A fantastic story well told, superbly presented. When it comes to point and click adventures on Steam, Kathy reigns.

A remarkable achievement from a first-time developer, Kathy Rain is an unexpectedly personal gem about a heroine who proves she belongs with the genre’s other big names.

Blend a setting which reminds True Detective with the atmospheres of Twin Peaks and the results will be Kathy Rain, a well-written and intriguing point-and-click adventure that proves the incredible talent of Joel Staaf Hästö, the solo developer of Clifftop Games.

No hyperbole, Kathy Rain is yet another milestone in this resurgence of old-school point-and-click adventures.

A very good classic graphic adventure with smart puzzles and a bizarre atmosphere that goes from Nancy Drew to Twin Peaks.

This is one of the best point-and-click adventures of the year, and Raw Fury should be immensely proud of their ability to bottle that retro lightning twice.

Kathy Rain is a really exciting point 'n' click adventure that every fan of eerie and dark adventures should play, even if it is hard for some to swallow the pill of the AGS engine.

This is one of the best traditional adventures we've played this year. Long and well designed, it's a great choice for those who miss this genre.

I will admit that it took me some time to really get into Kathy’s story, but once I reached past the initial pieces, I was soon hooked. As the plot deepened, I found myself captivated and driven to finish the game and see what lay ahead.

Despite the complete curveball the plot gradually throws at you as it moves along, Kathy Rain is a great adventure game with a story that easily gets you hooked and a mystery filled with a grade-A level of challenge to tackle.

Its story and some characters might not feel as fleshed out as they could be, but its main character has a surprising depth and the world here is certainly immersive. Put that alongside some solid puzzling, voice acting and a great style and you’ve got a great little point and click adventure that is not to be missed.

Kathy Rain is a delightful little adventure game to add to the massive pile of fun adventure games released in the last couple of months.

For all the problems I've outlined, I haven't enjoyed an AGS adventure this much in quite some time. The end might not satisfy, but the journey is a hell of a ride.

It’s not every day that a video game surprises me, and that is exactly what’s happened here. Kathy Rain is engrossing for nearly all of its admittedly modest running time, even when it takes quirky trips into left field. It may wear its inspirations on its sleeve, but that makes it no less likeable or entertaining.

Kathy Rain is an great adventure, that combines a vintage look to an intense and strong story. Given the quality of the plot and the variety of puzzles, we can forgive the presence of some stereotypical characters.

A fairly brief game that's worth the time to play, but only if you can find answers for when you get stuck.

It's not necessary to go to LucasArts or Sierra for a bit of nostalgia. Kathy Rain is a great modern classic point-and-click adventure that fits perfectly in line with Blackwell, Gemini Rue and Shardlight.

The pacing of the narrative works well and kept me wanting to push forward and find out more. I would certainly recommend this game if you like point and click adventure games or like narrative driven games that have slightly darker and mature themes, but still manages to have moments of humour.

While it still carries some common adventure game problems, Kathy Rain acts as a nice update to the genre that still looks like a product of the '90s. Adventure game veterans and newcomers should find a lot to love with this one.

Kathy Rain tells a satisfying story, but if I hadn't been reviewing it, I'm not sure I would have stuck around long enough for it to hook me.

Mediocrity in every way. The developers of Kathy Rain should have realized early on that they are unable to create a work of art with interesting supernatural elements and human emotions.

  1. I think the ending could have been better embellished, provided a little more closure and be a bit less rushed. And gosh does it desperately need speeding up a mite. But I had a splendid time with Kathy Rain, and thoroughly enjoyed a game where I couldn’t see where it might be heading. Kathy proves a complex and interesting character, and, well, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. Which is the simplest recommendation of them all.

It came as no surprise to me the fact Kathy Rain got such low ratings on Metacritic, and I´m not only refering to the user´s critics. Well,It came as no surprise to me the fact Kathy Rain got such low ratings on Metacritic, and I´m not only refering to the user´s critics. Well, "critics" wouldn´t be the right term, since so far (at the moment of writing this review) there are a only 2 proper user reviews, and both recognize the game properly. If anyone reading this wants to check how the actual public received Kathy Rain just visit the Steam store webpage. Full Review »

Kathy Rain is a really good point'n'click adventure game with good writing, interesting characters and strong voice acting. It is a vivid example of the fact that adventure games don't need stellar graphics and can thrive on story and atmosphere alone.

One thing I was afraid of when I started playing is that the main character seemed like a product of a Mary Sue syndrome. She is a strong, college girl, a biker, a smart mouth and, of course, pretty. But the creator is a dude, so the theory doesn't stick. At least the character is consequential in her actions throughout the game.

I wrote earlier that the game doesn't have stellar graphics and I stand by it. It doesn't change the fact, though, that Kathy Rain boasts some of the best pixel art in the last several years. Same goes for the sound. Voice acting is quite good and seems very well implemented for an indie game.

All in all Kathy Rain is a recommendable title. Surely not the best adventure game ever, but definitely one of the few pearls in the last half-a-decade. With a low asking price it's a treat for any adventure gamer out there.
