You're stranded at a cathedral-like train station in the near future, searching for a ticket out of town. Explore the secret passageways, interact with strangers, dig for records, and get hypnotized by the soundtrack a batch of original music courtesy of the band, Archie Pelago.

In the game, players will uncover a world where the fate of its musicians and artists is unclear, yet their tools of the trade are highly prized. Meanwhile, the station itself provides all the comforts a commuter could ask for: great food, the best beer, entertaining board games, relaxing gardens. But who is really benefiting here? It is entirely up to the player to what degree they want to engage in and interpret Off-Peak's stories, characters and themes.

Despite its amateurish execution Off-Peak is really worth your time, because it’s a brilliant game that tackles the problem of art’s role in modern world with rare maturity. [02/2017, p.52]

Your main goal is to find the pieces of a train ticket in order to get out of the station but really the game is as much about talking with various characters and learning about the day to day lives and goings on in the train station. The music helps set the mood as one that is strange and almost a tad unsettling and surreal. The story may not make a lot of sense as to who you are; where you are; or what is going on but it doesn’t really matter as the game has a way of pulling you in and making you want to explore to see even more oddities.

I played Off-Peak on Linux. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any spelling errors. There is just a option for resolution and one graphics setting. Alt-Tab doesn’t work. There is no save system at all and while this would normally enrage me the game is short enough it isn’t a big deal. The lighting detail; ground detail and shadows were good and above average. Clothing detail and the sky detail were decent but not great. Facial detail; hair detail; building detail and object detail were pretty poor. The murals on certain walls were fantastic. Overall the game has some performance issues at times and I say that because the graphics detail does not justify the hardware usage I saw and the frame rates I got. There were some drops to the 40’s at times and while that is not super low the visual quality shouldn’t have dropped the frame rate below a constant 60. The frame rate is locked to 60 and there is no option to change it that I saw.

    Game Engine: Unity
    Disk Space Used: 593 MB
    Save System: None

    Frame Rate: 47-60 FPS

If you enjoy trippy walking sims such as Paratopic or Gravity Bone you will probably enjoy Off- Peak. It is free so there is no reason not to try it. I finished the game in twenty three minutes. It was a bit short but managed to make an impact in it’s short time despite it’s performance issues.

A waste of time, boring and gave me a headache playing it. Just felt pointless and it's not fun at all.
