I played on EA Play so I basically paying nothing to play it.

From the get-go I notice a LAUGHABLE resolution .jpg of the (I'm assuming) main character. I check my options to make sure I'm not in low quality mode for whatever reason. Nope, just looks like 120p YouTube videos. I then delved a bit deeper into the options and notice how bad all the options are. I use a widescreen monitor

I then delved a bit deeper into the options and notice how bad all the options are. I use a widescreen monitor and it renders the game UNPLAYABLE. There's no option for anything higher than 1920x1080 which usually isn't a problem, but for this particular game it cuts off half of the options screen and severely messes up the alignment of where your cursor is. What I mean by this is that the glow around a button was literally an inch or more off of its intended area leaving floating red boxes instead of outlines of my buttons in combat.
This is also not mentioning the plethora of unpolished options such as 3 of EACH resolution (why? I have no idea) that make this not even something that I wanted to invest time into.

Ill be straight forward and tell everyone I didnt get to the meat of the game, but the game is so poorly ported it made me uninstall within the first 30 minutes of TRYING to make it work.

Overall if I had to pay anything for it I would have been appalled

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not sure if it is the nostalgia factor of the game or some sort of witchcraft that is making people rate this game highly but I am glad I am not susceptible to either of the two. Growing up playing tons of great PS One era RPGs such as The Legend of Dragoon and Shadow Hearts, I had high hopes for this game.

    HAD.

The most blatantly negative thing about the game is the writing. While the story itself seems interesting and engrossing enough to be a JRPG, whoever wrote the script for the characters did an awful job. There is A LOT of circling around being done. For example, the main character being stuck on wanting water for about 10 lines of dialog while the other character wants information on a monster. It's redundant, stupid and poor writing. And it's not the only example as the main characters quite often do this. The straw that broke the camels back for me was eventually meeting Lazarus and learning about Fatebound and all this other empty plot line jargon that meant nothing to the player as nothing was explained. The other main character, Aria, is obviously poorly thought out as she contradicts Lazarus at almost every dialog point in regards to the "prophecy" but she herself went to look for him because of a prophecy...so why the hell wouldn't she believe what he was telling her?! Characters have such forced personality changes it's like you're playing a game with characters who all have multiple personality disorders. The main protagonist, Finn, for example, is imprisoned for however long with....wait for it....AMNESIA (of all things....) and has been fighting and getting beaten for who knows how long (as it was never explained) but somehow trusts a random old man with the ability to speak directly into his mind. Thought the old man was cool huh? Well a cut-scene or three later old man is gone and dead. The bandits that were robbing them? Just ran off even though they killed the old man. The whole purpose was to steal their stuff. They clearly beat them (as apparent by the "unwinnable battle" cliche) but then just run off and leave your with your armor, weapons and items? WHAT?!?!

There are staggeringly more points of amateur writing (I apologize to amateur writers like myself who can pull out a better story in 10 minutes while sitting on the toilet). This was all just within the first hour or so into the game. The game's only saving grace is the artwork itself. The hand-drawn scenery is very well done and reminds me of The Legend of Dragoon. The animations however, show a severe lack of experience as they are very stiff and deliberate looking, which is sad because the cut-scene characters look great and move like living artwork.

Sound-wise, the game is also lacking. Monsters and characters alike have nearly no voice to them, not even in combat. Those that do are so underwhelming it sounds like the sound was recorded through layers of sound proof material. You'd expect a loud "ROAR" from a 15-ft tall fire monster but what ends up coming out is a muffled meow in comparison.

Whether or not the game gets better (story-wise mainly) will forever remain a mystery to me. The lack of character depth and explanation alongside a horribly cliche story and brain dead writing make me never want to play the game again and wish I myself had amnesia so I could never remember playing it to begin with.

This game got me hooked for the first three hours until the poor writing got on my nerves. Yet, I decided to finish this game.

Good points: -game's lore is promising -the soundtrack fits game's theme -battle mechanics are ok (different with skirmish) Bad points: You won't hear any voiceovers in this game, thank god it didn't! I can't imagine someone reading those cringe-worthy

Character interaction is just moronic. Aria takes the cake for being the most annoying character in this game. Also, the skirmish gameplay is so dragging! It takes almost an hour to finish!

So what's the saving grace in this game? Probably the ending. Wrong! Get ready for 3 minutes of nonsense, and there was no closure to the war and all the parties involved.

Use your 40 hrs. with another game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The writing is just too bad to make it worthwhile. Neither the art nor the soundtrack is exceptional so it can't overcompensate like some older jRPGs could, and the gameplay isn't fun enough to carry you through.

Who had the bright idea to not let you finish off the first boss? Talk about the most UNSATISFYING fight imaginable! It was hard too, i had to grind for it, probably because I didn't pick the appropriate stats to level up, but still! After all that work somebody else comes in to finish him off for me?? REALLY made me not want to pick up the game again.

In the end, Legrand Legacy: Tale of the Fatebounds may scratch your itch for that nostalgic JRPG experience, but only if you're really desperate for such. Otherwise, prepare to mentally harden yourself to withstand many frustrations as you drag your way through the game. It's a shame that despite the stunning art and music, Legrand Legacy ended up being a very average JRPG, greatly flawed by its questionable choices in the game design and pacing.

Legrand Legacy is a polished game that has sadly taken a few controversial decissions, like the use of beautiful but complicated to navigate pre-rendered scenarios or QTE in combats that could may not be for everyone's taste. It should, however, please fans of the JRPG genre with its cliche but engaging plot and overall solid gameplay.

We had some great expectations for this title, but sadly Legrand Legacy wasn't quite able to live up to them. We strongly suggest to download the free demo on Steam before buying this title, to see for yourself what you're going into.
