  • Summary: Greak: Memories of Azur is a side scrolling single-player game with hand-drawn animations. You will take the role of three siblings: Greak, Adara and Raydel to guide them through the lands of Azur. Alternate control between them and use their unique abilities to escape from the Urlag invasion.

    The only short comings of the game are the lack of situational music and ambient background noise. This didn’t dampen my spirits too much however as the core gameplay and story had me too immersed to miss it very much. Just that the experience would have been complete with just a little more icing on the cake. Greak is a fairly affordable game on Steam also, so if you’re in the market for a game like Ori without the price tag before sales. Pickup Greak, it’s a wonderfully cute game perfect for winding down after work or ignoring the stresses of Covid lockdowns.

    Greak: Memories of Azur is a truly charming little title that fans of puzzle and action games will really enjoy. Its unique mechanics of controlling the three siblings at once paid off for the most part, even if it became more frustrating during boss fights. While the game’s restrictive inventory and lack of area maps wasn’t ideal, it didn’t prevent the gorgeous hand-drawn world and enchanting soundtrack from drawing me right into the experience. Greak: Memories of Azur is fun, very easy to like, and definitely worth checking out.

    Greak: Memories of Azure has a gorgeous presentation and world to discover, but the added features, although unique, require a specific type of adventure fan to enjoy. Things just become overly confusing, and my muscle memory never seemed to adapt to the constant demand for accessing the menu and switching between characters. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game, but some elements are largely unnecessary.

    By himself, Greak feels like a dull carbon copy of so many protagonists from recent action-exploration games, namely Hollow Knight. Having Adara and Raydel eventually accompany him, so that you’re simultaneously controlling three characters, adds a superficially more creative, if awkward, layer to the game, a multi-character gimmick that Greak never fully utilizes. But the puzzles tend toward the rote, as in one character needing to hold down a pressure plate or crank open a door to facilitate the path forward for everyone in the group.

    So what were the weak points of the game? First of all, the biggest problem is that it is difficult to play with the mouse and keyboard. Difficult to manage 3 characters at the same time, especially in boss battles. Inventory capacity is very low. In general, the variety of items in the game is less. Most of the time, we don't even use the skills we learned. Cooking is good but variety is less. Quests are few. I would like more side quests. The story presentation is good, but it's too short and doesn't satisfy the ending. I would love to see a good boss fight at the end. But still it was a good game. Greak: Memories of Azur è una piccola gemma dedicata agli amanti dei metroidvania, che combina atmosfere fiabesche, ambientazioni affascinanti e una storia classicamente fantasy di scontri tra mostri ed eroi.

    La Navegante Entertainment ci prende per mano e ci accompagna quindi in un viaggio memorabile nei panni di Greak, l’intrepido spadaccino protagonista, e i suoi due fratelli Adara e Raydel. Insieme dovranno affrontare la Piaga e gli Urlag, invasori spietati che hanno costretto alla fuga il pacifico e prospero popolo dei Courine, e riportare l’ordine e la quiete su Azur.
    Il mondo di gioco è estremamente dettagliato, più di quanto ci si potrebbe aspettare dal primo titolo di una casa indipendente. Gli sfondi, i personaggi e le animazioni sono curatissimi, tutti disegnati a mano con uno stile inconfondibile. Il titolo potrebbe ricordare Child of Light nella scelta delle tonalità pastello e dei contrasti tra ambienti luminosi e bui. Ogni personaggio secondario ha design e animazioni unici che danno spessore e carattere anche alle semplici comparse.

    Anche la colonna sonora del gioco è accattivante e molto azzeccata, e insieme agli effetti sonori ben bilanciati contribuisce all’immersione completa nell’ambientazione. Il gioco dispone di localizzazione in numerose lingue, tra cui l’italiano, per permettere anche a chi non ama giocare in inglese di apprezzare gli sviluppi di trama e i dialoghi con i personaggi.

    Sebbene la trama principale sia abbastanza lineare e non spicchi per l’estrema originalità, il gioco è ricco di missioni secondarie, esplorazione facoltativa e obiettivi opzionali che permettono ai più curiosi di scoprire informazioni aggiuntive sul mondo, sulla sua storia e sui suoi abitanti; il giocatore ha a disposizione un diario in cui vengono appuntate le quest ogni volta che se ne accetta una. Inoltre, ogni area presenta una mappa associata che permette di orientarsi facilmente anche in ambienti nuovi.

    Il sistema di gioco è forse la scelta più ambiziosa dello studio, poiché il giocatore avrà il controllo, una volta riuniti i tre fratelli, di tutti i protagonisti contemporaneamente. Sarà possibile muoversi in maniera sincronizzata oppure selezionarne uno alla volta, approfittando delle abilità specifiche di ognuno per superare puzzle ed enigmi e progredire nell’esplorazione. Ai veterani potrebbe ricordare Trine, ma l’approccio è comunque abbastanza diverso da potersi considerare originale.
    Greak ha a disposizione il doppio salto, nuotare e trattenere il respiro per un po’. Raydel è l’unico a disporre di uno scudo per assorbire i colpi, è il più forte dei tre, ma non è in grado di nuotare. Adara sfrutta i suoi poteri magici per fluttuare e può trattenere il respiro più a lungo di Greak; per di più utilizza proiettili di energia illimitati per colpire dalla distanza. Le componenti di platforming e puzzle ambientali sono quindi ben pensate dalla Navegante, e integrate fluidamente nell’esperienza di gioco.

    Le bossfight sono svolte da tutti e tre i personaggi contemporaneamente, ma se il micromanagement risulta tedioso durante le battaglie più complesse, gli sviluppatori hanno aggiunto la possibilità di rendere invulnerabili i personaggi che non sono sotto il controllo diretto del giocatore, in modo da evitare sconfitte di natura puramente meccanica. I tre protagonisti, infatti, falliscono la loro missione anche se solo uno dei tre muore.    … Expand

It can become difficult during combat, but the game rarely throws you in a situation where you can't focus on one character while leaving the other(s) out of harm's way. My main gripe is that the map is useless. It's not a full on metroidvania, but there's enough backtracking and exploration that I found myself playing it in that style and a real map would have been appreciated.
    I found the story simple and effective. I assume it is more deep and intricate, but I spammed through most of the dialogue. I don't mind some reading in my games, but every time you interact with a character it's like you get their life story. It's a bit much.
    But overall, I really enjoyed this game. It's a bit of a hidden gem and I'm excited to see where they take it (hopefully) in a sequel.    … Expand

    Mais malgré un chara design et des graphismes soignés le jeu essaye de mélanger plateforme, habileté, combat et réflexion avec des énigmes trop fréquentes pour pouvoir progresser correctement.
    Le tout ne rend pas très bien en tout cas pour moi, si on s'amuse les premières heures on est vite frustré car on ne peut profiter de vraies phases de combat ni de vraies phases plateformes, le tout dans des environnements labyrinthiques sans mini map et avec trop d'énigmes.
    De plus il faudra gérer plusieurs persos en même temps ou chacun leur tour ce qui est vraiment ennuyeux    … Expand
