Game has Implemented a micro-transaction system similar to CS:GO EXCEPT the Weapon Skins actually modify the stats of the game. This change is recent and changes all my past stipulations about this game. There are over $150 worth of DLC. Don't Buy.

Up until Oct. 15, 2015, this was my favorite co-op multiplayer experience of all time. I have enthusiastically recommended this game countless times to friendsUp until Oct. 15, 2015, this was my favorite co-op multiplayer experience of all time. I have purchased all but the latest DLC, much at full price and including packs of weapons I have never used, in support of the developers and the product that has brought me more hours of enjoyment than any item in my library. I have enthusiastically recommended this game countless times to friends and acquaintances, inspiring more than a few purchases. In my professional career, I have pointed to the lack of microtransaction content as a functional business model that respects its audience while providing a constant stream of new gameplay options.

As of Oct. 15, 2015, I can no longer recommend Payday 2. In the weeks leading up to that date, the developers of the game hosted a series of challenges that, when completed, would unlock new updates that would be free to all owners of the product. On that date, the first of a ten day "Crimefest", the feature revealed to have been unlocked was... microtransactions.

After completing a mission in the game, the player has always been awarded with a virtual card that is flipped over to reveal a new modification for a weapon, a cosmetic mask, and other unlocks. With the new "free" update, this reward can be replaced with a "safe" object. The safe contains a weapon skin of varying rarity as well as the possibility of unique weapon modifications. Very rarely, these weapon skins can add a statistics boost to the weapon when applied. These safes can be opened with a special "drill" object. The catch is the drill can ONLY be obtained by payment of $2.50 (and up) on the Steam Marketplace. There is NO method of opening a safe outside of this financial transaction.

As a long time supporter, this is a betrayal too harsh to bear. The game has been uninstalled and I will not be playing, purchasing, or recommending products by OVERKILL or Starbreeze Studios from this date forward. They have lost this once loyal customer and many others with the addition of this "feature".

    TL;DR - Pay-for product contains microtransactions for potentially non-cosmetic rewards - 0/10

Now this is only one instance to display the disregard for promises and statements made by their own development crew in OFFICIAL statements. Along with the disappearance of a quarter of a million in prizes for last years paydaycon which the community still has no clue where it went. I loved payday and on release despite the heists lacked the same intense driven feel as the original I still loved payday 2 but after a while not only did the quality of updates in general go down but the avalanche of DLC content was carrying the same level of disappointing effort and no real quality to justify their price point. All in all as the game stands and the continued disregard for player input in favor of a more profit driven dlc fest has created a sadly broken game. Expand

Since then, I have played nearly 200 hours and do not at all regret it. However the dev obviously only cares about money, so I will no longer be playing. The new update completely messed up any sort of balance there was before (weak pistol+skin now better than most powerful rifle). I just hope the mods will one day come to their senses and kill PD:GO.

To make things clear, the game is still very good, but the directions that it has been taking lately is unacceptable. Overkill now treats it as a money printer, and it is time for the community to step up and say enough. These skins aren't even like CS:GO, they massively effect gun usability.

TL;DR: Game is now trash. TF;GO, but much worse. No balance. Dev is a money-grubbing dick.

No, Overkill, I do not want to buy keys to unlock your RNG drops that give my weapons better stats in your first person shooter.

    Seriously, what were you thinking?

I stuck by you through the Disappointment Bat.

I kept supporting your game even after our ultimate free reward was a playable John Wick that you'd have given us anyhow.

I waited almost a year for your FBI files (I never understood why you didn't use L4D2's Valve stats like you did for the first Payday) which turned out to be little more than storyline fluff and blatantly ripping off a fan-made site.

I was patiently waiting for the Infamy 2.0 revision that was promised days after you rolled out Infamy 2.0.

I was all set to wait and see if you managed to salvage this new "weapon balance" that you pushed without any real testing or knowledge of the metagame.

But now? I just played the new free heist. It would be marginally more fun than the Armored Transport heists if it weren't a BLATANT advertisement for your new crate system full of microtransactions that YOU PROMISED would never be in the game.

I loved the first Payday. I loved this Payday. I was so happy to have Almir respond to a post I made on the Steam forums just hours after I bought this installment of the franchise. I believed fervently that this was a developer that cared about its community. I convinced so many of my friends to buy it and try it out. I bought gift copies for the holdouts. I bought DLCs at full price even if they didn't wow me because I wanted to support you guys and watch you make the best game you could.

Now I'm watching you trample all over your community for the quick buck. You've made us swallow **** one too many times, Overkill, and I simply can't recommend this game to my friends or anyone else the way I used to.

Just added microtransactions in the form of skins that give stat bonuses. Also, they completely destroyed the balance of the game with a back-to-back weapons 'rebalance.' Have 1400+ hours sunk into the game and played it every day and this alone made me stop playing. They need to seriously fix this.

I really like this game, but i can't support a game that uses game play altering micro-transactions in a game I've already paid to play (and I won't play a free to play game with a pay to win structure either).

I don't mind throwing money at DLC either (and I have, alot), but the new skins are a bridge too far. I'd happily remove this review if this aspect of the game is scrapped. I

I like this game, have formerly suggested it to alot of friends, but I can't anymore because doing so just supports these types of greedy tactics by publishers and developers. Overkill did a good job creating an active community, and right now, that is blowing up in their face because of their greedy decisions.

It's sad really. Over the course of a single day Payday 2 turned into a hollow shell of the game it once was. I used to love playing this game every day and now I can't even look at the desktop icon I have for it. I'm really hoping I will be able to change my review if Overkill decides to do some thing, but for now, this is just a P2W ridden buggy shooter. Spend your money elsewhere.

**DO NOT BUY A GAME FROM THESE GUYS**

Been playing almost since it was released.
Over 3400 hours in game. Yes, I said 3400.

    The designers (Overkill Productions):
-Actually, literally, on Twitter, told this gaming community that we should stop complaining about game changes that were made (in relation to "stealth") because "We were playing the game wrong". I'm not joking. Game designer Goldfarb actually tweeted that. Apparently, after you pay your hard-earned money for this game, you can be in the wrong in how you play it. Who knew?
-Do not fix long-standing bugs/errors such as non-stop AI wall-clips, all AI's shoot through walls/floors/ceiling without attempting to navigate to targets through map, AI's with improper sequencing logic (friendly AI's ignore obvious, immediate threats in favor of lesser actions)
-Treat this game like a long-standing Beta
-Think nothing of dumping untested code and then letting the community report errors that should have been caught before release (EX. earlier this year, a release was issued that, once installed, caused hard-crash to desk-top any time you tried to reload a shotgun).
-Promised, in a public posting, that there would never be micro-transactions/pay to win,..and here they are!
-Add things with no actual benefit to game play (trailer movies, FBI files, masks, colors, patterns), and call them gifts to the players. They just do not seem to understand that we play this game for the maps. That's all we want. More maps. But they go and spend our money making pretty trailers.....and sticking them on our hard-drives! If you have limited HD space, forget about it. Current game size is listed as 25GB, 20 of which are the trailer videos. You can't delete them. You can't access them from your game menu (and that should have been an easy thing to include in the menu, especially if you're sucking up my harddrive space!)
-Submitted to the whining of fan-boys and their own greed, adding rocket-launchers, grenade launchers, flame throwers to game----EXCESSIVELY OP!! Ruins the game, makes it into a cartoon, totally in contrast to it's original feel.
-Created a "Dodge" class, where the more you run around (without armor) the less you're shot. Again, this is like a cartoon, and so many players are bad at it, that the game gets dragged down trying to save them from their own mistakes. Terrible.
-After promising no micro-transactions, here they are!
-In support of micro-transactions, they nerfed all the weapons. Now, to get back the capabilities of the guns you previous purchased thru DLC, you have to pay to buy their skins. No way to get these in-game. Greedy and not what is wanted in a game that cost so much. Over a dozen $6 DLCs plus original game cost. Once I buy a game, I don't want Freemium spending.
-Actually, literally BEGGED the community back in January 2015 for $20 each to help "support them while they created the next free map". Yes. Said that right. $20 each so they could give us a free map. W.T.F?
-At the request of COD fanboys, continue to add ridiculous obstacles (cloakers, turrets, super-cop Winters) that don't work right, don't work well, don't mesh with game flow, are installed in a lazy manner. It's like somebody said "try to kill me more" and they listen. Just balance the damn game, and leave it at that!
-Supercop Winters only spawns at front edge of map. Doesn't move around. Just stands there. No imagination, no effort put into possible movement of phalanx to other locations on map. Just enough to get them onto map at the front. A ten-year old could have written that code before lunchtime.
-Cloaker code has never worked right. "Warning sound" that is supposed to get louder and louder as you near a cloaker is only heard AFTER they knock you down. Cloaker stats are ridiculous. Half-dozen shots to head with a heavy gun and they don't even stagger once their attack is initiated.
-Turrets don't move. Uninspired. Just bullet funnels that show up and hose you down. Would have been much more in spirit of the game if they were part of an escape scene, not the primary heist. All it takes to disable is enough damage. Not a serious threat to anybody with common sense to duck. This is a crime game, not COD. Just a dumb addition.
-Guards taken hostage at gunpoint are not coded to answer their radio call, saving a "pager reply" from the max allowable of four. Sorry, but if you get a guard in cuffs while holding a shotgun to his head, there has to be at least a 50-50 chance he'll co-operate and answer his call in a way that helps the heisters and not sound the alarm.
-Grenades----oh, let's not forget the wonderful coding error here: one out of every three grenades is shot out of your hand by the cops. 1 out of 3.
-Detection code errors. Player with detection range of 3m spotted at 30 when there is a verticle separation from the opponent during stealth. DECIMAL POINT ERROR NEVER FIXED!!

The game itself is great. The giant cash wall to start playing it is not. You want grenades? Oh you'll have to buy DLC. You want that silencer for your build? DLC! You want a sniper rifle? DLC! Welp, here we go, the CRIMEFEST. For those, who are not familiar, this is THE big thing. Ten days of constant updates, new expansions and content and all that for free. The community has to do some work to get there though and solve some challenges to unlock the rewards. Sounds fun right? Well it was until they released the update and revealed their big surprise for day one: microtransactions... yeah and some unbalancing changes about the weapon system.
This was the point where all the little things I've been disappointed in before came into my mind again, this was the point where I could no longer talk myself into ignoring those truly disappointing things: PAYDAY 2 is a game made of DLC and more DLC. This started a while ago and somehow I got myself to ignore the annoyingly enormous flood of "Downloadable content" which somehowpresented guns better than the stock ingame weapons. Just like I told myself to ignore the constantly collapsing servers, which made the game unplayable (not kidding) on free weekends. Just like I've got myself to ignore the bad cheater-check system and the net coding bugs.

I endured all this. I paid for all those DLCs. I completed all those "hype" challenges. And I got so **** excited... for THIS? Not only is this the "big update event with all the good stuff", no it's the part where OVERKILL promised us big changes, amazing content and all this for free! Well, thanks, now I can spend more money on cosmetics.. for free!! The funny thing is: OVERKILL stated several times, that there will never be microtransactions. They just straight up lied to their community, thanks for that. It started with the DLC **** this is what it became now, what's to come? Monthly pay so i can still play payday? This is how you treat your "beloved fans"? I have rarely been so disappointed in a developer and I've played Watch Dogs... believe me, I know my bad games.

Seriously, I hoped this day would never come, but here it is: **** you Overkill! Seriously, nothing but a **** you!" from me. I wont even be able to play anyways during this "hype event" since your **** servers are flooded with free players, so they crash every 5 seconds. PAYDAY 2 was one of the most amatzing games for me when I bought it, but with every DLC, with every little "update" and with every "balance change" it turned into a bigger pile of crap. Thank you for ruining a game that I already paid for. Just to put this in perspective: by making "safes" (the microtransaction thing, like crates in TF2 or cases in CS:GO) an obligatory loot drop you are not only pissing me off, but for me, a person who will not buy any of your keys, or drills or however the hell you want to call them, you remove about 10% of my loot drops, since I cant decide whether I want to have that **** thing or not. So instead of adding anything, you just removed something. THIS is my update? Thanks a whole bunch.

Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy this game. It looks fun and when it works it sometimes is, but most of the time its either connections or net code or DLC flooding / hackers / some other bullcrap that just ruins it. I am seriously pissed off, so sorry for the language (that steam will censor anyways), but please listen to me. I have played this for a long time and I know what I'm talking about.

    Peace Out

Microtransactions, when promised none to be included in the game, CS: GO elements, stat boosting skins...and by the time this review is written, it's only day 3 of the event.
It'll be a long while till they recover from this mess.

Current status of this game can only be described as a desperate cash grab attempt. This was a respected game with a growing community; I hardly doubt that will be the case any longer. Microtransactions in a paid game. Makes the game Pay to win. Overkill lied to it's fans and customers. We will not stand for this nonsense. Skyrim introduced paid mods and it's reviews dropped from 98% to 70%, after which paid mods were removed. Do the same to Payday 2, and if they have any shame they will fix this.

I will play this game solely with my friends because its a great way to pass the time. However, Overkill better not expect any more money from me either for DLC or from microtransactions. I was even amped for the walking dead game they were doing. I was understanding of the paid dlc because they're a small company but gimme a break. Microtransactions that cause certain players to have significant stat benefits over others is completely bogus. ESPECIALLY SINCE OVERKILL SAID THEY WOULD NEVER DO THAT. Isn't the whole point of Crimefest that it was all free? We earned our free content by completing the challenges Overkill gave us, so where is it? We've already managed to drag you down from 97% favorable reviews on steam, and your user score on metacritic has gone to hell. how much longer does this have to go on? Expand

I wish I could recommend this game. I really do. I've spent well over 100 hours in it, and I've enjoyed those hours quite a bit. However, when a development team commits the dual sin of A.) claiming several times that they will never add microtransactions to the game and then adding microtransactions to the game and B.) making said microtransactions have mechanical effects that cannot be achieved through any means but paying for the micro-transactions, I cannot in good conscience recommend their game. That's a serious betrayal of trust of their playerbase, and I can't recommend supporting a team that does that.

The most egregious part is the fact that there's no way to get these mechanical benefits without paying. It would be one thing if you had to pay for purely cosmetic effects but not for mechanical effects - that's what most other well-received micro-transaction games like CS:GO, TF2, and Planetside 2 do - but that's unfortunately not the case here. Don't get me wrong - I'd still be irritated by their addition, since the dev team promised several times not to use mico-transactions if they took a page out of Valve's book. But I wouldn't be recommending you stay far away.

Hopefully they'll come to their senses and alter course. But until they do, avoid this game. Don't support behavior like this.

I used to love this game, so it pains me to say this, but this was one of the worst purchases I have ever made. Developers lying, community raged only to be ignored by Overkill. The game's already filled with DLCs worth more than 100 bucks. Not to mention they broken promises as well.

over time we've been fed up with the insane amount of overpriced DLCs only to be slapped in the face with the microtransactions stuff. 0/10 never buy a game from them again

Broken game. Bugs not fixed, bad updates, bad developer, failed promises, low quality DLCs, and now microtransactions. Soon going to be f2p as well. Hopeless.

Greedy developers, instead of fixing the game and all the massive problem it has ( cheaters, de-sync, lag,bugs...), all they do is making one cash grab after another

    Stay away from this game,please.

I have 860 hours, bye, trash game. Insult us, cheated us with their microtransactions? How many times that our players accepted you **** idea, minigun, flamethrower, big sword, bow, we all said "fine, fine, it's something creativity." But now, you just throw some skins which are based on original "non dlc" weapons and buff their stats, sell as safe!!!!!!!!!!Really ?

But their business style is awful. They ask you to buy new DLC every month even we supported Payday 2 for a long time. I felt betrayed. They say we are great community but they just think the community as a wallet not a person. This is what they do to Payday 2 fans. They never took care about us. They do

Even tho the game already made profit from Pre-orders, it went from Bunch of expensive and useless piece of **** DLC's to microtransactions, showing how much Devs dont care for their Fans and those who support them. Thats a BIG **** you" to Overkill.

Play this if you enjoy getting mugged.

    Buy the game.
Get flooded by expensive **** DLCs.
Game gets 'balanced' in favor of DLC content.
    Get reamed by pay2win microtransactions.

The devs scammed the community and claims all the CRIMEFEST community challenge rewards will be free. However not only this was broken the promise was also broken. I highly recommend you to check out the article "Payday 2 won't have microtransactions - GameSpot".

What overkill did is unlawful in some countries.

PayDay 2 is one of the nicest surprises of the year. Overkill Software understands the atmosphere of gangster movies and wisely improves these pieces of gameplay, that might have been disappointing in the first game. The sequel is better in almost every way - you can play a thief and enjoy good character development and shooting systems. I really hope, that PayDay 3 will be even better.
