This game is just fantastic. Clearly game of the year. Nice progression and dying doesn't feel as frustrating as in other rogue-likes. All the characters are pretty fleshed out and the House of Hades has so much character, and except for some so so voice-acting, this game is just perfect.

Super original in its look and overall mechanics. This game is extremely polished. After countless hours of play, I haven't run into a single glitch. Studios like this will eventually overrun the AAA cash cows, even with their micro transaction billions. This game is super fun and it's ability to adapt to you and make itself more challenging is insane.

My game of the year 2020 and one of my absolute favourites I played in 2020. The replayability of this game is insane, the story great and rewarding (the fact that evey time I spoke to someone they had something new to say even after 60+ hours game time amazes me) and the sound design and voice actors phenomenal. Highly recommend.

However after 40+ hours and 29 runs into the game but only to beat Hades 5 times, I feel a bit tired after so many runs with the same enemy and environment. Even the dialogue between Zagreus and all the gods seems lost its flavor, just repeating same blablabla again and again. Wish there is a easier mode to push the story goes on without so many failure.

Tried to use different weapons, but so far 4 out of 5 times shields are used to beat Hades. Feels like the weapons are fun to use but can be better balanced.

Overall a very satisfying experience, will get back to it from time to time, although probably won't spend too much time on it from now.

Hades is the story of Zagreus, a Teenager who “can’t even” with his dad and decides to run away and smash as much stuff as he can on his way out, a plan that is complicated a bit by him being the son of Hades and the house he tries to leave is the Underworld.

Hades is a roguelike whose isometric look look and combat mechanics owe a debt to Diablo, but instead of an endless climb up the equipment ladder, it feeds you precious story morsels to keep you motivated.

Hades is a Supergiant Games title, a pedigree that signifies incredible art direction, excellent writing and experimental storytelling.

Hades is the roguelike I’ve played for 150 hours straight during the last month.

Why, you ask? Let me count the reasons:

The combat is excellent: Zagreus, the protagonist, has two attack types, a dash, a spell and one to two ults, all of them easy to pull off, but only studious application of each will see you succeed. He starts each run with one of six very different weapons, and picks up powerups along the way that can alter the gameplay significantly. The system is easy to pick up but has a lot of hidden depth, the action is spectacular at times but almost always legible, each of the four biomes Zagreus can cross have their own, completely unique collection of foes and It. Just. Never. Gets. Old. I grew weary of Diablo combat, and Dead Cells combat. I never grew tired of Hades combat.

The plot and the writing are top notch, the best Supergiant Games has produced yet, and that’s saying something. The characters in here are now the definite interpretation of the Greek Pantheon for me (did I mention the setting of Hades is the Greek Pantheon?). All the characters consist only of a few still images and a ginormous amount of recorded lines, but they all come across as so human and deep and charming and likable… Ok, Ares comes across as the well-meaning but weird uncle who doesn’t get left alone with the kids much, and Zeus is a bit of a buffoon, but still, you just have to be charmed by even them. They are family. A very dysfunctional family, sure, and the stuff they all go through goes to some pretty dark places at times, but it all finds a heartwarming, hopeful finale.

Well, ok, Theseus is a dick.

But what’s really surprising, and what really feels like squaring the circle, is how tightly interwoven combat and story are. Little pieces of plot are dispensed throughout every run, and every death nets you a double dose, when Zagreus returns to the house of Dad and gets to talk to all his friends (and Hades). The action delightfully informs the plot, and the plot provides delicious context for the action. The pacing is excellent: Talky time provides the occasional breather during the high octane action, but it never overstays its welcome. It sounds like a contradiction, but they did pull it off: Hades really is a great roguelike with an excellent story.

The production values are through the roof: The art is creative, highly detailed, vibrant, wonderful. The soundtrack grabs you and never lets go. Logan Cunningham is the god of sexy voices, but all the other voice actors bring their A game, too.

Are there quibbles? Well, the poisonous enemies in the final realm can go die in a fire. And I’m a bit resentful that I had to activate Easy Mode to push through a certain difficulty spike. But that’s my personal failing.

TLDR: Supergiant Games did it again. Buy this game, play this game. And say Hi to my gal Artemis for me.

If you die, you start at the beginning and the world's map changes a little bit each time, which is meant to keep the people there from escaping. There are 5 worlds, with 4 bosses battles and 1 very good boy. The best part of the game are the characters and conversation. After beating the game for the first time after so many tries, I found out I have to do the same thing 10 more times to get the proper ending and 5-6 times more to get the final ending which is worth it but the game becomes progressively difficult. I was getting tired and just put up a mod and tried all the new blessings and beat the game which felt more fun. This is a great step forward for cross-platforming, even if it doesn’t involve actual multiplayer itself; but the point here is that a game as investing, frustrating yet rewarding as Hades has this function is definitely noteworthy and something other games are SURE to adopt in the future.

The story is great: layered even in its ‘repetitious’ Groundhog-Day-like storytelling, the gameplay is nice and punchy, and the soundtrack adds to the relentless challenge that is Hades. As the Son of Hades, Zagreus must escape his father’s clutches or forever suffer the Underworld’s all-encompassing grasp on the world of the dead. Zagreus must break the cycle and find out the truth about his mother, if he can even get himself there.

Hades is a blast with enough modern vibes and retro ones to make it an experience for newcomers and veteran hardcore gamers alike. Needless to say, this game is a CHALLENGE! But a fun one.

As your skills grow, you'll notice your weapon preferences change over time. I initially prefered the bow but now favour the sword. I'm giving the game an 8 not a 10 as I have beaten the final boss a few times and unsure what's left to do. I know there are bounties but I wished the game had more 'stuff' to do. Overall I've played this game for 50 hours and will play for another 50. Unlike what the bad reviews are saying, this game is not a grind. Took me 20 attempts to beat the final boss - but as I said, once you turn on God Mode, the more you die the better. Expand

I gave it a try. I hate repetition but there have been a few rougelites that I have enjoyed. This is not one of them. Most of the game is well made but the repetition is ridiculous. After the first couple of runs I was already bored with the first level. The poorly named "god mode" is the only reason I stuck it out. I can't bring myself to play anymore after a single completion.

Even Triple A studios barely offer this quality.

But let´s speak about the important part, the game.
It plays super smooth, every weapon feels very different, combined with the upgrades(boons) you get, every run feels different. There is not one overpowered way you have to play to be overpowered, there are many different combinations to make the best of your run.
Roguelite elements are great and make you try "just one more run".

But the superior part, which made it a solid 10, is the storytelling and progressing. Every run you learn something new about the situation, characters and the motives. It is superb storytelling in a genre, where most believed there is no actual way to progress a story.

I highly recommend this game to action fans.

You will discover secrets, reveals, twists and know your family, friends, acquaintances and other gods better. I must praise the characters and writing. The Greek legends are full of conflicts between the gods and those are all related to each other. This is transferred well into the game. They are like a family with a lot of problems. The game even won the literary Hugo Award to give you some perspective how good it is. For me this was amazing and I continued even after obtaining the platinum trophy to see the outcomes of some stories. It is well written, enjoyable and gives you always something to kept your interest. The gameplay is like I said a rouge-like RPG. You start each escape run with no abilities and advance through the rooms of the underworld. Each room has rewards like abilities, benefits, items or currencies. Sometimes you can chose between options. This was something I was worried about but it is not the weakness I thought. It is a true strength. In approx 100 runs I never encounter a truly weak set up. I discovered instead some amazing abilities, combinations and different options. Even some abilities I avoided first were good, some even worth reversing my opinion. For example: My least liked weapon became my favorite and the weapon I thought was best became my least used (The game has an interesting system in teasing you to chose different weapons). I admit that I use some abilities or better said set up more often but the different set ups keep it fresh. The next strength are the things you can unlock. There are so many helpful things. Be it new weapons, helpful rooms, appearing treasures, cosmetic set ups, abilities and bonuses. You always have new stuff to do or unlock. Rarely ever have I encounter a game that succeeds in keeping everything this fresh and enjoyable. Then there is the graphic. The art style is excellent and I like the hand draw graphics. For games like this I would always buy an artbook. The music is even better. You will encounter many awesome tracks and there are 2 characters who maybe give you some of the best songs in the game. To round up this experience I did not encounter a single serious bug or glitch. Overall this is my favorite game of the year and deserves my full praise. Never have I encountered a game that keeps being this refreshing from start to finish. Be it the story or gameplay everything is excellent and well thought out. Even the difficulty is correctly balanced as god mode gives you more resistance with each death until you don't die easily. A well thought out system. An easy 10/10 for me Expand

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
