Not sure if the high marks help it for people that jump on board late because it's marks are based on the fact that people like that it tried to do something differently, rather than having achieved great features with all of the things they tried. So, if you go in with high expectations and find features that are a little dumb, clumsy it might create a disconnect.

However, I really liked it, overall. I like the ideas much more than what they accomplished with them. To me, this game vindicates those childhood platformers that made no sense (can't explain how without spoilers). Basically, those older games had features that were logically inconsistent with how physics work in our world. This game has a way of making them believable in 3d and it does that through game mechanics, not lore or cinematography... this part is very important to me. We play video games, we shouldn't be "spectators" in our own playthroughs, so it's important to me that games tell a story or make a point through mechanics (remember Antichamber) or have them work well in conjunction with the art style, music and story telling. Nier Automata is important to me because it makes platformers' logic work seamlessly, you start playing and those things make sense in 3d before you realize it. The art, the music is also appropriate with the action on screen. This helped with the imersion factor.

The combat mechanics aren't that difficult, it's approachable - and that's a good thing. It's not that easy though.

Because it tried so much being authentic, it also has some features that are simply annoying for no good reason. If this approach was used more often, I'd probabily rate this game as a 7 or an 8 because of these issues, but because this game's ideas are quite unique, I can ignore the fact that they tried stuff that doesn't make sense.

There were many times where the game is talking to your character but feels like it is talking to you which was an min-bending experience.

Other than that, the combat is satisfying and easy to learn. The visuals are stunning. Some side-quests really added to the depth of the game. Overall, this was a unique game that I recommend anyone play. However, I'd be lying if I said the game was perfect. Many side-quests are fetch-quests and the explanation of some story elements are very minimal. I even watched videos explaining the story of the previous games and I still feel dizzy trying to make sense of it all.

While I very much enjoyed the topic of existentialism in all moments of the game (also a few plot-twists that added so much depth), the story could've been less messy in tackling the subject.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Not so good are the low quality textures and the crazy framerate, but overall the graphics get the job done. Artistic direction is a bit of a mixture, with really nice character design and some original stages, that contrasts with a quite forgettable world. 7/10

Music: It’s been a while since I found a videogame in which I actually stopped playing and started listening to the music. It is impossible not to notice how flawlessly the beautiful songs are blended with the scenery. The english dubbing is not bad, and the japanese is amazing. 10/10

Gameplay: 1 word - original. The game is presented as an action RPG, but the “action” element plays a big part. The combat mechanics have nothing to envy to the best action games and are clearly inspired in Bayonetta, meaning they are fun and difficult to master. There are several weapons with their own movesets (including flawless transitions between weapons mid combo). I needed around 35 hours to complete the game, and the hard and extreme difficulties were a hell of a challenge.

But it’s not only about the combat, the game keeps surprising you throughout the adventure, it will suddenly metamorphose into a side scroller beat em up, and at the next moment into Space Invaders. Despite the variety, the game can get a little bit repetitive sometimes. The major gameplay flaw is the camera, which can be all over the place sometimes and seems impossible to manage with a joystick. Another thing that the game doesn’t get right is the open world: a medium sized place with not much to do besides mindlessly practicing your combat skills against loads of repetitive enemies. Finally, the lack of autosaving for long periods of time can really be a pain. 8.5/10

Story: the story is interesting enough to keep you hooked until the end, and interesting too is how it is conveyed piece by piece (and playthrough by playthrough). Sometimes you will feel it’s a little bit melodramatic or childish for your taste, some others that you are being presented with these anime clichés you already know too well, but luckily those moments don’t last long, and the whole thing, without having many (or any) major moments, still manages to stay interesting and mostly unpredictable until the end. About the side content, you have your typical fetch quests mixed with some that are more story focused, but ultimately most of them are not very entertaining. 8/10

In summary, Nier Automata is full of fresh action oriented gameplay, with a beautiful OST and a technical aspect that gets the job done. But a boring open world and a plot that lacks climax somehow jeopardize what could have been a masterpiece. 8/10

Weirdly brialliant. If you like Anime the likes of Evangelion, hot androids, weird logic, and convoluted meta stories portraying the meaning of life and what it means to be human, Bullet hell games, Devil May Cry fighting mechanics with a slight RPG twist and ooodles of endings in your video game. This one's a winner. Also. 2B is the sexiest games character I have ever seen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 27 hours I have just finished Nier and I'm not sure how I feel about it, overall it was good but it was heavily tarnished by certain bits.

Nier starts off so, so well, route A was some of the most enjoyable gaming I have done in a very long time, almost everything about it was perfect, it's rare I enjoy a game so much in fact. At the time I was sad the game was over because I wanted more, but be careful what you wish for because route B almost killed the game for me, it was repetitive, filled with tedious hacking mini games and boring asteroids gameplay. It definitely caused me to burn out and enjoy the rest of the game less as a result, it would have been a far better game without it. Route C was decent, although once again filled with hacking mini games which I didn't enjoy at all, 9S in general wasn't very fun to play IMO. I would have much preferred just playing 2B throughout, although A2 was obviously fine as well.

The main highs of the game for me were the music and combat, which is why it was even more annoying being tossed into mini games, I just wanted to kill machines as 2B, I didn't want to be taken out of the action to play asteroids either. As for the music it was just fantastic, it had me humming along or tapping my feet throughout, I need to listen to the OST after making this post. I also enjoyed the dialog, the banter was really good at times and some of the interactions were hilarious.

Overall it was a roller coaster, it went from an extreme high to an extreme low and finished somewhere in the middle.

    Grafikler 7.5 Neden?

But the bad part is the combat, it isn't bad but it isn't good. It is just ok. It is a hack and slash with a simple dodge bottom. With that being said I must say I was very much impressed with this game. Nier Automata is a game that takes place in the distant future where you take the role of a character named 2b and fight through a seemingly endless wave of "mindless" robots to complete your mission.

The story in Nier Automata isn't one your likely to forget anytime soon as it plays out similarly to something straight out of an anime. While you may like anime this type or story telling leads to some cliche character personality and behavior making my personal experience a little less enjoyable. Even so throughout the whole game i never once felt bored of the characters, yes they maybe a little cliche but its handled very well through great voice acting and seemingly perfect soundtrack execution. Throughout my experience with the story I can say that Nier provides a great sense of direction and gives a peculiar sense of wonder as you hope to discover a deeper truth as to why the machines on earth are acting the way they do.

Game play feels very solid and smooth and gives a great sense of accomplishment when taking down a hard boss. Though combat is buttery smooth I feel like there too much to spam instead of having well timed dodges I found myself just kinda spamming the dodge button while being attacked by a boss or a handful of enemies. My problems with the combat is that even after 12+ hrs of game play i still find spam to be the most effective way to dodge and counter attack my enemies. Nier Automata's combat mechanics pulls straight from the books of a dark souls game, be it this game is more forgiving through your skill and upgrades, once you die you will lose them unless you go back to your body and retrieve your skill chips. This death system made me feel like I actually had something to lose if I died and provided me some great incentive to not just Rambo and die, but think about my next attack and if I should be saving my missile salvo for the next wave or use it now. Nier Automata's combat in game play I can say has given my the most fun I have had in gaming in awhile

Other things to note would be the performance of this game and how the PC port doesn't seem to run smoothly and needs more optimization

in conclusion I can confidently say that if you are not planing on picking Nier Automata up for your PC/console in the future that your are doing yourself a disservice

And not all of them grow to be better.

From gameplay perspective it is not much of an RPG, but combat is fun and fluid, locations are interesting to explore, art design is top notch and music is just godly. All in all Nier: Automata is unique enough to play it and look past its usual for console-port technical issues with blatant trolling in some quests and mini-games that could turn even most reserved android into raging berserker.

It’s a strange mix, but it’s one that works, even if the shifting camera angles don’t always hit home, particularly in standard combat scenes.
Automata is a busy game. As combat android 2B, you’re accompanied through most of the game by 9S, a recon specialist android who fights alongside you. You both also have pods – essentially drones which fly nearby and fire at your command. Sometimes the screen is filled with enemies, too. Some combat sequences see the camera switch from free movement to a fixed position, either like a side-scroller or a top-down angle, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the battle. The thing is, it makes it damn difficult to pick yourself out in some of the busier fights. It’s style over readability.
Luckily, Automata is a forgiving game. So long as you stock up on potions when you can, you’re always just two buttons away from replenishing your health bar. There’s not really any reason why you wouldn’t run around with 99 potions all the time, just in case. Playing on Normal, I died around three times in my two playthroughs of the game, clocking in at around 30 hours. You wouldn’t know it was easy, though, what with all the dead androids scattered around. When other players die, their corpses appear in your world, you see. You can pray to their body for a health boost, you can resurrect them to fight alongside you – and now fights are even busier – or you can take on some random properties from their chipset.
Chipsets are pure genius. You’re an android, right? So, you level up by messing about with computer chips. You can plug in loads of speed chips to make yourself run fast, plug in chips to auto-heal when you’re close to death, bump up your attack, create shockwaves with each swing, and loads more. You can also buy new slots to boost yourself further. You start the game with a bunch of chips plugged in. They’re your ‘essential’ chips, for HUD elements and the like. If you don’t feel they’re so essential, you can sacrifice things like being able to see the enemy’s health bar and level if you really want more power. Just don’t unplug your central processing chip because, well, you’ll die.
It’s full of quirky little ideas like this, and you’ll find clever, touching, and bizarre moments throughout. I won’t spoil them for you, as they would have much less impact. Just make sure you rub your DualShock 4 touchpad gently, OK?
One of the game’s running jokes is the map, displayed as a basic satellite image. A couple of NPCs offer tutorial-style advice and you can complain about the map being terrible to them. Automata is happy to take the piss out of itself. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean the map isn’t pants. Likewise, the areas you explore can be a bit inconsistent, with invisible walls barring progress in places you should feasibly fit through.
It’s a bit annoying when you’re trying to track down objects and characters in one of the many sidequests. Fortunately, though, like the combat, just moving around this world feels amazing. Just as a tap of R2 triggers a cartwheel, and it’s also a dash. Keep holding it and you begin to sprint, with your character building up momentum as you go. Marry this to a double jump, a glide, and mid-air dashes, and you’ve got a heady mix for some impromptu parkour. Now deck yourself out with as many speed chips as you can fit in your OS. Go!
It feels good to go fast, right? Automata, however, is best savoured, completing all the sidequests and searching every corner. It’s a game that never really finishes. If you speed through the game and concentrate on the main quests only, putting it down once the credits roll, you will be disappointed. The ending doesn’t quite live up to what you’ve built up in your mind. But that’s because you’re not done. This is a game designed to be played over again and again. Your second playthrough is entirely different from your first. Though many of them are jokey skits, Automata has an ending for every letter of the alphabet.

Nier: Automata is a good game, but I couldn't bring myself to finish a second run while the game was clearly designed for multiple playthroughs. Gameplay is just not fun enough to make you play for another ~30 hours. And hacking mechanics introduced in second playthrough is very boring.

First off, urgent advice: before attempting to play NieR:Automata on mouse and keyboard, install the Input Overhaul (NAIOM) - the game is NOT playable without it, and I mean it - in some parts of the game it's impossible to do what's needed because of ridiculous controller>mouse mapping. Some other quality of life mods are recommended too - look up the definitive mod guide on Nexus.First off, urgent advice: before attempting to play NieR:Automata on mouse and keyboard, install the Input Overhaul (NAIOM) - the game is NOT playable without it, and I mean it - in some parts of the game it's impossible to do what's needed because of ridiculous controller>mouse mapping. Some other quality of life mods are recommended too - look up the definitive mod guide on Nexus.

Second urgent advice: do not stop playing once you see the end titles for the first time, this is only about half of the story. It's more than worth it to continue until you've obtained endings A-E; it's not just other perspectives later on, it's also literally a continuation of the story.

    -------------------------------

On one hand, NieR:Automata really deserves a 9/10, but on the other it deserves at most a 7/10. In the end, I'm giving it an 8/10, and below I'll explain why.

It deserves a 9/10 because in many ways it's an utterly brilliant game. The concept of the world is fascinating, the few main characters are very authentic, and the story (once you get to the >actual< end!) is so powerful that it left me emotional for days. The world design is charming and memorable, despite sub-par graphics in the vanilla version, voice acting is amazing (the Japanese voice-over is hugely recommended), and the soundtrack is otherworldly - even though there aren't too many tracks there, they're SO GOOOD that I didn't want to stop playing the game just because of the music. Combat is fun and well-balanced too, with a satisfying progression curve. Maybe the strongest suit though is that the game is original and surprising in so many ways. I won't give examples here because it's amazing and you have to see it for yourself! But let's just say that there are at least 6 different modes of gameplay, with virtually seamless transitions.

And then we get to the second part - why it deserves a 7/10 at most. It's really down to the fact that I felt compelled to give two pieces of advice at the beginning of the review - part of it is due to it being a terrible port, and part due to questionable design decisions. The game is literally unplayable on mouse & keyboard, which is just unacceptable. Some examples: negative mouse acceleration in 3rd person mode (the faster you move the mouse the slower the camera movement), and broken aiming in side-scrolling mode (mouse movements cause the crosshairs to jump up or down, but it jumps back to horizontal after each increment). Luckily modders sorted this out (in say 98% - there are still minor issues at some stages).

And by far the most questionable design decision in my view is the decision to split the game into three playthroughs, forcing the player to essentially replay the game with only minor changes and additions after "finishing" the story, in order to get to the actual second part of it, which let's just say is CRUCIAL. Even though at the end of the first playthrough the game tells you "please continue" I wasn't sure if I wanted to or if it was worth it - I looked online and saw some people saying it was worth it, so I did, but also saw plenty of people saying they gave up because of the repetitiveness, which is SUCH A SHAME. After playing through the whole thing and thinking and reading about it a lot, I remain unconvinced that this was necessary - I think the different perspectives and elements of the second playthrough could be integrated into the first, just like different perspectives were integrated at the beginning of the 3rd playthrough. It would avoid alienating many players, and make for a more cohesive and less grindy experience.

After all the experience was so amazing that I couldn't give less than an 8, but I wish I could give more.

The hacking could also get pretty tedious at times.

Interesting premise with fun combat. I really like the idea of replaying the game and getting different outcomes but got a little too grindy for me to get all the finishes. Still a very interesting game that I had fun with and it made me think.

Also, some of the mechanics may become boring after some time, which I'm not going to mention due to spoilers, but everyone who has played it will agree with me.One of the mayor points why I don't give more score to this game is due to having to replay the 1st run again, but with worse mechanics in order to see the true ending in the 3rd run. On the other hand, the universe created is splendid, the characters are amazing and you really feel them. The art at the beginning may seem a bit dry, but in the end you realise everything fits perfectly and a HUGE positive point is the music, which is just stunning. In conclusion, it is a game you should definitely try, but from my point of view, not as perfect as I heard, as I feel It could have been a bit more. Expand

    The graphics are good.

But the bad part is the combat, it isn't bad but it isn't good. It is just ok. It is a hack and slash with a simple dodge bottom. I don't like the combat system so simple and I think the game had much to improve in this aspect. God of War is an example of an awesome hack and slash combat system.

The story this far (8 hours playtime) is nothing special. Even though most of the side quests are standard fetch quests, they all have little twists and funny dialogues so they don't feel as bland as in many other games.

The gameplay is where the game shines however and anyone who like Bayonetta will like this as well. The constant switch between third person, top down and side scrolling feels really fresh and unique as well. The games switches from a linear robot smashing prologue to an open world MMO-like game and then to something completely different. They have done a really good job of merging different genres into one game. Bosses are well designed and I seriously don't even want to know what goes on in the head of the designers, it's messed up, but in a good way!

Graphics: 8 Technically the graphics are ps3 but the artwork is amazing and builds excellent atmosphere. The game has performance issues though and the optimization for the pc is bad.Nothing game-breaking but you will get dips below 60 fps even with high end cards while the graphics don't seem so demanding.Artwork>graphics so 8/10 here

Sound: 9 The soundtrack is truly memorable, one of the best i have heard in years in a videogame and it really compliments the mysterious setting of the game. The fx sound of the game is good, could be worse could be better. Not every dialog is voice acted though. It gest a 9 mostly for the amazing soundtrack

Gameplay: 7 Serious balancing issues for the difficulty levels.Very hard=one hit killed. That makes the different enemies irrelevant. Weather u get him by the smallest enemy or from the largest robot it's the same and it kills any purpose of having different enemies and different levels of enemies. In normal u have to try hard to get killed.the camera is bad in this game. You don't have lock on on hard and very hard and i had to move the camera far away from me because u constantly get attacked my mobs and u have to be aware of your surroundings 360 degrees. That creates another problem and that is that u can't really see the animations of the opponents when the are ready to strike. This and the fact that u always get attacked by mobs makes the combat more like hit,hit evade and repeat repetitively without really reacting to whats happening on the battle.Combat can be satisfying but it has these serious problems that truly hold it back from being great and deep.

In conclusion i give it a 7/10 it is a game with fresh ideas, excellent setting and atmosphere, engaging story and there is some fun to be had by the combat but at the same time it is severely flawed in the battle department, difficulty imbalance and performance issues it has.I find it quite good but certainly overestimated and judging by the scores it got and from the fact that it is developed by a company that i absolutely love, i must say i am a little bit disappointed.

The fans insisted that this game was going to be a revelation in the endings after A: that it would completely turn my understanding inside out; that I would face astonishing philosophical ideas; that I would cry multiple times at the heart-wrenching story. None of those things happened. It's a very typical anime-esque story that ticks every box on the Typical Anime Plot Points list. The examination of violence in games is about as light and straightforward as it can possibly be. The character I'm meant to care for the most is absurdly stupid, as is the Real Story about how YoRHa works.

It's undeniably stylish, and it plays with game design standards in some delightful ways at times. The combat is not so great. At least it becomes entertainingly spectacular later on, but there's a problem at the core. You have plug-in chips that radically improve your fighting abilities. On one hand, it's up to you if you use them and make the game very easy. On the other, if you die you'll have to hunt for your body and reabsorb it, otherwise you'll lose your inventory. This is enough of an annoyance that most players are going to load up their best chips simply to avoid that tedious hunting.

Despite how shallow it turns out to be, it's impossible not to become fond of its world. There's a strong design language to it all, and once you've played it you will never forget it. Even so, I wasn't enjoying myself in the first dozen hours and I spent most of the final stretch attempting to race through it because I just wanted it to be over. Maybe I shouldn't have done as many side quests as I did, but 38 hours is way too long for a game of this type. Many of the side quests were mind-numbingly bad, and the game would have benefited greatly from having most of them removed, plus many of the main missions.

I wanted to like Nier:Automata much more than I did. There's no question that N:A has many touches of brilliance. It's a great example of the benefits of an auteur creator being given the green light to make a very personal vision come to life. However, I can't give a higher rating to a game that made me plod through so many unenjoyable hours. It's still good, on balance, but "balance" is the operative word. This is a 9/10 game whipped together with a 5/10 game.

This is a beautiful and deep game, with multiple endings, lots of side content and fantastic critique of human culture and society, while being quite fun to play. the combat is slick, smooth and mechanically sound. It's not DMC4, but each type of weapon does have its own moveset. I do wish for more moves, as it gets repetitive very quickly. Some of the side missions also are frustrating and unrewarding. The RPG-esque Chip system is a fun way to tweak your experience and try out some silly playstyles. The story is fantastic and self contained, but ties into other Yoko Taro's work, if you have played Nier or Drakengard. the characters are fantastic, with depth and terrific voice acting to back up their struggle and story. However, you can run the risk of over levelling yourself like crazy, but that's the problem of many RPG hack n slashers. you can perfect dodge everything with skill, or just be a clown with 4x more health than the enemy. You set your difficulty accordingly, so those looking for a challenge should limit themselves.

However, Square Enix has decided that this game doesn't need a good port, and unfortunately comes it many, many problems. 1080p and above doesn't work properly, forcing a bordered 720p image and creating a blurry mess. The game also locks itself improperly to 30 FPS all the time. fullscreen doesn't work correctly, and the game is poorly optimized. Digital Foundry on youtube has a much better explanation on the problems of the PC port.
HOWEVER, there is a fix, one that solves all of these problems and makes the game a fantastic experience. Kaldaien's Special K mod for Nier:Automata fixes many of the games' problems while also allowing even higher quality options for those with an extra beefy rig.

This game is worth it. i want to give it a 9 or even maybe a 10.However, it is currently broken on Steam and therefore does not gain my approval for anything higher than a 7. Fan-made mods do not change my score, as it is not part of the product.

TL:DR grab it on sale, google the fan made patch, have fun.

This game takes place after Nier, though this is a spin off, there are nods to the past game here// but other than to appreciate those moments, playing the past games is unnecessary..
This continues the human vs robot war in a post-apocalyptic open world where robots are beginning to feel emotion…
2B and 9S have an endearing relationship here... 2B being programmed to be more calm and composed, while 9s is more emotional…
Leads for some great moments and dialog in the game,, its just a shame theyre so few and far between because watching their growth is the best part of the game..
The game takes around 8 hours to complete… though there are multiple endings and perspectives the game shows you if you’re interested in checking them out...
After playing through Automata the first time though... I was fine with that ending being my final ending…
Because unfortunately neither the story nor the world enticed me enough to want to play again
The world is tiny, dull, colorless, lifeless, not fun to explore…
And the entire 8 hour journey is spent revisiting all of these locations over and over…
There were very few moments I thought wow... this game is beautiful or this section is really cool…
It looks and feels generic throughout…
I did enjoy the fact that the camera is constantly pulling in and out, changing game perspective, to where at times the game feels like a 2d platformer.. I just wish more was done with it than give us the typical grey and brown rusty structures to run through…
For the most part you get a task, go to the location on the map, turn in your progress, go to a different location... fight a boss that all but maybe 2 are just spongier hack and slash battles… rinse and repeat…
The world feels connected… but back to the point that it feels generic…
Nothing feels like you haven’t seen it before…
Making your journey back and forth feel like a drag…
the combat here is fairly fun… I wouldn’t necessarily call it satisfying though…
Not much to it other than light and heavy attacks…
You can find new weapons in the world and upgrade them with the parts and materials you find in the world and off of robots to make the battle grind a little quicker…
but much like the world... the combat was just there. It was good… the world is good... but again, never felt fun to me… just existing
plus there’s a setting in the game where all you have to do is move your character... The game does the attacking for you…
Almost turning this into a twin stick shooter hack and slash game if you want…
I dipped my toes in both styles
but after fighting enemies that all felt the same over and over... I actually started to prefer the autopilot mode.
I’m sorry, I know this dislikes are coming... I’m in the minority here…
But I don’t see the upper 8s and 9s this game is getting by everyone else
Nier Automata has great characters in B2 and 9S...
But the story of these robots feeling emotion is never told in an impactful way…
the world is no fun to explore..
the bosses feel uninspired and the combat is just there…
This is a good game, I had fun…
    you won’t regret playing through…
but I don’t honestly believe you’re missing anything if you choose to skip this one…
    I give Nier Automata

    --> Strengths:

    . Soundtrack

    . Potential for hentai ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    . Plot twists

. It has philosophical elements that can lead the player to become interested in that área.

. Good interaction of typical tech settings with characters. Ex: increase memory, upgrade parts, etc.

    --> Negative Points:

. Shallow philosophy [i have major degree in philosophy and i tell you that. Take some phrases from Sartre and put it in the game doesnt make it philosophical].

. Hack mini game. It looks like it was created in the 90's and it has a design error within it. Spinning is
    different from moving sideways.

. Even those who played the predecessor game (NIER) have many doubts about the plot. Why do humans create a species that has the same problems as they? Ex: anxiety, emotions, etc.

. Absurd concepts. 1) Baby machines (machines are ready-made, the concept of biological development only apllies for those how were born, not "ready-made”); 2) Red fluids "blood" in machines/androids. Why they would spend time and resources to introduce red cells in machines that dont need red “ink” to transport O2 through a body.

. Excessive reuse of assets. There are 5 serious endings and at least 25 hours of gameplay in the same 4-5 scenarios.

The setting is an open world, so there's a lot of landscape to explore, but I can't say there's too many interesting points of interests around. Neither did I have incentive to do much side missions because they felt rather repetitive. Though the areas you visit during the main campaign are very cool. I really like the apocalyptic world they created.

The story is captivating, and keeps you hooked to see how it plays out. Seeing the protagonists progress along their story is interesting. If you don't like the regular ending, there's actually 26 more to unlock, which is an absolute overkill in my opinion. I felt this was a negative for me. I wanted more questions answered after the first play through, but realized I needed to replay it at least 3 times to get the explanations I wanted, and I simply don't have time for that. Plus the extra playthroughs overlap a lot meaning you'll see a lot of the same cutscenes and gameplay.

Overall, the game is a fun hack and slash, with a decent story as well. If you want the full story and experience, you'll definitely have to playthrough the game multiple times though.

While I do like the game, the game ultimately left me unsatisfied due to a lack of focus on the main draw of this game; the combat. Throughout my experience I was equally enjoying myself as well as irritated.

The game tries to hybrid a fast paced action game with RPG elements, but ultimately the RPG elements feel like they detract from the combat IMO.

+It's fun to string together heavy and light attacks and timing your dodges. It very fast, allowing you to skirt around your enemies and launching attacks from nearly any available angle. It's not very hard arguably. Most of the fun comes from perfecting your attacks, timing your dodges and stringing combos.
+The story is relatively entertaining and leaves a strong impression with a lot of people. It is a layered story, where the more you progress through the game, the more past story beats are contextualized and given meaning. The story especially towards the end can rouse an emotional reaction.
+It controls quiet well. There is a sense of fluidity and seamlessness as you weave in and out of combat.
+It's premise is at its core themed around existentialism, which can be interesting if your into that topic.
+Side quests generally expand the scope of the game's story and theme. Sometimes they can be a bit annoying or arbitrarily gatekeep you with level requirements.

-The game just doesn't feel as satisfying as i thought it would. It does a lot of things but doesn't truly commit to one. It likes to combine elements from different genres, such as RPG's but also occasionally bullet hells and sidescrollers/top down type of games by forcing the camera. While the premise is cute, it ultimately feels just like a distraction from the games core gameplay (which is also the most rewarding); the melee action.
-Forced perspectives, while occasionally cute are mostly just annoying, especially if they make a combat encounter harder (Robot singer boss fight and Jackass's fight experiments are good examples). The game doesn't need them.
-Playing as 9S sucks. He doesn't have a heavy attack, instead an OP hacking minigame, meaning you lose a lot of the fluidity and grace of playing as 2B/A2. Your left with mostly just spamming light attack or hacking if the enemy has too much health. It's boring and a downgrade gameplay wise to play as him.
-The open world is really small. You are going to retread through a lot of the same environment. It is also quiet bland in a way, but i guess that is typical of many Japanese games. Overdesigned main characters in an underdesigned environment. Even the enemies are just literal tincans with appendages and dots for eyes.
-There is not a lot of enemy variety and their attacks patterns are really simplistic.
-A2 as a character could have been more developed.
-The difficulty settings are quiet strange. Normal difficulty is almost too easy while hard is way too hard strangely enough. On normal you'll barely take any damage from getting hit while on hard you'll get one-shot by almost any attack that isn't meant to be pathetically weak. It's quiet jarring.
-The PC port of this game could be better. Certain issues you could have with the game could require mods to solve.

This is a good game experience mired with irritations. I feel like the core gameplay and general feel of this game would benefit greatly from a more honed focus on doing one type of gameplay well instead of what we have now, where it feels like there is a good game with a lot of **** stapled on. I whish it was a more consistent experience. I like the fluidity of movement and combat and the gradual progression through the experience is somewhat satisfying.

It is a good game but it is not as good as they say. It's an above average anime romp with maid outfits.

Buy this game only if you are a weeb and open to a more experimental experience. It helps to be open minded when going into this game. It does not deliver as a action game in a satisfying way ultimately but there is still some fun to be had. Its current asking price is fair. If you just like a good story then you can't go wrong if you have the time to spare (Ca. 25-30 hours including side quests). Ultimately I left this game dissatisfied and slightly enraged. Not because it was a bad game perhaps, but because of the lost potential and all of the over-the-top glowing reviews that seem to gloss over it's flaws.

Nier: Automata is an action-RPG/shoot ‘em up (no, really) featuring ridiculously human robots fighting an endless war against machines created by aliens, in the hopes of defending the remnants of humanity from destruction.

    Or is it?

Nier: Automata is a game full of plot twists, though some are rather predictable, as well as a number of big epic moments and a lot of attempts to pull on the player’s heartstrings, with varying degrees of success. Featuring three protagonists and almost two-dozen joke endings, as well as a couple of real ones, this is a game which goes on well past its welcome, and then some.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

As an action RPG, this game has a fairly reasonable set of mechanics on the surface – you can run around shooting at enemies with your pod, a floating machine which follows you around, or cut them up in close combat with various weapons – spears, short swords, large swords, and gauntlets. Each class of weapon has its own attack pattern, and two of the characters can wield two weapons at the same time, allowing them to combo the weapons together, while the third character has a hacking ability which causes them to play a brief shoot-em-up game to deal their opponent damage.

Unfortunately, while these mechanics all sound well and good, it quickly becomes clear that the game doesn’t really work mechanically. The abundance of healing items means that you can pretty easily prevent your death by simply using them at will, and you get “plug-in chips” which can include various abilities to give yourself more hit points or regenerate by killing enemies, dealing damage, or simply standing around without taking damage. Given you can deal damage from range, it is pretty easy to kite most enemies around, and it is very easy to either be underleveled for the content (which makes it take a while to wear down enemies) or overlevelled (which trivializes the combat even more, though it is not actually all that hard to take down enemies even 20 levels above your own, though it is tedious to do so). There is a crafting system based on combining the plug-in chips into better versions of themselves, as well as upgrading the weapons and pods to deal more damage, and gathering the materials for such can become rather tedious, doubly so as you must upgrade all your weapons to the maximum level to face the optional (and hardest) boss in the game.

Alas, the game’s enemy variety leaves something to be desired; there’s maybe a couple dozen kinds of enemies in the game apart from bosses, but most of them are fundamentally either “stab you in close combat” or “shoot you from range”. Most of the machine lifeforms are slow and clunky, making for pretty samey combat and making it easy to simply run around kiting them and shooting them to death while avoiding their slow projectiles. By the first time you’ve beaten the game, you will likely be tired of the normal enemies, but don’t worry – you’ll get to fight them even more later on!

Because, you see, this game has an interesting definition of “beating” it. The first time you beat the game, it coyly encourages you to keep playing… at which point, you start the game over, except from the perspective of your sidekick character. This means that most of the content you experience will be the same, with only the beginning and end really differing, though you get even more tedious side-quests on his route (and the opportunity to finish up any you failed to finish the first time through).

Once you beat the game the second time through, and see ending, the game ends with a screen seeming to promise a sequel… but it is not, it is actually the other two endings of the game, which you get through by playing through the game a third time, though this time, instead of replaying the first half of the game, instead you’re actually playing all-new content which you could only access by effectively playing the first half of the game twice. Joy.

If this game was nothing but the main story, and if it cut out a lot of the RPG mechanics, it would actually be a lot more interesting – the bosses are, on the whole, of fairly interesting design, and the core story is fairly decent, even if some of the characters you’re supposed to care about feel a bit underchracterized in the anime sort of way, where they suddenly get some focus right before they die. The second half of the game focuses half on a character who previously had gotten almost no focus at all, which feels kind of weird, and while by the end you do care about her, it ends up feeling less than tight in terms of writing. I would have liked to care a lot more about a lot of the characters, but they don’t get enough screen time for it, despite the game's 50 hours of run time.

My advice? Skip it unless you've got a lot of free time on your hands. The high points are good, but you have to wade through a lot of junk to get there.

I also hate the camera sooooo much, it forces you to look at 2b's underwear like a pevert all the time. I keep making the camera look at it from behind or slightly above but it keeps looking at her underwear from bottom to top. I can say that 2b is a huge waifu bait :|
The combat is boring and when you play as the cute guy robot it gets even more insanely boring.

Nier tries to be deep by naming characters after famous philosophers and does not do anything with it. Narrative tries to explore the theme of humanity but it drops the ball by making all the characters human. Yes they are humans, They might say they are androids or machines or whatever. But make no mistake they are humans. There is nothing alien or artificial about them, We have a typical teenage boy. A typical "grizzled old cop" in form of 2B (God I cringe every time her name is uttered. Yeah really deep developer "too be or not to be" I never heard that one before), it is an equivalent of artist stripping naked covering themselves in honey and fecal matter, yelling to high heavens "Look at how deep I am. Pay attention to me I am an artist. I am an artist". This makes the story shallow and cringy but it would be bearable if the game did not put the focus on it. As it is it comes out as condescending treating the player as a dumb peasant that "just would not get it if we do not hammer it in".
in short if you care about silly things like story do not buy it. if you want a pretty spectacle with awesome music buy it. Also buy OST it is worth every penny. if you find yourself skipping dialog and cut-scenes do not feel bad. Everything uttered out of characters mouths is garbage. Make your own story. I guarantee it will be better.

My god, what a B**** this game was to get working well on PC. Gotta mod the heck out of it.

Unfortunately the raving reviews got my expectations way too high for this game. It's nowhere near as good as people are claiming.

    Good:
    Sexy android.

    Bad:
The male android costume is the polar opposite of the female one. It's ugly as hell.

Stupid lack of save function made me have to replay the first hour of the game multiple times. It also makes it really annoying to tweak and mod the game since you have to play through a good amount of the game before you can get to a section where you can test stuff. And you have to do that over and over.

    Tediously long boss fights.

The combat isn't particularly appealing. Clanging metal on metal rarely is. The only motivation I have to engage enemies is to level up. Dull. It's frequently mindless, repetitive, and monotonous. And even leveling up isn't rewarding. Nothing significant seems to occur when you gain a level.

You get a partner at one point and their outfit is very similar to yours, to the point where it's confusing to be able to tell what character you're controlling during some battles. And even more so when they throw in an enemy that also looks extremely similar.

Another part of the game you're given a different companion and it positions itself between your character and the 3rd party camera, thus blocking your view of your character. Ridiculous.

Enemies drop items during fights, but those items disappear pretty quickly, so you have to concentrate on both fighting and picking stuff up at the same time. Annoying and dumb.

For some unapparent reason there's a mouse cursor visible all the time, even after disabling a second one with a mod. And during some parts of the game where you're in a flying combat unit the crosshair it gives you is not highly visible and easily lost track of.

In other fights it's just pure visual chaos, to the point where you have no idea what's going on.

At first the way it would lock your camera, switch angles, and remove control from you was just slightly annoying, but then it did it during a fight at it was absolutely awful.

Then some stupid hacking mechanism continually popping up during a boss battle.

Navigation and map system is awful. It's very hard to figure out where to go based on the map, and I have to press multiple keys and buttons to get to the map. It's very tedious. Fast travel doesn't unlock till late in the game after you've already had to run back and forth long distances. And it's got nothing to do with realism either, because there are many things about the game that don't even attempt to be realistic. So they just make you run back and forth long distances for no reason. And then at the end of the game they want you to play through the whole thing again to see another ending?! Ha! Yeah right!

There's a part of the game where I need to get to the top of a tall building. I spend a minute climbing a ladder the whole way up only to find out there is no access to the top via the ladder. This game is awful.

The item system is very unintuitive. I mostly just ignored it. They don't tell you what anything is or what anything does. You have to look it all up online. Ridiculous.

They make you press a button to pick up items even though you'll want/need to pick them all up. There are no items you don't need/want to pick up.

There are regular times where I'm left with no quests and no markers of where to go, and I have to look up online what I'm supposed to do next. And it's not like it's an open world where you can choose what to do. No, there's only one thing for you to do, they just won't tell you what it is.

I had a bunch of active quests, but apparently I triggered some unobvious point in the storyline and all the quests went away. The game seems designed so that you have to do all side quests as soon as you get them.

There are major items and upgrades that you would only find either by luck or by learning about it on the internet.

The production value is fairly mediocre. Many of the characters you interact with don't even have speech, you have to read the text conversation.

The world visuals aren't appealing, so I don't find enjoyment in exploring and discovering new areas. Most of the game takes place in a few areas that you keep going back to.

I see people praising the story, but even as an avid science fiction reader I don't find it particularly good. The android characters continually make nonsensical statements about other robots' mental capacity, as if they are drastically different from the androids, even though androids are simply robots in a humanoid body. After watching a full playthrough of the game, there seems to be a number of plot holes.

The people saying this game is 10/10 are out of their dam minds.

Would like to put 10 points. The game has many cool aspects: fighting, locations, soundtrack, 2B herself. But the story is so depressive, that it breaks any good impressions. I just don't get why players and game creators like those negative emotions so much. All those tears, screams, deaths. Is their life so happy and carefree that they want to see some depressive content at least in the game?

I have completed NieR: Automata and am at a loss. Why is everyone praising this game so much? Why such high marks?

Very difficult start to the game, no way to save progress. And this is a very controversial decision, since further the game is quite simple at the standard difficulty level. Then I died in the game only twice. What's more: monotonous and boring opponents, pointless camera

What's more: monotonous and boring opponents, pointless camera changes, dull gameplay.
But the most important thing is the plot. I kept waiting for it to become interesting. When there are interesting turns or memorable characters. After all, everyone praised the plot so much ... But I never got anything interesting.
As I understand it, everyone just liked the main character in the game in a short skirt. Because there is nothing else in this game.
    Dull gameplay, boring plot.

The behaviour of your faction or some enemy figures and the whole gameworld does not really make sense to me.

-Decent soundtrack though some of them (forest theme) got on my nerves.
-Neat genre mixing in the combat and twin stick shooter hacking segments.
-Reasonable graphics and good character designs.

    Cons:
-3/4 of the game is basically a prologue for the actual story to start (route c).
-One of the worst stories ever put into a video game.
-The worst story pacing of any game I've ever played.
-Mediocre, poorly balanced combat. You can play on Normal where it's impossible to die or Hard where you have to use some plug-ins and then it's impossible to die. Or you can play on masochist, die-in-one-hit no matter what you do Very Hard. Unlimited use of healing items is a serious problem.
-Repetitive combat and some of the worst, most boring side quests ever.
-Tiny, open empty world with little to explore. There are only 4 main zones and 2 "towns", you visit them all in the first 10 hours. Enjoy running around the same areas again and again for the next 25 hours.
    -Bad voice acting.
    -60 FPS lock.

My advice if you want to try the game: Skip ALL of the side quests and optional content and just finish the main story. It would have been a much more tolerable game at ~20 hours. Regardless Nier: Automata may in fact be one of the singular worst games I've ever played that wasn't mechanically broken, horrible buggy, or blatantly unfinished.

    - No skill tree, so you lvl up and can't do a s**t with that, it just add status to your character
    - Locked at 60 fps and still horrible stuttering when moving around the map or in combat
    - The worst point is that after some hours of gameplay the game starts getting boring, repetitive, and with no skill tree I lose motivation for killing machines
    - Secondary missions are (again) repetitive and simple
    - Graphics are simply not good, there are tons of games with 5+ years old and they look much better, and the colors in this game are bad

So, maybe it's a good game for people that's new in this kind of game or PC gaming (mainly for the fps cap and graphics, oh and the frame drops) but not for other people, especially when a game gets boring, because It is the opposite of what you are looking for in a game.

Note that you can upgrade your weapons and add chips to your body, improving status and getting some abilities, but even then I feel like I was playing the same battles again and again. Just my point of view.

The first portion of the game up until defeating the first boss, i had to use my melee attack a massive 3 times, and those 3 swings were during the boss battle, for the first portion of the game i could have used electrical tape to hold down my L1 button and not had my experience diminished

Graphically speaking the game is ok i guess, as a PC gamer its hard to be "impressed" by graphical quality that you've seen in numerous places before, level design was pretty bland for the section i played but i apreciate that this is mostly a tutorial section, that being said its all you had to win me over and it didn't, and thats before you mention the horrid 30FPS during cutscenes, what is this, 2006?

Audio, the music, what little i've heard was fairly decent, noting stood out as bad and the sound effects seemed ok, someone actually put some work in to that so i'm impressed, the voice acting, well i get that they are robots but even for robots the acting was bland, i couldn't tell if it was just the voice actors being bored or not

Gameplay, having only experienced the first section of the game i can't comment on the rest, but it must have changed genre about 6 times, there was 3rd person, top down, sode scrolling shooter, vertical shooter, twin stick shooter and platformer that i counted, the constant changes between genres was jarring, on top of that it didn't really do any of them particularly well, it wasn't engaging and it makes it feel like nobody could settle on what this game was meant to be

All in all i would probably give this game a 5 out of 10, if you can pick it up for cheap during the christmas sale then its alright, but at £40 i expect a little more, although considering square-enixs love of mediocre games recently, i can't say i'm overly surprised

If you like constant transitions between genres and generic gameplay then you might enjoy this game, if you're expecting something more engaging then you probably should look elsewhere
