I’ve played more Touhou fangames than I can count, and Marisa of Liartop Mountain still stands out as one of the best in years. Its runtime may be short and its navigation a little frustrating, but the stunning visuals, immersive voice work, evolving gameplay, and surprisingly deep themes make it unforgettable. If you’re already a Touhou fan, passing on this one would be a huge mistake.

Marisa of Liartop Mountain is an intriguing RPG that combines traditional elements of the genre, such as a leveling system and turn-based combat, with those of tabletop games. The game's intriguing story and premise of Reimu searching for Marisa keeps players engaged from chapter to chapter, and there's a strong sense of risk and freedom due to a dice-rolling mechanic and wealth of decisions to make. Despite the lack of voice acting for fan-favorite Touhou Project characters, the cozy narration and music make up for it.

Marisa of Liartop Mountain trades bullet-hell precision for dice-driven chaos, turning Touhou into an energetic tabletop session with roguish friends. It’s unpredictable, and sometimes repetitive, but the Scarlet Mansion’s banter helps to keep the climb entertaining even when the dice rolls stop you in your tracks.

Marisa of Liartop Mountain reimagines the Touhou formula with a bold tabletop twist, trading bullet hell for dice rolls, dialogue trees, and narrative experimentation. While it offers charm and creativity through its figurine-style visuals and Scarlet Mansion commentary, the game’s reliance on chance and repetition may divide fans.

All in all, Marisa of Liartop Mountain is a cute little game that pretends to be complicated than it is. If you’re a Touhou fan who doesn’t mind restarting if necessary, you’ll have fun. Everyone else is likely to get annoyed and drop it.

Marisa of Liartop Mountain offers an interesting take on the Touhou universe, blending puzzle and RPG elements with the feel of a narrated tabletop game. Despite its rigid structure, which requires frequent backtracking (revisiting areas to complete objectives) and distances the game a bit from its initial proposal, discovering solutions to challenges and managing the dice in combat provides a pleasant, albeit limited, experience.
