It's not necessary to go to LucasArts or Sierra for a bit of nostalgia. Kathy Rain is a great modern classic point-and-click adventure that fits perfectly in line with Blackwell, Gemini Rue and Shardlight.

The pacing of the narrative works well and kept me wanting to push forward and find out more. I would certainly recommend this game if you like point and click adventure games or like narrative driven games that have slightly darker and mature themes, but still manages to have moments of humour.

While it still carries some common adventure game problems, Kathy Rain acts as a nice update to the genre that still looks like a product of the '90s. Adventure game veterans and newcomers should find a lot to love with this one.

One of the best graphic adventures of recent years, with an interestingly complex main character and some enjoyable puzzles.

Really sticks out as one of the best looking pixel art games I’ve played in a while.

Kathy Rain tells a satisfying story, but if I hadn't been reviewing it, I'm not sure I would have stuck around long enough for it to hook me.

Mediocrity in every way. The developers of Kathy Rain should have realized early on that they are unable to create a work of art with interesting supernatural elements and human emotions.

  1. I think the ending could have been better embellished, provided a little more closure and be a bit less rushed. And gosh does it desperately need speeding up a mite. But I had a splendid time with Kathy Rain, and thoroughly enjoyed a game where I couldn’t see where it might be heading. Kathy proves a complex and interesting character, and, well, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. Which is the simplest recommendation of them all.

interface is terrible..............very unpractical.the classic scumm verbs would have been better than this click to select, click again tointerface is terrible..............very unpractical.the classic scumm verbs would have been better than this click to select, click again to decide the action, which often causes the character to do unwanted(slow)actions.....it's also very slow both in storytelling and movement/actions,and this gets boring quite fast. shame ,because the game seems not bad at all.....classic point and click adventure, decent graphics and puzzles. It came as no surprise to me the fact Kathy Rain got such low ratings on Metacritic, and I´m not only refering to the user´s critics. Well,It came as no surprise to me the fact Kathy Rain got such low ratings on Metacritic, and I´m not only refering to the user´s critics. Well, "critics" wouldn´t be the right term, since so far (at the moment of writing this review) there are a only 2 proper user reviews, and both recognize the game properly. If anyone reading this wants to check how the actual public received Kathy Rain just visit the Steam store webpage. Full Review »

Kathy Rain is a really good point'n'click adventure game with good writing, interesting characters and strong voice acting. It is a vivid example of the fact that adventure games don't need stellar graphics and can thrive on story and atmosphere alone.

One thing I was afraid of when I started playing is that the main character seemed like a product of a Mary Sue syndrome. She is a strong, college girl, a biker, a smart mouth and, of course, pretty. But the creator is a dude, so the theory doesn't stick. At least the character is consequential in her actions throughout the game.

I wrote earlier that the game doesn't have stellar graphics and I stand by it. It doesn't change the fact, though, that Kathy Rain boasts some of the best pixel art in the last several years. Same goes for the sound. Voice acting is quite good and seems very well implemented for an indie game.

All in all Kathy Rain is a recommendable title. Surely not the best adventure game ever, but definitely one of the few pearls in the last half-a-decade. With a low asking price it's a treat for any adventure gamer out there.
