This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has a pretty good story but absolutely garbage controls. It's pretty sad when Pong handles 1000 times better than this game. Also there's only 2 weapons even worth using and that's the spear and shield. The rest are complete trash. I made this account just so I could review this **** game. Expand

I basically don't understand why so many people love this terrible game! This game is so repeating and so exhausting to play! Every upgrading in this game seems so boring, as well as the story, the enemies, and the level design.
So why do so many people love this game? Ah, I got it, because they are the ones who like repetitive works, and they want to live a boring life!

I quite like this game. Lots of fun, addictive, lots of depth. Well worth the $ for the hours you'll get out of it. Good characters and great voice acting. I would give it an 8-9/10.

This is definitely my GOTY for 2020. It melds high action isometric gameplay, with a rewarding progression system (ironic, since you start from the beginning a lot) and an engaging melodramatic story.

Big fan of their previous games and expected another tame and short ~10 hour game. I WAS WRONG. I'm 50 hours in and I seriously cannot stop playing. This is far and away the game of the year. Best soundtrack, best combat, fantastic voice acting, and so so much replayability.

As far as I’m concerned this game is the GOTY. I got it on the Switch first and even after finishing EVERYTHING I was still craving more, so I had to buy it AGAIN on steam to get the achievements.
    - The story is amazing
    - The game play is snappy and fun - The weapons and boons create a lot of variety - Everything oozes charm - The presentation (music, environments, characters and ui)

    + addictive gameplay
+ different weapons and random skills a long the way force you to play differently
+ you can choose your own difficulty
    + funny banter and dialog

    - visually it can be a bit cluttered
    - Enemy attacks are not easy to read, dashing behind the enemy isn't always safe

At first I didn't want to buy this game as it seemed very cartoonish, but I was very wrong.
After I actually saw this game on my screen instead of twitch I was amazed how great and smooth everything looks.

This is easily one of the best games of the year.
    I give Hades
    a 9/10

Because there's a little too much RNG involved. When you clear a stage you will have several paths to choose (usually no more than 2, sometimes just one). Above every door you'll see what rewards await you in the next room, but you have no real impact on what kind of boons you will get throughout the whole run. This means you can get very lucky and receive all the best boons in one playthrough and considerably weaker boons in the next, which makes for a slightly frustrating gameplay sometimes. Expand

Hades is a roguelike action roleplaying game where you play as Prince Zagreus, son of Hades, and you are tired of life in the Underworld and want to defy your father by escaping. You take runs through the layers of the Underworld fighting all types of monsters clawing your way to the surface.
Along the way the other Olympians will be trying to aid you by bestowing upon you powers to strengthen your weapons and skills. All in attempts to help Zagreus join them on Mt. Olympus. The boons they bestow upon you are perfectly inline with their characters. Examples being; Zeus granting lightning, Aphrodite allowing chances to charm and weaken monsters, Dionysus can afflict hangover (my personal favorite perks).
There is an interwoven story in the game you discover while playing through escape attempts and increasing your bonds with the cast of characters including Gods, servants of Hades, and Greek heroes.
This game is a beautiful masterpiece that has been given numerous awards, not including game of the year by most publications.
I started playing in early release 2019 and played through most development of the game and extra features they added. Eventually leading to the full release in 2020 where the true ending was added.
It took me 72 successful escape attempts to finish the story and reach the true ending. There are still cosmetic upgrades I could chase, character relationships to increase and push for higher difficulty runs.

Hades is a masterclass on video game storytelling, and the best of its kind since Undertale reminded people that a video game can be funny, touching, endearing, and deep at the same time in 2015. What Hades does with beautiful art, a simple (but solid) core gameplay loop, and engaging characters in a great story is infinitely more than what most AAA games do with hundreds of developers, massive budgets, celebrity voice actors, and all of the top end graphics in the world.

Supergiant takes a genre of games that has been overdone to death, and with a clever story, makes the perfect blend of storytelling and gameplay. Where something like The Last of Us Part II completely segregates their story and gameplay at the end of their game, Hades embraces the nature of its story and embraces the resetting nature of the roguelite genre. The story cannot work without the gameplay, and the gameplay is nothing special without the story to drive it. It legitimately comes together in a way that pushes the entire medium forward and raises the bar for everyone else.

The gameplay is fast, fluid, and everything has the right amount of punch to be satisfying. I would give this game a 9.5 if I could, but since I'm unable to, I rounded up to the perfect score I don't think any game should get. The gameplay is where the only issue comes in. Enemies toward the end of the game become too spongy and the action can be hard to follow with all the particle effects. That can create some frustration, especially with some Pacts of Punishment later in the game. Those add to the particle effect mess, and while it really is beautiful to look at, it just becomes a tad too much to follow.

But each run is different and you can select items that can help shape your experience. You can favor Zeus for some area of effect damage, you can favor Athena to give yourself more survivability, or maybe you want to get some Poseidon effects in to shove enemies around. If you don't want any of those, you can use items that increase your health or starting currency for upgrades later in the run. With six different weapons, each with four different styles of play, there's a lot of fun to be had with the experimentation in each go.

There really doesn't feel like there's anything like it out right now. It's a $25 game that you can easily get fifty hours out of if you want to reach the epilogue. If you beat the game, you'll probably want to go that far to see the full completion of the awesome story. It's so much more engaging and the development behind it was way more ethical than any AAA title. It's more complete than a AAA title, too. I haven't encountered any noticeable bugs, which is a fantastic change of pace given the state of other games like Cyberpunk 2077 or just about any Ubisoft title.

Hades absolutely hits the nail on the head with every development philosophy Supergiant had in mind when creating it. It's without a doubt the best game of 2020, and that's admittedly a low bar, but it's such a bright spot to start the next decade of gaming with. There is really nothing else like it and it's another piece of quality work from a quality developer.

This game is what every rogue-like should be. A true masterpiece. Why? Here we go.

First of all, greek mythology is widely known and loved, and we can tell that the developers love it as well, because they put a huge amount of love in the story and in the game in general. The story is brilliant and it makes you want to start a new run as soon as you finished the last. The voice actors are simply brilliant. This might be the first rogue-like game where i love the level design from start to finish. The environment can be challenging, but only to the point where it doesn't become frustrating, they balanced it really well.

The variety of how you can play the game is huge. We start with one weapon, and then we can unlock 5 more, and unlock overall 4 aspects for each weapon, which change how they function. There are melee weapons, ranged weapons, slow weapons, fast weapons, there is one for everyone. Then on top of that we get the buffs (boons) from the gods on Olympus, which also allow us to create multiple builds for every weapon and every aspect of them.

Now someone might think, "oh well, i'm interested in this game but it looks to easy or too hard for me". They made sure that it's not an issue. There are multiple "difficulties" for this game. You can either play on normal or you can either active god mode or hell mode. God mode lowers the amount of damage you take as soon as you activate it, and then it increases everytime you die, up to 80%. Hell mode activates the pact of punishment (on normal and god mode it only activates once you do a full clear once) as soon as the game starts. These are there to give everyone further challenges and rewards from boss fights. And doesn't matter which difficulty you play on, our character will get permament upgrades from the mirror of night. These upgrades contain damage upgrade, cheat death mechanic, gives you more chance to recieve better buffs from the gods, you can reroll room rewards or even god buffs, gives you more mobility, etc.

I would recommend this game for everyone, even if you never played a rogulike before.

Hades is a roguelike action RPG developed and published by Supergiant Games. It set a new bar for roguelike games with amazing visuals, character development, and storyline. Hades does have a few minor issues that plague most roguelikes. But these don’t impact the overall experience of an amazingly great game.
