Not even the basic shooting of Moss Destruction can hang, even in the best case scenario. And when the core is a bit rotten, that’s not a good sign.

At first glance the game may look quite plain and simple, but giving it some time one will soon realize that Moss Destruction has a deeper system than what its looks would suggest:

a complex and well structured ranking up system enables the player to gain XP on each level for enemies killed. If enough XP was gained and the player ranked up (they allow you to gain 2 ranks in a level) he or she can install so called Mech Techs, which are actually very funny but useful upgrades. The more rank you gained, the more of these you can install.

Gameplay experience may also change because of what the game calls Alien Tech Shards. These are modifiers and items the player can collect on the levels in a 2 slot inventory, but the effect of each of these is unknown at first with each new run. Once used, it will reveal its positive or negative effect and will remain revealed if picked up again.

There is also a third way to upgrade characters in the game and that is through the in game shop. One can quite easily find the "secret" shop in each level, where the merchant will have 3 randomized items for sale. The player can pay for these with Krysols, the strange crystal currency of this world. Here one can buy active, passive and global cartridges. global cartridges will alter the gameplay as a whole from the point of purchase, while active and passive cartridges can get installed at the beginning of each run. New playable characters can also be bought here.

The game is in early access yet, but the devs are planning on adding new world, weapons, upgrades and a couch co-op mode. I would happily recommend Moss Destruction for anyone who loves the genre, with its neat artstyle and bold humor it surely does stand out from the category.
