We’ll take you back to the glorious 1990s, the days of arcades and tokens, of hidden Fatalities and secret characters, with the original versions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. But we’re not stopping there - many of the home versions of these games from vintage 16-bit consoles and, yes, even handheld systems are also included. And the arcade and console games can all be played online with rollback netcode. We’re also doing a deep dive into the history of Mortal Kombat to find design documents, early prototype materials, motion-capture sessions, concept art, and much more, some never before seen. You’ll be able to step through our interactive timelines as if you were walking through a Mortal Kombat museum, watching videos, playing games, viewing photo galleries, and more as you travel through the early history of the franchise. The fight is calling in Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, promising a Kollection of Klassics that prove to be the ultimate way to Test One’s Might.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is a love letter to longtime fans of the franchise and a great entry point for newcomers who’ve only experienced the recent titles. Digital Eclipse has delivered a series of upgrades across most versions, including online multiplayer and new accessibility options for executing moves and fatalities—making the experience smoother and more enjoyable for all players.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is not only a great round-up of the franchise's earliest hits, it’s also a tremendous history lesson on the building of a fighting game franchise that remains influential today. I do wish the compilation covered more of the noticeable gaps in time toward the end, and that there were further efforts to tweak the tuning of some infamously imbalanced enemy AI. Even still, the Legacy Kollection is a great package that offers the best way to play classic Mortal Kombat and learn about both the series itself and the people who made it.

Your assessment of Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection is going to depend on what kind of player you are. If you're the ultra-competitive type who wants more than local fights, you'll be disappointed. The splintering of online play and lack of lobbies means that trying to find a game is needlessly painful, and with lobbies still in a beta state as of the time of this writing, it'll take longer than expected to get a PC-only community going for this compilation. If you're a more casual player or prefer local play, then the recent fixes to controller latency make this a very enjoyable experience all around. The solo campaign still feels grueling due to an unflinching difficulty level. The historical content and game library make this a great pick-up for those who love game history. If you just want to play the games offline, you'll greatly enjoy this experience.

A great museum-style collection and a nostalgic time capsule for fans, but a few small shortcomings - along with a disastrous online mode - make this release better suited for casual players and collectors than for the hardcore Mortal Kombat crowd.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection contains some of the greatest and most iconic games in the Mortal Kombat franchise! These were the games that put the series on the map, challenged censorship, and paved the way for other fighting games. Despite the games being fantastic, the selection of titles feels bloated and unnecessary, while the features, while good, seem like an average offering.

As the MK3 arcade cabinet once said, there is no knowledge that is not power. With everything Digital Eclipse packed into the collection, there's a lot of power to be had. [Review in Progress; Provisional Score = 90]
