Fun while it lasted. Completly destroyed with dlc's. If you payed for all of them individualy it would be like ~120$ but thats not all. I've bought that game and all DLCs (around 30 of them) and what I've got for that? Weapons were nerfed and now you have to gamble with 2.5 Euro safes to get stats back. Yes weapon skins now have stats, some of them are really OP.

The game is fun but DO NOT BUY IT in its current state as the developers have recently added microtransactions and while that may seem like it doesn't affect you, the microtransactions and DLC of over $100 USD have created a Pay to Win system that is just trying to take more of your money. Steer clear of this title, there are plenty of other co-op games that will treat you better as a consumer.

Overkill created an amazing game, one of the only horde based co-op shooters out there.

But they decided it needed Pay2Win micro-transactions on top of the massive mountain of DLC, even after they promised not to, so they can shove it.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME IF YOU VALUE YOUR WALLET, get something worth your money, like candy crush or a crippling gambling addiction.

These bits of dlc where were its pay to win nature began and we didn't see it, now we are faced with micro transactions and here we are ripping the game to shreds. The developers are ignoring the community and are saying that this is good and what we want. When everyone is saying no, we don't want this. The disrespect that we as a community are being given by the devs is utterly disgusting and foul. Yet according to them the micro transactions are working as intended and this means they are still making money. The main dev even said 'Shame on you' when asked about will this game have microtransactions, now he says 'players seem to be loving it'. So as they are ignoring us we will drop every rating we can and run this games reputation into the ground, because they wont stop trying to take our money and treating us like dirt. Expand

With this system you can loot a safe as a reward after a heist. To open the safe you need to buy a drill for 2.50$ or wit a lot you can loot one every week.
The major problem with this system is that the skin gained that way can give you a bonus to your weapon. It range from a small bonus to a massive advantage.
To top it all Overkill "rebalanced" the weapon and nerfed a lot of them. But that has nothing to do with the fact they want us to buy skins.
The game is fun but is FUBAR right now and a lot needs to be done to fix the situation and gain back the trust of a lot core players.
My verdict : Avoid and look for other co-op FPS.

Now what they've basically said to their community is that they don't care about them or their opinion on what they're doing with their micro transactions, which I should mention, actually affects in game stats and effectively renders the game pay to win, and I haven't even said anything about the massive amounts of DLC they push on the community, anyways, they've also implied that their veteran fan base is irrelevant now, and that the new players they're trying to reel in with this micro transaction will give them more money than the veterans will, and therefore the new base matters. They literally could not be any more detached from their community, they have a horrible PR department, they added a pay to win system via micro transactions, they lied to their player base, and ruined the game. But now, they care about money more than making a good enjoyable game.

This game used to be one of my favorites in my steam library. About a month ago I would have still vouched for this game. However, the developers have chosen to take the game down a path that they swore they never would. Micro-transactions.

EVEN WORSE, the micro-transactions give you in game stat boosts that you would not have otherwise.

When they announced micro-transactions, the whole community went up in arms. People decided that it would be best to bash Payday 2 on steam reviews and metacritic. I decided to wait. "Maybe", I thought, "Maybe they will announce an apology after this event is done. Maybe they will take back the stat boosts and realize the mistake they had made."

Today, they made an announcement. Micro-transactions to stay. Stat boosts to stay.

What people dont understand was that a big part of this games initial selling point was the fact that they had PROMISED to the community that they would NEVER make the game a pay to win. Yet, they went back on that promise.

Furthermore, during their AMA(ask me anything: an open forum of sorts where fans and users can directly ask the company questions with an almost immediate response) said that they have always cared about their community and actively seek compromise when conflict arises, yet they did not budge one bit on the problems brought up by the community.

So, long story short, I give this game a 0/10 not because the game itself is bad, but they people that run it are. If you are looking to be treated as nothing but a wallet, if you are looking to have your voice muffled and silenced, if you are looking for a game that gets easier when you throw money at it, or you simply just love to be on the bad side of an abusive relationship, then PAY2DAY is the game for you.

If not, I would strongly advise you against this game.

I have played over 1000 hours since its release in 2013. Payday used to be a great game, but it has rapidly devolved into a system designed to milk as much money possible from its once great community. If you are interested in buying this game, I urge you to reconsider: Overkill / Starbreeze have and will continue to entirely change the game to manipulate players for money.

In a single day (the first day of Crimefest 2015), they:
    - demonstrated how they cannot be trusted by introducing microtransactions, that they promised would never become a part of the game
    - also demonstrated this by introducing microtransactions during an event they claimed was 100% free
    - introduced microtransactions (this is its own bullet point) in the form of weapon skins
    - introduced pay-to-win microtransactions by giving stat bonuses to certain weapon skins
    - introduced microtransactions in a $20 game with $120 of DLC
    - completely decimated the weapon balance, giving pistols insane power (even giving the Deagle enough power to one-shot bodyshot kill one of the toughest basic enemies in the game), and neutering shotguns and assault rifles; this is coming from someone who mostly used pistols in the past
    - in doing so, nullified the benefits of some of their own DLCs (the AA-12 is useless)

As of the end of Crimefest, Overkill has stated that none of these will be removed, and essentially declared that the veterans of the game no longer mattered to them, as the 'majority' of the player base (i.e. many new players who joined during Crimefest, while PAYDAY 2 was having a free weekend) were paying for weapon skins.

More than two years ago, prior to the launch of the game, there were rumors that the game would contain microtransactions at launch. David Goldfarb, a director for the game who left over a year ago, stated that it would not have them, and that he hoped it never would.

A community manager by the name of Almir also posted that Payday 2 would not have microtransactions at launch, and clarified on the Steam page that these rumors were at the time false.

Two years later, a fairly long time for a game to remain profitable, the game has introduced weapon skins. Some of them do offer minor statistical stat boosts, while rarer ones will offer boosts similar to standard mod load-outs, but counter the actual usage of said mods. It has very little effect in the game, but a portion of the community feels betrayed.

Do not let this dissuade you from playing this game! Most of the most recent reviews are from this very vocal group. The game is still very fun and they are still releasing content for it, even two years later.

Payday 2 was a promising but undercooked game upon release that has been slowly poisoned by downloadable content and the addition of microtransactions. Sweeping gameplay changes often upset the game's balance and community. And then the company goes back on their word, releasing paid microtransaction-based weapons skins (which are all ugly as sin). This after promising three times in various places that they'd never do anything like that, even saying "Shame on you if you thought otherwise!"

They released this update, dubbed the Black Market Update, in a "community" event that promised free content for all players. Paying $2.49 for a drill (key) to open a safe (crate) and get a disgustingly bad skin, maybe even for a weapon you don't own because it's locked behind DLC.

On top of this, there is a chance the skins can be statistically better, giving a player who paid extra money an advantage. These advantages can range from better accuracy, stability, higher concealment, extra ammo, and I'm sure there's more I'm missing.

At the same time, they released a "weapon rebalance", with the intent of making all weapons viable in some way. In reality they made certain classes of weapons in every way superior to others, and nerfed popular DLC weapons into the ground.

More than a week of buggy, unfinished "features" being added (I'm looking at you, bipods.), the head dev hosts an AMA on /r/paydaytheheist to discuss the changes. Feel free to go read it yourself, it's hilarious and sad.

He confirmed that statistically advantages on cosmetic skins will not be removed, and that the vocal minority should just ignore the skins if they don't like them (thus making their weapons objectively worse).

He also claimed that this update was necessary to generate revenue, as they weren't receiving enough to maintain their staff. He still claims that Overkill is a small indie company, despite being owned by Starbreeze. Starbreeze's recent financial report shows quite clearly that Payday 2 is making more than enough money to maintain Overkill.

Almir said himself that despite the overwhelming negative response to the pay-to-win weapon skin model, which again, they promised would NEVER happen, that it's been a huge financial success. How else could this be interpreted besides they don't care if people are angry, they're making money and that's all that matters? That's exactly what that means.

Unless you're willing to sink nearly $200 and who knows how much more into this game to have all the content, and then have to spend hundreds of hours grinding to actually unlock said content in the game, AND are willing to put up with a developer who has made it very blatantly obvious that they do not care how their community feels, avoid this game. For your own sake. Go play Killing Floor 2 or Vermintide or something, those games have devs that seem to care. Overkill, how far you've fallen. I hope you enjoy your money you fools.

This is a very disappointing game. Throughout the entire game, I can see flashes of what would be amazing design and amazing gameplay, but it is almost always tarnished or completely broken by poor implementation.

The multiplayer in this game (the only part worth playing, as the game is designed to be social) is based on a peer-to-peer system instead of a client-server system. While this has the benefits of not requiring a server to be set up to play on, it also has huge drawbacks. The netcode only vaguely shows the position of other players, often having them twenty feet behind their actual positions and making things like passing bags a strange and contentious affair. In addition, the enemy AI is based on the lobby leader, so if they have poor upload speed you will see the AI completely stop randomly. Which you may think is beneficial, but I often miss dead-on shots on still targets due to broken and/or nonexistent hitboxes (if you want to clip someone's arm or leg, you have to install a user mod because there are no arm/leg hitboxes).

The large variety of weapons are nice, but functionally it boils down to a couple of simple choices due to extremely poor balancing. Want to do stealth? Use a CAR-4 and Gruber Kurz, because you're not going to need anything else. Want to go in loud? Use an M308 and a Deagle. Due to a recent "rebalancing" of the weapons, there are some ridiculous issues. Shotguns are basically bottom-tier weapons, whereas you can basically one-shot elites with a Deagle. There are other very questionable issues as well. For instance, the Fire Axe and the Great Sword do exactly the same thing, whereas a decorative flagpole does the same thing but faster. Another example is the Empty Palm Kata, which has exactly the same stats as the basic Fist. Why? The EPK is a paid melee and is supposed to be a super-deadly martial art. Why does it do the exact same thing as the basic punch?

The style is all over the place as well. This game can become ridiculous and break its' own tension and theme very easily, whereas the first game maintained a consistent and strong atmosphere. In PD:TH, every heist felt huge and important, like the climax of a heist film - the roots of Payday. In PD2, there is a shotgun blast of heists trying to provide whatever experience people might want, including really dinky and low-effort heists. Very few of the PD2 heists match the hype, tensions and style of the majority of PD:TH heists. In addition to the design of the game itself, the design of the graphics and lighting also changed. In PD2 it's much brighter and almost festive, whereas PD:TH had a hot, washed-out graphical design that sold me the heist atmosphere much more effectively. It felt like I was playing a hardcore heist film back then.

This "shotgun blast" design is pretty indicative of basically everything they want PD2 to be. They've added in extra characters, way too many weapons and weapon mods (a lot of which make ugly-as-hell combinations), a rummage bin of heists and a couple hundred too many masks. They have been pushing to make this game as varied and attractive as possible to new players while selling the established atmosphere down the river.

That attitude relates very specifically to the most disappointing element of the game, the recently added microtransactions. The developers had specifically promised the players that microtransactions would never be in the game and that we should be ashamed to even ask the question. Unfortunately, Overkill stopped being the cool guys that the players were willing to believe they were and added paid weapon skins on the first day of Crimefest 2015, which is supposed to be a series of free rewards for the players being seriously dedicated. Instead of giving everyone skins or something like that, they just gave us the option to pay ridiculous amounts of money for skins and gave us incentive to do so with stat-boosting skins. This absurdly scummy move has alienated a good portion of the crowd, but Overkill rolled it out during the free-to-play weekend in order to cover the playerbase drop and smother opinions about the MTs under the talk of casuals playing the game for the first time. Overkill basically sold hardcore players down the river in order to replace us with more willing cash cows.

But it's not simply that they gave us poor or actively damaging updates; they also give us these updates in place of what one would assume to be incredibly vital updates that one would release immediately after release, if not on day one. One of the later Crimefest updates finally added a jump animation to this years-old game (not that it makes you want to jump on things more, thanks to the sloppy controls that seem to fight you regularly). Combining lack of incredibly obvious quality-of-life updates with game-breaking bugs that exist late into its' life make this a very unsatisfying game to play.

tl;dr would be a great game if not for terrible design and scummy developers

A lot changed on 10/15/2015. Crimefest 2015 started and the first thing they did was to add microtransactions. The community has made it very clear they do not want this model and this was done in a very underhanded way that has possibly permanently scarred many players trust in the developer. If they keep microtransactions in I will not only no longer purchase DLC, I will likely not return to Payday 2 because the state of the game and the community will continue to degrade from there. Payday 2 was one of my fafourite games. Until now. Last Crimefest added microtransactions in the game, wich was a big disappointment. Weapons stats was changed, so ballance was ruined just to force people buy skins wich affect stats. Also the fact, that because of Overkill, great site (pd2stats), made by user, where you can virtually check skill builds and weapon loadouts, was closed. If IPayday 2 was one of my fafourite games. If I understand right, company just made similar feature in the game, FBI files. I just uninstalled the game. Expand

Was fun until the developers added microtransactions and Pay2Win options after saying they never would... Uninstalled and probably won't revisit it. Oh well, plenty of other games out there I can enjoy and not be nickle and dimed.

Played this and liked this before.Remember the day, that Almir from overkill said "There will be no microtransactions in Payday2"..It was a big lie.
Overkill team still add paid DLC's,which price is in summary higher, than the "vanilla" game price for 500% or higher...These DLC's contains few guns,or 1 hour of completing all achievements in it. But they are not fixing major bugs like unsync

Payday 2 was such a good game at one point, but with all the micro transactions and how they treat their customers with disrespect by lying to them about features and completely going in a whole different direction with dlcs and patches. They just seem to be ignoring the ppl that love their game and want to keep playing and these people are being pushed about by Overkill because they wantPayday 2 was such a good game at one point, but with all the micro transactions and how they treat their customers with disrespect by lying to them about features and completely going in a whole different direction with dlcs and patches. A once great game by a once great company followed by a slide into some of the worst moneygrubbing ever seen in the games industry, If you buy this game, expect 80+ dollars of DLC, microtransactions, and being fed lies by the developer.

im not buying a million dlc's and paying to open op certain things just to enjoy a rather good piece of gaming.. the game itself is great but not very enjoyable when you can barely buy basic equipment without spending real money from the base game..

    - Paid Game ($25.00 at full price)

    - More than 20 paid DLCs to date ($5.00-$8.00 each). The most powerful weapons are locked behind DLCs. They've recently rebalanced the weapons to ensure this is the case.

    - Recently introduced micro-transactions involving RNG, so you're never certain you'll get the skin you want ($2.95 for each random drill drop). Also, 80% of the skins look trash.

PayDay 2 is one of the nicest surprises of the year. Overkill Software understands the atmosphere of gangster movies and wisely improves these pieces of gameplay, that might have been disappointing in the first game. The sequel is better in almost every way - you can play a thief and enjoy good character development and shooting systems. I really hope, that PayDay 3 will be even better.

Payday 2 is an excellent co-op shooter - a vast improvement over the first one. [Sept 2013]

A unique and captivating multiplayer experience that rewards team work over personal glory. But make sure you bring friends for the true experience. [Nov 2013, p.62]
