I've been playing this game for a few days now but I've decided to quit. With their rate of wishes, I've got nothing but 4 stars. I didn't want to top-up and get the 5 star not of my choices, so I've decided to quit. You can grind with the starting characters but it takes alot of time and some of the 5 star characters just made the game easier. Sadly, this still has alot of bugs during my time of play. Still its a china company so its typical they want you to top up in-game currencies and spin the gacha. Some of the mechanics and interface are terrible. Puzzle-wise its simple but time-consuming. One thing that I hate about this game is that they include gacha in their decks which make characters in this game scarce. Those big bosses was unbeatable late-game without good characters/ weapons.

In conclusion, you get the character the wanted, then its playable. If u get rubbish like I do, its unplayable. Pretty much a gamble/grind fest. The whole system just doesn't make sense for me. So that's a negative.

This is something even the game itself doesn't know and is what's confused most of the people around and is what created the first problem. Genshin has severe identity crisis. It's a JRPG? It's a Mobile gacha game? It's a AAA title aimed for all?

The game tried to find something in between all this and created the mess we see today.

You see people trying to defend the game by saying "This is a Gacha game. This is how it works. This is how it's been for years." Now all these things are complete BS.

Genshin isn't and was never intended to be your typical mobile gacha. It tried to appeal to the mainstream audience. The instant Genshin was being developed for PC, Switch and PS4 it rose above your typical Gacha game. It wanted to cater to the mainstream crowd. Now this creates the very big problem that is the difference between Mainstream gamers like PC, PS4, Switch and Gacha Addict mobile market. While gacha addicted mobile gamers are used to being fcked over by **** practices by those companies, the mainstream crowd is different. Some of them are completely new to the gacha system. Just accept the fact that gacha is a very bad monetization model, some games have implemented it in a nicer way which actually isn't bad, but Genshin monetization is just straight up ridiculous.

Genshin was promoted as JRPG from the very beginning instead of being your usual gacha mobile game. This is where most of the mainstream players expectations shattered. Things like being limited by stamina system for play is a norm practice in mobile games(Not all games do this but most of them do) BUT it's not in the mainstream market and this is something which is not acceptable when you go for broader market. You can't just expect them to conform to your **** stamina system and be all happy happy. You're gonna get backlash.

Resin(this absolute piece of **** item in Genshin)

Resin system is just ridiculous. While being already bad in the first place, it's way worse compared to even the stamina system of other mobile gacha games. Almost 95% of the stuff you do in the game is locked behind resin system. You wanna farm Mora? go spend resin, you wanna farm exp? go spend resin, you wanna farm artifacts? go spend resin, you wanna farm upgrade materials? go spend resin. What's even more ridiculous is the amount you need per dungeons, bosses and the amount you get.

Resin is capped at 120. So you can run hypostasis 3 times and poof it's gone. Once you get to higher level even running hypostasis 3 times doesn't give you enough material to level up your character. The regen rate is also crap 1 resin per 8 minutes.

-Uninspired this is one of the biggest gripe i had with the game ,this might very well be the most uninspired game of this generation ,which says alot since this generation is so filled with uninspired games even worse than dark souls clone ,this however takes it to ridiculous heights even the damn map looks almost exactly the same as Botw ,it tries to steal so many gameplay mechanics from breath of the wild and sure this really does sound great on paper it ultimately fails miserably i will explain later on in this review ,it even steals some animations from nier automata and it has an uninspired anime artstyle to pander to weebs because they are the ultimate simps who will spend their money on an anime waifu.

-Gameplay mechanics are shallow and just dont work well together ,like the characters can do all sorts of flashy moves but god forbid if they sprint or climb their stamina will deplete ,this is kind of like the opposite of what nintendo does ,nintendo adds few gameplay mechanics and build an entire game around it ,GI however just shoehornes mechanics from very popular games and add gacha on top of it and just expects it to work ,elemental combos started out great but later on it just became awful ,same with RPG mechanics do you know why? because these mechanics have not been worked upon lack depth and are just added for the sake of more content.

-It just baffles me that reviewers and many people praise the story, im not expecting planescape torment or Disco Elysium but has the bar really been this low? the story is the most generic anime garbage i have seen in a while and unless you enjoy that stuff im not judging ofc ,the praise for this games story is as empty as this game.

-Awful dungeon and boss design this is part of my complaint on how the game shoehornes uninspired gameplay mechanics and expects it to work ,the dungeons suffer from the same thing.

-Enemies lack variety and are poorly designed

-side content/quest are mediocre at best ,poorly designed and will get repetitive later on

**** Endgame and resin system if you read most reviews here you will get what im saying so i dont think i will need to echo what everyone has already said countless of times.

Overall i only recommend this game if you want something for free and have literally NO game in the backlog you might even enjoy the first part of the game but ultimately it will fall apart later on ,i hope next time we see something that is original and has depth unlike this mess of a game

Started playing it March 2021 Love the characters, music, story, gameplay and enemies everything was fine until the awful wishing system. When the Tu Hao Event Banner release wanted Tu Hao badly I rolled until the event ended couple of day before the event was gonna end I put in extra hours playing the game three times a day to grind Primogems to roll for Tu Hao even went as far as to Upgrade Statues of the Seven in Mondstadt to their max level since u get Primogems for that the goal here was to collect 10 Intertwined Fates these little orbs u use to get your characters with the awful wish system. So I collect 11 Intertwined Fates than rolled on Tu Hao banner had one day left may I remind u and ended up getting duplicates also keep in mind I rolled her banner when this event was released still haven't gotten her. This wasn't the first time where I grind for Primogems to get the Fates had previous bad past experience to the point I've gotten duplicates yet again, not gonna lie did had some good rolls here and there managed to get Jean, Quqi, Diona & Xiangling the characters I wanted, but getting the rest will be a pain and honestly I already given up since the wish system is so bad. Wouldn't mind grinding for some characters like instead of rolling for Barbara and Xiangling you can grind the game to get them, However for others you have to relie on the bad wishing system I know it's a f2p game but if your spending money on this game they should increase the luck or something because at the end of the day your paying out of you wallet which leaves me to my other problem. Don't put money onto this game it ain't worth it at all I was testing the waters spend $30 to get Genesis Crystals this was in June 2021 rolled 10 times gotten duplicates yet again felt like my money was wasted never gonna put money on this game ever again unless I know what I'm paying for. The only thing that's worth paying for in this f2p game is this $4.99 Blessing of the Welkin Moon you get 300 Genesis Crystals that can be converted to Primogems to do a wishing roll & you get 90 Primogems everyday you log in until 30 days this the only thing that's worth it in my opinion if your planning on putting money down on this game. Also you will bump into a issue where the game level up you World level where enemies levels will go up to but your characters will be under leveled to take them on than you gonna reach a point where your low on leveling up materials so advancing in the game will be very difficult if you don't get use to the battle system and knowing which element type is weak against to give u a better chance to beat this higher level enemies you gonna have to learn this if you get to this point in the game and not gonna lie it was a really bad experience for me had to put the game down. Also forgot to mention the company Mihoyo doesn't care about their consumers heard from my little sister Mihoyo said to celebrate the Anniversary of Genshin people will be awarded a 5 star character such as Mona, however people ended up getting Primogems in their inbox instead which made the fan base mad, also Mihoyo hasn't added a Flexible way for people who wasn't able to unlink their PS4 version of Genshin Impact and link it to PC to PS4 it's a pain to unlink a already made Genshin PS4 account to your already made PC account to it which has lots of stuff you unlocked on it you have to email them and their customer service is not that great either takes days to wait for a reply man might even take weeks. The company doesn't care about it's fan base and they don't deserve any of my money at all should of expect this would happen since I heard about how they handled the anniversary rewards. Expand

The game is beautiful, good soundtrack, good aesthetics, nice combat, nice world and exploration.

But it goes downhill once you realize how greedy and stingy the company is. 1. Resin system basically limits your play time so you can only maximize 4 characters in a span of 1 year. Whilst you need 8 at least to complete Spiral Abyss. Unless you pay for $10 per day for extra play-time.

    2. Wish system is super predatory if you're a monthly spender or f2p you can only have a VERY limited choice, you basically can only play what the game decided to give you.
Or wait half a year to secure a character and you can't even choose because by the time you have the currency to get the character banner is not even there.

To me, miHoYo only want WHALES as their player. So be it then.

The resin system dictates every aspect of character progression to around between 3 to 15 minutes gameplay per 16 hour period. In a game with a combat system that promotes party composition diversity and multiple set ups you cannot level more than 3 characters due to lack of resources.

Even then the resin system is not for time gating either. Given you can pay $15 A DAY. To triple your daily allocation of resin. And the fact that later character upgrade materials are locked behind bosses that have weekly lockouts who have a CHANCE to drop those materials.

Then to top it off with global communities complaining about this, content creators, whales and f2p alike the devs simply raise the cap of resin (not offer more) so instead of 16 hours to regenerate 120 it’s now 21 hours to regen 160. The company is so out of touch with a) the community b) the console and PC market c) the western playerbase it’s actually a joke.

The base game itself is really great; the combat is fun, the controls is decent and there's some party and gearing strategy involved.

The problem comes in when the monetization comes into play. The monetization of this game is based on the energy + gacha system, that you often see on mobile games. You won't notice this in the early stages of the game (which is intended to lure you in), but the higher level you get to, the more exponential the issue becomes.

The game will time lock you from progressing and put the things you need JUST out of your reach, tempting you to 'just spend to refresh your energy and you might get what you want' all the time. The energy system in Genshin Impact is one of the worst one I've seen from all the mobile gacha games I've played. You will run out of resources and in order to keep up with the 'difficulty curve' of the game, you are forced to only focus on a select few units and weapons. You cannot raise and use all the different characters and weapons at once.

The Gacha itself is also fairly atrocious. While not 'the worst', it's down there with the rest. The rate to get a 5* is 0.6% and the rate to get a 4* is 10%. There's only a single safety net, where you 'guaranteed to get a single 5* within 90 rolls'. (This is 10 for 4*). Every other single rolls you make that aren't 4* and 5* are absolutely worthless. In the current state of the game, spending money on gacha might not be 'needed', but it definitely gives you an advantage and you'll definitely have a better time if you do spend money on the gacha.

If it weren't for the (passive-)aggressive monetization system, the game would have been amazing. The voice acting comes in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese and they are really great. The graphics is pretty good. The combat is one of the better ones I've seen. Trying out different weapons and characters for party is fun. Some of the puzzles are interesting and some of the challenges are rewarding to complete. Finally the world is fun to explore for the first time.

However all of the game's strength and positive points will come to a screeching halt once you hit that 'energy/gacha wall' and you're forced to just wait it out or spend money to play more.
So this game is really nice for very casuals that plays at a very slow pace or whales that can spend money to keep on playing.

The soundtrack, the artstyle, the gameplay elements are of a Triple A quality, an immersive initial experience within a great awe-inspiring open world that ends up falling on its face as soon as the ugly face of monetization shows itself and parasitize every single system the game has to offer.

Most reviews have talked about the issues in this title, the resin system, the very low rates on the gacha rolls, the total absence of an end-game, the thin and gated gameplay loop, the paid battle pass, that requires more cash to be spent to finish it, all taint a game worth an 8 or a 9 into a below average end-result as demonstrated by the anger and frustration that leads people to rate-bomb the game.

The game is a living and breathing identity crisis as it tries to take from every genre, and while it succeeds in some aspects, it always damages the good ideas with infuriating monetization schemes.
It does not serve its coop mode, more of a clunky afterthought than a real feature.

When the exploring is done, the world is a colossal empty piece of land with absolutely nothing to do in after the 10 minute daily quest is done.

This game had the potential to be what World of Warcraft was to the MMO genre, taking an obscure niche genre and broadening its scope to become a Gaming Titan. Instead Mihoyo elected to forcefeed mobile monetization and predatory practices to a shocking degree, even for gachas and probably cuddled the market into accepting gambling addiction exploitation as a new norm for PC and console now that the mobile market is saturated with it.

In the end, this game is probably worth a 4 or a 5, but it is reasonable to see those business practices as an unethical introduction for gamers to gambling addiction and incredibly overpriced systems. Mihoyo may have singlehandedly changed the face of gaming if the industry follows this trend.

This title is like a dark prophet, announcing a wasteful era in gaming, where talented and creative artists, developpers and musicians are cannibalized by a greedy industry, unwilling to consider the craft of video-game making as the art is deserves to be.

Imagine a team of talented artists making a gorgeous game, but the game is unfortunately directed by the most out of touch director/team there is. The part where they copied from Breath of the Wild is awesome as expected, but every other part where there's business involved is awful.

The game expects you to pay, I mean it is balanced around players paying for its paid perks. If you don't, you'll just never have enough. They even had weekly quests that required you to pay to play more than their daily limit if you wanted to complete it, yes, there's a LIMIT to how many activities you can do daily. It's like they don't want players to play their game.

The gacha system itself isn't bad, but they chose to put atrocious rates. So expect to pay up to $200+ to have a 75% chance at getting a character you want. And then you probably won't have resources to use them, because they come at level 1 and your enemies will much stronger, and the only feasible way to level is to do your very LIMITED daily activities. So you have to choose to either spend your activities to level your new character, or continue leveling your high level ones who are probably doing all the heavy-lifting already to clear the same activities.

The pay to win in this game is, unfortunately, too much. You can see in many games where paying gives players a small boost/advantage to catch up with others and in my humble opinion that's fine, gives players who doesn't have too much time to play a way to keep up, but in Genshin there are items/systems that are only designed for PAYING players. There's a bunch of items that the only way to obtain is by paying, as well as skills/level-ups that are also only available if you pay (and pay a LOT by the way).

Their balance is also out of whack, in nearly everything they give as low resources as possible, you'll never have enough of anything to level your characters and their multiple systems that require leveling up, and there's a bunch of ways to purchase (real money) these resources you desperately need just to feel you're not being left behind. Enemies will keep getting stronger, and so must you, but you'll struggle to keep up unless you pay, that's how it's balanced.

The game is still in its infant stages, but a lot of these are complaints from players ever since their beta began and their direction did nothing to address these, so I hold very little hope they'll improve any time soon. Probably when their player base/profits sink so much then maybe they'll take a second look at these complaints again.

In short, it's a beautiful game with great gameplay (copied from a critically acclaimed game afterall) filled with poorly business decisions trying to squeeze money from players in every possible way.
It is free to play, but expect the usual scummy cheap mobile game money grabbing tactics limiting you to play in every way unless you pay. Just stay away from this for a couple years when they improve their game and check if it became a whale-only territory with 20 players online or an actually decent game.

On the other side, you have the business decision team who're actively trying to prevent players from playing and enjoying the game with terrible gacha rates, inflated prices, resource shortage, over monetization and even time gates progression to prevent players from playing too much.

Players are torn between praising the game's visuals, score and writing and loathing pretty much everything else. So far, the bad business guys are winning, hence my score of 3. The art team can't produce content fast enough while the bad business team is slowly chipping away our motivation to play every day.

If you can play this ignoring all the business/limitations, just for the story, playing very casually over months, then you'll enjoy the game a lot.
If you want to play until you have your fill, assuming that fill is more than 15min/day, then you'll curse the game's bad decisions for not letting you enjoy it.

I don't think it's worth playing it in it's current state, wait until there's more content and that these issues are (hopefully) fixed.

This game swept the world with its "free-to-play" facade. You don't need to spend money to enjoy it, sure, but at the same time, you'll get locked out of playing at your own pace thanks to resin, and good luck getting your characters to a viable strength to beat the abyss thanks to its artificial difficulty. But... that really didn't affect me when I realized how insanely monotonous the gameplay is. My favorite streamer started to main this game, and it's the same thing each stream. sadge. All he does is grind and grind and fukcing grind. And he even moans about having to do it... which would be playing the game. Sounds like fun /s. He has preached that you can enjoy 100% of this game as F2P, which is utterly false and rather ironic considering that he has spent almost $10k. Yeah, really sounds like you don't need to spend money to enjoy the game to its fullest /s. But again, it's ridiculously repetitive, so it kinda just stops being fun after a day or two, which makes any money spent a complete waste in my eyes. And the fact that it has the most basic of quests like "go kill these hilichurls for me", "go get me five apples" is honestly kind of insulting to gamers. It's 2020 and people are seriously content with these generic quests? Fukc that.

However, I will praise its open world for its scenery, the game's overall aesthetic, and its music. I especially like the mountainous area, dunno what it's called. But it's still a sad excuse of a map. Open world games are supposed to have interesting locations and be full of detail, but all Genshin has to offer is a thousand hilichurl camps to slaughter. Everyone defending this garbage game seems to think that it being "F2P" justifies almost all of its flaws, but come on, miHoYo is making bank off a game with a pathetic amount of content, that being the story and an endless grind. Surely they can afford to make it tenfold better. It also baffles me that people will ask, "is a triple-A title worth my precious $60" and then everyone and their gramma goes to spend a minimum $1k on this just to get sh!t on with its garbage drop rates. Yikes. People aren't gonna stop you from spending your money how you want, but it's completely irrational to gamble hundreds let alone thousands of dollars for a single character, and keep in mind that you'll need to pull them a total of seven times to see them at full potential. AND ALSO KEEP IN MIND that new characters will come out over time, possibly with powercreep, so then you'll be even more incentivized to do this all over again. In conclusion, if you enjoy this game, get‎‏‏‎ fukced.

one more thing tho, it has spawned some gud hentai, so that's cool.

And you need 6 more characters to unlock the constellations, which make your character stronger. The best weapons ingame are only obtainable through gatcha.
The gameplay is very simple but fun. The only annoyance is that you do the same thing everyday and the rng artifacts. Theres not much variance.

Very buggy, I do not recommend
From sounds that cut out to a boss that uses all his abilities at the same moment (when it’s not supposed to happen), it’s not worth the time or frustration

They try to make the plot interesting, but temporary events complicate. They correct their own mistakes in the balance of enemies, but only after polls.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine, your playing breath of the wild, and before you can leave the great plateau and head on to Kakariko village, you have to reach adventure rank 10 in order to access that next place. Which means you cant go onto the next part of the story without grinding excessively for a few days. This is basically what Genshin Impact is.

The story is so boring that at one point- Chapter 1 act 2 has you buying things as the main focus. Yes the plot of that whole act is that you walk around Liyue buying jewellery and making perfume, with a broke demigod by your side, and as attractive as Zhongli is- his character dialogue had to be one of the most boring and complicated things I'd ever read in a video game. Chapter 1 act 3 had me grinding a good few days before I had to access it and I don't think I've ever played an a game where I had to wait a few days just to access the next part of the story.

The game rips off a lot of things. Like I get taking inspiration from games like what Undertale did it to Earthbound but the amount of things this game steals from botw is insane, like I genuinely hope its get better down the line, I really do. And another thing they managed to rip off was fire emblem of all things! Just search up dainsleif and dmitri and I'll let that do the talking.

So if you lack patience or you appreciate a story rich game this game really isn't for you. However if your a weeb who's willing to spend a hundred dollars on your favourite, "waifu" or "husbando" then go and install this game right now,

Game was great in the beginning. Was willing to pay the small "subscription" to primogems to support developers because I enjoyed the game.

My suggestion for game developers is to rework the resin system to allow players to grind for resources. The current model is turning a lot of players off. It is very frustrating when we can't use our characters because we can't level them up

My suggestion for game developers is to rework the resin system to allow players to grind for resources. The current model is turning a lot of players off. It is very frustrating when we can't use our characters because we can't level them up because of this system.

Chests should respawn every few days so players have a reason to continue exploring the beautiful landscape developers have created. It's relaxing to just explore the game even if I visited the area before, but no chests gives players no reason to keep playing, it makes the world feel empty.

The rate of primogems a player acquires should be the same as it was in the beginning. Being able to do only one wish a day, even with a paid subscription, is just not enough incentive to keep playing. If there was a way to keep grinding for primogems that allowed for at least 10 wishes a day, that would be ideal, but the thought of grinding for a week or more for just one chance to get a new character, it kills my excitement for the game.

If the developers reworked their gameplay/resin/primogem model, they could have a much larger loyal player base. Would have played for several more months with a subscription if they changed these aspects of the game. Instead it's only playable for about a month before the game feels stale and unplayable. A shame considering they could make more money and make more people happy if they just changed these few things.

I'm not like the others and I'm not here to complain about anniversary rewards, but rather the actual game itself. I just list it down here...

PROS -Great graphics, though some form of upscaling support (DLSS and FSR) would be appreciated. -Combat system is decent and has some depth to it. -The World itself is gorgeous, especially Liyue and Inazuma. -SOME characters are fairly well

    PROS
-Great graphics, though some form of upscaling support (DLSS and FSR) would be appreciated.
-Combat system is decent and has some depth to it.
-The World itself is gorgeous, especially Liyue and Inazuma.
-SOME characters are fairly well written.
    -Interesting lore.
-Characters and enemies are well design (in terms of looks) and Azdaha is amazing.

    CONS
-Bad plot, and I don't mean it only for the Inazuma chapters. The game plot was kinda bad right from the start actually. While the characters, setting and McGuffins are different, each nation main story has the same formula. You meet an archon and it residents, help them with their nation crisis, fight boss, turns out its the **** Fatui over and over again. Its the same formula as those kids Tv shows. You can predict the plot and 75% of the time you will be right.
-RNG on top of another RNG. I usually enjoy farming in games, my favourite franchise is Monster Hunter and its loot (monster parts) had medium to heavy RNG. But Genshin RNG is **** dogsh1et. Don't even expect you get even a decent artifact for your characters. I've been grinding artifacts for Childe for MONTHS since his rerun, and never get anything useful out of it.
-Interesting lore, ruined by writing 101 mistakes. I interested in raiden and wanted to learn more about her, but then Yae just casually dropped the bomb and TELLS almost everything that could make as an interesting scenario to discover Raiden Shogun as character and make raiden's quest a shopping mall trip lmao. "SHOW, DON'T TELL".
-Beautiful graphics, horrible render distance and optimization. Its hard to appreciate the landscape when the rocks and trees suddenly changes and jiggles like crazy everytime and the game rendering the land only like 5 meters away in front of your face. The fact that genshin runs worse than an emulated BOTW with graphics mods and RTX enabled on my PC is baffling.
-Everything about Ayaka's quest. Really MiHoYo? A **** date quest, in the middle of a civil war? If it was optional I could forgive it or at least AFTER the main plot of Inazuma, then do whatever you want with her.
-Electro as an element. Electro characters are the most fun to play yet their potential is gatekept by weak electro reactions.

That's all and dear MHY White Knights, please go and touch some REAL grass. Your nothing but a bootlicker.

    Sincerely, me.

Rather than a typical online game, Genshin Impact resembles a traditional single-player jRPG with a real-time combat. For a free-to-play title it is very impressive, but turns out to be pretty derivative and quickly slumps into monotony. [13/2020, p.52]

Oh, the joy of exploring this beautiful world. Oh, the clever combat, the great voice acting, the compelling story. This is one of the best RPGs of the year. And it’s almost beyond comprehension that you can get it for free.

Overall, in spite of things that should bring Genshin Impact down, the game is so much fun to play that the negatives are ultimately minor gripes. [...] The gameplay is smooth and simplistic, and it works great on all platforms - though I’m still not sure why the PlayStation version can’t be linked to a Mihoyo account so I could play on my phone when I’m not at home (PS Vita version please??) but it’s a small gripe to an otherwise terrific game.
