Servants of the Dark moves the setting from a single demonic castle to the entirety of the demon world. Players will control two demon maids as they explore the underworld: Kirika and her younger sister Masha. They each have different attacks and abilities, requiring players to switch between the two as they explore each area, upgrade their weapons, defeat demonic bosses, and revive their master, the Demon Lord Maxim.

Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark has improved a lot of things from the first game and is a 2D Metroidvania to try out for yourself.

Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark refines its predecessor’s metroidvania formula with charming new protagonists, snappier combat, and a more rewarding exploration loop. While occasional design oversights like limited fast travel and map tools dampen the pace, its heartfelt writing, challenging bosses, and beautifully detailed pixel art make it a must-play for genre fans.

With Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark, there’s a solid solo and fun cooperative campaign that offers a good 15 plus hours of action, depending on how often you get lost. Level design has improved since the last game, humour is on-brand with Gal Guardians’ preceding series of games, and movement feels great. Here’s another Metroidvania I can recommend to the newbie and veteran alike.

The shift to a full-on Metroidvania format makes Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark a bigger and more satisfying game than the already enjoyable original. With charming characters, interesting map design, and thrilling boss battles, it’s easy to forgive this game for minor sins like excessive backtracking and weak tutorials. Servants of the Dark is a solid choice for fans of the original game or Metroidvania enthusiasts alike.

Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark is a competent metroidvania, with cool visuals and solid gameplay. The scenarios are pleasant to explore and the fights are fun to play, all seasoned by a charming theme. It's a shame that it has some annoying problems in several areas, in addition to not offering significant innovations to such a competitive market. In the end, it's a suggestion mainly for lovers of the genre and fans of the Gal Gun brand.

Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark suffers from classic sequelitis—trying to go bigger, it loses what made the original special. The art and combat still shine, but messy structure and design choices ultimately drag it down.

I really wanted to love Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark. I kept giving it more and more time to prove itself and get past the sophomoric slump I kept finding myself in. But alas, this is not the sequel I was hoping for or expecting after Gal Guardians: Demon Purge. This would be one thing from some new upstart developer, but it’s truly surprising and disappointing from the talented folks at Inti Creates. That said, if you can tolerate bad platforming, poorly managed mechanics, and frustrating balance, then you might still find something to love here. For everyone else, this isn’t the adventure for you.
