The game has problems, but at least it deserves such an assessment because it gives a new experience, especially after numerous updates. It is a pity that the developers hastened to release.

It is 2022. September 6th. After over 200 hours into the game and 6 years of playing this game I can only say...man what a ride.
    In the Beginning:
Hello Games said "This is going to be the biggest and Best multiplayer space exploration game EVER Created!" It was the biggest Space exploration game ever created, and that was true. Still is. However, through many of the scary and crazy fan expectations brought on by pressure from the ad markets and the hype train caused by the trailer and the almost pushed-upon promises, the game was released...with less than half of it finished. It had a vast, beautiful, and atmospheric universe...With nothing in it, except bugs.
If it ended there, I would not be writing this in 2022.
After bad scores, and a flood and just the internet and world being extremely toxic, Hello Games has done what almost no game company had done before or since. (Besides CD Project Red with CyberPunk 2077) Hello games got to work, and went Dark.
Fast Forward almost a year or so and they came out with patch after patch, then an expansion. It added and fixed a LOT. But not enough for some people.
Then another few months, and ANOTHER expansion and patches all throughout.
They began talking again, taking user reviews and suggestions, and fixing their game. It took until now, and I know they are not done, but their game has undergone hundreds of patches or more and 20 of those were named updates. All for Free. Everything promised is now in the game. plus more. Multiplayer in an interesting way, a story, actually there's even side stories now. a player hub, freighters, base building in space, underwater etc...It still seems like there is a long way to go, though they are right now sitting at patch 3.99.1 as of August 19th. It will be releasing on Switch in October. I feel there is another Huge update coming from them soon with how things are going with more space customization. There is also many more modes to play, like permadeath, survival, creative, and Expeditions, which are completely multiplayer where you start out in the same place as everyone else at the same time. Plus you have co op as well. At it's core it is still the same game, so i would love more events to happen, actual NPC bad guys that have ground and space/air battle tactics, and something huge to happen. Even just bigger space wars, pirate groups and real factions added so the aliens feel more like they are a group. So like cities and the like. Did I mention you can become a mayor of a small settlement? No? Well you can lol and also send your fleet off to do missions. yes. Fleet. All in all I will give it a 9 because, Well Done Hello Games.

No Man's Sky is definitely one of my favourite games ever made because of the large open world, many things to do and also the constant updates. Hello games may have launched a broken lacklustre game, however, now it is more than it was expected to be.

Spent a good few hours with it now and it does have that tiny bit of appeal that just wants to you keep going, just one more little discovery here and there before I leave the planet or even think about moving onto another system.

Runs just okay (I have fairly old hardware but not ancient) however for what it is I'd have expected better personally (I mean Ark: Survival evolved runs a lot better than this at twice the resolution lol) while being 10 times prettier and with probably 100 times more colours in its palette). It sure isn't going to win any princess awards but that isn't to say it's ugly but at best it's maybe the average girl you knew at school.

In playing it though I found it was a lot more involved than what I thought it would be in some areas while also not being very deep or as engaging as I had hoped for in others. The ships handle like crap forcing you upwards if you dare aim too high (no mofo, I don't wanna leave the planet just yet) and also preventing you from just hovering around at stand still when you're actually just wanting to scout specific areas on a planet (this works okay once in space though).

The inventory management is just pretty awful with UI that shifts beneath your movements (I'm using a mouse but I believe it's true of all control versions) and if you're comparing ships with large inventories (and then trying to move stuff across) it just cuts off a bunch on the sides. Another minor issue is that I constantly get a reminder to redeem my pre-order DLC for a ship that is far worse than the one I have now (I just didn't want any special bonuses at start you see).

Overall though I've enjoyed some bits and found that perhaps like others I had just gone in with unrealistic expectations. This would have been okay with it coming it at half of it's current asking price but at a full priced AAA game I feel it's just a pure cash grab primarily driven with Sony being at the back door (as usual) pushing it far more than it deserved to be.

The FOV settings don't actually give you the angle that you expect so instead you'll have to resort to editing one of the config files if you want anything that closely even resembles what should be standard on PC (i.e. I set mine at 125 which is probably closer to 90). Having to hold in your action button (left click) to change settings is also just stupid - I'm okay with this for the in game activation stuff but on the settings screen when you first start it's absolutely stupid.

The map just sucks too. So you move your mouse along to the path to highlight a direction and if you move too much before you know it it'll have jumped along to the next system again in that path (so very obviously created primarily with a controller in mind).

A neat sort of little trick I found was sprinting and then using the jetpack just before you run out of stamina...jetpack in bursts (while at the same speed that you were running at) to keep from getting to high and then just as you land toggle the sprint again. Still awfully slow if you've wondered too far from your ship and that's probably one of the things that helped for the boredom to set it quicker than what it should.

Blah blah blah I've gone on too long. It's okay to mess around with and maybe it'll get better later on but right now it's no where near worth the current asking price.

When you charge premium money for a game then people have a right to set reasonable expectations for that kind of experience. No Man's Sky fails to live up to that expectation and publishers should stop trying to get away with it.

No loading screens... warp scenes are very long loading times
Realistic physics... blow a hole in rock formation and its left hanging in the air isn't realistic physics
Multi-player... um... did I miss it somewhere?

What it looks like, is the dev team bit off more than they can chew. Seems they decided it would take too much to do this game as it was original portrayed, so they released a tech demo with a few bolted on game play elements.

Hell, this is so un-optimised it plays poorly on a 980Ti, and the longer you play, the worse the game FPS becomes. You have to restart every few hours else it becomes unplayable.

My advice is wait till its in a humble bundle or less than $10 on steam.

Firstly this upscaling 720p into 1080p graphic is absolutely horrendous. In regards to that, anti-aliasing option is simply not working, and being completely left off. I can’t endure those jaggy edges and blurry graphics. It can simply make you blind, even i feel like high after 1-2 hours session. Seriously there is something wrong about graphics apart of technical flaws. If not for the games like this (AAA priced ones!!) why do we buy GTX 1080 and pay £600 for that, right?

Second important thing needs to be addressed is that Hello Games decided to hire a QA team right after release…What about before release? Can’t you just test the game before release it! Isn't that more professional way to do it! I understand that low budget companies sometimes do not invest into it, instead they try to sort it out inside the company. However, if you charge AAA price to a game, perceptibly people expect some quality in it.

Everybody has already mentioned about technical problem, and some sort of troubleshooting so I skip that. Most of you have got literally 2-3 hours before a bed time after work, dinner, gym..etc . If those hours are very precious to you, i strongly recommend to not waste it with this game at its current stage! Otherwise, you force yourself to play it just to ease the pain of £39.99..

However, there are couple of things that i like in this game. if you are a Sci-fi fan like me that would be worth to chase the root of alien civilization by reading lores and following the routes of atlas guidance. So there is no story line but game pushes you to find out. I admit I like this hidden concept however it is still too hard to navigate in galaxy map due bad design and framerate drops. I also have some hopes that in future we will get some different generated planets like giant mountains , lava, gas clouds..etc, PVP battles, storyline, patches..etc . Hope, they somehow deliver it!

I hate that I have to give this game a 1 and I know that by most metrics it does not deserve that: it is functional. It is a game that is finished. But the problem is that the game we have is not the game we were promised.

The short version is this: No Man's Sky gets a 1 from me because of the disappointment factor. It is the single most disappointing video game experience I have ever had and it's entirely the producer's fault.

The hype began three years ago (same E3 that first teased Bloodborne if I recall correctly) and it looked amazing. It looked like Minecraft, Subnautica, Mass Effect, this sprawling survivor space adventure unlike anything we had ever experienced and what's more, it was advertised as such. There would be EVE like space interactions (we were told after all that this would be a multiplayer game) and I was excited. I followed the hype and was so excited for this game.

I pre-ordered it and on midnight of release for PC I installed it.

The first few minutes were troubling and it quickly turned devastating. There is nothing to do. You mine but cannot build much. You discover but cannot share with anyone (turns out Multiplayer does not exist). You learn alien words but the interactions with aliens are flat and uninspired. The most exciting thing that might happen is you accidentally shoot a sentinel: the dull and lifeless protectors... or something... of every planet in the universe.

What is so disappointing is how easy that would have been to correct. The set up for great plots are there: what are the sentinels? How are they everywhere? what's the deal with these aliens? What is Atlas? There is so much and yet the only hint of a plot is to continually slog away through procedurally generated planets until I guess you can reach the universe's core.

The only merit this game has is to drive home the stark, existential reality of space travel. That we are surrounded by such vast nothingness and I suppose in that way it's a moodily artistic commentary on life but not one that is worth 60 dollars. The price is borderline theft. This is not a triple A game and Hello games has a very long way to go before it can consider itself a triple A producer. This tremendous failure of a game (in that it has failed to deliver on any of its promise) will be an obstacle that they will need to work a very long time to overcome.

(PS, I love that I can check a box for spoilers. As if there's any story here to spoil at all)

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]
