on this game were on the day of the launch, which doesn't provide enough time to truly get immersed in any game. 2) Many people refer to issues they had with their graphics cards. Personally, I'm not foolish enough to believe that the PC market for games is nearly as standardized and bug-free as consoles because people have vast variances in their hardware and therefore, their drivers as well. People should understand that when a software developer (in this case id) comes out with an entirely new engine, there are bound to be issues at the launch.

As for the game itself here's what was done right:
    1) The voice acting was top notch.
    2) The variety in environments and their unique nature is astounding (literally no two places look alike).
    3) Combat is visceral and engaging. You must employ cover at times and there is no one way to win a battle.
4)The music in the game sets the tone beautifully with each area. Truly wish I could download it somewhere.
    5) The graphics, despite the complaining of others, are to put it lightly, stunning. Environments look extremely realistic. The outdoors comes to life in the wasteland. And all of this, without the most minor skip in processing. (I'm using an Nvidia GTS 360M w/ 1GB... That's right, I'm using a laptop and I have no issues, why others complained so hard is beyond me.)

Things they could have improved on:
    1) Boss fights could have used a little more effort. Now don't get me wrong, they were great and all, but I can only think of two actual, true boss fights in the game (Definition of boss fight: a specialized fight between a unique enemy and the player).
    2) Vehicle driving was fine for the most part, but I have an issue with any game that makes me steer with button presses rather than the more fluid motions of a mouse.

That being said, I believe the issues I had with the game are minor and didn't make the game more difficult or annoying to play, but simply that my preferences for games weren't maxed out in this title. Can't wait for downloadable content.

It's a shame that this will most likely be my last ever id/bethesda game that I buy (and I was so hoping for a Doom 4) as they seem to care very little about PC Gamers (and I just refuse to play an FPS on a console - sorry John Consolmac but you can kiss my @ss you sellout).

The quests were pretty much the same thing different area and you always ended the level where you started so you could hop right into your vehicle and speed off. No memorable moments just a lot of running around with your favorite gun tried to avoid mutants. No real engaging characters/relationships... which is really an expectation these days. I did not enjoy the racing aspect of the game, and being left handed, I had issues mapping some keys which killed some of the joy... Close-up, they are Snes looking, and from far out the landscapes looks photorealistic. The game play is repetitive. The controls are not made for PC. Forget Quake 1-2-3, Doom 1-2, Heretic and Hexen. Having grown up on Doom, Quake and their numerous sequels and expansions, I've come to know and love the id Software conventions, the stylistic flourishes and absolute purity of the gameplay experience you can always rely upon. id Software have broken some of the rules with Rage, with both positive and negative results.

Unfortunately, at least with the PC release, few people are discussing the game itself and are more interested in **** about the games technical problems at release, which are still in the process of being fully resolved as far as I am concerned - the patch that was hastily put together over the weekend has fixed some issues, but despite having 1gb of RAM on my Geforce 8800 GTS, the games textures are sub-par and I cannot seem to override this. I know the game should look better than this, and unless I am expected to have a state of the art card or an SLI set up, I'm not sure why things are so blurry. But this brings me to my next point, which is the gameplay, and moreover, the pace of the gameplay and combat especially - things move fast, really fast. Enemies dart around, dodge and interact seamlessly with the many intricate details of the environment (more than the player can, I might add), genuinely fleshing out their presence and keeping you on your toes. The weapons are satisfying enough, and my favourite is the tried and tested id Software brand shotgun - the best damn weapon in any real game of note since 1993. The alternative ammunition types add yet more variety to the experience, and show that id Software have been paying attention to the other games in the last several years since Doom 3 in 2005... maybe a little too much attention, some might argue. First impressions of the game environment will inevitably conjure up (very fond) memories of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, only the visual fidelity (textures notwithstanding) is ramped up to the nth degree. Rage is a painterly game, with the id Tech 5 engine allowing the game's artists to literally paint their way through the game's design. Some of the most striking moments happen in the Dead City area early on in the game, with the ruins of urban environments, shanty towns, hospitals and subways really becoming incredibly vibrant and threatening. The stranger additions, more reminiscent of Doom 3, are bizarre and revolting and unfortunately, not exactly explained in any way. Leading into the plot...

The games story is threadbare, which is unfortunately another id Software standard feature it seems. Normally however it doesn't make much of a difference to the experience with their games, and this is almost true of Rage, but id Software have made a game that is banking itself on it's modernity, it's expansive open world, and it's range of characters you can interact with. All of these elements are more superficial, especially in comparison with games such as Fallout 3/New Vegas or Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but in a sense, this is where id have got things right - what we want from them is a shooter, a total blast and a lot of thrills - not a realistic shooter with hours of preparatory exposition, legwork and wandering around in a state of confusion, which is not to say Fallout isn't spectacular, it's just a different kind of game altogether. The similarities are aesthetic alone. Unfortunately however, Rage's plot IS underdeveloped and ends all too abruptly, which is a common problem in modern games, it would seem (Deus Ex: Human Revolution is guilty of this, as is Crysis 2, and if I'm mentioning Crytek games, I'm going to mention Far Cry, as irrelevant as it may seem now - Far Cry (PC) had the worst ending to a game I have ever seen, and Crytek should be embarrassed still by it). I enjoyed the game thoroughly up to this point and hammered through it in pretty good time, but all in all was left feeling that there should have been more, and what I wanted more of was the FPS combat that Rage excels in. The driving component of the game is daring and satisfying, but nowhere near as interesting to me personally as exploring environments on foot, really taking in the details and the artistry of id's legendary design. The race sections of the game are fun though, as is the whole game, and the pacing of every element of the game never skips a beat. But unfortunately the game skips along at such a pace it eventually hits a brick wall and ends pretty suddenly. I'm looking forward to some meaty DLC, and particularly some imaginative mods that make use of the new technology (and how long until someone brings back REAL deathmatch to this game?) to really make this game something unique.

I've been a Carmack fan since my dad brought me a copy of the freaky new game called Doom at the ripe age of 6, but it is obvious that fame has crated more ego than talent in the past few years. Doom 3 was a technical nightmare on all systems; buggy on the pc, edited on the xbox, and bland save for the wonderful sound pack created by Musical Genius Trent Reznor, so I can't seem to understand why this got so much hype. It runs well on my ATI HD 6770, but makes me wish that I had stuck with an NVidia. It has a decent storyline, but I feel like I've played this game before. Several times. And not in an "Oh my God I've spent how much time on this Oblivion Character?" kind of way. The graphics run very smooth(now), but if you look in the corners all you see is black. And last but not least, Carmack is a stuck up a$$wipe with no shame for releasing a game that wouldn't work for most PC gamers who bought it regardless of the requirements on the box, and his comments towards pc gaming in general show that he has no respect for the audience of gamers who made id the company so powerful it could crank out a game like this with issues like this and still make a killing. I will play Rage through to the end, and I will most likely enjoy what I've started, but if Carmack doesn't want to make games for PC gamers and wants to call us a dying niche, than I formally withdraw my patronage to anything that id puts out in the future. The textures also have great big seams everywhere, including on characters - so besides being able to see perfectly well how everything is made out of polygon edges, you can also see perfectly well how badly glued together the blurry textures are on everything, even the faces of characters. No apologies, just Carmack saying update your drivers and blaming ATI and Nvidia (I for one have had no problems with nVidia or ATI, although I know some people do). An apology for this disaster would have went a long ways for me. But all we got was a lot of double talk. The game itself is a lot of smoke and mirrors...it's just a corridor shooter in masked (and not so masked) corridors. The story ends without so much as a boss fight, just ends. Everything they put in there to make it a "deeper" experience actually just makes it that much more apparent as to how shallow it is. No longer a fan of iD, and I am ok with that. I can play Stalker, Witcher 2, Batman AA, Portal 2, Crysis 2, Hard Reset, any Half Life, Amnesia, Capsized...just anything really, besides iD's buggy, rushed, shallow products. I mean, Half Life 2 had solid shooting, superb atmosphere, interesting enemies, no rpg elements, no upgrading etc, but awesome characters you care about, and a story that's not too overbearing but done just right. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game could have been a lot better. The combat parts are enjoyable with some beautifully crafted mission areas. I just finished my first play through on hard and I feel the game is slightly let down though by the strength of the shotgun in the tight corridor areas, which number about 90% of the total mission spaces. You are pretty much golden once you get it. Graphically, as others have said there is an issue when you turn around and the textures are redrawn in detail about half a second too late. The textures themselves are poor when close up, but as you exit the games first room the vista is quite amazing. The brown-ness of the landscape does get a bit boring, as does the first few hours of the game without much story at all other than helping out some guys by being a one man army. The story in general is really bad quality, none of the cast have any appeal or character and there really is no final boss fight to speak of which is just a massive anticlimax, and reeks of a rush job considering some of the early boss fights. All the jobs actually have a decline button, the purpose of which, considering the alternative to doing the quest is doing nothing at all, would seem to be completely superfluous.

The racing side is enjoyable, the cars handle well and the combat/guns are OK, pretty much targeting on their own. The one down side is some later stages of the rally pick-up-point battles where you race towards spawning lights. The lights spawn in a cycle which really makes no sense and rewards (if you are in front) the people behind you, making it often better, although less fun, to just camp one set of points whilst the other three cars collect the remaining lights.

The combination of action/shooting and driving reminded me a lot of GTA 4. Rage really could have done with little things like cut scenes when introducing jobs, rather than taking inspiration from World of Warcraft. Running into the mayorâ

OMG what an unbelievably dull game. Lifeless characters, repetitive, boring quests, and a stupid, unfinished story. The writers probably fell asleep somewhere in the middle of the story. But I guess I should've known that id is not capable of that. And guess what, even the weapons and the fighting are kinda dull. Very dissapointing...

Upgraded in preparation for what i thought was going to be one of the best games of 2011.
Gameplay starts fun but when the boredom sets in you get to wishing that Rage at least had good graphics going for it ... and unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case.
I'm giving Doom 4 a skip as i don't trust ID Software to produce quality.

So far the gameplay is ok...nothing great really. What I did like alot was the sound and the music. Well done there. The scenic vistas are good as well but the constant low res textures are Daikatanaish and annoying. This feels too much like a bad port and even with the patch to include new graphics options isnt really worth getting to be honest. You get textures rendered in great detail and thats about all to it. I had a feeling the outside world of wasteland to be very isolated, there is no open horizon, you are always driving inside a huge ramp. Even the otherwise beautiful view of dark clouds and mountains in the horizon is too static and does not add any liveness to it. The game play: i have started on normal difficulty level but soon switched to nightmare and still felt lack of challenge. Only the very last vehicle battles near the nexus and the nexus itself was a bit more "nightmarish", but not so hard you would expect anyways. Oh and the ending, the ending is plain horrible! I can only assume they made yet another mistake and simply forgot to put it in! That sums up (the absense of) the story. The shooting ... i found the shotgun to be well suitable in almost any situation, given its 3 all very usefull ammo modes. Just sprint to the enemies and pound them, same goes for the big guys in thick armor and miniguns. And that's at nightmare. Too easy! The only case you would really need another gun is to take out some distant and otherwise unreachable targets with a sniper rifle. So, in the end you get a supposedly very advanced id tech 5 engine, but, it seems, id has not taken much care to build a game on top of it! Expand

How can you ATI users review a game and give it a 0 when you haven't even played it yet?! The gunplay is top notch. Weapons are interesting but familiar, but the ammo additions are pretty neat. You also get some secondary weapons that are really cool like EMP grenades, wingsticks (which are like a boomerang but decapitates, sentry bots, and turrets. The racing was a lot of fun and typically I hate racing games - but in Rage it took me back to the early Blizzard days of Rock 'n Roll Racing. I'll def continue to race in the multiplayer. The story isn't as deep as say Fallout 3, but then again this is not an RPG. Rage is a shooter. It's not supposed to have a deep story to satisfy roleplayers. However, I didn't see anyone giving COD4 a 0 cause it has a generic story. Basically this game is getting a bad wrap because of the ATI driver issue, which is in no way id's fault. Nvidia users are playing the game just fine and many of us are enjoying it very much so. If you are an Nvidia user I highly recommend you try the game. Give it a fair shake cause it really does rock. Just keep in mind it is a shooter at heart, not an RPG. For you ATI users out there, I recommend you go buy an Nvidia card first and foremost so you can stop blaming the game devs for ATI's inability to develop decent drivers. Then I recommend you try actually playing Rage before you review the game. Expand

Honestly, most reviewers fail to mention the main draw to Rage: ATTENTION TO DETAIL FOR THE THINGS THAT COUNT. Sound, Models, Animation, and Environments are all incredibly detailed and well done. Yes, the interface in some of the mini-game dialogs was obviously designed for consoles and they didn't add in good mouse support. The voice acting is good, even if the dialog is plain / predictable like the story. I guess they could have gone the extra mile and hired a better writer for the dialog and main story, but I'm only marking off a little for the weaker points. I've been a PC gamer since 1994; I don't understand all the PC Gamer hate. I guess they feel abandoned by one of the last great PC game makers.

RAGE is your standard issue FPS game with slight RPG elements to it. And in RAGE, slight means practically non-existent. Your choices don't impact on anything, they're if anything just flavour choices and barely alter the game and its story in any way at all. It's not immersive, it's not compelling, it just has elements that force you to spend time doing menial things like racing, yes racing. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the title of this game is RAGE not RACE. Admittedly the racing plays only a small part in the game, but on the keyboard and mouse the controls are just horrible so I'd rather not even compete at all, but I'm forced to on several occasions. The whole game suffers from a horrible case of Consolitis, and it shows in almost every possible way. After playing for several hours, it became blatantly apparent that I had to ramp up the difficulty setting. Not a lot changed, enemies still got gibbed after one headshot (which isn't hard because they almost certainly stand completely still). Fights almost always only happen in a frontal cone, allowing for barely any movement and just to run and gun. Five hours in and I've never had to turn more than 30 degrees left or right during a mission to shoot enemies. They made the game like this so that the console players wouldn't stress having to flick around left and right. The Z-axis almost doesn't exist either, there are hardly any variations in vertical combat so it means that everything is either directly in front of you or slightly to your left or right. The AI is, for lack of a better word, stupid. They sit behind cover, only to expose their entire upper torso and skull to be easily shot. Technically this game falls short on so many areas, the FoV feels wrong if you modify it at all. From my understanding 80 is the default, so I guess it gets a bit of praise for that considering most console shooters lock you under 65. I play most FPS games on 110, but RAGE... I can't take it above 90 without getting huge graphical issues. The textures load at the edge of screen extremely slowly when spinning around quickly, you can see them rendering as you flick left to right. Again, I'm forced to modify game files outside of the game in order to increase/tweak the graphical settings. Did you simply forget to put these options in the game, ID and Bethesda? Or could you not be bothered? Rage is another example of what gaming has become. We're accepting our games as they are, poor console ports with no features. The only reason I give this game a single point is the fact that ID and Bethesda opted to leave the Developer Console in the game. Expand

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
