Shang was accompanied by Prince Goro, a warrior of the Shokan race (a four-armed half-human / half-dragon). Knowing that if ten tournaments in a row were won by the Outworld champion, the Earth Realm would be conquered by evil and fall into darkness, Shang entered Goro in the tournament and had him defeat the great Kung Lao. Goro has been reigning supreme as the undefeated fighting champion for five hundred years now. As the last tournament required draws near, Raiden, Thunder God and protector of the Earth Realm, enacts a plan to tip the scales in the humans' favor, Seven fighters step into the arena on Shang Tsung's mysterious island: Shaolin warrior Liu Kang, Special Forces operative Sonya Blade, the mercenary thug Kano, fame-seeking actor Johnny Cage, the ice-wielding Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero and his undead adversary Scorpion, and Raiden himself.

As an always-PC-user, this was the definitive fighting game for me, when I was a kid.
We played it at high-school against each other on a single keyboard and laughed our asses off, when we tricked each other.
From an adult's perspective, this game is insanely violent, bloody and brutal.
From the kid's perspective, the first one was like the best fighting game, because Street Fighter was really less "life-like" and basically a console title.
In comparison to the Street Fighter series, Mortal Kombat introduced the fatality "system" that in the sequels has been expanded with "babality" (you could turn the opponent into their 'newborn' state) and "friendship" (it was lovely, instead of exterminating the opponent, your character gave a gift to your enemy!).
The sequels to the first game introduced more characters and more moves, sometimes with better animations, some playing modes. In short: bigger-better.
I remember there were some achievements so you could unlock hidden features and also "cheat" codes to unlock other hidden features, so it really is not cheating, but revealing hidden/secret functions.

There was a story mode, but really, just forget it, like "evil comes, so let's kill all the bad guys"...

9/10 may be way too high for a Street Fighter clone, but Mortal Kombat raised the bar pretty high in spite of its utterly primitive story.
