Football Manager 26 is a good step forward when it comes to engine and tactics, but it can frustrate many long-term fans. I like the dual approach to tactical choices, and I feel that the title reflects real-world trends. The match day experience is good, and the integration of women’s football adds a new dimension to the sim. Learning where everything is in the new interface, especially for the less-used options, will take time. Graphical glitches and some weirdness with on-pitch movement will probably be eliminated by patches. Football Manager 26 requires time and patience, but it will give football simulation fans hundreds of hours of fun, regardless of whether they are playing a superpower or an underdog.

Sports Interactive and SEGA stay true to their essence of portraying the world of football from a different perspective. With Football Manager 26, diversity takes center stage, and the addition of the Premier League license — together with an optimized interface and a more intuitive transfer system — make this entry a strong draw for both newcomers and longtime fans alike.

And despite these issues, this is still Football Manager, with all of its delicious tactical minutiae to get lost in. Thanks to the modernised tactics and match engine, making the perfect tactical tweaks to kickstart a stoppage time comeback and silence those oh-so-confident home fans has never felt better. Football Manager 26 provides tangible feedback to your split-second decisions and lets you conceive fictional rivalries that can last for seasons. And when you beat Sunderland with three goals in the final five minutes, the thrill remains unsurpassed.

Football Manager 26 delivers the biggest overhaul the series has seen, pushing toward a more modern presentation with improved visuals and UI that clearly aim to welcome new players. But those sweeping changes come with a cost: missing features and an overwhelming number of bugs make it a frustrating experience for longtime fans.

Football Manager 26 marks a new beginning for Sports Interactive’s saga, but not without growing pains. The move to Unity and a revamped, albeit convoluted, interface bring ambitious depth and realism in football storytelling, yet also contradictions and rough edges that make this a fascinating but imperfect transition year.

For now, the new era of Football Manager is off to a rocky start. While the ever-moreish gameplay loop will no doubt eke another 1,000 hours out of me while I laze in front of the telly, I cannot truthfully say that this is the game I had hoped to wait so long for.

Football Manager 26 is a disaster few could have imagined. An overwhelming number of bugs combined with a downright atrocious user interface turns this supposed new beginning into a barely playable mess. Amid the chaos, there are brilliant and irreplaceable innovations that make returning to previous installments unthinkable – which only makes the whole thing all the more tragic.
