In Grim Fandango Remastered, one of the best games of all time has been resurrected for modern audiences. It’s still a classic, and it absolutely belongs on every gamer’s (digital) shelf.

Every single piece of Grim Fandango Remastered fits with each other in order to form this perfect gaming puzzle. Amazing art direction, top-notch writing, superb adventure gameplay, and a wonderful sense of atmosphere often lost in modern games.

Grim Fandango is one of the greatest adventure games ever made. The remastered edition pays tribute to the original and modernizes only the essential. Now the controls are working, so the whole package is ready to take over the world. [Feb 2015]

Time has done little to diminish Grim Fandango’s beauty or relevance. It is an adventure game not to be missed.

Gorgeously enough, the simplistic notion that this is merely a product of someone’s pleasantly twisted imagination overqualifies as entertainment. It's fu.king art and I love it.

Every time I recall my favourite scenes from Grim Fandango I’m flabbergasted by how much life the developers breathed into their story about the land of the dead. It’s just throbbing with energy and creativity and it’s one of the most spectacular games I’ve ever come across. [03/2014, p.60]

More of a spit-polish than a full remaster, but that doesn't matter. Grim Fandango remains a genre high point. [March 2015, p.64]

Fandango is the best adventure game ever made and this remaster means a new generation of gamers is able to play it. The newly added directors commentary and controls are fresh, but the game itself stays true to its original.

You would complain on the not-remade backgrounds and cutscenes. You would complain on the stretched 16:9 option. You would, but you shouldn't: Grim Fandango Remastered is a great effort of bringing back one of the best adventure games ever made, with nice improvements and a really interesting dev commentary.

If you are an adventurer from past times, here is the perfect opportunity to pay tribute. If you’re new: play it. Even if you’re stuck, or need a walkthrough, don’t worry: everybody here is just as dead as you!

Grim Fandango represents the pinnacle of 90s adventure games and is arguably the finest videogame noir created to date. This remastered edition stays largely faithful to the source material, preserving it in digital form with some worthwhile extras and tasteful improvements.

The story, world, voice acting, music, script and style are some of the best gaming has to offer, rivaling the best animated movies. The puzzles are 80% superb, best the adventure genre can do, and 20% frustrating as all hell. Nevertheless that’s an absolutely minor thing in the grand scheme of things, and the world and writing are so incredible you’ll let any trial-and-error moments slide.

It retains that spark of ingenuity, that offbeat quirkiness which keeps its design unconventionally timeless.

Although perhaps more could have been done, Double Fine have implemented a set of changes that make a truly classic title more palatable to the modern gamer.

Clever and engaging, funny and exciting. An Adventure in the typical LucasArts tradition and thus a piece of video game history that is worth seeing.

Grim Fandango Remastered still feels dated at some points, but the fantastic atmosphere, brilliant cast and its rock solid dialogue will make you accept it.

It's just remaster, not a fully fledged remake. Keeping that in mind, I had a great time with the new, old Grim Fandango: Bursting with creativity, lovable characters and a jaw-dropping soundtrack, the game still stands as one of the best in the genre - especially with its vastly improved controls. A shame that the puzzle design did not age as well as the incredible story.

Even if the mechanisms of this game seem a little dated now, we're reminded how the story and its characters are timeless in their good humour and quality, and in that respect, this Remaster should hold almost as much joy for newcomers as it does for returning fans.

Ultimately, though, its age has only given it a new layer of context that seems to enhance its fun and intrigue. Grim Fandango remains one of the best of its class and a wonderfully witty noir adventure.

Grim Fandango doesn't live off of nostalgia alone. It's a great game on its own right and not at all out of place today.

This remastered version does not fully satisfy our desire for a proper comeback of Manny Calavera, nor is worthy of a myth like Grim Fandango. At least it gives us the opportunity to re-live an unforgettable journey in the Land of the Dead, filled with intrigue, suspense and memorable characters.

Bringing Grim Fandango back to the land of the dead is a welcoming move. LucasArts' classic 3D adventure is still very entertaining due to the atmospheric music, the charming characters, the intense story and the unique expression. The remastered version improves the 3D models with updated graphics, but sadly this is not true for the cinematic cutscenes and all backgrounds in the game. They are identical to the original version presented in 4:3 aspect ratio and seems rather blurry compared to the 3D models.

Even though the adventure genre nowadays is filled with great games, Grim Fandango feels almost as good as it did 1998. The remastered version has some technical flaws that should’ve been taken care of and the puzzles aren’t always on top, but besides that this is a game that no one should miss. Easily one of the best adventures of all time.

Even when it stumbles, it stands as a fine reminder of why LucasArts at its prime was seen as the industry at its best, and few other adventures have deservedly gathered so much affection. It was an instant classic back in 1998. It's still very much a journey worth taking today, albeit ideally with a walkthrough.

Although the term 'remastered' is too generous in this case, the refreshed Grim Fandango is still a great adventure game, even if a bit outdated by today's standards.

It’s loaded with some of the best adventure game one liners; a gripping, winding plot that only slips up three quarters of the way through the game, and then improves drastically afterward; and a vibrant, bizarre world that, for all its weirdness, is extremely easy to get attached to. It’s just not a very impressive remaster.

The combination of story, presentation, and atmosphere come together in perfect harmony to offer arguably one of the best point-and-click adventure games ever created. With that said, I was a bit disappointed to see the Grim Fandango not get the full remastered treatment I feel it should have received.

Charming as the characters are, I found Grim Fandango’s gameplay intermittently grating. Some of the puzzles in the game are so idiosyncratic that they seem predicated less on the deployment of practical reasoning than on the achievement of a mystical mind-meld with the game’s project lead, Tim Schafer, and the rest of the developers.

Nostalgia aside, this is still one of the best adventure games ever created. However, I've noticed two differing styles of understandingNostalgia aside, this is still one of the best adventure games ever created. However, I've noticed two differing styles of understanding this...

1.) Those who expect a very logical, concise set of puzzles, with a nice wrapping of a story around it.
2.) Those who want to explore the nuances of the game. The style. The ambiance. The way that the game is structured. The "reading between the lines" of the morals, and themes of the story itself...

If you're in category #1? Avoid this game at all costs. The game is about the sum of the parts being greater than an equal to the whole. (Much in the same way that Animal Farm is much more than just a story about talking animals running amok...) Some of the puzzles are just...odd. They don't seem to make 100% logical sense, and the game certainly isn't going to highlight the puzzle piece with a glowing exclamation point, or halo to let you know what you've missed.

But...if you're in the second category, and you haven't played this yet? Then why, oh why, in the name of all things holy or not, are you even bothering to read this review? Get on your favorite platform, and get this ASAP. You'll be rewarded with the texture, style, and nuance of a finely crafted masterpiece.

Playing Grim Fandango isn't about the jaw dropping graphics, or the smooth textures, or the latest in whiz-bang technology. (Which is what a lot of people who aren't steeped in the adventure genre don't quite get...) This game is about the Land of the Dead. It's about Manny Calavera. It's about the questions that plague everyone regarding life...death...and beyond.

The remaster hardly remastered anything at all. The backgrounds are still prerendered, propably in higher resolution. So are the cutscenes. It looks even morse now with the crisp colourful 3d models standing out of the scenery. Textures are still with minimalistic details. I expected more, and am disappointed.
But overall - the game is brilliant, but remaster is more of a re-packaging of the same thing.

It is from an age when, hard, convoluted, often illogical puzzles were seen as good. It is very easy to get lost, you might even need a notepad.
So, like so many games it has a hype machine cranking up already, and reviews all banging on about the originality of the original not lost etc etc etc. Funny story etc etc. That's all fine, of course, but for someone like me who can't be bothered to think of all the weird possible connections between objects on the screen etc, and how things connect across scenes, who feels somehow cheated if I need to google an answer and look at a walkthrough... well, I know I am not really ever going to finish it and well, I have far too many games I got bored of and didn't finish. Most of those are because they got insanely hardor I had a break and forgot the myriad of controls. This time it is because I just won't have the patience to figure out every possible weird answer to every puzzle. In truth, I think because it wasn't published for so many years, that makes this game much more of a 'classic' and more easy to hype up. The stylised design has stood the test of time very well indeed, but... well... I'll stick with 'adventure' games like ethan carter and Brothers or more logical and simple puzzle games like Talos or Portal.
