Super Mario Sonic world?
PolyRoll at a glace looks like a Sonic knockoff, but its much more than that,
This 2d platformer feels like a mix of both sonic and super Mario bros,
Its essentially Mario in a sonic world, you have control over the platforming rather than running and sliding all over the place, though at the same time you have the exploration opportunities and picks ups youd expect in an old school sonic game, creating a nice balance of the 2 heavy hitters of the past.
PolyRoll is a very compact game though, taking about 4 hours to complete boasting its 35 levels and 11 worlds, but included in that number are bonus levels unlocked by collecting 3 gems in each level
Levels here are again more designed in the tune of sonic the hedgehog than Mario bros, don to the mechanics, just minus the speed.
Though there are no checkpoints here.. you have to get through each level from start to finish, gathering gems rather than rings to fill up your life gauge and picking up buffs to give you an advantage over the levels enemies and obstacles,
The only take the game takes it easy on you is when it comes to the boss battles, theres a door at the end of each level to take you to that world boss.. this is the only place you will find a checkpoint, if you die you start at the beginning of the boss, and thankfully not at the start of the entire level…
Boss battles here are the highlight of polyroll for me.. theyre challenging and varied in all the right ways, battles rarely if ever feel cheap, its just you trying to outsmart the boss, try after try after try
I do feel that polyrolls levels are a bit bland, and leave you with nothing really to remeber
but overall polyroll is a great nostalgic 3d platformer that fans of platforming in general should give a chance.
I give Polyroll
a 7.5/10… Expand
