I wanted to like this. Something to satisfy my hunger until a new Zelda game is out. But this is a very sloppy made game :/

Here is my biggest gripe with the game: THERE IS NO JUMP-SLASH TECHNIQUE! For those of us who play video games in general for the battle combinations as we try to amaze our friends with skill and flexible handling, this game is not what WE want. Not even is the full-rotation-of-thumb spin attack from Ocarina of Time accounted for: spin attacks should be seamless and without the need for three-second-attack-button holds! In the words of Austin Powers' Dr. Evil, "I WANT SHARKS WITH FREAKIN' LASER BEAMS ATTACHED TO THEIR HEADS." The only fun way to hurt enemies in this game is to throw projectiles (arrows, jars, bombs, etc.)!
I agree with TitaniumDragon: this game isn't bad, and there really are sparse details to recommend. The one thing this game does well is the graphics but not even this detail scores higher than the Windwaker Zelda which is 15 years old at least.
With respect to combat and controls there is zero excess points when compared to the controls in The Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages Zeldas; at least Capcom had the guts to provide some creativity to the concept of time and provide fantastical creatures of their own.

If you didn't play Oceanhorn, and merely watched someone else play, you might think it was a good game.

You would be wrong. The game has a charming artistic style and feel but it quickly falls apart as you dive into it. Oceanhorn unabashedly borrows most of the major mechanics from the Zelda franchise, including sword/shield fighting, bombs, arrows, dungeons, bosses, quests, etc.

Oceanhorn unabashedly borrows most of the major mechanics from the Zelda franchise, including sword/shield fighting, bombs, arrows, dungeons, bosses, quests, etc. and does them all rather worse. Controls are clunky at best, with the character only loosely obeying control commands and not quickly. The game compensates for this by making the bosses (with 2 notable exceptions) extraordinarily easy.

There are random sailing around sequences that serve no purpose but to waste your time. They contribute nothing at all to the story or game advancement. It would be much better to simply have you select the next island you want to go to from the map (actually you pretty much do that anyway).

To say the story is cliche is an insult to cliches. Father eaten by monster. You get his sword and seek vengeance/answers, princess to save, old sensei to guide you. You get the drift.

Puzzles are decent-ish but most of the thinking required in the game involves trying to figure out where to go next, or what seemingly-random item you need to collect once you get there. The game does very little in the way of giving you clues on where to go or what to do, at times feeling too open and simultaneously claustrophobic, because you don't REALLY have to get in your damn boat for 10 minutes again just to check that one place that might not even have what you need? Please don't make me.

So why play the game? No reason. I'm not even sure why I finished it. I'm only reviewing it because it somehow had a 73 on Metacritic according to Steam, and that is just horribly misleading for some poor people who might considering buying it. Don't.

this game is a rip off of legend of zelda. i kinda am angry about that, but, also it IS a game like legend of zelda i don't have to play on GBA emulator online besides botw, so that's kinda good. i still like legend of zelda better, though.

This should have stayed a phone game. I really disliked it and in fact I deleted the game after going through 3/4 of it, although I usually try to finish games. The story is uninteresting, the game is short so you don't get attached to anyone, in contrast to classic RPGs. Don't waste your time with this one. Expand

Visually and gameplay-wise Oceanhorn is a good Zelda clone with lots of charme, definitely worth a journey by sailing boat.

Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is a clone of Zelda (especially Wind Waker) that doesn't really do anything to avoid the comparison with the Nintendo brand. If the personality is dramatically under the heels, the game still manages to offer some fun thanks to the setting, the graphics and the exploration.

Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is a pleasantly surprising homage to a classic adventure series.
