It's a puzzle game - and as another reviewer has pointed out - the puzzles aren't solvable unless you're prepared to grind away for hours - there's no logic to the solutions, just trial and error.
The game is not entertaining or fast enough to encourage the tedious repetition of the same scenarios required to find solutions - after 20 minutes or so you think you're missing the point and you Google up a walkthrough to find a way forward. When you can't work out what to do next, you consider going back to the walkthrough - but you quickly realize that you haven't missed any fundamental instructions or concepts and that this is the way the game is made. Since progressing by following someone else's instructions is entirely pointless - you stop playing.
Despite recent criticisms I've found Metacritic's professional and user reviews useful in deciding where to spend my leisure time and money - but something smells very bad about the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this game...

This game is lauded through history, but therein lies its problem. It is from an age when, hard, convoluted, often illogical puzzles were seen as good. It is very easy to get lost, you might even need a notepad.
So, like so many games it has a hype machine cranking up already, and reviews all banging on about the originality of the original not lost etc etc etc. Funny story etc etc.

So, like so many games it has a hype machine cranking up already, and reviews all banging on about the originality of the original not lost etc etc etc. Funny story etc etc. That's all fine, of course, but for someone like me who can't be bothered to think of all the weird possible connections between objects on the screen etc, and how things connect across scenes, who feels somehow cheated if I need to google an answer and look at a walkthrough... well, I know I am not really ever going to finish it and well, I have far too many games I got bored of and didn't finish. Most of those are because they got insanely hardor I had a break and forgot the myriad of controls. This time it is because I just won't have the patience to figure out every possible weird answer to every puzzle. In truth, I think because it wasn't published for so many years, that makes this game much more of a 'classic' and more easy to hype up. The stylised design has stood the test of time very well indeed, but... well... I'll stick with 'adventure' games like ethan carter and Brothers or more logical and simple puzzle games like Talos or Portal.

Why is this getting such a high score? Yes, the base game is great, but as a remaster this is pretty poor. The biggest improvement is the added mouse controls, which was provided as a community mod for the original game about a year and a half before this remaster came out.

The backgrounds are exactly the same and completely untouched. Only a handful of the 3D textures have been re-created to look good in HD. I wouldn't care if this was a GoG re-release, but re-releasing it in 2015 and slapping a "Remaster" label on it calls for more than "compatibility patch". This is brutal.

Never got very far past the beginning in the original game, couldn't figure out what to do next. A decade or so later, never got very far past the beginning in the remastered game, couldn't figure out what to do next. Honestly I don't feel much motivation to try. This is no RealMyst for Myst fans or Black Mesa for Half-Life fans. The puzzles are way way too random, illogical, convoluted. At first I was really digging the art style, writing, and atmosphere, then I got really stuck after trying everything I could think of. I looked up what to do online, and it was just such random ridiculous stuff there were no clues for, there was no "Aha!" moment.

First: I am rating this "port", or "remaster", however you want to call it.

This great game doesn't deserve such a loveless port-
the controlls via a Xbox360 gamepad is a drag too - unlike with mouse controls you never know, which end of the screen is going to another scene. You have to find out the hard way after hours (exaggerating) of running around.

I will play devil's advocate and I am going to say that I didn't like this game. First of all, the graphics made me feel bored even though I played the "Remastered Edition". Secondly, the puzzles were tedious and annoying. Last but not least, as you know if a movie/game etc. becomes very popular, some people tend to dislike these things. Charming as the characters are, I found Grim Fandango’s gameplay intermittently grating. Some of the puzzles in the game are so idiosyncratic that they seem predicated less on the deployment of practical reasoning than on the achievement of a mystical mind-meld with the game’s project lead, Tim Schafer, and the rest of the developers.

Even if the mechanisms of this game seem a little dated now, we're reminded how the story and its characters are timeless in their good humour and quality, and in that respect, this Remaster should hold almost as much joy for newcomers as it does for returning fans.

Grim Fandango is one of the greatest adventure games ever made. The remastered edition pays tribute to the original and modernizes only the essential. Now the controls are working, so the whole package is ready to take over the world. [Feb 2015]
