On the note of the gameplay alone, the "Bash" mechanic is singlehandedly one of the most innovative and great tools a platformer could ask for. It recontextualizes combat from the enemies acting as obstacles to enemies becoming bridges and helping hands to travel around. The game was also bold in its execution of replacing boss fights with escape sequences (AKA the best parts of Metroid).
The only critique I have for the game is that despite the main themes being forgiveness and compassion even to creatures that do a lot of harm, there is no way to beat the game without "killing" a lot of enemies which are described as brainwashed by the setting.

    + Perfect music

    + Lovable story
    + Cool platformer level designs

For starters the story is one that manages to be simple yet powerful. Ori is a guardian spirit adopted by a sloth (I think) named Naru. Life seems to be going great until the forest starts to wither. This is thanks to an owl named Kuro that disrupted the balance of the elements. Now it's time for Ori to bring balance back to the forest. What makes this story so memorable and emotional is the way the story is presented. None of the characters utter a word yet there is so much personality conveyed through their animations. Combined with the accompanying music and visuals and the story successfully conveys all of struggles and triumphs that Ori goes through. My words can't do it justice but just know that these cutscene gave me the feels. (Which I thought was impossible)

One of the obvious highlights of this game is the presentation. This may just be the most beautiful game I have ever played. The backgrounds look ripped right out of a painting, the colors really pop, the monsters look cool, and I love how Ori stands out against these backgrounds. I love Ori's design in general. It's simple, charming, and extremely adorable. And the cutscenes are nothing short of breathtaking. If there exist someone that say that video game are not art, show them this game. If their mind isn't changed, then they don't know the meaning of art.

Visuals are one thing but music is another and this OST is among the greatest OSTs in any video game. IT'S SO AMAZING!!! All of the tracks are filled to the brim with life and emotion, it's mind-blowing. There isn't a single bad track here and it manages to be ambient, melancholy, triumphant, exciting, and terrifying. And the chase sequences...just, GO LISTEN TO IT RIGHT NOW!!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!

If you've played a platformer or metroidvania, jumping in won't be very difficult. Traversing through this interconnected world is made insanely fun thanks to Ori's control. (I played with a controller btw) At first Ori can't do much. He can shoot fairly short ranged projectiles but that's it. But it won't be long before Ori can get passive upgrades or new moves that can enhance his agility and combat skills. They're great and once the bash ability is unlocked, Ori can go insane with what he can do. Bouncing off of enemies and environments is very satisfying, Seriously, you have no idea. (Unless you played the game) Combine this with Ori possessing quick movement, and the fact that all of these moves all utilize the buttons well, makes each new move truly feel like an extension of your moveset that makes Ori a dream to control. It's amazing. Just don't expect to get through without a lot of deaths.

This game can be very difficult. Each area has its own challenges to offer and they can be quite difficult. In fact on my first run I died over 200 times. This doesn't sound fun but 1. There aren't many cheap deaths in this game and 2. Respawning takes less than a second. This means that even with the more difficult parts, the pace of the game is barely affected. Though my first playthrough still managed to get me frustrated at times, namely the chase sequences. Still, this is nowhere near an unfair game, just be prepared to die a lot your first go-around.

Finally, the completion process. There are many collectables spread across this game and it was a blast trying to find them all (with the exception of a few that were extremely well hidden) I had so much fun searching every nook and cranny to find items that increased my health and energy. Anytime my curiosity was rewarded my brain was filled to the brim with dopamine. This game encourages exploration so have at it. Combine this with the fluid and fun movement and I'd say you won't regret it. Though there is one more challenge to this game.

The Steam Achievements can be quite brutal. While I wasn't able to get all of them, I did get most of them and for that I played the game two more times. At the end of my first run I was happy with the game but these subsequent playthroughs made me fully fall in love with this game. The harder difficulty made me rethink my approach to enemies and the speedrun was beyond exhilarating and was some of the most fun I've had with a video game in a long time. Truly an unforgettable experience. So yeah, consider these achievements a try.

Overall this game is nothing short of magical. It has an emotional story, incredibly smooth controls, superb gameplay, fantastic music and visuals, a tough but fair challenge, and a world that is filled with so many meaningful collectables that are fun to collect. Sure, your first run may be really rough. You may find yourself dying dozens of times and getting frustrated but believe me, when you conquer those challenges, you'll find it insanely rewarding. Play this. It's an experience no one should miss.

    Score: 9/10 (Maybe even a 10)

    Gameplay

Essentially the game blends some platforming and Metroidvania elements with less of a focus on combat and more of a focus on the platforming. The game features various abilities that you unlock to make movement and traversal of the 2d map easier and accessible, this includes going back to areas you’ve previously been through mainly you would do this to get all of the collectibles there are to unlock. The platforming feels very intuitive as the controls are great and work really well, the abilities you unlock feel really good as well. For the most part, the platforming is straightforward with it being clear where you need to go, I was only stuck once or twice. The game is pretty challenging but definitely rewarding and enjoyable, the escape sequences are the most difficult section of the game and can be quite frustrating especially if you aren’t very good at platformers liek myself. The game’s combat is a bit odd as it mainly revolves around clicking the trigger to cause flames to hit the enemy, you can damage them using the charge ability or stomp you get later on but mainly it will be the flames, the combat isn’t very interesting and isn’t the main focus of the game. There are a variety of enemies that each have different attacks but there are only a few enemies in the game, you will largely encounter the same enemy with a harder version. The game is pretty short, I was able to 100% it in about 10 hours on hard though I have played it before, however, the game is only $5 so it is still worth it.

    Story

The story follows Ori as they attempt to bring the forest back after an incident that left it dark and caused their parental figure to starve. Mainly the story is told through cutscenes that play as you progress and deal with restoring three parts of the forest. You encounter a villainous owl with their own very real reasons to be opposed to attempts to restore the light. The story is quite well told and is pack full of emotions.

    Graphics

This game is simply gorgeous, the wonderful backgrounds and characters look stunning and create a unique look for the game. Every area of the game will be beautiful to look at and looks like art in each instance. Each area has a unique background that fits the area incredibly well. If there is one complaint I have about the art it’s that in some cases it is so overwhelming in its beauty it can be hard to see enemies.

    Soundtrack

It has a beautiful soundtrack that has many strong pieces that help to resonate the emotions of the story as well as the intensity of the gameplay. Each is well crafted though largely the soundtrack isn’t insanely memorable.

    Conclusion

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition is a solid platformer with beautiful art and a great story, for $5 you really can’t go wrong with this game if you like platformers.

The music is very beautiful too but started to feel repetitive after a few hours so I turned it off a few times to give my ears a break.

The story felt familiar. It's skillfully told but not very unique. A forest is dying and you have to save it by finding a number of magical items related to the natural elements in order to restore power to a big Spirit Tree.
One aspect of the story that I really liked is that it avoids using old moral absolutes like good and evil and instead paints a more complex image of how various natural forces may have to work against each other for different reasons.

I only have two problems with this game, but they're so big that I can't give the game a higher rating than 7/10. These are:

    1. The frustration
I know that there are people who enjoy extremely challenging games. I'm just not one of them. I play games to relax and feel good. Ori and the Blind Forest made me feel almost sick because of the extreme stress and frustratingly difficult gameplay.

There's nothing I hate more than precise and unforgiving platform distances where you have to jump at the very last pixel of one platform to reach the very first pixel of another. I constantly found myself stuck, having to repeat the same jump fifty or eighty times before finally making it across, usually for vertical jumps from the ground up to a climbable wall. There's nothing entertaining or enjoyable about that type of gameplay, in my opinion. The game would have been so much more enjoyable for me with more forgiving jump distances.

The same goes for the countdown scenes, where you have to escape death by running from a raising flood of various elements that will swallow you if you make the tiniest mistake. I got stuck having to repeat these scenes at least fifteen or even thirty times before I could pass. I assume it's an integral part of these extremely challenging games, that you must not only learn the right path but practice it to perfection until you can get every single button push absolutely right before you're allowed to move on. I just don't enjoy it. In fact, I hate it. It ruined the game for me.

I chose Easy mode because I mainly wanted to enjoy the story and some relaxed platforming, and I still got the most challenging and infuriating game experience of my entire life. It felt like the game developers wanted to torture me instead of giving me a good experience.

I took me 11 hours and 41 minutes to finish the short game. I died 421 times. That's on average 1.6 deaths per minute.

In Easy mode. To "enjoy the story".

I managed to finish the game somehow, put it didn't give me a sense of pride or accomplishment. My only thoughts were "Finally!" and "Never again!".

    2. The confusion
This game isn't content with giving you the most extreme and unforgiving challenges. It's also built-in to the game itself that you HAVE TO fail the first time, no matter what you do. For example, you often have to make jumps towards platforms that you can't see because they're placed outside the visible screen. Unless you make at least one fatal error and plunge to your death you'll never find out where the next platform is. And since you can't always save your gameplay, because you need a specific type of resource to create a save point, I ended up having to repeat many long sections of most levels - not because of my own mistakes, but because there was no way to know how to get it right the first time. This is one aspect of the game that makes the game developers seem almost sadistic, like they're setting you up for failure instead of success.

A particularly awful use of this sadistic type of game design appears once your character learns to dash jump using projectiles shot towards him/her. A series of such dash jumps often leads you high up in the sky where you often can't see a single visible platform to aim for, leaving you desperately dashing back and forth between projectiles, without a single clue where you're supposed to jump, and usually leading to multiple deaths before you finally discover where you're supposed to aim the last dash jump.

I'm a decently intelligent fellow and a fairly seasoned gamer, and I was still forced to look up walkthrough videos on YouTube multiple times to figure out what I was supposed to do and where I was supposed to go. Even after seeing the solutions they didn't feel obvious or like something I could've figured out just using my eyes and intelligence. Instead the solutions often confirmed that the game is designed to make you fail.

In summary, Ori and the Blind Forest is a stunning game that you should only play if you enjoy extreme challenges that require lots of effort and practice. I really love how it looks but I absolutely hate the gameplay.

Great game!! The game is beautiful and the gameplay is fast and fun. It's definitely worth playing.
It would easily be a 9/10, but there is a part of the game that you play with gravity, and it's a truly boring part, I think the controls doesn't adapt very well when the gravity change. This part took me 40 min to beat and doesn't compromise the rest of the game that is amazing.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a very colorful metroidvania taking place in an enchanted forest, threatened by a dark force. Although the scenario is nothing exceptional, the story is told quite poetically, leaving you sometimes amazed, sometimes melancholic. These feelings are also conveyed by the excellent soundtracks.

Gameplay-wise, if I consider most Castlevanias to be 60% fight, 30% platform and 10% puzzles, I would say Ori is more like 50% platform, 30% puzzles and 20% fight. Platform phases are well thought and not repetitive: the developers have strived so that each platform phase/puzzle really differs from the others and pushes the player to think a bit on how to solve it. Like many Metroidvanias, the game is a bit short: it roughly took me 15~20 hours, and I was really taking my time to find every secret and visit the whole map. But there is stuff to keep you busy: some Steam achievements for hardcore gamers and speedrunners.

I want to insist once again: it is the most beautiful 2D game I know: wonderful design, colors, light effects, character models... I take my hat off to the developers.

    A must-have.

Ori is a nicely designed platformer that is Metroidvania/Megaman-like. It starts with a nice story that gets you curious enough to want to play, although that is quickly forgotten and irrelevant once you get past the prologue and into the actual game.

The map is designed so that you have to follow a semi-linear path to collect upgrades to progress through the game. These upgrades are also necessary in order to access previously unexplored areas that were inaccessible without those upgrades.

The game allows you to save anywhere at any time, but it doesn't remind you to do so. Thus, be sure to save every so often so that you don't get frustrated playing through areas over and over again.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the keyboard controls suck, so I strongly recommend using a controller to play this game. There was actually a necessary skill in the game that my mouse and keyboard didn't work with at all (YMMV), so I had no choice but to use a controller. You might want to keep this in mind.

Overall, I feel the game could have been better. It got a bit stale for me every so often, so I couldn't play it for hours on end. The music is amazing and worthy of buying standalone, but that's about it. The other people giving the game scores of 9 or 10 are definitely blowing it out of proportion, but I can understand why they would give the game positive ratings.

I debated for a while what score to give this game, since although its platformer gameplay is good and has a lot of fancy tricks, that's all the game has going for it. The story is lackluster, and when you compare this to a game like Child of Light, this game doesn't really hold a candle to it. Personally, because of the lack of story and a lot of jumping around for hours on end, I feel that a solid 8 is fair, although a bit generous.

Ori must bring balance to the forest after the Spirit Tree's call to find Ori destroyed most of food and life in the surrounding vicinity.  The game plays as a Metroid-esque 2D side-scrolling platformer and does a really good job at it. I am terrible at these games and as you can see below, I died FREQUENTLY, but even I was able to complete the main story in just over ten hours. I missed a lot of the collectibles and an entire part of the map, so by the time I collected most of those and explored the area, my time was closer to 15 hours.

Before you can even control Ori one this is glaringly obvious: the game is beautiful. The game does not feature much dialog, so the story relies heavily on the atmosphere. Each area is unique but the designers did a great job of making the world feel connected. I personally found the music even more enjoyable than the visuals. Whether you're in part of the forest covered in mist, in an active volcano, or even running from a bolder 100 times your size, the music strikes a chord deep inside you. It either gets your adrenaline pumping or brings a tear to your eye.

Like I wrote earlier, the game is very Metroid-esque. You explore the 2D forest, collecting power-ups along the way. Some of these powers-ups are located around the map and some of them are located on your skill tree, which require experience and "leveling up" to unlock. The power-ups located around the forest help unlock secrets and places you previously could not complete. I've never been a fan of these kind of games but I never felt lost on what to do or where to go next. Some of the power-ups are more useful than others and you don't even need two of them to complete the game. The game also offers health shards and power shards for you to collect, giving you even more reason to explore every nook and cranny and making me even more overwhelmed. Indie games used to be simpler.

I played on a mouse and keyboard, although I think using a controller would make playing a bit easier. I only say this as my fingers on the keyboard would often get confused and I died a lot because of this. You use the keyboard to move, jump, and overall traverse your way through the map and you use the mouse for combat. Even with that said about the controller, controlling Ori is very fluid and natural. Using your attack is as easy as clicking the mouse button, but later on, I utilized the "counter" ability as it does way more damage than my wet noodle attacks ever did.

I really enjoyed this game. It's been awhile since I've had so much fun with an indie game. I got immediately hooked and school was the only reason I stopped playing it. It is one of those games where you can not touch it for months but can get back into it after a minute of looking at everything. I'm glad I got a chance to review such a treat. The sequel is coming out later this year and I hope Moon studios can live up the quality that Ori and the Blind Forest has. If you have 20 bucks to spare, get this game. You will not be disappointed!

Personally, I have noticed that the game did obviously people don't really know a lot about this genre, a lot of flaws and complaints, the game design it is worth mentioning separately, because after the next new task, you're just like a mutt don't understand which way you should go. The apogee of all, was the point where we need to overcome the path, holding a ball which protects us, and here comes the juicy. The game is made in a bright style, which personally made me mad and many times screwed, because I simply haven't seen some traps and small enemies, the brightness was through the roof, all combined, and sometimes do it in one color. Playing on the keyboard, you will have a sharp movement(jerk), in contrast to the smooth on the gamepad, but the keyboard is quite passable. As for me as this is the usual game of its genre, not nearly standing out from the rest (in a good way), no memorable moments or characters, for me it was a one time thing. Again to suffer in her I don't want to.

really beautiful game with a great soundtrack. However, the gameplay was pretty unbearable in most of the "intense moments". I'm probably just really bad at video games, but most of the end of level sections left me feeling helpless. it was too easy to get trapped and die in some little nook, or the timing was off and Kuro would eat me 20 times in a row. Please work on this for future projects.

Great game. I didn't think a platformer could be so engrossing on the storytelling level, but Ori pulled it off. Also loved the gameplay - smooth as butter.

This game is close to being a classic but in the end, for a casual gamer like myself, it completely misses the mark and ends up being extremely frustrating.

Most of the game is a reasonable challenge on normal difficulty. I then got to the ginso tree. This changed my opinion about the game completely, I started to hate the game. It isn't as if the developers didn't know players get frustrated with this level, there are lots of threads on how annoying and unfair it is. Even on easy it is incredibly annoying.

So if you are a casual gamer, skip the frustration and play and game from a developer who actually cares.

Very amazing and beautiful game, beautiful story and adorable characters. I loved every minute of it. The endings of first and second parts were a little difficult and got somewhat frustrating, kind of wanted to smash my gamepad a couple times, but you overcome it! Highly recommend it!

This game is amazing. The combination of the breathtaking visuals and the tight and engaging gameplay make it fantastic. If you want a little challenge this game will be perfect for you (also you can easily complete it 100% in 10-15 hours). I also should not forget to mention the amazing music, even if some soundtracks were repeated.
This is the best platformer I have and you will

This is the best platformer I have and you will probably ever play/ed. The amount of Abilities and usage of them feels really astoundingly good.

Its a really solid metroidvania, with a ton of cool ability's and secrets. It also looks fantastic and the music is on point. there is one flaw that I found after beating it though, Boss fights can be stupid and cheap you out on life's.

Being surrounded by such vivid imagery constantly throughout game play is a definitive plus for feeling compelled and having a desire to keep going. Every new area always feels new and fresh to play through. The story also adds to the experience and world of Ori as it an emotional one that adds to the tone of the game and makes it that much more of a wholesome experience to invest in. While the additions don't change the game in any fundamental way, the overall experience is still as amazing as it was last year. If you haven't played Ori before, this Definitive Edition is a must buy.
