Huntdown takes you back to the days of classic arcade 2D action games but utilizes modern tools to perfect the genre. From the beginning to the end, this game is an absolute thrill. The attention to detail in the environments and the ever-changing rollout of enemies play a huge part in keeping each moment of gameplay fresh with a high level of intensity. You might lose track of character once or twice in the carnage and die, but that just means you get to go back to the nearest checkpoint and destroy everything again.

Action sequences aren’t all just a case of spraying and praying either, a lot of the game looks like that, but you need to approach things in a more considered matter if you want to actually survive. There’s a constant cycle of fun decisions to make in your weapon choices, movement options, and tactical decisions, and they all elevate Huntdown far above many other run and gunners.

So what makes Huntdown so great? It’s the satisfaction. It’s the way the tiny pixelated people burst into flame when you roast them with a stolen flamethrower; it’s the bits of meat scattering across the screen when a cluster grenade you’ve thrown pulverizes your enemies. It’s the rage you feel when the boss you’ve spent 45 minutes trying to defeat kills you when he has 1 hp left. It’s the elation you feel when you finally beat him.

Huntdown may not appeal to everyone, but if you have a soft spot for 16-bit retro shooters and '80s action movies (or if you happen to be a nostalgic gamer of a certain age), it's pretty much guaranteed to please. It's just as punishing and satisfying as you'd expect, and that's a very good thing.

Of course, in the world of Huntdown, you can find flaws, such as primitive AI, lack of upgrades or too similar characters, but this does not prevent you from enjoying a very bright and well-staged action.

Huntdown is a great example of intense old-fashioned action and bad one-liners, it just has the flaw to last as long as a single shot. Tasteful, but short.

Huntdown is definitely aiming in "emulating" the scenery, brutality, and b-movie aesthetic of the 80s action movies, but from the lenses of an 16-bit, pixel art game that would fit in perfectly in the arcade cabinets of their golden age. Need we say more? Just enjoy its simplistic albeit utterly enjoyable action.

PROS: 3 different characters + lots of different bosses + many weapons depending of the phase + funny and easy to play, varied stages and gameplay, smoothing movements + explosions + i like it shows the area as you forward and how it introduces foes (as 90's games), etc
CONS: nothing, the more i play the more i like it

The visuals in this game are outstanding! The background is full of life as you move from level to level. And the character animation flows vibrantly, bringing a lot of originality to each enemy and boss. So much so, that every encounter feels unique due to various attack patterns and comedic banter. Along with all this is the exception music and sounds, all of which feel ripped straight from an 80's sci-fi action movie. Even the cheesy one liners from the main characters fit the bill.

The 80's feel is no accident of course, as the Huntdown wears a lot of it's influences on it's sleeve. Yet at the same time, maintains it's own identity as the plot is centred around your bounty hunter thrown into a gang riddled sci-fi city. So what we get is something of a mix between the Warriors mashed together with Blade Runner and maybe a sprinkle of Total Recall. It should go without saying, the overall atmosphere creates the perfect setting for a 2D side scrolling shooter. The game-play is a high octane roller coaster, but not too chaotic that it becomes overwhelming. Once pumping through mass amount of enemies in each level, you are met with a boss fight that requires you to learn attack patterns on the fly. It all contains the right balance of challenge and fun, making this a stand out of the genre.

Everything this title sets out to do, it does brilliantly! Full of humour, personality and solid game-play, this is a must for anyone looking to jump into a new 2D shooter. A lot of fun alone or co-op with a mate.

Its gameplay is fun and addictive. There are 20 levels in total and each has a boss to defeat at the end. Every single level introduces something new - an interesting set piece, enemies, enviroments, weapons, etc. The game manages to stay fresh all the way through its 5,5 hours runtime.

The bosses feel distinct and unique which is quite an achievement for a game that has so many of them. The difficulty is very finely tuned. The game never feels outright unfair - it's always challenging but fair and it's always possible to progress forward by utilising the required strategies and adapting to the given situations. Also, the difficulty curve is excellent, the game gets harder and harder by every level by just the right amount.

However, I would still do not really rate this game higher than 8.. Because while I can't think of any wortwhile negatives about it in terms of how it plays, how's the music and atmosphere, etc., I simply feel that the game wasn't fun enough - at least for me - to deseve a 10 out of 10 rating. I had fun with it, it was good and enoyable, but nothing really standout, if that makes sense. That's why my final verdict is an 8 out of 10.
