For a game with such a heavy emphasis on medieval combat, Mount & Blade is just shy of perfection.

A Medieval action RPG with a great battle system, and there are many ways you can play the game. The game doesn't have a storyline, which is why it becomes a bit boring and pointless after a while, but it does have many good mods and they will keep the game fresh. [Sept 2008]

Medieval warfare just got even trendier and, despite several major deficiencies, Mount & Blade has just too many memorable moments of glory to ignore; the price tag is worth it for the sunsets alone.
  4. Considering its lackluster visuals, Mount and Blade is suprisingly addictive. The combination of exhilarating mounted combat and an open sandbox world will keep players coming back for more.
  5. Mount & Blade's strong RPG elements, in-depth army management aspects, and amazingly addictive combat system balance out its mediocre quests and half-baked sandbox gameplay.

A decent ride until you get off. [Dec 2008, p.72]
  7. The most exciting feature is the mounted battle, because it is demanding and fast. Release the mouse button at the right moment to hit an enemy. If you ride faster, you will do more damage.

This is hands down one of the best indie games on the pc.
The heart of the game is the combat, and that is where the game shines. There have been quite a few games that have tried mounts and mounted combat and still to t his day Mount and Blade is the only one that imo has done it any justice.
Understanding that this game is from a small up start dev team (It started with just two people) you can't expect to have modern day graphics but over time they have provided some good graphical updates since it started.
The developers are still updating and working on the game and plan in the future for multiplayer support.

The excitement of riding into battle knowing that all it takes are 2 or 3 "lucky" hits from your opponents to take you out is unparalelled. The castle siege is bland, indeed. I mean, who in their right mind would attack a castle with just one siege tower or ladder? To the complaints about this however. You call yourself gamers, but can't adapt to a simple challenge that a game offers to you? Maybe try using your head a bit. You know, charging up that ladder headlessly isn't the only option - here's a tip: get a force weighted towards archers, tell them to hold position, get a crossbow / bow yourself, shoot down most of the defending army's archery force and THEN storm the walls. I guarantee, you won't be slaughtered like ducks then. I reckon most of those who gave this game a bad review didn't even try to work around it's flaws, while it's entirely possible. I recommend! Don't expect pretty graphics or a compelling storyline, but if you're into realistic medieval combat this is the Game you are looking for.
I would give it a 10/10 but M&B:Warband is even better and i'm missing a multiplayer mode which allows you not only to play the combat but also a campaign in coop.

The developers of this game seem to think that making a game is simply to create a simple engine without deep thoughts into the details which are so important. Ever seen horsemen climb steep rocky mountain terrain before? Here you will. Ever seen how developers get lazy at listening to your own ideas of a game you'd want to play and slack off when releasing an unfinished game? Here you will. If you never played a single game in your life, you might like this game because you have zero experience in game. If you've been a gamer for most of your life, you'll find that Mount and Blade just plain sucks. It does not deliver what it promises. Expand
