It's a pity there were so many porting issues on release. Even taking that to account, the sheer quality of this game more than makes up for the technical issues. It's one of the best games I've ever played.

This is one of the best games I've ever played. Why? It's about the whole atmosphere, music, story and combat. The combination of all these.

It is a VERY artistic and philosophic game with VERY sexy combat.

You will only like it if you can open up to its atmosphere, suck in every bit of it. Then, this game will make you very happy!

And, the boss fights, are really epic!!!

The 'in the moment' parts of this game is enough to make you feel something but after you finish the game and look at people's 1 hour videos discussing it, that's when you realise this game had much more to say than what you saw. The gameplay also is really fun most of the time. It has some annoying moments such as the hacking you do later in the 2nd playthrough but in the same swing has some of the most eye opening and interesting experiences which are so unique. The characters are really well done and have a really striking personality from the operator to the bosses you fight. Many of the characters you meet will bring something new to the table and have a story behind them which you will either learn about or just think about in your head later on.

This game also has one of the most beautiful and diverse original soundtracks I've ever heard in a video game and is amazing that we haven't heard more from Keiichii Okabe. With all these things mixed together so perfectly, it really is just a nice feeling to be part of this story and it makes me upset that I'll never experience this for the first time ever again. Don't miss out one, you won't regret it.

This game... I mean, it is something unique. Yea, it has quite clunky gameplay, but it's atmosphere, music, and especially plot with characters... it something created not in this world, it is from somewhere else. I highly recommend anyone to give it a shot, although firstly it might firstly seem to be like an average game, trust me, when you finish it, you would feel fulfilled.

The game is just an underrated gem, one of the very few "experiences" instead of "games" I've felt along with God of War and FFVII Remake. The story is portrayed very well and it evokes philosophical aspects in any way. It is a great JRPG that stands on its own compared to the others.

The game is just an underrated gem, one of the very few "experiences" instead of "games" I've felt along with God of War and FFVII Remake. The story is portrayed very well and it evokes philosophical aspects in any way. It is a great JRPG that stands on its own compared to the others.

Starting off with the game's greatest element for me is its OSTs. The very great ones, one that I'll put in the same tier as the remade songs of FFVII OG in FFVII Remake. The atmosphere is moody, it definitely adds up with the OST. The combination of the moody atmosphere and the OSTs tells the background and the story of the game very differently compared to the conventional methods other games employ -- it is hidden but it is something you can feel while you play the game, you can foresee the future events just by playing the game.

The combat is truly a great aspect of it. The characters have different abilities, the animations are very smooth when chained together. It is good for both beginners and players with great skills. There is a plethora of enemies in the list, with different attacks and attack patterns, plus your playstyle with different weapons, it doesn't feel repetitive unlike most of the RPGs there is (grind, loot, repeat).

The graphics? It is great, ofc not AAA-title nor Mario graphics and it simply conveys what there is to it there. The moody theme + OST is the perfect combination I've been finding in today's videogames, but I only found it here.

The menu is not clunky, it is straightforward but not really a fan of the map (it can be a bit confusing at times). All you need to see is reachable only by L1/R1 buttons unlike the mess in some games.

On the technical aspect, it is one of the worst ports ever made from a PS4 game. Square is good at keeping the nostalgia which makes them still run today only producing few new games (lmao), but this is something I hated from them. The PC port has lots of struggles, but I knew the PS4 version is perfect so I have it a 10. It is a 4 in PC, there are various workarounds you need to do for the experience I've been telling which includes mods. They are simple and easy, but buying off something and having to do the mess the devs should have addressed before releasing the port is an annoyance. Haven't bought NieR: Replicant, but I think they have addressed this kind of problem they have as a company.

NieR: Automata is a 10/10 for me in OST and Story + story telling, an 8/10 for me in combat, and the worst 4/10 for the PC Port. It is also the sequel of NieR: Replicant, and from Drakengard if you want to know the whole story. The timeline is way too far from each other that you can almost separate Automata from the 2010 game but Automata having some elements of it. This is something I recommend, in PS4, but not much in PC unless you know what you're doing. It is rarely on sale, so i suggest to grab it once it has been on one.

There is more greatness there is I can tell, but can't remember them all because this is not a game, it is experience worthy to cherish.

First of all - PC port is a massive ass. It has bugs, glitches, you have to use third party stuff to play the game normally. But even despite all of this, it is a really well made game. Story, world, level design - outstanding. The soundtrack is out of this world, you can listen to it forever. Combat is very simplistic and honestly a bit basic but for this game this is not a problem at all.

Playing through the multiple endings never feels too tiresome and in a sense provides a segmented pacing for the whole narrative. Throughout my time with the game, I have begun to see the nature of Yoko Taro's work and how he wants to tell his stories. It is fair to say that not everything will be clear to you and yet it will. The final moment of this game is truly an exceptional experience in this medium and one pulled off perfectly. It left me with a heavy heart and yet I can't help but smile. Does this mean that I did not have any reservations towards this game? No. I certainly did. But, a great game such as this can go beyond that for what it ultimately strives for.

I've never had a desire to write a review before, but my time with this game induced something that gave me a the urge to do so. If I can extend my hand as a recommendation for this game in hopes that at least one person gives it a chance, then that's all I can wish for. I just wished I played this much earlier. I won't forget about this game.

They say that they're bored, story isn't engaging. I think it's universal to any game that is not holding players by their hands explaining every single detail around them to build up the narrative.
Quite frankly, I'm still surprised people even consider putting this kind of argument in NieR: Automata reviews, as this game has its story unfolding right off the bat, throwing players immediately into their first mission.
Without spoilers, NieR:Automata story revolves around the question that both philosophers, although more sophisticated, and more down to earth folk think about - soul, consciousness, and possibility of both forming in inanimate objects, like androids, machines. It is question that player, through character, at some point will naturally start asking themselves throughout the course of the game. If you feel like you're not fit to answer such abstract questions, do not fret, because there are protagonists that are programmed to 'think' they're not fit to do either, and going through their story ultimately let you find the answer... the answer that director, Yoko Taro, thought would make a touching story.
I think the best part of both games in NieR series, are characters. I never thought I could be attached to videogame character in my life. In fact, before NieR I've never been attached to any protagonist of any videogame that i played. Whatever i felt during my playthrough was completely new feeling that i experienced.
Main point of NieR series is answering existential questions and feeling of compassion towards not only friendly characters, but also the ones we face.
Sadness also plays big role as, obviously, it's probably the best emotion to fill art with meaning and to put people in position to reflect on later. I think that's exactly what art is for, and NieR:Automata does it remarkably.

NieR: Automata is a one-of-a-kind experience that doesn't necessariiy have a goal to be a "good game". It tries to change you, surprise you and most of the times it definitely succeeds at it. It's such a complex game that it's hard for me to describe it accurately. I doubt I will ever play a game that would be as special to me as NieR: Automata. It's not a game, it's something else.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

During the first ~10 hours of the game, i might've given Nier: Automata a solid 7 / 10. Good gameplay that suffers from its out ambitions in a rather underperforming enviroment. Fun, but lacking in some aspects. Especially after the first few hours the game starts to get somewhat mundane and it needs a few hours to catch up with itself.

It's difflicult to rate Nier: Automata without spoiling it, so let me put it that way: It doesn't feel like a focustestet product that's developed to match a certain target audience. This game was made by people who don't give a **** about the player and who just wanted to make the thing they wanted. Depending on how you vibe with those people, you either enjoy Automata tremendously or not at all.

My 9/10 comes from a feeling i didn't had in a long time. It's most similiar to the feeling i had playing jrpgs as a child. Moving trough a foreign world in which everything could happen at any time. And that's worth quite a bit to me. For others, it might not worth be anything at all.

Firstly, a lot of the magazine reviews of NieR: Automata only cover the initial play through (Ending A). While this is good on its own, it should really be noted that the game expands way beyond that, and most of the actual story is from the third play through onwards. Keep that in mind if you plan to play for the story as it turns a 10 hour game into a 50+ hour one. Keep that in mind if you plan to play for the story as it turns a 10 hour game into a 50+ hour one. I won't spoil anything in this review, but please play until route C at least.

The game follows the story of three androids - 2B, 9S and A2. They are sent to Earth to take back control of the planet from the machines who almost wiped out the humans (at least, this is what you're told initially...). The game mechanics are very slick and combat is incredibly smooth and satisfying, as expected by a game by Platinum.

The game world is barren but very atmospheric and the soundtrack by Keiichi Okabe is easily one of the best I've ever heard. Boss fights are multi-layered and extremely epic, and the game switches genre seemingly on the fly between an action RPG, twin-stick shooter, top-down shooter and side-scrolling shooter.

The real magic of NieR: Automata is the story though. On the first playthrough you'll get to the end and think "there has to be more to this". You're then greeted by a message saying that the game has multiple endings. Sure enough, the 2nd play through is similar to the first but with a few key changes. It's not until you get to the third play through that you realise there's so much more going on. In fact, I would consider the first two play throughs to be more like an extended prologue.

A very significant event happens at the start of Route C which will hit players hard. You'll soon realise that the game is an extremely emotional one with twists and turns that leave you reeling. Definitely try to keep away from spoilers where possible and stick with it and you'll experience one of the greatest games of this generation. Yoko Taro loves to toy with his playerbase's emotions and some of the things that happen (particularly in Route C) will tear your heart out.

There are a couple of technical issues with the PC version currently. 1920x1080 fullscreen actually upscales 900p so it looks blurry. This is a bug but it hasn't been fixed at time of writing. This can be solved by using a Borderless Window program. Some users are also experiencing some freezing and white screens. I use a GTX1060 and have had a couple of 1 second freezes but nothing too major. Just be aware that it isn't a perfect port, but it is a playable one.

Once some of the technical issues are worked out, I genuinely believe that this will go down as one of the greatest games of the last 10 years. The story is that good and I would seriously recommend anyone on the fence to give it a shot.

You can tell the game was done on a relatively low budget. The combat could use more variety, as with the enemies. The NPCs and world are relatively bland.
That said everything just clicks in this game. A very memorable gaming experience overall.

Masterful writing! When you get to the end, you've seen 20% of the story. More points of view show you how you've been lied to, but the lying is never done. Some of this is pretty challenging and the learning curve is steep so don't be ashamed to play the intro on Easy Mode because it's a long way to the first save.

I almost want to give this game a 10, but I'm not for a few reasons I'll mention in a moment.

But first, here are the good things:

ALMOST EVERYTHING. And I mean that quite literally. The combat isn't as detailed and technical as Dark Souls, but it is better than Shadow of Mordor and the Batman series. I place it nearly perfectly between the two. You won't be timing almost every single attack, dodge, and parry as meticulously as you would in Dark Souls, but you'll also not be spamming 2 buttons non-stop as the previously mentioned games either. Dodging is very simple yet not at the same time. You can spam it if you wish, but you'll be missing out on counter opportunities and you will also be spending much longer than necessary to defeat enemies, and it flat out won't work on Hard difficulty or above.

The graphics are great. I wouldn't say perfect, but they are impressive enough. I am not going into that more, because graphics aren't all that important to me these days.

Customizing your character, while a bit arduous at times, is really deep and worth the investment. Do you want to be a ranged hero? Ok, put those chips in. Do you want to be a defensively minded speed demon? You can do that as well. Do you want to have higher drop rates and exp? Also doable. Whatever you can imagine, you can do if you just spend time customizing your chip loadout. On the flip side, if you do not like how time consuming that can be, you can use the 3 automatic options (Balanced, Attack, and Defense). They do a good job of maximizing your potential with the chips and space you have.

The humor in the game is just about perfect. I don't like games that border on slapstick, unless that's what I'm specifically playing, but I also don't like games that always take themselves too seriously. This one hits the nail on the head. The Pods' dry wit is always enjoyable, while the Easter Eggs are perfectly placed and the incidental humor from some quests is obscure enough to feel proud of yourself when you get it but not so obscure that only Dennis Miller would enjoy it.

My last positive, but not the last positive this game has, is the story and replayability. There is so much depth to a game with only 10-15 hours of play through the first time you get through it. Even when that is done, you get to come back an watch the entire main story line a second time through another perspective, and when that's done, you get to play further into the future to see the consequences of the main story and develop out the lore of the entire series just a bit further. This is where Platinum and Square Enix nailed it, and where I think they've improved upon the genre for all times as Dark Souls did with its ambiguity. I highly expect to see many other games in the future take this route as well: save money by reusing graphical assets and maps, but develop the story more by making second and third play throughs flesh out the main story line and other characters in those same areas. They perfectly nailed it in Nier: Automata.

Now for a very short list of cons...

There is no ramp up from Normal to Hard. Normal is really simple. It may as well be "Easy" except that it doesn't allow you to use some of the automated gameplay chips that Easy does. Hard and Very Hard are nearly the same difficulty. Trash mobs are worse in Very Hard, but even then, they are still just Trash. Bosses, on the other hand, nearly always can one shot on both difficulties. If you're going to play hard, just set it to Very Hard so you can feel a bit better about yourself when all is said and done. A positive of all of this is that Easy allows for people with disabilities or those that do not like challenges in games to still enjoy the story, which is well worth the price of admission.

Another thing you're going to find awful is a certain part during the 3rd play through. I won't get too in depth about it, but let's just say stumbling around with almost no abilities for 5-10 minutes could have been better accomplished via a cut scene rather than making everyone play through it. It was absolutely awful and unfun. Just glad I didn't die. I can't imagine having to do that again.

Overall, I'd give this game a 9.5 out of 10. The worst part about this game isn't really something that can be detrimental to the review score: it is over and done with. The developer has already said we should not expect any meaningful DLC, if we get any at all. That's very sad. However, with the success this game is seeing, I cannot wait to see where they take a sequel, and I'll be anxiously waiting to throw my money at it.

I'm going to do my best to be objective with this review here, I think it would be easy for me to just give the game a 10 based on the effect it had on my by the end, but I'm going to give it a 9 due to the pc version having a lot of issues for me and some of the other aspects of the game lacking a bit. I feel the GAMEPLAY is worthy of an 8 score for the game, but since the story and connection to characters is so powerful by the end I have to bump it up to a 9

So the most important thing here - I played original Nier completely all endings and it's one of my all time faves. I'm 2.5 years late to the party with this game and one thing I heard from original PS3 Nier fans (some of them anyway) is that Nier Automata pales in comparison to PS3 Nier in almost every way. I couldn't disagree more, I feel this game improves on literally everything. As much as I became attached to Yonah, Nier and Kaine, I would say I'm even more connected to this game's characters. Having said that though, the connection for me came much later than it did with Nier as it took longer in this game for me to feel the attachment to the characters. There were actually times early in the game that seemed to have some emotional intensity that I felt detached from and I wondered if it was just not clicking with me. But, later it did come and even changed how I viewed those scenes that didn't hit for me at first.

I think it could be argued the STORY and LORE of this game aren't super strong or complex. In actuality, it's a bit simple and basic, but what shines is the emotional depth to which the game manages to get to as you get further in the game and via the characters as you learn more about them and what's really going on. I spent a good chunk of the game a little cold towards the main characters but by the end and after it was over just being overcome with emotion multiple times. This game DEEPLY affected me and I think will sit with me forever along with other games that have done so like original Nier, Xenogears and Xenosaga. This COULD be at the top of the list, but that may just be because it's most fresh in my mind.

Gameplay wise it's good but has issues, just like Nier. The combat is good and much improved, the biggest step up from Nier in my mind. Graphics are pretty bad and outdated, most of the game looking like PS3 tier in my mind. The environments are iffy and a bit boring and the fishing is an afterthought, even more so than regular Nier. There is a TON of backtracking which gets annoying too, same as original Nier. But, there are some fun sidequests which have humor and a bit of lore building as well as a god-tier soundtrack and voice acting, also like Nier. This was a low budget game and you can feel it at times, but it more than makes up for it in the story department and main characters. If you did play original Nier there are a few nice fan service moments that are nicely done and hit emotionally.

Ultimately I spent 80% of this game having fun but at the same time wondering if I was every going to feel a strong connection to the characters, then the last 20% and post-game thinking this is the most attached to game characters I've ever experienced and so much emotion wrapped up into this game and cast that it's hard to describe. I've been thinking about it for days after fully completing the game and I doubt I will ever stop.

I've had to fight with myself multiple times in this review to not say things that would even give hints to spoilers, but trust me when I say I'm a bit dead inside as a human, a bit old, have played a lot of games, seen a lot of movies and watched a lot of tv. And in my time practically nothing has moved me like this game has.

I finished the game with almost all of its endings and I sit in front of my PC, writing this review and thinking...the game was so good. The game was great. Storyline was incredible, main characters where unique and each one of mc had its specific way of expressing feelings. From time to time Automata made me extremely bored but when I got to any of its endings it was such a relief. Every single main ending (out of 5) made me cry my heart out so much. Each time I've felt bored the feeling just vanished when I got to see it.
NieR: Automata isn't an example of a perfect game. I'd dare to say that due to it's technical issues game makes people feel dissapointed with it at some point. So am I. I feel so painted that I can't say only good things about this game. Nevertheless, if you're considering buying the game - by all means - do it. After all, you won't regret it - I dare you!
As I've said before; Each time I got disgusted with anything about Automata was just a matter of time to forget about it.
Isn't that beautiful? That in the end, a few minutes were worth so much. And that - I feel - is the greatest thing I can say about any game.

    What you can expect:

-The game has a brilliant, unique storytelling. You should know, that playing through the game multiple times is a MUST. The 1st playthrough is little more then an extended tutorial. The second playthrough is mostly the same story, but from the perspective of a different character, with new mechanics and informations available, so it doesn't get boring. It is in the 3rd playthrough where the real story begins.

-The combat is extremely enjoyable. The PC version does have some control issues during hacking mini-game sessions, and the occasional flight missions however. You can get used to it fast, but it might cause some annoyance.

    -The soundtrack is amazing.

-The graphics are average, It's apparent here that the game didn't have a AAA budget.

I liked to story, it made me think multiple times, mostly about philosophy but admittedly sometimes the story felt predictable but just as often I felt genuinely sad for the characters.

I have heard that a lot of people are having problems with FPS, but I never got them often enough to effect my enjoyment, few times yes but not that often.
This is a must buy game in my opinion.
As for why I didn't give 10/10 is the multiple small things that annoyed me, for instance the story bits when you were unable to fight due to story reasons and thus get killed by trash mobs and forcing you to lose progress. (Got my revenge on the trash mobs later on)

It's a slasher with RPG elements. The combat system works fine, from fighting with robots get pleasure from a good slasher without the hundreds of combo. Oh, and the robots themselves sometimes quite funny. Their design is nice as the design in General of all characters in the game. Of course, everyone likes the main character 2B - it is the main sex symbol in the games this year. Even girls will find their favourite.

In NieR: Automata we travel through the open world. And it is time for developers to deviate from this trend. How much can you make empty open worlds? In this game the world is moderately interesting to explore - yet it is the Earth after the disaster, but it would be possible to make it a little more alive. To overcome the large space, and animals that well, especially the animal must first lure.

Graphics. We returned in 2007. The game doesn't look modern. For this reason, optimization should be elegant, but it is commendable. Not terrible, and thanks for that.

We overcome this open world for the sake of interesting stories. You can even skip the side quests and only go for the main plot - nothing to lose. To the PC version, I have read the game - Yes, for the sake of this plot is to beat the game. But not once - 3 times. It is necessary that to know the WHOLE story. It's an unusual approach, but it is interesting. Under the new passage, they give you no loot and story elements.

NieR: Automata is by no mean a flawless game, It didn't had a big budget in terms of "Triple A" and the development time was short from the early concept arts to release.
You can clearly see the lack of enemy varity and the empty "not so detailed" world filled with invisible walls and it runs on a **** in-house engine...

Platinum Games satisfying smooth and action packed combat system from 3D to Side-scrolling to Top-Down with ideas that have never been in a video game before combined with definitely one of the best soundtracks out there (over 40) that come in many variations +8 Bit versions! (And not a single one of them is weak, no wonder they are giving concerts for them.) and crazy Yoko Taro's way of telling you a mature story with some hilarious and questionable moments was what made this game unforgettable.

You don't beat the game, the game beats you.

Story-wise, the game is amazing. The game has alternative endings, five of them are major endings.
One of them is almost a "secret" ending, and this one is the true ending of the game. The ending "E".

It has some technical issues as bugs, res, crashes etc, I had to solve it with Borderless Gaming software, hence I'm giving 9 out of 10.

The game basically has three story arcs:
    - First, you play as 2B
    - Second, you play as 9S
    - Third... things go wild.
You really should finish the third arc before even thinking about giving a score for this game.

As for 9S in your second gameplay, it is the story in his perspective, so a lot of new story details are shown. For the third arc, everything changes and this game will make you really feel. If you are stupid and get bored because reasons, you can literally ignore all his exclusive side quests and rush to the third arc easily. For more insight as why you should complete side-quests, see below.

The gameplay is good, the mechanics don't make you feel bored. They change cameras in a good way, the scenarios are **** amazing and they offer new perspectives and mechanics here and there to change your experience with the game.

The SIDE-quests are really important in this game. They are not "go get some bread for the homeless guy for no reasons". All of them are either connected and give information about the world or, after beating the game, you will remember that NPC that said or did something and you will relate really hard to it. The weapon stories are connected to the deepest feelings of the characters, in a poetic form. Many things and conversations between the characters will have a deeper meaning after you beat the game, which makes you wonder a lot. The collectibles (archives etc) are of major importance to clarify so many things and give insight about the world around you.
What I'm saying is: everything in this game exists for a reason.

The OST is incredible, one of the best I've ever seen. And somehow, they will touch you. I don't know how, but the songs are just... deep.
If you go to youtube and look for the main theme in japanese, even the singer cries by the ending of the song. You know something is f*cking amazing when even the singer is crying over it.

Graphs are ok. Nothing master race, but still you will enjoy them. The art concept of the game is incredible, I have no words to describe it, it's a work of a master.

Price? It's worth it, I don't regret for paying the full price. You must have this game in your collection.
Though I disagree with the high prices of SE on Steam, this one I can say I'm glad to have.

    1. To give them a chance to experience what could be Platinum's best game yet

    2. To give Yoko Taro all of my damn money.

So, yeah, Nier: Automata. Sequel to 2010's Nier, which was a spinoff of the Drakengard series. Announced during Square-Enix's bizarre E3 conference in 2015, this game went under the code name Nier: New Project until its full reveal at the Paris Games Week show later in the year. It was delayed from its initial release window of November 2016 to give the team more time to work on improving gameplay balance the overall quality. Finally releasing in March of 2017, it has gone on to sell well over a million copies, making it one of Platinum's best-selling titles.

I admit I didn't know much about the game until I noticed the demo available on the PS4 store. Seeing that it was a Platinum Games title, I kinda knew what I would be in for, and that I would likely enjoy it. I decided to give it a shot one night and, needless to say, I was more than impressed. I bought it for PC right around release and have been enjoying it since.

As I said before, if you know Platinum's style, you know what to expect from a game like this. Frantic combat, a varied and dynamic soundtrack, a brilliantly-crafted story with memorable characters, and epic boss fights. But seeing as this is a Yoko Taro game, it has just the right amount of "what the ♥♥♥♥?" sprinkled in. It's equal parts heartwarming, heart-rending, hilarious, and horrifying, sometimes within the span of a few minutes. This game will mess with your emotions. One minute you could be fully engaged in a life-or-death struggle against a boss, and the next minute, the story will be tugging on your heartstrings.

Now, there are a few things that I have to mention that keep it from being 100% perfect in my eyes:

    1. The PC port is bad. It's not terrible, and I've seen much worse, but it needs work. For a while, I and many others couldn't play it due to a bug in graphics drivers causing the game to crash just from swinging around 2B's weapon. This was eventually fixed with a future driver, but there are still lingering issues that can be at least duct-taped over with the Far mod. If you get this game on Steam, you NEED the Far mod. It fixes some issues with fullscreen resolution and with stuttering during cutscenes. There are also some misc options and tweaks.

    2. The second playthrough was kind of a bummer, mostly because the character you play as is weak when it comes to combat and thus relies on a separate skill to take down enemies. Basically, you better hope you're good at twin-stick shooters. If you are, well, it just gets kinda tedious.

Other than that, I can highly recommend this game. My best suggestion is to go in as blind as possible and do as many of the sidequests as possible to get the best experience. Also, the DLC isn't all that essential, but it has some fun extras like outfits and hair dyes, and a special boss fight.

An intense hack-and-slash action RPG which plays like an open-world version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance while also incorporating gameplay from other types of games to give you a one-of-a-kind experience.

Although the open-world aspect of the game is somewhat shallow relative to the rest of the game, the side quests and the enormous map will have you exploring for hours upon hours. Too much can be said about this game, and it would be difficult to describe each aspect in full. It's a new game that tries to stand out from other action RPGs and comes with a beautiful female protagonist to start with.

There are five main endings and 21 secret endings in this game for you to uncover, and you must play the game from start to end at least three times to unlock them all. Each of these three iterations are different because they're based on the perspectives of the three main characters shown on the cover art (2B, 9S, and A2). They each have their own storylines, and chronologically, 2B and 9S happen at the same time, while A2 is like an epilogue (a sequel to the game itself).

You are allowed to change the difficulty at any time during the game. However, if you go beyond Normal, your Pod (a flying robot that helps you dish out some damage) becomes virtually useless and the game becomes more stressful. The game even states that Normal is recommended to get the full experience. If you're a casual player who plays games for story, I highly suggest just sticking to Normal, because it is the most balanced difficulty.

Since the game is a port, the keyboard and mouse controls aren't very friendly to use. The game has many commands that don't work well on them, so I strongly suggest playing with a controller.

When you first start off, you are given a really lengthy mission that is arguably the hardest mission in the game for most players and is akin to playing against the first boss in the first Dark Souls. If you die, you're forced to start over all again from the beginning. I don't really understand why this was included in the game, because the rest of the game is not as difficult and allows you to save often.

At death, you "lose" all of your character's upgrade chips, but you are given a chance to head back and recover them (as long as you don't die again) similar to Dark Souls.

A major balancing issue occurs when you play as 9S in the second iteration. 9S has the ability to hack enemies, so when you do, the game initiates a 2D shoot'em up mini-game that is easy (especially on keyboard) and also incredibly tedious. If you constantly win, you can easily speed your way through the game, even against extremely high level enemies.

Another major balancing issue occurs when you stack up a ton of healing chips, which makes you tanky and virtually invincible.

Overall, the game deserves a thorough play to experience all that it has to offer. It's not the most refined diamond out there, but it will easily provide you with dozens of hours of entertainment that you won't regret spending.

I haven't once felt that the game was a grind, and I've sank dozens of hours into it without any hesitation. Each playthrough lasts around 15-20 hours (including side quests), which means that you'll get around 60 hours of play time once you're done with the three main iterations.

Most people will still bash this title on the PC for the sub par post release support it got, and I believe up to this day some of the small glitches found at release are still there, unless you use the mod that fixes them. Despite all that, this game is an absolute gem, probably not for everyone, but what excellent game out there is?

When it comes to the PC "port", you will want to use a gamepad for this one, probably, since the dodge mechanic works a lot better on gamepad; somehow they thought double-tapping movement keys was a good idea...well it sucks, and this is why the gamepad works better: Other than that, you could get used to keyboard and mouse, but yeah, dodging works a lot better with the gamepad, so that's what it is.

On the technical aspect, well small and mildly annoying bugs aside, like the resolution glitch (not everyone experience this, myself included), it runs alright although the FAR mod (highly recommended, just this mod, nothing else needed) also fixes some of the possible performance issues you might encounter.

Anyway, the most amazing thing about this game is not its combat though, which is quite good, it's the setting, story and characters, and the feelings they evoke. There's a lot to think about when discovering all there is to find in this game, and completing all of the endings provides with a bigger picture on the world and what did actually happen.

If, after completely finishing this game, you find yourself full with several kinds of feelings, good and bad, joy and sadness, etc., congratulations, you played and enjoyed this amazing game to its full potential.

Very solid 9/10 and doesn't get the 10 because it lacks that "perfect" status when it comes to technical things like really good mouse and keyboard controls (come on, we're on the PC here, gamepad is fine but yeah) and that some people might need the "FAR" mod to not experience some of the release bugs that AFAIK haven't been patched (mostly resolution related, a little bit of performance improvements too, but not that big of a deal as of today).

Colour Scheme and Scenery: While NieR: Automata has a beautiful landscape with tons of new concepts and ideas, like the Amusement Park and Pascal's Village, the game suffers from a great problem that touches its beautiful scenery, the colour scheme is horrendous, the game always has this gray tone in EVERYTHING that you look at, the colours (when they are present) look washed out and boring, some may argue that the colour scheme was thought to reflect the state of the world and the characters, however i do not buy this, i think it doesnt add anything and if anything it only takes the potential that the game had to look even better.

Textures and minor details: While the overall game may look just fine, the game can range from incredible textures like 2B clothes to terrible cardboard paper textures like the rocks near the shopping district, this inconsistency summed with the bland washed out colour scheme create a very unamusing thing to look at.

Overall Settings and Perfomance: that is the worst possible thing to talk about when talking about NieR: Automata, not being able to pause and use the menu when you are doing any type of movement is ridiculous, not being able until 2021 to play the game in 16:9 is something baffling, an insult, the ammount of disregard for the PC port of this game is visible.

Story Repetition (routes): arguably while NieR has one of the best stories, it also suffers a lot from its repetition, when you are playing with 9S on route B, its the worst part of the game, you are playing something you already played, with a much worse gameplay and way more boring, overall Route B is where people seem to leave the game, i cant blame them, its not something perfect by any means, very much the opposite actually.

Things that NieR does the best:

Soundtrack: the soundtrack for NieR Automata is one of the best in the entire video game industry, the perfect combination of instruments and singing for every single moment of the game, it has somber songs, sad songs, happy songs, fighting songs, you got it all, if it wasnt for NieR's amazing soundtrack im 100% the game wouldnt be what it is.

Gameplay: NieR gives you a lot of possibilities with the setup you want to use, you can use multiple weapons, combined with your pod, which gives you a lot of possibilities on how you want to approach the fight, and the game is actually challenging, being an alternate gameplay between 2D Platformers and actual combat, it never gets boring.

Story: While one could argue that the story is not that good, i sincerely think its great, i also prefer NieR:Replicant story over Automata, however the story is not bad by any means, its really something else, entirely different, its in its own league, it plays a lot with philosophy and dilemmas, if you are not interested by those topics then obviously the story is not for you, however i dont see anything anything wrong with Automata's story, objectively speaking.

Overall: NieR: Automata is great, it has a great story, beautiful soundtrack and amazing combat, it suffers from a lot of problems in regards to settings, colour schemes, framerate and all, but if you genuinely wish to get past these problems and attempt to accept the game for what it is, it can become a fantastic experience.

This was an 8/10 before the Steam patch that made the game actually work on PC, but now it's an objective 8.5, and a subjective 10.

The game has an interesting story that's extremely well told, and a lot of the powerful story beats are delivered through gameplay, which adds to the immersion a lot. The world feels realized and complete, every little side-quest you do gets you a bit more

The game has an interesting story that's extremely well told, and a lot of the powerful story beats are delivered through gameplay, which adds to the immersion a lot. The world feels realized and complete, every little side-quest you do gets you a bit more lore, explanations, or even sometimes foreshadowing for future big moments. Ending A is just an average, kinda predictable 6/10 JRPG, nothing special. Ending B is giving interesting context and deepens the meaning of Ending A, pretty cool. Endings C and D are literally breaking down the entire established world and the frequent switching between "sides" in this part of the game really helped to get rid of the feeling of tedium and grind that's frequently present in the endgame of most RPGs, ok this is really good. Ending E ...oh my god.

Gameplay. Feels like the repetitive but fun nonetheless loops of Platinum Hack&Slashes, but what makes it stand out is the fact that every character has some special move or ability, and also the literal most immersive upgrade system I've seen in an RPG. You're a robot, and to power up you find plug-in chips to give you some new abilities and stat boosts, you can also find some new HUD elements like Save spots info or a Sound visualizer, but you can also REMOVE parts of your standard HUD like the mini-map or your health bar or enemy damage values to make space for some other parts. Extremely cool idea and well executed.

Music. Extremely good. The Nier games are known as "the best soundtrack in gaming" and I'd say it's 100% deserved. Every track fits and the whole OST has a coherent and unique style, even compared to the previous game. Both Automata and Replicant use this "chaos language" thing which is wacky but pretty cool and original, and even though they a have similar character, they still give off a very different feeling.

Graphics. They're alright, stylistically it's fantastic, especially the climax, but technically it's not as good. I feel like an LOD slider option on PC and slightly higher textures in a few places would make it look like a 2020 title. This can all be done easily with mods of course, but they're obviously not in the base game, so I'm not counting that.

I don't get the people who complain about the variety of gameplay throughout the game, isn't it a good thing? I don't think that games that stay the same are always bad, that would be ridiculous, but claims like "this game doesn't know what it wants to be" are silly to me. It just doesn't want to be the same thing for 50 hours straight.
Most of these complaints seem to come from keyboard users that also complain about rough controls in these different segments, that it was clearly not made with a keyboard in mind, and... yeah no **** It's like playing CS:GO with a controller, and being mad on the game that the controls are bad. You technically can play it that way, but why in the world would you?

Overall, extremely good, easily recommendable, it's my personal favourite game of all time. It's not as distinctly Japanese in terms of dialogue as is often the case in Jap localizations and dubs.

amazing, the story is well written and the characters are awesome, gameplay is amazing and pretty deep if you play at higher difficulties, it can get harder than a dark souls, and man... that soundtrack will stay in my spotify for a long time.

Having said that, the PC port is horrendous, sometimes it crashes( not that often), cutscenes are prerendered and played at lower framerates and resolution, there's texture and stuff pops-in from the distance, you have to download the FAR mod to fix it and it doesn't even fix all of its problems.
If you manage to get on with its problems and get through the first hours though, you'll be amazed and greeted with one of the best game of this generation.

In short: An amazing experience that you will play at least 3 times. It has amazing music, an amazing story which is really messing with your head and emotions. Only the resolution is bugged on PC and the Framerate is locked, this can be solved with a mod but should not be necessary. Bloody delicious

Assolutamente consigliato. Expand

The game itself is very good, but the PC port is terrible even after 4 years, it's also sad that Square Enix doesn't translate its games into Russian.
P.S: They finally fixed the PC version after four years

Sometimes frustrating but always compelling, Nier: Automata is a wondrous and strange experience that could only ever be a game. [Issue#261, p.60]

This unusual action game set in an offbeat world created by Taro Yoko is a treasure trove of pleasant surprises. It's not often that we meet such a stylish, offbeat, memorable game.

There is no doubt that Nier Automata is a great game, but the PC version does not do it justice. A new case of a shameless port for PC.
