Metallic Child is a roguelike action game with the unique twist of temporary upgrades. While definitely a game of high quality, the lack of new enemy types in later stages of the game makes the gradation of difficulty feel unbalanced.

At the end of the day, quibbles about music or visuals or story are kind of secondary to this particular game. This is a title that is an amalgamation of two separate game types that both rely heavily on their gameplay to be pleasurable… and to its credit, Metallic Child really nails that part of the formula. It manages to be fun without feeling formulaic, and it even kept alive that sense of always struggling just a little further in the hopes of clearing a run even when things felt less than promising early on. That’s a sign that something is working right. Of course, none of that is to say that the game wouldn’t be better with a better story or better environments or any of that; just that what it needs to get right it does very right, so much that it elevates the game beyond what could have been a rather bare-bones presentation to be quite a good title. If you like the idea of flinging around robots and unlocking weapons from defeated bosses, you should definitely give this one a go.

Metallic Child is a rogue-lite with a grand narrative of saving Earth through some truly addicting action systems. The fast-moving structure of dungeon exploration is complemented by engaging combat mechanics and ever-changing challenges. The challenge becomes easier to manage in the later hours. Still, the repetitive gameloop weighs on the experience if you aren’t in the mood for lengthy dialogue and cheesing your way through encounters using the same combos.

The art and style combine Megaman sensibilities and other Nintendo and Capcom classicness but the gameplay generally doesn't. The formula is to play through 3 levels (was 4 levels previously, last stage has 4 still) of top down combat to face a unique boss and then go back to the base for some upgrades and story progression. Also when I say combat I mean forced combat, no running through.

Personally I wish they also used a Megaman-like or other classic level system, but instead it's the typical modern type that of system that gives you 1 life and a lot of randomness on your journey through several stages and a boss (a rogue lite or whatever). Healing items feel absolutely imbalanced and random, I got through one stage by having a powerup that gives 10 life after every fight. The first few levels feel a little too easy on easy mode and a little too hard on normal mode. I recommend at least one on easy mode to get a feel for it without the dumb restarting all the time. Progression mechanics and builds seemed poor or unremarkable. I didn't like the cosmetics = upgrades bit.

Weapons are dull but I didn't see them all. The general progression through levels feels very long and slow with room after room of the same semi-easy enemies, the game only being hard because you need to not get chipped away at. Fixing that war of attrition style gameplay would go a long way, maybe have a healing skill. But that's not how rogue-lites are generally.

Enough griping though, this is not a bad example of the genre. It is hard enough and long enough, graphics (the 2d sprites at least) are fun and cute. The flash arcade atmosphere will appeal to some. There are breaks from the normal gameplay like bike levels. The mechanics like grab to throw also blocking are cool. It's worth having some fun with, just don't beat yourself up if you tire of it quickly.
