My only complaint about Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road is that there isn’t more of it, and for under $10, they have already provided dozens of hours of content. Addictive and replayable, with a killer soundtrack to go with it.

Monsters are Coming! Rock and Road is your next new Survivors obsession, with a clever tower defence twist and that “just one more run" hook.

Sprinkling tower defence strategising on top of an addicting roguelike bullet-hell proves a stroke of genius for Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road. Fantastic persistent and in-game upgrades that keep the gameplay fresh, a vibrant and playful art style and excellent bullet hell mechanics make this an absolute blast, especially on Steam Deck. While it does struggle with some repetition in environments and a grinding bottleneck, it'll be hard not to spot this entertaining monster coming over the hill.

Monsters Are Coming! Rock and Road is a fun riff on various run-based subgenres, building itself upon the foundations of roguelite, bullet heaven and tower defence, slapping some wheels on the corners and seeing how far it can go.

Monsters Are Coming! Rock and Road is a solid addition to the never-ending bullet-heaven/rogue-lite/survivors-like (yeesh) genre. It looks nice, plays well, and has at least one bopping track to help carry it through a series of runs that are only let down by some punitive progression requirements.

Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road is an easy recommendation for gamers seeking a light, quirky experience built for short play sessions. It’s cheap, runs well across platforms, and offers solid, simple gameplay—though its repetition, awkward meta-progression, and lack of standout strengths keep it from knighting itself as the castle’s noble defender. Still, it’s fort-tastic fun if you jump in with the right mindset and a bit of time management.

It is not a bad idea. It is just unfinished in spirit, like a proof of concept that made it out the door too early. With more time and clearer direction, this could have landed. As it stands, it just doesn’t.
