Terrible face animation, stupid plot, stupid protagonist, stupid antagonist, stupid NPCs, stupid gameplay. Authors don't appreciate the Mass Effect's universe and don't know anything about space fiction. One of the worst AAA games ever made.

Maybe the worst AAA game of this year. Unbelievably repetitive, terrible voice acting, terrible character models. Better burn your money than buying it in that state.-

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this game is just weird in too many ways. Bioware claimed they learned from the complaints about DA:I yet they included more fetch and go there quests than ever. Now if this is your thing, you can probably look at it as a positive because there are really loads of them, dozens upon dozens. Yet in the age of Witcher 3 in which even the smallest quest had a good story and often times good and satisfying mechanics this is just outdated and this style of MMO quests is what a lot of people complained about with DA:I so:

    - loads of fetch quests
    + loads of fetch quests

Weirdly enough the game looks very much worse in many ways than DA:I, especially when it comes to facial animations, environment, movement etc. It also performs much less well even though EA has loads of experience with the Frostbite Engine (DA:I, FIFA 17) and all those games look quite good and perform very well even on low end systems. On the flipside, if you do have a really good system this game can and will look absolutely stunning HOWEVER most people simply don't own a system like that and it is inconceiveable to me why a game that uses an engine that generally performs well on PS4 and XBOX One as well as older systems all the while giving you really nice graphics suddenly is so bad on the technical side (animations, loads of glitching and even some getting stuck, massive frame drops)

    - a lot of technical issues which seriously impact the whole game experience
+ can look stunning if you can afford a system priced around 4.000 Euro

A major problem, also to some degree criticised in DA:I is the very immature and corny writing. A lot of the dialogue is aimed at people aged 21 and younger, Loads of superficial babbling about nothing at all and just in general very much below the Bioware Standard of even DA:I. They also abolished the Renegade and Paragon system in dialogues and replaced it with professional, optimistic, realistic and funny comments from which to pick. Unfortunately they just trashed the original system and did not actually replace it with anything. Most of your choices will still lead to the same outcome. I had that happen several times. Yes you are given the chance to respond in the tone you want but you won't be able to say no or yes if the quests demands you accept or refuse. Also noticeable is that in a lot of dialogues with teammates and others you are limited to realistic or optimistic approaches. One example would be a discussion with a crewmember about her faith. You can either say: yes I also believe in a higher power or absolutely rebuke her and say: nah there is nothing like that. It feels forced and really rude especially given that: I don't know but I keep an open mind on all possibilities or I do not believe in a higher power, but I won't look down on you for believing would be viable options here that a normal human being might choose. The real problem is though that unlike Paragon or Renegade your Ryder doesn't actually form a personality which leads to different answers or a different general behaviour. You can answer professional all the time but your character will still act quirky and youthish which simply means that you can not really form him or her. Furthermore a lot of the voice acting is just plain bad. Not in low quality or what not but a lot of the voice actors simply sound bored and are just rattling off text.

    - corny and bad writing
    - limited choices in dialogues
    - bad voice acting on a lot of important characters
    - no personality system

The companions aren't bad. If you are looking for a new Garrus or Wrex/Grunt or Tali or even a new Joker... no luck here. Like I said they aren't bad but this is a serious step down from DA:I especially given that Freddie Prince Jr. absolutely killed it as Bull. He was incredibly good and so were the guys who did Dorian, Varric and the gals who did Sera and Cassandra... there is nothing of that quality here.

    - mediocre companions

A lot of core mechanics are just plain bad and or boring. The User Interface (to assign skills, research, find your journal etc.) is unorganized and a mess even for a console optimized UI. It's hard to find stuff, to organize or to even remember where stuff was. The scanning mechanic is very tedious and boring after a while and is basically just some padding to hide the fact that you are on yet another fetch quest. You can not check your mails via your omnitool, you always have to get back to your ship which not only means entering the ship but also means taking off with it and watching an unskippable cutscene. Planetmining is back and it is as boring as in ME2 and gets more tedious by the fact that every time you want to check a planet it zooms in too far as a graphic effect and then zooms out again, every time.

    - the core mechanics of the game are flawed

I would advise waiting for the game to drop to maybe 20 Euro/Dollar before buying it, it's simply not worth 60 bucks.

The ME story line has always been about story over visuals, even in max settings graphics are a mixed bag. Immersiveness of an RPG has been abandoned here more due to issues & focus on being a shooter than keeping to the successful mix of the previous triology. The writing in this feels more fan story, but that would be an insult to some awesome fan fiction. The writing is very forced, with huge disparity between characters, all of it lacking the subtle world building of the previous trilogy. In MEA visuals range from pre-ME1 to beautiful [a great shame that one moment at ultra settings its gorgeous and within seconds you have sub par graphics, efforts show on planets and the tempest but elsewhere its shockinkly distracting, including the animations], voice acting is clunky [on the verge of cringeworthy] and you'll be compelled to skip some conversations, the open world doesn't work a as invisioned at implentation and plenty of bugs. The menu systems and lack of quick save add to to the lack of polish and feel of a game console import, quicksave and lack of mini map becomes mind numbling annoying. MEA just feels awkward or forced. It almost seems ambition and reality of timeline in dev didn't work out. Also you can rush through this game and I think they should have stopped that or discourage it more as was found in ME2. In its simplist form you can get a real difference by listening to the ME1 Soundtrack against the MEA one. You kind of just get a 'meh' feeling. I think over time and progression, even if the main antagonist storyline improves, much of the detractors start to really grind, wear you down and get bored. It really does feel like just another shooter/rpg and lacks orginality [with some obvious repeats from the trilogy], although a new era some stronger links or rationale behind the main story might have helped, its just rather 'weak'. In addition to this, im reguarly finding gaps in knowledge, wondering how someone knows that or when was that explained? Rather big holes exist in the story line, I cant decide if this is lining up an MEA2 or forcing completionist games, however many exist in cut scenes in dialogue. There are hints of issues in the 'real world' appearing at times.

I've tired to keep an open mind that this is a new storyline and to give it a chance but in real terms this doesn't feel like 5 years of dev or classic bioware. If this is a start of new trilogy they have no option but to follow up quickly with a MEA2 and sort it out as many will feel that lack of wanting more as was found with ME1. Many wanted it to be more similar to ME1, but the genuius of ME one was polish, critical storyline and a moderated open world, this had not been achived in MEA. Some may even call it DAI in space. Its hard to bond with characters or even be that fussed with the storyline and sometimes events, plots and quests seem a drag or no real placement in the context they are set. You get quickly overloaded with fruitless side quests of no meaning or little relevancy. Loyalty missions reguarly have little to do with the team mate and youve hardly got to the stage of feeling any loyalty to them. As we can see from reviews, it's not bad, it's not great but 'neutral', a mixed bag which I think is the worst kind. Many of the old team left bioware and the ME franchise and random people bought in, and it shows. It lacks the maturity of ME1 and worst out of the 4, it certainty will be amongst biowares lesser titles. We all accept some bugs and issues but MEA sits on the dangerous grey area which has split the gaming community. A remaster of ME1-3 would have made some happier. Do I feel gripped to play this or rushing back to play it again or continue it from day to day life and work, no. This is a signficant difference to ME1-3.

In all it's a mixed bag and for many it will be the overall feeling of the game. My gut feeling so far is disappointment but most of all it lacks 'soul'.

Give it it ago, but be prepared. Many will feel they would have wanted to face the reapers than run away to andromeda. What a shame we had to wait 5 years to find out.

The game is full of bugs, on cutscenes, combat, gameplay, they can be encountered anywhere. Some bugs are easy to ignore, but some are unacceptable, for a 2017 mass game, its simply trash. Character Creation was a HUGE waste of opportunity, not much to do here, because ALL HUMAN FACES look mediocre, and ALL females faces are ugly as hell!

After that, you jump into the story, which is a critical disappointment, a NEW GALAXY that felt so empty. ''3'' new races, which the kett are the only interesting race with variety and mysterious presence in the galaxy, but the other 2 felt irrelevant, the angara felt like its near extinct by the kett and the remnant are some robots programmed to kill and guard stuff. The races felt very effortless. The andromeda galaxy doesnt stops there, what else does it has to offer? Empty planets with little to almost no life. The plot felt like a huge fiction in my opinion, a 10 man squad fighting a war and a galaxy at the same time, lol. And the writing was very weak- mediocre.

So the exploration is not bad, because everything is nice to see and all but the side quests ALL felt like annoying fetch quests, i never really cared about any of them, witcher 3 side quests are masterpieces compared to these. The combat is the only thing i loved in this game. I liked the guns and armors, but i wanted more. The shooting and cover system was good, but the only problem i had with combat was the squad AI on HEAVY gunfights. For unlogical reasons, they would stop firing for a few seconds to either move/jumpjet or simply meditate in the middle of the fight, i noticed this because since i was playing on hard, i was starting to notice that my 2 squadmates where at times useless. At some points, they felt like decoys but their abilities where decent like the omni grenades which are a must on heavy gunfights with lots of enemies. The enemy ai was a pretty good experience, i always felt like they where trying to kill me, because they always try to flank the sh#t out of you. Overall the combat was pretty memorable.

In conclusion, the combat succeeded its predecessors, but the story, the ''new'' galaxy, animations, the character creation and female faces are an insult to MASS EFFECT and its entire fanbase including me. I bought and played this game after watching countless negative reviews, thinking that it was all just a simple ''hate train''. No, is more than that, it is by far the biggest disappointment ive seen in gaming to date. Buggy, ugly and bad. Watch out CD Projekt Red, u dont want to be bought by EA, lol.

Hacking game is Alien Space Sudoku.

    Sudoku.

Along with everything else that has been repeated, that one thing sums up the utter lack of imagination the EA Interns had when designing this game.

If only they'd applied the same amount of effort to the rest of the game, that they did to the sex scenes...

    1. Everything that has to do with writing in this game is appallingly juvenile. The characters are mundane and are easy to dislike. The characters are mundane and are easy to dislike. The only character of the entire crew I found appealing and interesting at all was Drack. The writers should absolutely be ashamed of themselves. The game can't be taken seriously when none of the characters themselves appear to be taking anything seriously. Nearly every aspect of the games writing has this touch of light hearted foolery to it which is incessantly annoying.

    2. They completely removed being able to customize your companions/followers with weapons and armor. It was an aspect that I thoroughly enjoyed (and no one complained about) so I'm not exactly sure what they were thinking by cutting it. Companions skill trees are the only aspect you can customize. The skill tree is so small though, that you're given the illusion of choice here. You may as well put them on auto-level because it makes zero difference due to the skill tree being insignificantly small and insignificant regarding actual decision-making. You can't control the use of your companion abilities. It only allows you basic attack/defend commands, and most of the time its questionable at best if the a.i is actually following your attack commands.

    3. The illusion of choice. The Dragon age inquisition dialogue system was literally pasted into this game, which is to say that you don't really have dialogue interactions at all. Not really. Paragon and Renegade is gone (WHY?). Now are the days where you pick a dialogue option and get the exact same cutscene/outcome as any of the other options. This game is a total downgrade compared to previous mass effect games.

    4. Multiplayer. It's relatively the same as ME3, only its worse. It's a 7 round horde mode and each round is randomized to be different, such as holding a certain position for an amount of time or just simply surviving the round. You get credits for completing it. That itself is a bit mundane, but that isn't its biggest problem. The issue here is that literally nothing here is balanced in terms of characters or rewards. Weapons and characters you start with are quite literally BETTER than any of the ultra-rare classes or weapons you get from opening the 100,000 credit chests (the highest-tier chests). The sense of reward you get from playing the multiplayer does not exist because the reward system here is completely broken. If we're being honest, none of the classes or weapons are balanced for the hardest difficulty either.

    5. The animations. Not much to say that hasn't been said already. A high-school dropout amateur could have done better.

    6. Loot-progression in this game does not exist. Starting from level 1 you're given a fully completed crafting list that has everything already in it. You don't find or buy new recipes for crafting either. You don't find super-unique loot that isn't already in your crafting list. It just makes the whole idea of loot meaningless in the game. At least dragon age inquisition had unique gear you could find, there isn't even that in this game. When you kill the enemies in this game they have a chance to drop loot, that you basically can't do anything with; which you sell to vendors; in order to craft from a crafting list which was handed to you at level 1. Just... WOW.

    7. The side-content that makes up the majority of the gameplay in this game (10 hours of main story compared to 80+ of side content) is just mmo-filler fetch quests, basically dragon age inquisition copied and pasted here almost identically. If you're looking forward to maybe some interesting content on any of these large maps that you can explore, outside of the main story mission, they do not exist.

    8. Abilities. While combat shooting mechanics and snap-to cover was an improvement, they also downgraded combat significantly by only allowing the player to have a maximum of 3 active abilities. So, the game has no level-cap, and you can't manage your companions abilities, and you're only allowed 3 active abilities that you can only swap out at specific locations, and not during combat. This design is completely broken and is way too restrictive. I don't know what the purpose is of allowing the player to select any skill in the entire tree if they're only allowed to have 3 active abilities at max. Not only does this design contradict itself, but it makes for an overall unenjoyable system.

    9. The total obvious lack of any QA testing. The amount of bugs regarding missions and how many graphical anomalies there are in this game is actually ridiculous.

I could see people reviewing this game as a 5, at MOST. For me, it's a 3. I've played too many games and experienced too many systems/mechanics at this point. Being a programmer myself I just can't believe the lack of creativity or passion here. Nearly every single aspect of the game has been made pointlessly mundane and downgraded compared to previous mass effect titles.

really really poor story - in the old mass effect humanity found these gates that can jump travel called the mass relays - ok cool

in this new game you are suddenly able to mass relay by yourself in a new galaxy that is only 600 Light years away

if it was so easy , why dint the reapers do that , cleans the other galaxy i mean they did it every 50,000 years

what the **** is 600 years for them ?

story is BS from start to finish - huge gaps in story line -

compared to mass effect 1 where i had tears when i saw shepard becoming the first human specter and going over the galaxy using the mass effect relays to solve the impeding doom - now that was story line.

this game has nothing close to it .

plus games is buggy as hell - and not the small type - huge bugs

i was kicked out of the game a few times for no reason , i need to come within a inch of a object for the vegetation around it to appear , this is on ps4 !!!

its acting as if it has no ram

i am a hardcore fan of most rpgs , loved the mass effects and i am from Montreal ( main studio for this game )
and i cannot give it more then a 5 -

wait till it drops to 20$ not worth it otherwise

On PC, even with a high end pc, this game still has problem running properly, and it doesn't really look at all much better than the console version.

I really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this game without some major fixes). From funky animations, homely looking uninteresting characters, to a questionable story and boring repetitive gameplay. To make matters worse, the different parts of the game don't even mesh real well with one another; it's like the different teams of people that worked on different parts of the game failed to ever communicate with one another. It has left the game at launch to be one big dysfunctional mess.

Starting out it goes wrong real quick before you even enter the game. The default characters are certainly nothing to write home about, male Ryder is salvageable, but Female Ryder looks plain bad. Attempting to fix it in the CC is no easy task either. You cannot modify the default faces and the preset CC faces are one step above abominations. Once you decide upon a face, again another challenge presents itself in the form of a very simplistic CC, there aren't many options available and whatever you come up with will always resemble the preset face.

The poorly implemented animations hit you almost immediately and continue throughout. From odd facial expression to no expression at all, lifeless hands, strange walking behavior, and the biggest offender, poor lip-syncing to the dialogue, it plain out doesn't look good. It fails to suspend disbelief and for a game based on so much dialogue is difficult to get past. Aside from animations, graphically the game holds up, nothing mind-blowing or spectacular, but by no means bad. The landscaping is nice and much of the game looks good enough to immerse yourself in, the problem here is the characters stick out rather badly. They are cartoonish, waxy, and in some cases downright inhumanly ugly. The aliens naturally look better, mostly because there isn't a frame of reference for exactly "how" they should look, the humans are simply ridiculous. Some of them look like they were taken strait out of The Old Republic and just had new textures slapped on them.

Gameplay is okay at points and boring at others. The combat is familiar and largely unchanged from ME3, aside from the addition of the jet pack. The Nomad is okay to drive for about 10 minutes but quickly starts feeling more like a family van on a road trip than an APC. The lack of weapons was a terrible mistake and after awhile just getting in and out to fight things becomes a chore. The original developers dumped it for a reason; it should have stayed in the garage. The mini-games/puzzles are horrendously boring/frustrating, Sudoku, really? and mining for things, well I'm just not going to mine (really what was wrong with the orbital probe?) Missions are at best mildly entertaining and at worst mindless tedium, too much fetch filler and pointless dead-ends.

The story, at least to the 20ish hour mark is less than stellar. It takes a long time to get going and once it does, it feels more like the buildup to an aborted launch than an actual liftoff. It doesn't have the urgency or charm of the original series and it doesn't help that it is being played out by largely uninspired characters. The main antagonist seems more like a speed bump instead of that giant imposing stop sign that makes you take pause at what your are up against.

The developers it seems were out to make a game of a grand scope and scale and in doing so failed to see the little things that passed right by the wide angle lens they were using. Mass Effect was never about having vast landscapes to explore or tons of mindless things to do. It was about the story and characters, and the interaction of those two that made Mass Effect special. By attempting to make such a grand scale game they lost sight of that and ended up with a grand mess. What would have been wrong with simply making a Mass Effect game? Why try to turn it into something it is not, something that other games do so much better?

C'mon Bioware give us dedicated servers and a server browser list to easily find games, Bioware please fix the animations.

A tragic waste of effort. They killed the franchise with ME3's ending and now they give us this? Unplayable, boring, unlikable characters and just generally disappointing. Don't waste your money.

Since Metacritic found it suitable to delete my previous review I'll write another one. This is in no way shape or form like any of the other Mass Effect games. It's only Mass Effect in name only. Absolutely ruined a great franchise and made it into a buggy, horrible acting, 2005 style graphical piece of crap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Edit 2: Due to BioWare's recent middle finger to the fanbase, announcing it's focus on books and multiplayer and telling the people who wanted single-player DLC and content to **** off, I will be changing all scores for my ME series reviews to 0.

Edit: Thank you for proving my point, you brigading morons.

Summary - Mass Effect: Andromeda is faithful to the original trilogy, without sacrificing any depth that comes with the monumental task before you. The combat is tight, the animations are FINE despite what the mindless haters are saying (I've yet to notice anything, really) and the worlds, people and story are as deep as you've come to expect if you're already a fan, and very much worth buying if you're new and on the fence. The graphics are absolutely mindblowing, regardless of what specs your running (mostly high w/ frame rate drops here and there). My only complaint is I don't really notice any music, which really stood out in the first 3. Overall, BUY IT, I can't say enough good things about it, and if you like a deep RPG with people to meet and places to see, you will love it.

The game takes place in 2819, 600 someodd years after the original games. In 2185, during the gulf of time between the events of Mass Effect 2 and the beginning of Mass Effect 3, The Nexus, a space station to rival the Citadel shipped off into the dark space between the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy millions of light years away, flanked by Arks representing the major races (Turian, Asari, Salarian and Human) You are Sara/Scott Ryder, the Daughter/Son of Pathfinder Alec Ryder, sent to find 7 golden worlds to settle. Things aren't as they seem, and **** quickly rockets in the direction of the nearest fan, is all I'll say.

The first thing you're liable to notice outside of the stellar graphics when compared to the "meh" textures in ME3 is the verticality of the gameplay and environment with the edition of jumpjets (or Biotic powers, if you spec for them) which enable for much more frenetic combat. Enemy hiding behind cover? Jump and biotic charge their asses (if Vanguard, for example) The combat is very much fast paced, compared to any previous entries.

In addition to the added versatility, they've brought back the huge honking talent trees from ME1 (Although not as gratuitous with how many levels there are) while mixing them with the branching paths introduced in ME3. Whats more is you are no longer restricted. Sure you pick a starting place, but after that, you can put points in to Tech (Overload, Incinerate, etc), Biotics (Charge, pull, etc) and Combat (Concussive shot, Omni Grenade, and weapon skills) along with the Mass Effect 3 change of a weight-based loadout. Old favorites return (I liked Incinerate and overload for utility) along with newcomers like Lance (A targeted Biotic power that you can land headshots with) and Invasion (Tech power, lowers enemy defense and deals a small bit of damage over a radius) One thing I'd register as a minor draw back is you're limited to 3 powers at once (though this is remedied by the favorites system)

To top it all off, as you invest more points, you unlock interchangeable profiles based on the original classes (Invest in Combat/Biotics to unlock vanguard, whose perks allow you to refill shields by bashing people w/ melee) and you save up to 4 favorite loadouts (3 powers and a profile) to switch to on command with the F1-F4 keys.

I won't go into terrible detail on the planet stuff there is to do, but the exploration of them (Eos, for example) is weaved into the questing experience (which is something I can't say for something like Dragon Age: Inquisition - The Fillering) and eventually, you can choose what kind of outposts to settle after you've raised the Viability. That being said, I could see how it could get boring to some.

Last I'll touch on for fear of a character limit is the people you meet. A cast as diverse as you'd expect from the easy going Liam Kosta, to an insufferable thing named Addison, showcasing most of the races I've come to expect so far, both male and female (and the first 3 games didn't really show a lot of the female's of a given species, except for Eve and Nyreen in 3) The Dialog trees can get a little boring, given how many different things you can ask each character aboard the Tempest alone, but I personally very much love to know the people I'm fighting with, and they are all truly their own people with personalities and pasts. Obligatory mention of the fact that there are a fair few romance options, no matter which gender or orientation you lean towards.

I very much want to give an honorable mention to the mindless hatebots that spurred me to write this, people who in all likelihood haven't even played the game yet, for making big ****fights out of hardly noticeable animation/facial issues (in my time, hardly noticeable, anyway. Downvote away, I know you will.

The new engine makes the driving more fun and the environments are actually quite beautiful. Even though most of the characters are dull at best and aggravating at at worst. But there are some stand outs even if few and far between. Ultimately the game is lacking in most areas but has potential to be the rough beginning of something good. Greatest disappointment in my entire life (so far).
I have been a big fan of the Mass Effect series, ever since the first game. Of course, ME1 was not perfect. But the only thing I can honestly critique about it is the controls. ME2 was, in my opinion, perfection. One of the greatest games I have ever played and most definitely my favorite game of all times. ME3 was still very good, even though the "choices" they gave for the ending were, in my opinion, a lazy and rushed sort of decision to save money and time.
But, oh boy, don't get me started on Andromeda...
The first and foremost thing that really put a hamper on my excitement when I first started the game (which I bought despite it being a laughing stock in social media because of several bugs, the female models being disfigured on purpose after they were finished, the horrible facial expressions, etc.) was the fact that you could still not play other races in single-player. Not a huge problem and they never promised something like that, but it has been a wish of many players in the community and it was possible for DA, so why not ME?
The next thing that bothered me was that the thing that made the ME series so great, so unique compared to most other RPGs, was removed. Morality. Where in ME 1-3 every answer had the potential to influence NPCs reactions to you and you had special dialogues being unlocked depending on your play-style, in Andromeda, you don't have either. But as if that wasn't enough, you also don't have dialogue choices anymore. The game still gives you 4 choices but they are all the same, just said in a different way.
Since I already tore into the dialogues a bit, they sound like a robot wrote them. They are stiff, boring and often just cliché as hell. Lackluster, maybe inexperienced voice actors round the whole thing into a boring, annoying, unmemorable and in my case, mostly skipped experience.
The story line left much to be desired as well and it feels like almost all the money was spent on the visuals, leaving everything else in a more or less improvised state. The one point I give is really just for the big open world and beautiful graphics, which do little to nothing to redeem the game or make it worth the money I spent on it.
In my opinion, it was a big middle finger in the face of every fan of the series. And for everyone that played Andromeda as the first (and probably only) game of the series it must seem like a bland sci-fi rpg with a big open world that is way to big for its content.

Also, the number of homosexual characters is absurd: basically it's possible for almost any of the main characters to become involved in a sexual relationship, regardless of sex. There are only a couple consistently heterosexual main characters. This makes no sense as most estimates put practicing homosexuals at around 1% of the population. It would be like if a game that had a normal distribution of diverse characters suddenly made half of the people in the next game Lebanese Christians - crazy, jarring and really takes you out of the experience. While we're on the subject, the animation is terrible and the female characters have been what I can only describe as "reversed airbrushed" in order to be less attractive than the real life models on whom they are based. Some games you want to explore every nook and cranny inch by inch. They encourage you to scan every piece of lore, and to go looking for hidden quests and treasures. This game forces you do to all of this as the core gameplay, none of it is optional. And there's nothing of merit behind it to make it interesting.

In order to unlock the story-quest dungeons you have to find glyphs hidden behind the environment. You do this by activating your scanner (which slows your walking speed) and pointing it at every polygon in the area. They outsourced huge chunks of content to different teams, so there's no rhyme or reason to where these glyphs may be hidden. Once you find all of the glyphs in an area, you have to play sudoku with them to advance.

The scanner is also how you uncover codex entries, this game's version of lore. If you walk very close to an object, it will vibrate your controller (if you're using one) to tell you to scan something nearby. Or you can slowly walk around with the scanner up looking at everything. You must do this to earn research points. You need research points to develop the blueprints for your armor and equipment.

As you drive around the worlds, a thing will pop up on your screen and tell you that you can mine resources. You must drive back and forth very slowly, watching a little meter, until you can fire off a mining probe. Then you have to do it again until the region is fully exploited. You need to harvest these resources to build your blueprints.

Every time you want to move around the map between planets, you have to leave and arrive three times, each one a different version of an unskippable cut scene.

Say you're on Base X, and you have a quest to run and talk to someone on Planet Yawn. You dutifully walk to your ship. It asks if you want to leave, you say yes. You watch an unskippable cut scene of your ship leaving, that takes about 30 seconds. Then you see Base X in the close up view on the galaxy map.

You back out of that to the system view. It shows you an unskippable cutscene of your view zooming out. Not like "woosh you're zoomed out now". Like "wooshsweermubububub", ten seconds of movement. Then you zoom out again (several more seconds of wooshing views) to the sector map and pick a new area.

Then when you click the "let's gooo already" button, it zooms all the way back into the close-up view of the planet your at and shows a wooshing first person cinematic of zooming out all over again. Next is about ten seconds of seizure inducing "warp" travel (or whatever they call it, I couldn't be bothered with reading any of the lore) before you arrive at the next system.

Then more wooshing and zooming when you arrive, before you get the new system view. Click and woosh zoom again and you can finally select the planet you want to go to. Then it takes you back to the maxed out system view and wooshes you back into the planet view.

Except it doesn't just go to the planet. It zooms waaay into the planet, to mimic the image from the opening splash screen. Then zooms back out a little bit. Then you have to scan around the planet to find a landing spot, then you watch a cutscene of your ship flying down to the planet.

Moving from one planet to another takes about three minutes, with maybe ten seconds of button pressing. Almost all of it waiting and watching these three separate attempts at leaving and arriving.

    Every. Single. Time.

And there are a lot of quests that are just "Hey, you. Run and talk to this person and come back here real quick." And honestly, those are better than the actual quests.

So many quests have no icons on the map. Find all of this certain type of thing, find these random hickeys at static camps, locate all of the computers, the usual filler that dozens of games manage to make somewhat interesting this game makes boring and vaguely irritating. Like a relative who won't take your hints about how little you want to hear their story.

None of the boxes you can open are visible on the map until you buy an upgrade to your character later in the game. (And even then, only a few special chests show up.) And the worst part is that the containers can be any object in the game. That rock you didn't bother to walk up to and inspect? That was your boss reward treasure. That box-looking thing that had loot in it the last time you saw it? Not a box this time, it's in the potted plant.

And the whole time your party members are telling you how awesome the whole experience is. Shouting encouragement to remind you that yes, this is the game and you are enjoying it. A classic case of tell, don't show.

Because, some games are hard to like. You have to struggle past the flaws to the hidden qualities beneath that. This game doesn't like the people who play it. It's not even worthy of hating, because that would require a level of engagement and an emotional response that it's simply too tedious and bland to generate.

All that I could forgive, and there are some real positives hence the score, but not the bugs. Worst of all is the save game bug, and no its not just when you're topped fighting. Having saved the game last night, standing perfectly still on Eos and not looking at anything in a hostile way just in case, today I've gone through the previous 5 saves, including two manual, and can't get any of them to load. I loved Mass Effect 1 and 2, was disgusted by Mass Effect 3, but even 3 was not so bad comparing to this Andromeda disaster. Ceased playing and removed at 2nd mission on planet, it's that bad.

May be this will be interesting for kids up to age 10, anyone above that age will be deeply bored and insulted by the underestimation of his/hers intelligence by developers.

Only improvements was the huge worlds and combat itself which unfortunately is hindered by the bad UI that is limited and tailored for multiplayer period as only allows three abilities are allowed during combat no matter campaign or multiplayer mode. Alot is missing from originals too like races, weapons, having meaningful choices and consequences, squadmate loadouts, and renegade/paragon system and there isn't enough new to make up for it either. They even ruined special anmo along with biotic and armor piercing not even in game too. Game is also very buggy and lacks polish along with alot of what made mass effect and bioware rpgs special in first place.

In Mass effect Andromeda Good luck finding white males and males period in any powerful or meaningful role in game you quickly find that all mission givers and characters that are in power and meaningful in game are overwhelming female with the lesser being minorities or aliens if male at all. While White males are nowhere to be found in game except as cannon fodder or for mockery. This game not only is too extremely politically correct but ractist against white males and white people in general to the point that its too obvious and sickening to loyal fans who love the franchise and have been loyal since it started.

There is diversity done right like mass effect 1 through 3 and then there is ME andromeda not the way you want to do diversity in games as people play games to get away from their personal lives and have fun. The designer of game clearly wanted to get political and personal on a level that is bad for business given fact that majority of gamers will be of male gender to begin with and most likely a good amount white too when it comes to the RPG genre too not smart at all for a business.

I tried to understand bioware why most of their games lately come with horrific character creators and I Google it a bit. I discovered that the lead designer of bioware games is a racist against white people! You can search it yourself by adding his name in google search tab "Manveer Heir white people racist", there is many articles about him.
It may have to do with his origin, who knows, I wonder how is it possible for companies such as EA which they are against racism I think, to pay big bucks to employees who actually promote racism and they mess up with the games in a level that is very well obvious.
That also reflects drastically in their games. Now that I am aware about this, I will boycott their games.

Being a teenager is such a distant memory for me it was hard to relate to her so the game was divided into 'her' the cutscene Sarah and 'me' when I'm bounching around shooting things.

Being a teenager is such a distant memory for me it was hard to relate to her so the game was divided into 'her' the cutscene Sarah and 'me' when I'm bounching around shooting things. Luckily there was far more for me to be distracted with shortly afterwards, namely the awful character modeling, poor lighting and scripting that had me cringing so hard I nearly turned myself inside out. The culmination of which constantly broke the fourth wall and didn't allow me to really 'get into' the game.

Twice I had to save and reload as I was locked into a falling animation 2 inches above ground and a few hours in had to stop doing the strike team missions because each time the button to continue stopped working and I had to use the task manager to close the game.

The previous trilogy was well balanced between fighting and script. I know a lot of people get something out of fed ex quests but I sort of played my fill with those so it would have been nice to have an option where you only get quests that are relevant to the main plot.
That said the main plot did seem very thin for a ME game. Not the story but the way the story was structured and intergrated into a game.
I really enjoyed the last hour of the game and one of the loyalty quests reminded me of the old ME games so, that was nice.

    In summary:
    + Lot of content
    + Nice atmospheres inside game
    + Jokes
    - Script is total **** which ruins rest of the game
    - Even after the first patch game is still really buggy -- crashes, and bugs that cause you to stuck in the starmap
    - Quest feel very plain, run to A to B, go to planet A run, go to planet C... click object head back (oh shoot random mob here and there) thats it
    - New races are not interesting
    - Starmap is **** even the skip feature was introduced in last patch parts of the transition that should have been skippable.. are not
    - Multiplayer priority feels throughout the singleplayer:
    * Gear itemization uses same system as multiplayer which does not fit it
    * Planet locations feel just to be part of multiplayer stages where player hits the same enemies all over again.
    - Fights become boring way before you reach the end as game does not offer anything else but minibosses that are copies of normal enemies with just buffed stats. (except the architect but yet you get to fight the exact fight like 5 times o/)
    - You can equip 3 powers even there are like 30 active powers you can choose from -- this limits ability to play the game as biotic or tech spec.
    - In single player biotic singularity scales ridiculously big which causes you can even in hardcore mode to debuff / eat up many mobs
    - 3 abilities -> combat chaining as it has been introduced to ME do not work. Limitation to 3 abilities is clearly because of console support.
    * Mass effect is getting reduced to common FPS with console limitations

This game adds to my "brands&games ruined by EA" and "games ruined by console port compromises".

    TIPs:
If you are ME fan at least wait that the game receives more patches and that the game gets cheaper. If you are not ME fan and did not play the 2 original games, consider trying them

A short list of bugs I've encountered...

2 different missions I can't complete because of bugged doors that didn't open when they were supposed to. 1 mission I couldn't complete because I used a sniper rifle and killed the enemies before I got close, a mission that is a companion quest that unlocks the final tier of skills for Cora. Lose progress or lose Cora's abilities, good times.

A half dozen or so missions I had to reload my game because NPCs wouldn't talk to me until I did.
Try to talk to a merchant and just stand there infinitely, unable to move, access menus or do anything but alt+F4 and lose my progress. That only happened to meonce, once is one too many times.
Got stuck in a death loop (because I fell into water because of the awful movement mechanics) that wiped all my autosaves inside of a vault, had to use my last manual save and lost hours of progress.
Merchants had no items when I hit Tier VII. No items at all, none.
And my absolute favorite bug...sometimes the game decides there's too many effects and now every time you kill something the game should freeze for 20 or so seconds. Of course this happens mid-combat and on missions where you can't save so you have to endure the freezing til you get to a save point, or restart and lose progress.

Now add all these bugs to the uninteresting gunplay and the average storyline and you get...garbage. I've been forcing myself to play the game because I hate having things unfinished, but I've been tempted to just uninstall this game since the first planet.

I had Sam and 2 NPC's and an audio log all talking at once. No idea who said what.

In conversations with multiple NPC's sometimes you can't even see who's speaking the camera angle is so bad (yes I know you can move the camera but still can't find the speaker).
Graphics yoyo from amazing to amateur.
What went wrong with the designing of people in this game?
Their bodies and faces are a mess, like we went back 10 years maybe even further.
I went up to a guy on the Nexus and it was like playstation 2 level of quality! WTF

The planets all feel the same, only difference is sand becomes snow becomes grass.
Buildings and Kett sites are just reused over and over.
Mining with the nomad is painful and annoying.

The space travel was nice for a minute then became a chore.
The whole pick a planet then you travel towards it, skip the long boring travel part, zoom in and then zoom out and repeat.

The MAP! oh ma gawd the map. The map sucks on so many levels where to even begin.
Whoever designed it needs fired into a black hole.
It's the worst map design I have ever seen in any game ever with zero exaggeration.
The icon symbols all look alike, the blue layout is horrible to look at, you go into some caves or buildings and there is no map at all.
Also press 'M' for map then you have to press 'escape' twice to get out of it, who thought that was a good idea?
Can't use M again to exit the map and return to where I was, no that would be too easy.
The compass sucks btw, it's confusing as hell so you click the map more than you would if you had a minimap which ends up with you needing to press 'escape' constantly.

Companions are boring, besides Drack and Peebee who I liked, the rest bored me to death.

The inventory sucks, really hate the scroll wheel when trying to see what I've researched or picked up and when trying to compare items is just annoying. I want bring items up with both stats together. Plus when shopping I can't see if the weapon I'm buying is better than the one I have equipped.
And why the hell can I pick up a weapon but can't equip it until I go to a load out screen?
    What a load of crap.

The looting is terrible too, what's the problem with leaving corpses on the ground after combat? Trying to see those tiny circle loot displays when you killed the thing from a distance is rubbish.
At least if he was still lying there afterwards I could see him and go check for loot.
Also looting just becomes a habit more than a necessity, I can't recall a single time I looted an item and thought 'cool, need this'.

The little nodes for minerals, who worked on that? Probably the map person.
You scan the node and does the node disappear or change? No it stays the exact same way before you arrive so when you return in future and see it you think 'did I get that one?' and yes you did and the next one and the next one and so on. Major annoyance.

The mission/quests lay out is bad too, you revisit planets over and over.
I handed in a quest on the Nexus then reboarded the Tempest and immediately got a email to return to the Nexus! F******************CK!
This happened multiple times, leave a planet, talk to someone on the Tempest reland on exact same planet.

I could go on and on, conversions are weird at times, badly written too.
Oh before I forget, why is the main character given any dialogue choices since all of them tend to answer the same way.
There is no paragon/renegade system, I can't make my toon be super nice or a total **** so why even bother with the options.
There is loads of times where the options pop up to answer someone and you have two answers to pick from and both mean the exact same thing!
    Whats the point?
The good stuff, combat is fun ermmm sometimes the visuals of planets are nice but that's about it. I got this game for £9 on deal, I'm so glad I didn't pay full price or I'd be super pissed.

Graphics are good, exploration is good and combat is really good BUT personally i don't buy a Mass Effect game for the combat, good combat is a plus for sure but that's not what i look forward to when i hear there is a new Mass Effect game.

Fairly this game deserves a 5 or a generous 6 but it is imo inexcusable for a company like Bioware to release a game in this state and while they can patch some of the issues there is no saving the average story and painfully amateurish dialogue.

You would think that Bioware/EA had learned something from the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle... guess not, i don't expect much from EA, a company that cut part of Mass Effect 3 content so they could sell it as a day one DLC but am really disappointed with Bioware.

To conclude and while not a terrible game it is without a doubt (imo) the worst Mass Effect in the series.

If you want a good action-RPG, go with Witcher 3, Dishonored 2 or even Witcher 2. If you want a 2017 game with exceptional writing and mechanics, go with Nier. If you want a good RPG, go with Torment. Shooter? Sniper Elite 4, Deus Ex, or even Fallout 4 is better in that regard.

My biggest complaint of Andromeda is the script and the writing. It sounds like it has been written by an eager 14 year old trying to get into fanfic writing. Some of the dialogue is cringe-worthy and most of it is just bland and uninteresting. After 10 hours I couldn't be convinced to care about anyone I'd met and it didn't get any better.

The animation quality in general is terrible. Living in a post Witcher 3 world you could argue that of many games, but most games manage to make their characters convey some kind of emotion, here pretty much every character is a stone faced mannequin. No facial movement other than lips. Ever. Except the main character. It just feels so stilted.

The UI is garbage. That a PC title should be released with a UI in this state is just shocking. "Press ESC to Confirm". Really? Everything you want access to is buried under 3 layers of screens and clicking through them is a total clunkfest. They should actually sack the person who designed this UI.

Most of the game is purely fetch quests (the annoyance) and it just feels grindy as all hell. You can sub/resub to The Old Republic or WoW and have a better experience (and to be fair, a better story) for half the price.

The combat however is...good. It's a marked improvement and it really did feel pretty awesome even if the death animations were as bad as every other animation in the game and you don't have access to squad powers anymore, it was still pretty fun. Nowhere near enough to redeem the game though.

In short, this is what happens when you give your untested C-team the task of developing a triple A title under your flagship IP. Disappointing to say the least. I'm just so glad Origin does refunds now.

Others have already pointed out the visual, game play, and bug problems so I'm not going to rehash those. What I'd like to say though is I'm tired of the social justice themes in bioware games. If I'm in the minority in this then fine, keep doing it. But I'm officially done with bioware games. I know I know... don't let the door hit me on the as... behind on my way out.

Scanning for plannets, driving the stupid vehicle. They basically took everything that was bad in 1,2, and 3 and made it into this game. A lot of cut scenes are unskipable and the constant characters talking is very annoying. This will be right off the bat when you run towards a cave, Liam "look there is a cave over there" or "save your breath Ryder" as he pants for air. 0/10 don't buy it, bioware wasn't invested into the characters either and most dialogue didnt have a human to sculpt it, instead they used algorithms for lip movements. The only reason to buy the game is the multiplayer. All those game critics that gave this game a good review, let that be a lesson on not trusting these bad game review companies that aren't honest. As the fourth game in the series, the very first game of the series had more choices and emotional connection between the characters. Bioware has come a long way to nothing. Expand

By far one of the worst Mass effect games ever made. Redboxed it and returned it the next day. Sluggish, boring and just half baked. This is a prime example on how game politics and corporations place bets that us the gamer consumers would just buy anything. Im super happy I didnt pay retail cost or nowhere near that cost becuase they just dont deserve it.

You have guess what.....5 planets. Even less explorable planets than Mass Effect 1 had.

Well, obviously they didn't even try.

If you print Mass Effect on the cover, there needs to be Mass Effect in it. You know, focusing on story, characters and a consistent universe. Long story short, halfway through i lost interest (i finished it, but in the fastest way possible). The writing was horrible. There is no other way to put it.
They had the potential and the budget to do something really fantasy and they wasted it to do some useless open world stuff. 1 new civilization, who are clearly the good guys, one new civilization, who are clearly the bad guys, and a few robots, which serve as shooting target practice. There was no revelation, or surprise, no suspension, nothing that really pushed me forward. I never felt, like i needed to know how it all would end.
Mass Effect never was about great combat or about exploration. It was about getting to know a fascinating universe (There is a difference there). Most of all it was about great storytelling glued together by good feeling combat. The combat in the trilogy felt good and was fun, because it was always grounded in a good context. Combat never was there, just to be there. And no amount of jumping around in combat can make up for lack of good writing. After the fifth Kett transport ship turned up, it turned from playing into boring grinding. (And why the **** can the player now become a flying ball of energy)
The combat in andromeda is fun, but combat alone is no motivation for 50-100h of gaming.

Characters are mostly forgettable. Most of them tell and no one shows, another sign of bad writing. And the worst part is the main character. Every time he/she says anything else than the "professional" answer i want to facepalm. Its so embarrassing and anti-charming. He/she cant even remotely stand up against Shepard. Besides, there is no choice left. Regardless what type of tone you pick, its always the same meaning.

To conclude this: In my opinion this games problem is, that it has way too much „teens in space“ injected into it. Just like the new star trek remake movies. They are fun to watch, but they throw everything exciting about the universe out of the window. Its all just fighting and stupid characters. And as soon as the credits roll, you have already forgotten the movie again. That is Andromeda.

If you are the kind of gamer who plays and enjoys games like Mass Effect 1-3, this game will be an astonishing disappointment. If you believe a good RPG game of this scale should have: good dialogue, good visual design and aesthetics, immersive atmosphere, a high level of polish, interesting plotlines, you will be sorely disappointed in Andromeda.

As it stands this is the equivalent of a carnival shooting range, lots of things to shoot and lots of different backgrounds to shoot them in, but what is the point without good context? People play games like Andromeda to fantasize about living in the world of the game, to imagine being the protagonist, to feel truly immersed in the elaborate worlds these games build. This is literally impossible to achieve when your cross-eyed character constantly clips, when glitches happen frequently and completely shatter any suspension of disbelief you could build up. This game rapidly becomes a chore, the only person I can imagine enjoying this game is someone who has been in a coma for the last decade and this game was the first thing they played after waking up. Even then they'd become sorely dispirited after discovering that in ten years games had improved so little.

But above all else Andromeda's greatest sin is it's scale. Considering that this game is so lacking in quality playing it would be a waste of time, the amount of hours one would sink in to beating this game could better be spent playing literally dozens of other far more immersive games. It is ironic that apologists for this game reference it's scale and scope as positives, which is like shouting about what a great deal an all you can eat buffet of diarrhoea.

    - monotonous busywork quests (chores)
    - cheap, annoying Sudoku puzzles substituted for story and plot elements
    - forced repeat cut-scenes galore - you will spend more time watching the same cut-scenes, like your ship taking off and landing, than actually playing the game
    - dumbed-down combat, squad mechanics largely removed from the series
    - ridiculous looking new species with a main antagonist that looks simian and not scary

I had think about what went wrong with this installment and wonder if ME has a chance to get back on track with future installments and DLC. There're two root causes to this disaster.

Root Cause 1: This isn't BioWare anymore.
We've seen the news articles of the past few years, EA has either chased out or given no good reason for much of the original talent to stay and they have moved on. This game was developed by a group that had never developed a game before, let alone a AAA and an ME installment. Games are art, and good art is greater than the sum of its parts. What EA has done is like if a media giant bought out Harry Potter after the first couple books, fired Rowling, and assumed they could have HR fill in the void with "some writing positions". On this note, I don't see how the ME series will ever be resurrected, we should expect future additions to be the same corporate-form-driven empty shells.

Root Cause 2: Lack of understanding of the target audience and/or trying to please everyone, leading to so many contradictions, below are some examples:

The "M" rating. If we forget about the "romance", which I'll discuss in a second, there is no reason this game should have an "M" rating. The G-rated, family friendly dialog and subject matter is clean cut. Characters sound like awkward teenagers rather than mature adults.

Then there's the awful romance which is a mystery why they even bothered. Due to political correctness pressures they made the characters, and especially the females, plain to grotesque. Asari, long considered in the lore to be "attractive to all species" are horrifically done and all but one of them have the same head! What kind of sense does it make to advertise "sizzling hot romance" but then populate the game with ugly choices! How many romance novels are there that feature ugly people on front cover? How many soap operas deliver up a cast of plain looking fugmos? How many people surf porn looking for unattractive people? On top of all that they made it a hollow "press the heart button/choice for romance" process. I would argue they probably should have just dispensed with the half-azzed romance which would have allowed them to lower the rating from M.

And this segways into the next mind boggling contradiction, the ugly player character. Apparently they are concerned our self-esteem will suffer if we [shudder] see an attractive person on the screen. How ridiculous is this position? "You will feel awful about yourself if you play as an attractive person, so we made it so you have to play an ugly person/avatar, that will be best for your self-esteem!"

Open World: They are trying to simultaneously please (and failing) people who prefer open world shooter games with their core fanbase that prioritizes role playing elements and a solid story above all else. The result: crappy story with a huge open, but largely empty and boring world.

Combat: We now have the freedom to assemble ANY collection of skills and make our own "class", but alas, we can now only use 3 powers at a time. Gone is the power wheel. Gone are squad controls. Since you can only field 3 powers and can no longer control squad-mate power execution, they've transformed it into primarily a shooter as it is now difficult to be a powers-mostly class.

Yet another contradictory element, the bragged about "15,000 lines of voiced dialog". It didn't occur to them that quality is far more important than quantity. The dialog is so empty, cliched, full of one-liners, and boring that you'll be space-barring through it.

They tried to appeal to the LBGT community and managed to insult them as well has crush the toes of their more conservative customers. The most egregious example is the checklist in-your-face addition of a transgender individual. This could have been well done e.g. have someone in the crew whose gender is ambiguous, perhaps if the PC earned their trust they would confide some secrets, or perhaps not and leave it a mystery for the forums to discuss. But no, that would be interesting writing. Instead we get: "Hi I'm Hainly, I never met you but I'm a transgender person!"

There's plenty more but I'll leave it there.

    Overall rating: Not recommended.

I finished about a week ago,my view of "the game" is a absolute disappointment, the terrible animation even with (1.5 update) it toke 85 hours to complete everything, the planet scanning is useless , it looks like the game is racist agains withe people because all the human dead bodies are bold and all withe, some upgrades are useless conversations feel like nothing you don´t get " that feeling of immersion",the amount of bugs and glitches reached the " next level"( can check my bug/glitch video).

All the people who said "gets better within 10 hours" no it doesn´t!,it goes beyond worst, broken quests or stuck, frustration with conversation that trigger the same answer,(basically saying what i dont want or misunderstanding of the question/answer) everyone said "ho its a new galaxy with new planets unexplored" almost all of the useless planets already have information about the *spoiler!* Angara people exploring them or the exile, the arks where very disappointing, i thought it would be epic to find them and free them but no its frustrating.

who suffer with epilepsy STAY AWAY!)
there is a glitch that hapends often that flashes in white (check part 2 video)

graphics are ok,looks clean and sharp ,but it need a lot of optimization(tested on pc)
game play is great, but if i was you compare Battlefront(third person) vs mass effect, they move and feel practically the same .

The explorable planets they all have they'r difference but after spending a lot of time doing every single quest/sidequest it begins to feel the same, you will find the same animals in all the planets, some mission are become repetitive,in *spoiler!* Kadar after you save the planet you can walk in the acid pools but there is no interaction so you can stand underwater, there are some unfinished places, you can find one in eos where there is a mountain floating and you can go with nomad just under it.

Mass effect Andromeda is a mess made by a sub studio with clearly no experience in making story rich games.

    I slash a 4/10
Don´t buy wait until they partially fix it (because its impossible to fully fix),and get it cheaper, the money they ask for the game is not even close to acceptable.

Was it a good ending, eh if you go by the indoctrination theory i guess but it was good for what it was. THEN COMES ALONG MASS EFFECT ****ING ANDROMEDA TO RUIN THE GREATNESS OF THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY!!! While the original trilogy was known for its amazing story, great writing, unforgettable squad mates, and more, Andromeda takes all that and throws it out the air lock.

I think I now understand how star wars fans felt when the prequels came out cus this game is so ****ing terrible that if Bioware literally released a game where you play as Jar-Jar ****ing Binks and you just run around the citidel running errands, THAT would be a better game, in fact that would be such a good game by comparison I wouldnt even hesitate to give it game of the ****ing century when compared to this turd.

Here are a list of complaints I personally have with the game:

    - The writing comes across as bad fan fiction AT BEST. All the characters are bland and boring, uninspired, etc. I've played indie games with a fraction of the budget that have better writing. When games like Hyperdimension Neptunia, a meta joke of a franchise literally with 1/1000th of the budget specifically made to make fun of the video game industry have better writing than your AAA multi-million dollar game, you know you ****ed up (and I'm not saying Neptunia is bad (its actually super underrated), I'm saying that its sad that such a tiny game has better writing than a game with some of the best writers in video games)

    - THERE IS SJW PANDERING EVERY 2 ****ING SECONDS!!! I WANTED TO ENJOY THIS GAME, I REALLY DID BUT THERE IS SO MUCH PANDERING I LITERALLY CANT PLAY IT WITHOUT PUKING!!! HOW THE FLYING **** DO U GO FROM GEMS LIKE MASS EFFECT 2 AND ARGUABLY 3 (except the ending), WITH SMART AND UNBIAS POLITICAL COMMENTARY, WHERE YOU DECIDE WHATS RIGHT, TO SOMETHING THAT IS SO BIAS AND PANDERING TO SJWS THAT ITS UNPLAYABLE??

    - THE GLITCHES!!! Keep in mind that i generally dont care if a game is buggy as long as its good. For example, Xcom 2 is broken on PC to this day but it is so fun I can look past the bugs and give it a 10/10. When the story is bad, the writing is bad, the game is boring, AND THEN U ADD ON A TON OF GLITCHES, thats when I care about glitches

    - THERE IS NOT A SINGLE INTERESTING CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRE GAME!!! FOR ****S SAKE KHALISAH AL-JILANI (The reporter that gets punched a lot from the original trilogy) HAD MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAN ANY CHARACTERS IN THIS ENTIRE ****ING GAME!!!

    - SQUADMATES ARE USELESS

    - SQUADMATES ARE BORING, ALSO PEEBEE HAS THE VERY DEFINITION OF A STEREOTYPICAL SJW VOICE!!! I WANTED TO ROMANCE HER BUT I CANT GET PAST HOW MUCH OF A ****ING PSYCOTIC SJW SHE SOUNDS LIKE... Ok fine Drax is a ok character but thats it. I WISH HE WAS IN THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY THO, A 1500 YEAR OLD KROGAN, HOW LEGEND!!!

    - EXPLORING IS BORING

    - THEY ****ED UP MULTIPLAYER, ME3 multiplayer was good, they ****ed up the balance and now its really really bad.

    - CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THERE ARE LITERALLY ONLY 2 ALIENS IN THE ENTIRE GALAXY??

    - The game doesnt even respect its own lore let alone previously established lore. Pay attention while playing, soooo many inconsistencies. Also why the **** would they not bring omni-gel, this stuff literally heals any life threatening wound in seconds and works on most species yet you chose not to bring this amazing invention?

    - I couldnt care less about the bad guys

    - The menus are worse than vanilla skyrim

    - No paragon/renegade.

    - it does not feel like a mass effect game.

    - I CANT RUN THE GAME WITH MY GRAPHICS CARD OVERCLOCKED SINCE IT THINKS I REMOVED IT IF I RUN OVERCLOCK, IF THAT WERE THE CASE I WOULD GET A BLUE SCREEN.

    - I was hyped for 5 ****ing years for this turd. 5... *****ING... YEARS... This game is the most blatant cash grab I've ever seen

    - I would list more... but my face is tired

Anyways. I will never, EVER, be buying a bioware game ever again. This is the worst game I've ever played NO QUESTIONS ASKED, and no i'm not exaggerating. Now if you will excuse me I'm going to go play big rigs since that is a FAR superior game

Probably the worst thing I could have done in hindsight as it only highlighted even more the fall from grace that Bioware have achieved with Andromeda. In the first hour you'll experience the tedium that stays with you for the rest of your experience. The breadcrumb-style fetch quests and total over-reliance on scanning ends up turning everything you do into such a chore to the point where even Ryder themselves makes frequent comments about the fact that 'nothing is ever simple'. When loading times and travel times between zones and planets are this long and you're on stage 4 of a 5 or 6 stage fetch quest between planets you start to get pretty frustrated pretty fast. Navpoint after navpoint for simple, non-consequential quests become infuriating and the rewards for completing these quests are minimal.

The main protaganist is as far away from Shepherd as Andromeda is from the Milky Way in terms of being a character you can invest in and relate to. Where a huge part of Shepherd's character was being a champion of a cause that people could rally to, Ryder comes across throughout as a character out of their depth and painfully cringey in certain conversations. Perhaps having the Andromeda Initiative being a corporate-type project means that it loses that sense of authority or duty and ends up feeling like you're playing as an employee of a company you find hard to care about. Having the military theme in the original trilogy representing the species gave a sense of gravity to your actions. Not so in Andromeda.

While there are quite a few technical hiccups throughout the game it's not these technical issues that hold the game back. It's a huge, lush canvass that Bioware did a great job in building and decorating but it's the lack of engaging characters, storylines and quests that let the game down. None of the crew of the tempest evoke anything close to what the crew of the Normandy did with ease in the original trilogy and this results in even their personal quests becoming yet another distraction and a further chore on a long list of chores. The enemies you fight aren't nearly varied enough and while there are a few hairy situations thrown at you, overall you'll find a one-fits-all strategy early on and then go through the motions with it throughout. Not having access to your companion's powers in combat only highlights how removed your companions are from the experience. Combat often feels like a lonely affair as a result and the devastating combos you could launch in the original trilogy are underpowered and restricted to your own three powers only. The gun play and cover system is good but the choice to remove control over your companions was a mistake in my opinion as your companions just aren't as valuable to you in combat as they were in the original trilogy.

Overall a huge disappointment that failed in the writing room long before the artists and designers got to work. Bugs can be patched but there's nothing they can do about childish writing, hammy dialogue and soul-less breadcrumb quests. Swing and a miss from Bioware.

I was so hyped for this game a year ago, now because of that my disappointment is even greater.
I couldn't believe that was even possible for a Bio-ware game, such an amazing studio once, to fall in every aspect of this game so deep that it looks like it was made ten years ago by some indie studio.

I couldn't believe that was even possible for a Bio-ware game, such an amazing studio once, to fall in every aspect of this game so deep that it looks like it was made ten years ago by some indie studio.

Now i tried to play this game, even made like half way through and it wasn't the horrible animations or the terrible looking characters that were the worst part of it. Oh no. The writing and the voice acting in this game are absolutely the worst i have seen in a triple AAA game in my life. And I've been playing games for 20 years now almost.

The writing is so bad, uninteresting, boring, stupid, the stuff that's coming out of their mouth looks like it was written by a 13 year old, and combined with hideous voice acting makes the whole game looking like a joke, like couple of kids went to space to have fun.
Characters laughing in death threatening situations, making stupid jokes all the time, saying sentences that would never be used in real life by humans, main character with a voice actor so bad, that it's a chore to play. There is basically no any kind of emotion shown by any of the characters, the whole thing looks terrible.

Graphics are nothing special, combat is interesting but far less then previous Mass Effect games in my opinion, personally i didn't like the new automatic cover system but that's subjective.

The whole exploration thing just doesn't suite to a Mass Effect game. Quests are boring and annoying most of them is just killing enemies and fetching some thing over and over and over again.
The interface options, weapon crafting and menus in general are a complete mess. Map is also bad looks really poor.
Every aspect and game component of this game is so downgraded and so bad, except maybe the combat, that i think it deserves the user rating it received.

Animations, voice acting and facial graphics would had been good 10 years ago. Sadly, Mass Effect cannot compete with today's most popular games. UI: Menus are a maze, no minimap, or quick access to the map. You get a new codex / journal entry every second, so it's very easy to get lost in what's going on.

The game is very unrealistic even for a sci-fi game. Same fauna on every planet, no gravtiation, everyone understands everyone

Plot and quests are boring: When I was sent on the 10th scan this-scan that type of mission I groaned.

Cover-system is very unreliable and clunky.

I've only returned two games in my "Career" as a gamer. I've been playing space simulators and science fiction games since the atari, and I have to say, I'm actually impressed at how poorly executed this game was. Riding the wave of three previous best sellers should give you some umph behind your product.

    The Good:
Gunplay is fast. Combat is simple, effective enough I suppose.
    Magicka style combos I guess?...weird.
It runs well. Not the most beautiful thing out there, but its not bad for a bioware title

    The Bad:
The writing reminds me of something I'd find in the Juvie Adult section of the book store. Ham fisted, over acted [voice actors/resses try...] and just plain BAD. The first mission was pretty much a long series of "Huh. I didn't expect THAT to happen. Not."
The graphics feel like they belong on a X360, and I'm playing on high-ultra.
The inventory menu has enough sub menus to start selling 5 dollar foot-longs. [Classic Mass Effect]
Bugs? Second Cutscene I had on the first planet, there was a body stretched across the entire screen, even though the camera changed three times.

It didn't hook me in the slightest. I played it for about eight hours and was still able to return it. Might return in a year or so when it drops to the bargain bin.

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
