  1. Mask of the Betrayer delivers on all fronts: tactical battles, exceptional story, and great characters. It’s truly remarkable how far NWN 2 has come. It’s not perfect, but as far as I’m concerned the smooth execution and excellent new content in this expansion make this the best electronic D&D experience since "Baldur’s Gate II."
  2. The addition of dark powers broadens the depth of the game and blends perfectly with the storyline.

Shares most of the same flaws and virtues than its predecessor. The story starts off a bit too slow and the constant need for spirit energy can be a pain at times, but the pace picks up nicely towards the end. There's tons of stuff to do and in that regard Mask feels more like a completely new sequel than just a normal expansion pack. [Nov 2007]
  4. An eerie, enthralling role-playing game that never settles for a cliché.

Unfortunately, the camera problems from NWN 2 are still here.
  6. The game plays well but you should have at least a decent computer to play the game on medium settings.

Even with significant flaws, it's still easily the best D&D game I've played since the power-duo of Baldur's Gate II and Planescape: Torment.

RPGs are at their strongest when they create a world of wonder and intrigue with strong and interesting characters to discover and explore, RPGs are at their strongest when they create a world of wonder and intrigue with strong and interesting characters to discover and explore, and Mask of the Betrayer does this with a mastery that is seen in only a handful of the genre's best games. From shadow planes to dream walking to soul eating to dead gods, Mask of the Betrayer is enthralling. Expand

It has a fascinating story, a new mechanic that forces you to chose a path, an ensemble of good characters and a lot of choices. It is set in the D&D Forgotten Realms in the region Rashemen shortly after the culmination of the main game where you saved the day. Your hero awakens in an underground chamber without knowing how he got there and meets the female Red Thay Wizard Safiya. However something strange seem to happen to him as an unfamiliar power resides within his / her body. Here I stop to avoid spoilers. The story is fascinating with good twists and multiple outcomes depending on your choices. Yes your choices matter and there a different paths and very different outcomes. To be fair you see that this was a DLC as it is a bit limited in length but full of quality writing. Like I said this should have been developed as main game. Gameplay wise it is using the 3,5 rules of D&D and adds new races, classes and a lot of feats to the main games portfolio. While you have challenging battles you get also puzzles aka riddles. I like for example the challenge of searching a loophole in a devilish bargain. You can recruit of cause a party of companions but beware those have their own values, goals and worldviews. If you anger them they will leave. Also if I remember correctly 2 are missable. I have no complains game play wise and while I am at it had no noteworthy bugs. Presentation wise the games graphics aged a bit but I cant hold this against an older game. I liked the art style however and the soundtrack is fitting. Overall I give a 9/10 and would say if this was developed as the main game it would be a classic. The limitations are sadly valid but I would sing the games praise and recommend it for D&D fans. You'll also like it best if you can carry over your character from the base game. Mask of the Betrayer has a constant background noise of you dying outright if you don't manipulate the confounding problem right. You survived the endgame of the first installment, but only at a price. That said, you can finally ascend into epic levels, not a common thing in D&D e-games.

    PROS:
    -D&D 3.5 character creation/play
    -the story
    -the turmoil/tension
    -companions
-epic levels for an already well-worn character (or try something new, your choice)

    CONS:
-figuring out how to manipulate the potentially lethal problem you wake up with can be a challenge
-listening to the hag in the maze on repeat (you'll understand when you get there)
-companions from the first game are gone, no they cannot join your party again
-finding a rogue is difficult unless you are one
-it ends here, the other game releases under the NWN2 title are crap, especially SoZ
