    There's nothing I can say which hasn't already been said. I've had my Vive since it first launched, and I've played a lot of VR games in that time. This game makes everything else I've played (with the exception of BeatSaber) seem obsolete by comparison. It is simply the best VR game ever made, and one of the best video games I've ever experienced. The gameplay is intuitive and immersive,There's nothing I can say which hasn't already been said. I've had my Vive since it first launched, and I've played a lot of VR games in that time. This game makes everything else I've played (with the exception of BeatSaber) seem obsolete by comparison. It is simply the best VR game ever made, and one of the best video games I've ever experienced. The gameplay is intuitive and immersive, I never had any issues moving around or grabbing objects. The combat is exhilarating and terrifying, I've never been more scared by a game. The graphics, even on my low settings, are the best of any VR title. In these regards and many others, no other game even comes close. This is the killer app for VR and it is an absolute necessity for anyone with a headset.… Expand

    It's a beautiful game. I've finished it in about 19 hours and want more. :) Also I'd like next games in half-life universe to support VR. Thanks, Valve! :)

    This game is a solid 9.5, from start to finish you see Half-Life, you touch Half-Life and in the end you feel Half-Life.

    Fantastic over the top next gen graphics. Runs really well even on older systems (I have a GTX-970 i5-6400 with 32 GB RAM) I was concerned that it would struggle but not at all. Great characters.     Graphics, characters and animations look so real, story is awesome, gameplay is rewarding and fun. The best VR game in the market, one of the best game ever made. Easily lives up to crazy amount of hype Half-Life games have. This game is just FANTASTIC

    VALVE DID IT AGAIN !!!! Even after 13 years of inactivity in Half-Life world, they put the bar too high, this time in VR world. No words, amazing masterpiece and jewelery among VR games. We want more !!!!

    Visually this game is incredibly gorgeous and realistic, Functionally it's super enjoyable, and the characters and plot really seal the deal for it. One of the best games I have ever played

    I've been hesitant to get too excited after so many years. I felt completely immersed and could not stop pausing and enjoying the incredible design and level details. I could not stop saying "You clever f***ers" every time I found myself in a clearly well planned sequence.     I didn't play the game, but as far as I can tell from the twitch broadcast, the game is a masterpiece. I hope I can get VR and I can play Half Life Alyx. I hope I play Half Life 3 as it was released. (I am sorry for my English ) :)

    A level of polish, attention to detail, beauty, cohesion and writing yet unseen in VR, marred by unfortunately safe (as in not innovative) and repetitive gameplay. Nevertheless, a must buy for all VR owners, as its gameplay, too, gets much better in the second half.

    Could Ocarina have been made in 2d? Maybe with a ton of compromises, but its almost pointless to ask because the game was designed to take full advantage of what you can do in 3d. This is much like how it’s pointless to ask the possibility of a flat version of Alyx.

    Nearly every critic is rating Alyx a 9 out of 10. I understand their reasoning, but the truth is that this game is far, far better than any other game rated a 9 out of 10. Critics don’t want to give out a 10, which implies perfection, when anyone who plays areas of improvement here and there. The paradox with Alyx is that while imperfect, it is better than any game that has come before. I remember when Doom, Ocarina of Time, (and Half life 2 for that matter) came out, it was difficult to think of a single flaw. As gaming progressed, its now crystal clear that none of those games were anywhere close to perfect.

    In Alyx, there are brief moments when things feel clunky. Certain recent VR games have come out with more advance mechanics. The voice acting doesn’t always match the tone/feel of the player (probably my biggest gripe…I feel like the voice actress for Alyx hadn’t played the game…as everything is far more intense than her tone), you run into some invisible walls, etc.
    That being said, there is absolutely nothing like the core of this game. With VR, you can do things that are otherwise impossible with a mouse and keyboard…and you’re actually doing them! Popping up out of cover with 5 bullets left and one heart of health to take out the last combine soldier is one thing to experience flat…doing it in VR takes it to another level, and you’re left breathless.

    When you run away for cover in a normal video game, t’s a strategy. When you do it in Alyx, you FEEL the need to do it as a fight/flight response. Reloading in a normal videogame involves pressing a button. Your emotional state has nothing to do with the success/failure/speed of the action. In Alyx, all of that comes into play.

    The game is perfectly balanced and paced. They give you the exact amount of ammo you need…no more or no less. Every clip of ammo you find feels critical, and every shot you miss is devastating. I’m not sure if Valve cheats on this by determining how much ammo to place for each playthrough on the fly, but it doesn’t matter. Somehow, I never once totally ran out of ammo, and after every gunfight, I only had a handful of bullets left. Twice I used my last bullet on the last bad-guy.

    The sound is the best of any video game. The music, mixing, sound effects, are all perfect.

    The graphics, art direction, and lighting are the best of any video game. Everything is super detailed, and the world building is astounding.

    The story is classic Valve. If you liked the storytelling in Portal and Half-life games, you’ll love Alyx.

    I feel we will not see anything like Alyx for some time, and possibly the only developer that can pull something like this off is Valve. Think about how much money they’re leaving on the table making this VR only. If they get 100 percent of the addressable market, you’re talking about 2 million in sales. If this were a flat game, with the Half-Life name alone, 20 million in sales would be a disappointment. What other developer would leave over a billion dollars on the table developing a AAA game?    … Expand

    No, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, no, it's not perfect (but then, I think, that's not entirely possible with current gen VR headsets), but it shows what's possible with the current gen and pushes VR game quality to a new level.
    Also, it brought us a new story in the HL universe and promises even more.
    So, I give it 9 out of 10.

    --The game here IS the VR. The game is you doing things for real, figuring out how to aim and hip fire and reload and toss things. As opposed to having all that stripped away so you're just running in a circle managing cool downs.
    --The puzzles are actually puzzles; they have consistent logic, visual hints, and build in complexity over the campaign. As opposed to "find the one hidden punchable or climbable thing so you can progress".
    --The game is full of character. The infested Slavic city feels like real life 1990s Europe, the alien tech is creepy and awesome (cow brain computer puzzles!), and the characters and enemies grow on you as you see more of them.

    If you own VR I'm just preaching to the choir, because you've already bought Alyx. Enjoy =)    … Expand

The immersiveness of the environments is next level thanks to amazing graphics that perform way better than expected and really lovely audio that makes your skin crawl just enough to set the mood, but not enough to consider this a horror title. The game makes you look around, peek your head through holes, stick your hands in many a gross place; even just grabbing onto a door handle and slowly pulling it open feels unbelievably satsifying. Classic Valve story pacing is also on display here, with wonderful voice acting wit and fun moments to break apart the monotony. Nobody does it like Valve, and certainly nobody is doing anything like this in VR yet.

    This is already the best VR title ever released by virtue of its actual AAA level graphics, voice acting, story, and gameplay. In VR land you absolutely will not find a game as complete, well polished, and fun-- nothing even comes close. This might even be the best all-around single player title of 2020, it really is that good. The fact that VR can rival traditional games was a dream just a few months ago, to have that even be a possibility means Valve did something amazing here.

    There are very few things to actually criticize in this game; a few awkward tasks, a few silly limitations brought on by the new medium (no crowbar? wildly swinging your hand about is probably not a great idea), but all in all this game feels like a full length Half Life release. Sure, it's not Half Life 3, and if that disappoints you, not even an actual release of Half Life 3 would truly sate your unrealistic expectations.    … Expand

    I have been in the VR resurgence scene since early 2013. I've owned the Rift development kits 1 + 2, CV1, and been enjoying my Vive since not long after release. I've played everything there has been to play, watched the community and niche grow for years. I've talked to all the developers, and did some hobbyist development myself. I know how it all works. It's hard to be impressed with a lot of the output in recent years, let alone immersed. I have ridiculous standards at this point.

    And Half Life: Alyx is the best VR title I have ever played. It's nearly flawless. Do I wish there were more weapons? More modes? More enemy types? Absolutely. But the product, as it stands now, is flawless. This is the most robust engine I have seen for VR, ever. The embarrassingly-bad Boneworks cannot hold a candle to the sense of physical presence here. Sound is also a huge "presence"-enabler that is always, ALWAYS under-utilized in VR. It sounds so good here. So real. It's just wonderful. The ambiance you feel in every room is unrivaled. Incredible.

    And most of the negative reviews here are clearly from bitter little whiners who are mad that the new, official, canon HL game is on a format they don't have or can't afford. Don't be mad.    … Expand

    Valve have done it again. Half Life Alyx is a mind blowing experience. From the opening sequence it is like a learning experience between you and the game. And bit by bit, piece by piece, this wonderful jigsaw begins to emerge creating an image that is both beautiful and terrifying in equal measure. There is nothing currently in gaming which can compare to this game - NOTHING. LikeValve have done it again. Half Life Alyx is a mind blowing experience. From the opening sequence it is like a learning experience between you and the game. And bit by bit, piece by piece, this wonderful jigsaw begins to emerge creating an image that is both beautiful and terrifying in equal measure. There is nothing currently in gaming which can compare to this game - NOTHING. Like its predecessor, Half life Alyx will stand on its own for a long time to come and demonstrates what this medium has the potential to deliver. It isnt my favourite game of all time, but it is certainly one of the most memorable. I played on an Oculus and happy to report everything worked fine. You will benefit from an investment in hardware though. But it is worth saving up for - or camping round a friends who will let you play it. Simply brilliant.… Expand

Just like Half Life 2 this game could very well be a genre defining experience for Vr that HL2 was for First Person Shooters. A must buy and even must buy VR headset for game,finally the future of VR is looking bright again.     It's definitely 10/10. For a long time, I thought that Valve doesn't make HL3 as there is no way to make it revolutionary as HL2 and HL were at its time. But Valve found the way. They made it VR. It is the real HL, not just some fancy fake. I have a feeling that I am playing the old good HL but now I am inside. And yes, I am absolutely in love with the fact it's VR but not a normal game. IIt's definitely 10/10. For a long time, I thought that Valve doesn't make HL3 as there is no way to make it revolutionary as HL2 and HL were at its time. But Valve found the way. They made it VR. It is the real HL, not just some fancy fake. I have a feeling that I am playing the old good HL but now I am inside. And yes, I am absolutely in love with the fact it's VR but not a normal game. I am playing VR games from the very beginning and after all those years this the first real VR triple-A game title. I feel so natural inside that I constantly forget about turning and walking with a joystick but start to move around the room (and the one is very small :( ). It's fleshed out and immersive unlike any other VR game I've played. It feels like a full game, not a port, like every asset was made for this game in particular. While I'm playing I get fully enveloped in the world. The gameplay is revolutionary, the story is awesome & weird, the level of graphical fidelity and world intractability have never been seen before in a videogame.     This is now a post Half Life Alyx world. The only thing that will surpass this is if Valve decides to do it again and give us Half Life 3. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves because even if Valve never made another game, even if no other developer tries their hand at this level of production: we HAVE Half Life Alyx. It is a monument to the entire history of first person shooters and aThis is now a post Half Life Alyx world. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves because even if Valve never made another game, even if no other developer tries their hand at this level of production: we HAVE Half Life Alyx. It is a monument to the entire history of first person shooters and a link to their future. When you are playing Alyx the future is now.

    If I had to describe the style of this game I’d say it’s a mixture of Half Life 2 and Bioshock. It has the comrade talking over the radio narrative style, the spooky and detailed ruined city, and a much bigger focus on exploring the (gorgeous) environments you find yourself in. But far less combat than Bioshock (and most first person shooters for that matter), because it wants to strike a different balance between exploration, combat and puzzles. It is very linear like Half Life 2, but there’s so much freedom of movement within those rails, you won’t mind. Never has exploration and resource gathering been so fun. And the combat can be approached differently depending on how much you want to get into it. If you are feeling high energy and want to literally be ducking for cover and popping out behind pillars, changing cover, that’s all you. If you want to just stay in one spot and make it a shooting gallery that’s fine too. It’s VR! You’re in the game so it’s up to you how the shooting playstyle will be! But if you bring an adventurous spirit to the combat it adds a lot.

    I could go on and on but I’ll conclude by saying that Half Life Alyx is a masterpiece of game design. Extremely fun to play, beautiful to look at, and so future facing that we may not see another game of its quality for years. But I sure hope people try. HLA is the rosetta stone: the answers for what make a VR game work are here so I hope developers take the lessons they can from the project, and I pray that Source 2.0 will bolster the future of indie VR development henceforth, making Half Life Alyx’s release even more impactful than it already is (and that’s saying a lot).    … Expand

My only gripe at that point was the lack of titles available in VR.

    Valve has always been at the forefront of the industry pushing new technology down consumer's throats until they conform, and in retrospect we find that it's usually for the better. Innovation is nothing to belittle and there is so much of it in Half Life: Alyx. As a game, it's also quite excellent. The aesthetic is pleasingly dark and they push horror-esque scenes throughout the game to better effect than actual horror games. The UI is intuitive and throwing grenades or pulling things in with your gravity gloves works like a charm. The music is very fitting in all situations, and definitely adds a lot to the game. Not forgettable at all. The first time you go up against Combine soldiers and the music from the trailer kicks on, it feels great. Additionally, Valve has promised 3 more AAA VR titles in the coming years and so it's looking like my gripe about there being no titles is about to be addressed.

    Having said that the game doesn't come without a few downsides that I hope will be addressed.

    - No run feature in smooth locomotion mode
    - Sometimes the physics engine messes up a bit. Haven't had anything game breaking
    - When I started the game the first time, there was an audio issue where any action performed by characters was not heard, but ambient noises and music could be. A restart fixed it and I haven't had a similar problem since, though.
    - Not enough crowbar

    But all in all this is a wonderful title. If you can, get yourself some knuckles controllers for this game because they work infinitely better than the alternatives, and obviously better headsets will make the game more enjoyable.

    As a sidenote, I've only completed about half of the game so far but if anything serious changes my opinion about it as the game progresses I'll rewrite my review and reassess the score I gave it.    … Expand

    This is what become the gold standard in VR gaming for years to come. Is it perfect? No. Nothing is perfect. But having Valve release a Half-Life game again after decades, now even if I got contracted with COVID-19 I can die happily..

    A little history about myself. Half Life has been my favorite FPS since I picked up the crowbar for the first time. I played the original 1 month after released and replayed it countless times. I was one of those who purchased the HL2 collectors pack at Best Buy 4 days before they were supposed to have released it only to find I couldn't play it yet :( I have played every single player campaign multiple times up to HL2 Episode 2, which I did not beat until 3 days ago. All these years I swore I would not beat the E2 until a new game was here. All those years I waited and ignored the plot. I was spoiler free for all that time until 3 days ago. And now we have HL Alyx.....

    In no uncertain terms, this is a "Half Life" game. The decision to go VR doesn't surprise me. I definitely wasn't sure about it at first. I have been playing VR for 3+ years but only simulators like xPlane, DCS, Assetto Corsa etc... Never before had I played a FPS in VR until HLA.

    The only issue I had at first was fixed with the patch that enabled smooth turning. That was the only real gripe I had from a gameplay perspective.

    As for the game itself I have nothing really to add that many others haven't already discussed in depth.

Tech moves on and you can now buy low priced VR headsets and you don't need a PC that costs the earth. And to those moaning about the cost of entry, many of you will spend roughly the cost of an Index upgrading your phone every 12-18 months for an incrementally improved phone that is super iterative.

    And to those moaning about spending a lot of money just for one game, there are numerous amazing games to suit every taste such as: Beat Saber, Super Hot, Lone Echo, Robo Recall, Asgard’s Wrath, Skyrim VR, GTA V (modded), Moss, Gorn, Subnautica, Project Cars 2, Dirt Rally, Tetris Effect, Batman Arkham VR, Pinball FX2 VR, Eleven Table Tennis, Ghost Giant, I Expect You to Die, Battlezone, Rez Infinite, Thumper, Polybius, Star Trek Bridge Crew, Accounting+, Trover Saves the Universe, the Serious Sam games, Sairento, A Fisherman’s Tale, Doom 3 (modded), Bow to Blood, Elven Assassin, Virtual Virtual Reality, Transpose, Fujii, A Chair In a Room etc (I could carry on and on).

    Then there's the amazing experiences with many being free: Google Earth VR, VRChat, Rec Room, Daft Punk – One More Time, Museum of Other Realities, Museum of Fine Art, The Scream, Dreams of Dali, Mona Lisa Beyond the Glass, 1943 Berlin Blitz, Apollo 11, Anne Frank House, Dear Angelica, Bonfire, Nefetari, The Body VR: Journey Inside a Cell, The Wolves in the Walls, Crow: The Legend (to name but a few).

The puzzles in Alyx are good for VR but nothing too special, but the games biggest flaw is the movement and combat. The continuous movement is very slow and annoying there is no sprinting, or jumping. When in areas you have to backtrack the game forces youHalf Life Alyx sadly just feels like another half life DLC or mod, The story is excellent like any other half life game made by valve.     1 - Thrown objects do no damage, and no mele weapons. Un a game where I can so naturally pick up a brick, it's really a bit immersion breaking that I can't use it to it an enemy and do at least some damage.

    Very well polished and the most immersed I have ever been.

    Yes, some things could be improved (see the negative comments), but these are minor when compared to the whole.

    This game is a masterpiece.

    People comparing this negatively to Boneworks and WD:S&S are delusional. These two games are also great in their own right, but HL:A is on another level.

    Мне запомнился диалог между Аликс и Расселом , где шла речь о оценке жизни на Земле во время оккупации и до нее . Аликс оценила жизнь в оккупации на 2 балла , а Рассель поставил 6 баллов    HL:ALYX это условная виртуальная реальность , ничем не выдающийся сюжет и привычная непримечательная графика как и у всех других современных игр.     Графика ничем не выделяется и совершенно обыкновенная на фоне остальных современных игр . Эта проблема делает похожей игру на очередной кусок говна из "unity" в стиле HL2. Яркость цветов не подходит оккупированному , разрушенному , нищему миру . Архитектура , интерьер и дизайн несовместимы и не отражают последствия более 10 летней оккупации Земли . Мы не видим обилие мусора , грязи , плесени , паутины , ржавчины , костей , следов от пуль на стенах и других важных и неободимых элементов для "полного погружения" . Виртуальная реальность в данной игре является лишь набором слов и простым манипулированием сознанием людей и никакой речи о ней и быть не может. Вы не можете взаимодействовать со всеми предметами , например с каким-нибудь шкафом , горшком от цветов и с другими бытовыми вещами. Музыка в игре является ремиксом саундтреков из HL1 и HL2 , то есть оригинальной музыки тоже нет. Сюжет в игре очень слабый . Сцена с Gman в конце самая худшая . Просто сравните ее с последней сценой Gman из HL2:EP2. Атмосфера игры не имеет ничего общего с Half-life2 .

    К опытной компании Valve мы должны относиться строго и не прощать им грубейшие ошибки.
    HL:ALYX это полное разочарование для фанатов серии и очень слабый продукт для Valve . Абсолютно все в это игре сделано плохо . Окружение , среда , музыка . графика , возможности все лишино оригинальности и помимо прочего не соответствует миру Half-Life2.    … Expand

Beautiful graphics, amazing story and dialogue, and the atmosphere is perfect. Headcrabs, zombies, and barnacles are all so much more creepy than ever before, and the sound design is absolutely superb. ThisAn incredible addition to the Half-Life series. The tells are laughable, and in some cases you're given a full minute to prepare for being attacked. Its very slow. No keyboard and mouse support is another deal breaker. The game tries to pad these shortcomings with minor distractions (drawing peepeecacapoopoo on tram windows, throwing headcrabs into baskets) before the next scripted scene.

    And without spoiling the plot: established canon has been rewritten and ruined to push a side character. The series real protagonist is nowhere to be seen, and events are altered in favor of said side character. This is a slap in the face to longtime fans.

    In the midst of all this, where is Half Life 3? Where is the man who is free? God help us if that too becomes a terrible VR exclusive like this game.    … Expand

    Absolutely the best game I've ever played. Presence is real and continuous. You combat combines thinking you are fighting real people. It's a must try

    This is undoubtedly the VR killer app you've been waiting for. The atmosphere is just unmatched and the interactivity allows for never seen before gameplay mechanics. I can't wait for all the GIFs of the crazy stuff that people will come up with.

    No, I just don't get it. After all these years, we get the Alyx based VR version of this game. Most people were different expectations. For myself, I wanted to hear an announcement about HL3 or episode 3. At least a game that does not require VR for playing. They made a decision and that decision is wrong. All of HL fans feel the same way possibly. I suggest you should take a look at the Black Mesa instead of this. Thx to the developers like Crowbar Collective the real Half-life never gonna end.     Half-Life Alyx is proof that Valve is still at its best creatively. This emblematic franchise has been brought to virtual reality; in Alyx we enjoy an immersion never seen before, with comfortable and intuitive mechanics as well as excellent visuals and atmosphere that accompany this interesting adventure within the iconic saga.

    A special mention should be made of the game's dialog, mainly consisting of Alyx herself and Russel, a scientist who Alex remains in constant communication with throughout the game. Their relationship feels genuine, the conversations between them are enjoyable, and almost all of the intended comedic moments land perfectly, which is something most video games seem to have trouble with.
