This essentially makes me unable to play the next game or watch the next movie, because I still think about Nier and wouldn't be able to give full attention to the next content piece. The existence oriented theme of the game and story combined with the direct and pure form in which machines are expressing their feelings and self awareness developed progressively throughout the game is so emotionally striking that is triggers the deepest and most genuine emotions and thoughts, it is like watching a life developing from anew, like watching the child grow. And if this wasn't enough, everything gets intensified even further with wondrous soundtrack, the best one I have heard to date. I've never forgiven technical issues so easily... Expand

    1. To give them a chance to experience what could be Platinum's best game yet

    2. To give Yoko Taro all of my damn money.

So, yeah, Nier: Automata. Sequel to 2010's Nier, which was a spinoff of the Drakengard series. Announced during Square-Enix's bizarre E3 conference in 2015, this game went under the code name Nier: New Project until its full reveal at the Paris Games Week show later in the year. It was delayed from its initial release window of November 2016 to give the team more time to work on improving gameplay balance the overall quality. Finally releasing in March of 2017, it has gone on to sell well over a million copies, making it one of Platinum's best-selling titles.

I admit I didn't know much about the game until I noticed the demo available on the PS4 store. Seeing that it was a Platinum Games title, I kinda knew what I would be in for, and that I would likely enjoy it. I decided to give it a shot one night and, needless to say, I was more than impressed. I bought it for PC right around release and have been enjoying it since.

As I said before, if you know Platinum's style, you know what to expect from a game like this. Frantic combat, a varied and dynamic soundtrack, a brilliantly-crafted story with memorable characters, and epic boss fights. But seeing as this is a Yoko Taro game, it has just the right amount of "what the ♥♥♥♥?" sprinkled in. It's equal parts heartwarming, heart-rending, hilarious, and horrifying, sometimes within the span of a few minutes. This game will mess with your emotions. One minute you could be fully engaged in a life-or-death struggle against a boss, and the next minute, the story will be tugging on your heartstrings.

Now, there are a few things that I have to mention that keep it from being 100% perfect in my eyes:

    1. The PC port is bad. It's not terrible, and I've seen much worse, but it needs work. For a while, I and many others couldn't play it due to a bug in graphics drivers causing the game to crash just from swinging around 2B's weapon. This was eventually fixed with a future driver, but there are still lingering issues that can be at least duct-taped over with the Far mod. If you get this game on Steam, you NEED the Far mod. It fixes some issues with fullscreen resolution and with stuttering during cutscenes. There are also some misc options and tweaks.

    2. The second playthrough was kind of a bummer, mostly because the character you play as is weak when it comes to combat and thus relies on a separate skill to take down enemies. Basically, you better hope you're good at twin-stick shooters. If you are, well, it just gets kinda tedious.

Other than that, I can highly recommend this game. My best suggestion is to go in as blind as possible and do as many of the sidequests as possible to get the best experience. Also, the DLC isn't all that essential, but it has some fun extras like outfits and hair dyes, and a special boss fight.

This is one of the best games to show how video games are a unique form of art.

It allows you to feel whatever way you want without forcing it, yet you'll usually end up in agreement with the creators. Unlike a certain recent game that does complete opposite (check the upload time of this review).

I'll give this game a 7/10 because it is a shiitty PC port. It's full of console menus and console controls in the menus that make it very inconvenient to play with on PC. From the start I had to install borderless windowed gaming for windows 7 because the native resolution of Nier Automata is 1080i instead of 1080p, which doesn't work well on my 25" widescreen monitor. The Arcade mode controls are also optimized for consoles and you can tell on the precision of the top-down gameplay where it accepts a clock hour-style directional movement optimized for D-pads rather than the smooth aiming you could get using mouse controls.

So why am I giving this game a 10/10?

    Ending E.

When the game became self-aware and talked to me as a player, I knew the way I saw gaming as an experience, would never be the same again.

For me, it's mechanically the greatest ending in gaming history. You can only create an ending like this in games media and the execution is amazing and unforgettable. Roll the credits. Yoko Taro is a true genius.

It's been more than three years since I finished that game and I generally consider a game to be great if I would like to replay a game after a lot of time has passed because I just don't really like to complete the same games more than once cause I feel just bored being dragged the same old story I already know again. That's a factor which makes it great for me. This game left me with only great memories and now I get some kind of nostalgic feel when thinking about it. I finished the game with almost all of its endings and I sit in front of my PC, writing this review and thinking...the game was so good. The game was great. Storyline was incredible, main characters where unique and each one of mc had its specific way of expressing feelings. From time to time Automata made me extremely bored but when I got to any of its endings it was such a relief. Every single main ending (out of 5) made me cry my heart out so much. Each time I've felt bored the feeling just vanished when I got to see it.
NieR: Automata isn't an example of a perfect game. I'd dare to say that due to it's technical issues game makes people feel dissapointed with it at some point. So am I. I feel so painted that I can't say only good things about this game. Nevertheless, if you're considering buying the game - by all means - do it. After all, you won't regret it - I dare you!
As I've said before; Each time I got disgusted with anything about Automata was just a matter of time to forget about it.
Isn't that beautiful? That in the end, a few minutes were worth so much. And that - I feel - is the greatest thing I can say about any game.

This is a must buy game in my opinion.
As for why I didn't give 10/10 is the multiple small things that annoyed me, for instance the story bits when you were unable to fight due to story reasons and thus get killed by trash mobs and forcing you to lose progress. (Got my revenge on the trash mobs later on)

In short, it is a story about robots in post-apocalyptic world. And some of these robots show character growth well beyond their flesh and blood counterparts in endless JRPG. And not all of them grow to be better.

From gameplay perspective it is not much of an RPG, but combat is fun and fluid, locations are interesting to explore, art design is top notch and music is just godly. All in all Nier: Automata is unique enough to play it and look past its usual for console-port technical issues with blatant trolling in some quests and mini-games that could turn even most reserved android into raging berserker.

It is a VERY artistic and philosophic game with VERY sexy combat.

First of all - PC port is a massive ass. It has bugs, glitches, you have to use third party stuff to play the game normally. But even despite all of this, it is a really well made game. Story, world, level design - outstanding. The soundtrack is out of this world, you can listen to it forever. Combat is very simplistic and honestly a bit basic but for this game this is not a problem at all.

During the first ~10 hours of the game, i might've given Nier: Automata a solid 7 / 10. Good gameplay that suffers from its out ambitions in a rather underperforming enviroment. Fun, but lacking in some aspects. Especially after the first few hours the game starts to get somewhat mundane and it needs a few hours to catch up with itself.

It's difflicult to rate Nier: Automata without spoiling it, so let me put it that way: It doesn't feel like a focustestet product that's developed to match a certain target audience. This game was made by people who don't give a **** about the player and who just wanted to make the thing they wanted. Depending on how you vibe with those people, you either enjoy Automata tremendously or not at all.

My 9/10 comes from a feeling i didn't had in a long time. It's most similiar to the feeling i had playing jrpgs as a child. Moving trough a foreign world in which everything could happen at any time. And that's worth quite a bit to me. For others, it might not worth be anything at all.

    - There's a chance that some people will find this game less enjoyable without a gamepad. While a keyboard/mouse support is not that bad, it's still far from perfect.
    - At this moment (20 March 2017) there's an issue with fullscreen mode. If you have a monitor with resolution higher than 1920x1080, you need to:

    a. Enable windowed mode and use "Borderless Gaming" application. Please remember to not download 3rd-party software from any suspicious websites − either buy it on Steam or get it for free on GitHub.
    b. Use a fix for fullscreen mode. To install the fix, search "FAR (Fix Automata Resolution)" on Steam forums.

The system of managing your characters stats as chips is really cool. You have a finite area to plug them in, and the more special chips (with a diamond symbol) can perform the same routine while taking up a smaller number of "slots" so you get the same stat boost more efficiently. The game allows you to re-arrange and swap out chips to rebuild your entire character's spec as needed. I really enjoyed remapping the whole stack for boss encounters - really unique system and I hope other games steal this idea.

Two of my favorite gaming genres are fighting games and shmups, I love arcade style action. Platinum managed to blend those styles of play into a JRPG of all things. Very impressed.

I just finished playing 3rd play through (2nd is a different perspective same timeline, 3rd is continuation of the story so at least 3 needed, don't stop!) and wow - it shot to the top 5 games of all time for me. Don't miss it - what a surprise. Masterpiece. These don't come along that often.

Definitely a great port from platinum's side. This game is hard to emulate on a M&K combination due to its genre mashing elements, thus a controller is recommended.
The performance is stable, with no frame rate drops below 40 on heavier action scenes,

The gameplay is a master piece, the controls are great, the background music is marvelous, the characters have a good design(2B is pure love) and the artistic details are good, the graphics are well, not like a Witcher 3 or Rise of Tomb Raider, but they work perfect.

I own a good PC with a nvidia gtx 1080, and I don't have until now any major issue with this game, the fps are constant on 60fps, I use a 2k resolution to played, and everything works perfect.

What can I say? Buy it, if you like the rpg and action games, these game is a master piece.

Breathtakingly complex...this game can not be more perfect even if the gods themselves crafted it.

I've been playing video games for around 18 years now and all this time has left me jaded towards the medium. I've found it increasingly harder to find games that can capture my enjoyment and provide me an awe inspiring experience that can take me away from the real world like when I was younger. Nier Automata is one of those rare gems in gaming that brings me back to why I fell in love with the medium in the first place. Nier is the only game since the Witcher 3 that had me blink and 10 hours had passed without my noticing. Yoko Taro and his team have created a masterpiece that nobody should miss.

I will start by saying that I haven't played a Yoko Taro directed game before, but I have heard a lot of great things about his weird world that he has created that links between multiple games and franchises (Nier/Drakengard respectively) so I was really excited when I heard that Square decided to give him a good budget and a very well known studio for their character action games (Platinum) to make a sequel to the original Nier from the previous generation. So without any doubt and after hearing that it got a PC release I instantly purchased it, because I was fascinated by what Yoko Taro could do.

And what a fantastic job he and his team at Platinum Games have done. A game that shouldn't be passed on by ANYONE, because it does something that I, personally, haven't encountered in a game before (which I won't spoil here, because you HAVE TO experience it yourself).

Imagine a Platinum game that has exquisite combat, a director that is so masterful in how he presents the story giving small information and tidbits as you go along and a soundrack by a composer that is well known (Keiichi Okabe) that you take a few moments from playing the game just to listen to the music..it's THAT GOOD.

I won't go much into the story of the game, because it's very easy to spoil, but the story and overarching plot is so well done and it makes you question a lot of things about humanity, emotions, life itself and many other things.

This has been an eye opening experience that I will never forget. From the amazing soundtrack by Keiichi Okabe to the wonderful directing and story by Yoko Taro and the combat by Platinum games..they all mesh together to create one of the best Action RPG's that I have ever played. Yes, the fetch quests can be tedious and grinding can be a pain at times to achieve everything this game has to offer, but I did not waver and was fascinated by this world.

I will now post a quote from Jim Sterling's review that resonated with me so much that I cannot state it better as an ending to this lenghty review:

"Nier itself is important. It is, as far as I’m concerned, historically significant in terms of its design and the way in which it uses the framework of a videogame to tell an evolving story. If I had my way, every budding game developer would play this game to the point of acquiring endings A, B, C, D, and E before acquiescing to its final and alarmingly direct request.

Few games are able to showcase the power of the medium like Nier: Automata.

If history forgets this game, then **** history."

    Grafikler 7.5 Neden?

NieR: Automata is a curious game. And she immediately felt made by the Japanese - in a good way.

It's a slasher with RPG elements. The combat system works fine, from fighting with robots get pleasure from a good slasher without the hundreds of combo. Oh, and the robots themselves sometimes quite funny. Their design is nice as the design in General of all characters in the game. Of course, everyone likes the main character 2B - it is the main sex symbol in the games this year. Even girls will find their favourite.

In NieR: Automata we travel through the open world. And it is time for developers to deviate from this trend. How much can you make empty open worlds? In this game the world is moderately interesting to explore - yet it is the Earth after the disaster, but it would be possible to make it a little more alive. To overcome the large space, and animals that well, especially the animal must first lure.

Graphics. We returned in 2007. The game doesn't look modern. For this reason, optimization should be elegant, but it is commendable. Not terrible, and thanks for that.

We overcome this open world for the sake of interesting stories. You can even skip the side quests and only go for the main plot - nothing to lose. To the PC version, I have read the game - Yes, for the sake of this plot is to beat the game. But not once - 3 times. It is necessary that to know the WHOLE story. It's an unusual approach, but it is interesting. Under the new passage, they give you no loot and story elements.

While not flawless, Nier is undeniably a work of art that is greater than the sum of its parts. With a wide variety of gameplay styles, a remarkably well-written story with incredibly deep characters, and a memorable sound track complete with a proprietary language, Nier is a definite contender for Game of the Year awards.

PlatinumGames, while not known for deep complexity in their combat systems, have still managed to form a brand for themselves in the past few years thanks to big successes such as Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta 2. Their heavily-stylized "character action" game design fits perfectly into the anime-esque world of Nier: Automata: characters swing and throw teleporting greatswords twice their size with ease, slow down time to teleport-dodge enemy attacks, and run with an acceleration that feels like a 2-legged racing game. This also extends into the flight sequences, where you command a transforming airplane mecha with a moveset not dissimilar to your grounded counterparts. While the ground combat is even more simplistic than MGR (you can often just hold the "light attack" button [while dodging] to auto-combo normal enemies), there is such a huge variety of gameplay that you never get bored. Flight combat, hacking sequences, creative use of locked camera angles, and even mini-VNs all break up the hack 'n' slash to create what is probably the most creative mainstream "AAA" game in the past two console gens.

It's hard to talk about how good the writing in Nier is without spoilers. To put it simply, Nier is broken into two parts, each being played across two characters. One character, who surprisingly becomes the focal point of the story, has a gradual mental health degradation which even the game's support characters make it a point to notice. Most Japanese media seems to take characters who are "supposed" to be evil and has them instantly snap under pressure, typically caused by one traumatic event like a loved one dying. This game's character goes from a happy-go-lucky straight shooter and suffers multiple depressing events that I felt affected me more than him at times. His decline into insanity isn't a simple breaking point but a good dozen hours of misery that was so well written that it became the main driving force of the story. While replaying portions of the game again as a different character can become tedious, their story line splits provide a fresh look at each character and the main story itself.

So many great ideas and designs are incorporated into Nier: Automata that its hard to cover all of them in a simple written review. Nier frequently defies player expectations, creatively breaks the fourth wall, paints a rich sci-fi lore with excellent world-building, and leaves enough room to fill in the blanks with your imagination that I expect a fanbase similar to Undertale to crop up around it. Nier is the best game I've played since The Witcher 3 in July 2015. Hopefully it receives the attention it deserves because games like this are really once a gen masterpieces.

I didn't know what to make of this game before I started playing. I purposely kept myself in the dark so as to not get spoilers.
That was not necessary. No matter how much you read, watch or listening about this game, no matter how many spoilers you get, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can prepare you for the rollercoaster ride that is Nier Automata.
It's part RPG, part spectacle fighter

It's part RPG, part spectacle fighter and part bullet hell, but at the same time it's none of the above.
When people tell you that you need several playthroughs to get the entire story, it's not exactly correct. You're not finished when you're finished. Your second playthrough is not like your previous playthrough. That's all I'm saying.

This is a sad game. That's not to say it doesn't have comedy, and it does, but the overall story is tragic and sad, and there will be parts that will break your heart, but persevere because the real ending is nothing short of magic, life affirming and thought provoking.

This is a masterpiece. Not technically (the PC version is buggy), but an unquestionable triumph of storytelling, game design and character development.

The gameplay is pretty satisfying for most of the game however, and slightly underwhelming when playing as 9S. However the soundtrack, the songs, and the plot are great. It would be a bit better I think if they left some major plot points less ambiguous, but I guess that's Yoko Taro for you.
The bad thing is the ending section with the credits needs to be easier offline. I am pretty good at bullet hell games, but for the ps4 controller it was hard for me to navigate the last scene. I had to go onto multiplayer. Collapse

I mean, the storytelling is amazing, and it is only the mask of a deeper, hidden meaning and moral that shows itself only after a few hours and becomes more consistent and influencing as the plot progresses. Yoko Taro gave his characters, machines and androids, who should be emotionless "dummies", the capacity to evolve, to experience sensations, to investigate the meaning of life and of death. I won't go further to avoid spoilers, but I think this game, if fully understood, is easily Game of The Year due to the perfect combination of a great storytelling with high levels of deepness, outstanding gameplay and also a great soundtrack, placed to perfectly fit the situations and giving the scenes a moving atmosphere at times.
Give it a try, it'll change how you see the world!

    Pros :
    - Great fluid and seamless combat
    - Mind blowing music (best soundtrack in video game history)
    - A simple plot turned to be a very complex one laid through multiple endings
    - Great game design with 2D,3D everything combined well
    - The concept/theme of game is great, some of the characters are very memorable
    - Skill progression system in form of chips is unique and offers lot of playstyle combined with the large amount of weapons available

    Cons:
    - Few side quests are boring
    - Have to use Borderless window software to go fullscreen properly
    - Discrepancy between standard and hard difficulty

The thing is non of these cons are major enough affect your experience of the game.. After playing for a while you won't even notice any of these issues, since the game is so engaging. At the end of the game you are left with the amazing feeling and lot of sad emotions . This is simple a masterpiece and has become one of my most favorite games of all time.

With that being said I must say I was very much impressed with this game. Nier Automata is a game that takes place in the distant future where you take the role of a character named 2b and fight through a seemingly endless wave of "mindless" robots to complete your mission.

The story in Nier Automata isn't one your likely to forget anytime soon as it plays out similarly to something straight out of an anime. While you may like anime this type or story telling leads to some cliche character personality and behavior making my personal experience a little less enjoyable. Even so throughout the whole game i never once felt bored of the characters, yes they maybe a little cliche but its handled very well through great voice acting and seemingly perfect soundtrack execution. Throughout my experience with the story I can say that Nier provides a great sense of direction and gives a peculiar sense of wonder as you hope to discover a deeper truth as to why the machines on earth are acting the way they do.

Game play feels very solid and smooth and gives a great sense of accomplishment when taking down a hard boss. Though combat is buttery smooth I feel like there too much to spam instead of having well timed dodges I found myself just kinda spamming the dodge button while being attacked by a boss or a handful of enemies. My problems with the combat is that even after 12+ hrs of game play i still find spam to be the most effective way to dodge and counter attack my enemies. Nier Automata's combat mechanics pulls straight from the books of a dark souls game, be it this game is more forgiving through your skill and upgrades, once you die you will lose them unless you go back to your body and retrieve your skill chips. This death system made me feel like I actually had something to lose if I died and provided me some great incentive to not just Rambo and die, but think about my next attack and if I should be saving my missile salvo for the next wave or use it now. Nier Automata's combat in game play I can say has given my the most fun I have had in gaming in awhile

Other things to note would be the performance of this game and how the PC port doesn't seem to run smoothly and needs more optimization

in conclusion I can confidently say that if you are not planing on picking Nier Automata up for your PC/console in the future that your are doing yourself a disservice

Multiple playthroughs don't feel like a chore, and right about when you're not sure you have the energy to keep slogging through the beginning segment (playthrough 3) is when the game unlocks chapter select, and allows you to swap characters. Which is useful for finishing side quests, etc.

Honestly, the biggest thing that hit me is Ending E's final combat segment, and what getting "help" means. I was selfish, for now, knowing that dlc will be releasing at some point (those bunkers you find never open up during gameplay as of the time of this reviews writing). But afterwards if I 100% the game. I think I'll replay E, just to sacrifice my save data to help someone.

The story is emotional and engaging, and spans over multiple playthroughs of the game. The characters in NieR's universe are believable and have motives behind their actions- the androids and machines have more personality to them than actual human characters in other games. The combat has a ton of depth, as expected of any game developed by PlatinumGames. You could spend the entire game mashing heavy and light attacks, or you could dive in deep and learn combos and different chip builds. It offers plenty in terms of difficulty settings, from the game nearly playing itself up to being killed in one hit from any enemy. NieR: Automata provides as little or as much challenge as you want it to.

However, the PC port is where things are more than questionable. The game doesn't have the best graphics out there, and the port is iffy at best. Running it on a GTX 970 at 1080p, I often struggled to get 60 FPS above medium graphics. Hopefully we'll see a performance patch from Square Enix in the near future, as it would pretty much perfect the entire experience.

In the end, NieR: Automata is the big break Yoko Taro finally deserves. This game is the best he's directed to date, and hopefully we see more of his work in the future.

    Final Score: 10/10

There`s not much to say about such great game. It is really fun to play. Plus OST`s are just insane. Game deserves solid 9/10 aside all performance issues. Compared to MGR:R, NIER have a too simple combo system that didn't really touched my hearth. Still miss those combos tho. Thank you very much "Platinum Games" for such amazing game.

I almost want to give this game a 10, but I'm not for a few reasons I'll mention in a moment.

But first, here are the good things:

ALMOST EVERYTHING. And I mean that quite literally. The combat isn't as detailed and technical as Dark Souls, but it is better than Shadow of Mordor and the Batman series. I place it nearly perfectly between the two. You won't be timing almost every single attack, dodge, and parry as meticulously as you would in Dark Souls, but you'll also not be spamming 2 buttons non-stop as the previously mentioned games either. Dodging is very simple yet not at the same time. You can spam it if you wish, but you'll be missing out on counter opportunities and you will also be spending much longer than necessary to defeat enemies, and it flat out won't work on Hard difficulty or above.

The graphics are great. I wouldn't say perfect, but they are impressive enough. I am not going into that more, because graphics aren't all that important to me these days.

Customizing your character, while a bit arduous at times, is really deep and worth the investment. Do you want to be a ranged hero? Ok, put those chips in. Do you want to be a defensively minded speed demon? You can do that as well. Do you want to have higher drop rates and exp? Also doable. Whatever you can imagine, you can do if you just spend time customizing your chip loadout. On the flip side, if you do not like how time consuming that can be, you can use the 3 automatic options (Balanced, Attack, and Defense). They do a good job of maximizing your potential with the chips and space you have.

The humor in the game is just about perfect. I don't like games that border on slapstick, unless that's what I'm specifically playing, but I also don't like games that always take themselves too seriously. This one hits the nail on the head. The Pods' dry wit is always enjoyable, while the Easter Eggs are perfectly placed and the incidental humor from some quests is obscure enough to feel proud of yourself when you get it but not so obscure that only Dennis Miller would enjoy it.

My last positive, but not the last positive this game has, is the story and replayability. There is so much depth to a game with only 10-15 hours of play through the first time you get through it. Even when that is done, you get to come back an watch the entire main story line a second time through another perspective, and when that's done, you get to play further into the future to see the consequences of the main story and develop out the lore of the entire series just a bit further. This is where Platinum and Square Enix nailed it, and where I think they've improved upon the genre for all times as Dark Souls did with its ambiguity. I highly expect to see many other games in the future take this route as well: save money by reusing graphical assets and maps, but develop the story more by making second and third play throughs flesh out the main story line and other characters in those same areas. They perfectly nailed it in Nier: Automata.

Now for a very short list of cons...

There is no ramp up from Normal to Hard. Normal is really simple. It may as well be "Easy" except that it doesn't allow you to use some of the automated gameplay chips that Easy does. Hard and Very Hard are nearly the same difficulty. Trash mobs are worse in Very Hard, but even then, they are still just Trash. Bosses, on the other hand, nearly always can one shot on both difficulties. If you're going to play hard, just set it to Very Hard so you can feel a bit better about yourself when all is said and done. A positive of all of this is that Easy allows for people with disabilities or those that do not like challenges in games to still enjoy the story, which is well worth the price of admission.

Another thing you're going to find awful is a certain part during the 3rd play through. I won't get too in depth about it, but let's just say stumbling around with almost no abilities for 5-10 minutes could have been better accomplished via a cut scene rather than making everyone play through it. It was absolutely awful and unfun. Just glad I didn't die. I can't imagine having to do that again.

Overall, I'd give this game a 9.5 out of 10. The worst part about this game isn't really something that can be detrimental to the review score: it is over and done with. The developer has already said we should not expect any meaningful DLC, if we get any at all. That's very sad. However, with the success this game is seeing, I cannot wait to see where they take a sequel, and I'll be anxiously waiting to throw my money at it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion this game is a masterpiece. I can think of maybe 2-3 other games that I had this much fun playing through. It's story is far deeper then any western RPG I have experienced.

    What you can expect:

-The game has a brilliant, unique storytelling. You should know, that playing through the game multiple times is a MUST. The 1st playthrough is little more then an extended tutorial. The second playthrough is mostly the same story, but from the perspective of a different character, with new mechanics and informations available, so it doesn't get boring. It is in the 3rd playthrough where the real story begins.

-The combat is extremely enjoyable. The PC version does have some control issues during hacking mini-game sessions, and the occasional flight missions however. You can get used to it fast, but it might cause some annoyance.

    -The soundtrack is amazing.

-The graphics are average, It's apparent here that the game didn't have a AAA budget.

Firstly, a lot of the magazine reviews of NieR: Automata only cover the initial play through (Ending A). While this is good on its own, it should really be noted that the game expands way beyond that, and most of the actual story is from the third play through onwards. Keep that in mind if you plan to play for the story as it turns a 10 hour game into a 50+ hour one. Keep that in mind if you plan to play for the story as it turns a 10 hour game into a 50+ hour one. I won't spoil anything in this review, but please play until route C at least.

The game follows the story of three androids - 2B, 9S and A2. They are sent to Earth to take back control of the planet from the machines who almost wiped out the humans (at least, this is what you're told initially...). The game mechanics are very slick and combat is incredibly smooth and satisfying, as expected by a game by Platinum.

The game world is barren but very atmospheric and the soundtrack by Keiichi Okabe is easily one of the best I've ever heard. Boss fights are multi-layered and extremely epic, and the game switches genre seemingly on the fly between an action RPG, twin-stick shooter, top-down shooter and side-scrolling shooter.

The real magic of NieR: Automata is the story though. On the first playthrough you'll get to the end and think "there has to be more to this". You're then greeted by a message saying that the game has multiple endings. Sure enough, the 2nd play through is similar to the first but with a few key changes. It's not until you get to the third play through that you realise there's so much more going on. In fact, I would consider the first two play throughs to be more like an extended prologue.

A very significant event happens at the start of Route C which will hit players hard. You'll soon realise that the game is an extremely emotional one with twists and turns that leave you reeling. Definitely try to keep away from spoilers where possible and stick with it and you'll experience one of the greatest games of this generation. Yoko Taro loves to toy with his playerbase's emotions and some of the things that happen (particularly in Route C) will tear your heart out.

There are a couple of technical issues with the PC version currently. 1920x1080 fullscreen actually upscales 900p so it looks blurry. This is a bug but it hasn't been fixed at time of writing. This can be solved by using a Borderless Window program. Some users are also experiencing some freezing and white screens. I use a GTX1060 and have had a couple of 1 second freezes but nothing too major. Just be aware that it isn't a perfect port, but it is a playable one.

Once some of the technical issues are worked out, I genuinely believe that this will go down as one of the greatest games of the last 10 years. The story is that good and I would seriously recommend anyone on the fence to give it a shot.

Masterful writing! When you get to the end, you've seen 20% of the story. More points of view show you how you've been lied to, but the lying is never done. Some of this is pretty challenging and the learning curve is steep so don't be ashamed to play the intro on Easy Mode because it's a long way to the first save.

Artistic direction is a bit of a mixture, with really nice character design and some original stages, that contrasts with a quite forgettable world. 7/10

Music: It’s been a while since I found a videogame in which I actually stopped playing and started listening to the music. It is impossible not to notice how flawlessly the beautiful songs are blended with the scenery. The english dubbing is not bad, and the japanese is amazing. 10/10

Gameplay: 1 word - original. The game is presented as an action RPG, but the “action” element plays a big part. The combat mechanics have nothing to envy to the best action games and are clearly inspired in Bayonetta, meaning they are fun and difficult to master. There are several weapons with their own movesets (including flawless transitions between weapons mid combo). I needed around 35 hours to complete the game, and the hard and extreme difficulties were a hell of a challenge.

But it’s not only about the combat, the game keeps surprising you throughout the adventure, it will suddenly metamorphose into a side scroller beat em up, and at the next moment into Space Invaders. Despite the variety, the game can get a little bit repetitive sometimes. The major gameplay flaw is the camera, which can be all over the place sometimes and seems impossible to manage with a joystick. Another thing that the game doesn’t get right is the open world: a medium sized place with not much to do besides mindlessly practicing your combat skills against loads of repetitive enemies. Finally, the lack of autosaving for long periods of time can really be a pain. 8.5/10

Story: the story is interesting enough to keep you hooked until the end, and interesting too is how it is conveyed piece by piece (and playthrough by playthrough). Sometimes you will feel it’s a little bit melodramatic or childish for your taste, some others that you are being presented with these anime clichés you already know too well, but luckily those moments don’t last long, and the whole thing, without having many (or any) major moments, still manages to stay interesting and mostly unpredictable until the end. About the side content, you have your typical fetch quests mixed with some that are more story focused, but ultimately most of them are not very entertaining. 8/10

In summary, Nier Automata is full of fresh action oriented gameplay, with a beautiful OST and a technical aspect that gets the job done. But a boring open world and a plot that lacks climax somehow jeopardize what could have been a masterpiece. 8/10

The problems vary immensely from user to user, even between those who have virtually identical PC setups, but I assure you that it is playable on every minimum requirement PC, you just have to...find the particular problem your PC has(I needed to drop to lowest resolution, set my game to high priority and disable all the odd numbered cores through task manager every time I launched). I can also verify that this game is 99% playable with mouse and keyboard: you do NOT need a controller to enjoy yourself. Just to reiterate, if you have a PS4 and a PC, get the game for PS4, but it is very possible to have a satisfactory experience on PC once you fix your crashing problem.

Game breaking bug/crashes normally keeps me from reviewing any game to be 10 stars, but after playing through to reach 'the true ending' of the game, I have to say... from a story perspective, this just might be the single best game I've ever come across, and it would be a tragedy if the world forgot about it. This is the "Breaking Bad" of video games. This is "The Witcher 3" of 2017. The existentialist plot is about as deep as "The Matrix". The game is devised of 3 (different) playthroughs, but even hinting at what the tone of each ending is becomes a spoiler. This is a beautiful game, and all the hardships that come with playing it on PC masterrace...are ultimately worth it.

I'm going to do my best to be objective with this review here, I think it would be easy for me to just give the game a 10 based on the effect it had on my by the end, but I'm going to give it a 9 due to the pc version having a lot of issues for me and some of the other aspects of the game lacking a bit. I feel the GAMEPLAY is worthy of an 8 score for the game, but since the story and connection to characters is so powerful by the end I have to bump it up to a 9

So the most important thing here - I played original Nier completely all endings and it's one of my all time faves. I'm 2.5 years late to the party with this game and one thing I heard from original PS3 Nier fans (some of them anyway) is that Nier Automata pales in comparison to PS3 Nier in almost every way. I couldn't disagree more, I feel this game improves on literally everything. As much as I became attached to Yonah, Nier and Kaine, I would say I'm even more connected to this game's characters. Having said that though, the connection for me came much later than it did with Nier as it took longer in this game for me to feel the attachment to the characters. There were actually times early in the game that seemed to have some emotional intensity that I felt detached from and I wondered if it was just not clicking with me. But, later it did come and even changed how I viewed those scenes that didn't hit for me at first.

I think it could be argued the STORY and LORE of this game aren't super strong or complex. In actuality, it's a bit simple and basic, but what shines is the emotional depth to which the game manages to get to as you get further in the game and via the characters as you learn more about them and what's really going on. I spent a good chunk of the game a little cold towards the main characters but by the end and after it was over just being overcome with emotion multiple times. This game DEEPLY affected me and I think will sit with me forever along with other games that have done so like original Nier, Xenogears and Xenosaga. This COULD be at the top of the list, but that may just be because it's most fresh in my mind.

Gameplay wise it's good but has issues, just like Nier. The combat is good and much improved, the biggest step up from Nier in my mind. Graphics are pretty bad and outdated, most of the game looking like PS3 tier in my mind. The environments are iffy and a bit boring and the fishing is an afterthought, even more so than regular Nier. There is a TON of backtracking which gets annoying too, same as original Nier. But, there are some fun sidequests which have humor and a bit of lore building as well as a god-tier soundtrack and voice acting, also like Nier. This was a low budget game and you can feel it at times, but it more than makes up for it in the story department and main characters. If you did play original Nier there are a few nice fan service moments that are nicely done and hit emotionally.

Ultimately I spent 80% of this game having fun but at the same time wondering if I was every going to feel a strong connection to the characters, then the last 20% and post-game thinking this is the most attached to game characters I've ever experienced and so much emotion wrapped up into this game and cast that it's hard to describe. I've been thinking about it for days after fully completing the game and I doubt I will ever stop.

I've had to fight with myself multiple times in this review to not say things that would even give hints to spoilers, but trust me when I say I'm a bit dead inside as a human, a bit old, have played a lot of games, seen a lot of movies and watched a lot of tv. And in my time practically nothing has moved me like this game has.

This is probably one of the best well-done and mature games I have ever played. The issues suffered by their characters are very tough & philosophical, and show deep questions and thoughts about rich human concepts like existence, family and solitude. I am amazed.

If you don't know if you should buy this game, hopefully I can help you to decide:

Story-wise, the game is amazing. The game has alternative endings, five of them are major endings. One of them is almost a "secret" ending, and this one is the true ending of the game. The ending "E". It has some technical issues as bugs, res, crashes etc, I had to solve it with Borderless Gaming

Story-wise, the game is amazing. The game has alternative endings, five of them are major endings.
One of them is almost a "secret" ending, and this one is the true ending of the game. The ending "E".

It has some technical issues as bugs, res, crashes etc, I had to solve it with Borderless Gaming software, hence I'm giving 9 out of 10.

The game basically has three story arcs:
    - First, you play as 2B
    - Second, you play as 9S
    - Third... things go wild.
You really should finish the third arc before even thinking about giving a score for this game.

As for 9S in your second gameplay, it is the story in his perspective, so a lot of new story details are shown. For the third arc, everything changes and this game will make you really feel. If you are stupid and get bored because reasons, you can literally ignore all his exclusive side quests and rush to the third arc easily. For more insight as why you should complete side-quests, see below.

The gameplay is good, the mechanics don't make you feel bored. They change cameras in a good way, the scenarios are **** amazing and they offer new perspectives and mechanics here and there to change your experience with the game.

The SIDE-quests are really important in this game. They are not "go get some bread for the homeless guy for no reasons". All of them are either connected and give information about the world or, after beating the game, you will remember that NPC that said or did something and you will relate really hard to it. The weapon stories are connected to the deepest feelings of the characters, in a poetic form. Many things and conversations between the characters will have a deeper meaning after you beat the game, which makes you wonder a lot. The collectibles (archives etc) are of major importance to clarify so many things and give insight about the world around you.
What I'm saying is: everything in this game exists for a reason.

The OST is incredible, one of the best I've ever seen. And somehow, they will touch you. I don't know how, but the songs are just... deep.
If you go to youtube and look for the main theme in japanese, even the singer cries by the ending of the song. You know something is f*cking amazing when even the singer is crying over it.

Graphs are ok. Nothing master race, but still you will enjoy them. The art concept of the game is incredible, I have no words to describe it, it's a work of a master.

Price? It's worth it, I don't regret for paying the full price. You must have this game in your collection.
Though I disagree with the high prices of SE on Steam, this one I can say I'm glad to have.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been a fan of JRPGs since i played one of the Tales series from bamco, but never i have encountered a game that's both cool and emotional. This game perfectly express each and every moment during your gameplay, from the curiosity of entering a amusement park in a post apocalypse timeline to the last moments of your life leading to an inevitable death. IMO this is one of PlatinumGames' strenghts, since Metal Gear Rising they have hit the mark in the soundtrack, you can feel every moment as if you're living on it. In terms of storytelling, Yoko Taro may have created his greatest work in my honest opinion, the plot was perfect, the different perspective is perfect, the slight but great freedom of choice is amazing, even if its just for the joke endings still. NieR: Automata is no doubt my GOTY, Game of the Generation even. Out of the all reviewed games in metacritic, i think this game deserves to be on top of the list, this game is just to perfect to this imperfect world. Expand

The game begins with you in control of one of these units. Before I even set foot on terra firma,
I shoot robots out of the sky while flying up a screen on a 2D plane, transform into a mech and let loose in a twin-stick shooter, control my flight unit from behind as it weaves through the skeleton of an industrial complex, and navigate the building’s interior as a side-on shmup. It’s a strange mix, but it’s one that works, even if the shifting camera angles don’t always hit home, particularly in standard combat scenes.
Automata is a busy game. As combat android 2B, you’re accompanied through most of the game by 9S, a recon specialist android who fights alongside you. You both also have pods – essentially drones which fly nearby and fire at your command. Sometimes the screen is filled with enemies, too. Some combat sequences see the camera switch from free movement to a fixed position, either like a side-scroller or a top-down angle, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the battle. The thing is, it makes it damn difficult to pick yourself out in some of the busier fights. It’s style over readability.
Luckily, Automata is a forgiving game. So long as you stock up on potions when you can, you’re always just two buttons away from replenishing your health bar. There’s not really any reason why you wouldn’t run around with 99 potions all the time, just in case. Playing on Normal, I died around three times in my two playthroughs of the game, clocking in at around 30 hours. You wouldn’t know it was easy, though, what with all the dead androids scattered around. When other players die, their corpses appear in your world, you see. You can pray to their body for a health boost, you can resurrect them to fight alongside you – and now fights are even busier – or you can take on some random properties from their chipset.
Chipsets are pure genius. You’re an android, right? So, you level up by messing about with computer chips. You can plug in loads of speed chips to make yourself run fast, plug in chips to auto-heal when you’re close to death, bump up your attack, create shockwaves with each swing, and loads more. You can also buy new slots to boost yourself further. You start the game with a bunch of chips plugged in. They’re your ‘essential’ chips, for HUD elements and the like. If you don’t feel they’re so essential, you can sacrifice things like being able to see the enemy’s health bar and level if you really want more power. Just don’t unplug your central processing chip because, well, you’ll die.
It’s full of quirky little ideas like this, and you’ll find clever, touching, and bizarre moments throughout. I won’t spoil them for you, as they would have much less impact. Just make sure you rub your DualShock 4 touchpad gently, OK?
One of the game’s running jokes is the map, displayed as a basic satellite image. A couple of NPCs offer tutorial-style advice and you can complain about the map being terrible to them. Automata is happy to take the piss out of itself. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean the map isn’t pants. Likewise, the areas you explore can be a bit inconsistent, with invisible walls barring progress in places you should feasibly fit through.
It’s a bit annoying when you’re trying to track down objects and characters in one of the many sidequests. Fortunately, though, like the combat, just moving around this world feels amazing. Just as a tap of R2 triggers a cartwheel, and it’s also a dash. Keep holding it and you begin to sprint, with your character building up momentum as you go. Marry this to a double jump, a glide, and mid-air dashes, and you’ve got a heady mix for some impromptu parkour. Now deck yourself out with as many speed chips as you can fit in your OS. Go!
It feels good to go fast, right? Automata, however, is best savoured, completing all the sidequests and searching every corner. It’s a game that never really finishes. If you speed through the game and concentrate on the main quests only, putting it down once the credits roll, you will be disappointed. The ending doesn’t quite live up to what you’ve built up in your mind. But that’s because you’re not done. This is a game designed to be played over again and again. Your second playthrough is entirely different from your first. Though many of them are jokey skits, Automata has an ending for every letter of the alphabet.
