Ok look, cards aside, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is a wild, ambitious retelling of that original story that dances carefully between nostalgia and complete narrative changes. I was surprised to see a certain character interact with another character so early in the tale, and the changes just kept on coming from there; but in a good way. Each of the character felt like they had more depth this time around, and the side missions don’t just feel like extra padding like in Remake. The story has it all, humor? Yep. Trauma. Oh, it’s here for sure in some big doses. Even though I already know the story beats from Final Fantasy 7 but Rebirth still managed to surprise me time and time again in the best way. Come for the Queen’s Blood, stay for the excellent Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth tale.

New features such as support for up to 120 FPS, customized lighting and improved light rendering make Rebirth shine even more beautifully than before. Provided you have a powerful PC with an even stronger graphics card that can withstand the demands. In our test with an AMD Ryzen 9 processor with 32 GB RAM and a GeForce RTX 3090, we had a few small stutters with the "Medium" graphics preset at a resolution of 1080p, especially in the video sequences, even though both the CPU and GPU were above the data recommended by Square Enix.

The game looks better than ever while still delivering on the gameplay that made it a hit in the first place.

There’s not much I can critique about FFVII Rebirth. It reminded me of everything I love and appreciate about the original game while granting a new perspective. It’s a wonderful action RPG with some addicting minigames to boot. I like the slight element of choice interspersed throughout the narrative as well. I can see where some of the more original aspects of FFVII Rebirth’s story could be divisive to fans of the original, but for my part, I felt they helped set the stage for what could be a wholly new experience (a rebirth, if you will). Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a game I’m glad I played as a fan of the original and a newcomer to this remake trilogy, as it’s an excellent Final Fantasy title with its own merit. I’m now curious and eager to see how this game’s ending might change what’s coming next.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a well-optimized PC port that shows Square Enix learned a lot from its predecessor, both technologically, and otherwise. Deeper combat gameplay, a massive world with a boatload of side content, with every major location from the previous game rebuilt and celebrated in new and unexpected ways. While some of the game's open world content can devolve into a bit of a Ubisoft-style collect-a-thon, some of the quests add interesting new lore and come with potent rewards and bespoke dungeons along the way. FF7 Rebirth shines most in its more linear story-heavy sections in my view, which absolutely over-deliver on the nostalgic expectations of fans of the original, all while creating something fresh. I'm still sceptical of Final Fantasy 7's "newer" plot elements, but it doesn't stop the game from being an absolute trip, for fans both old and new.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth works really well on PC but heavily relies on DLSS to run smoothly. With no FSR support (yet at least), only DLSS makes the game look nice. The TAA and the TAAU make the game look blurry, especially on the Steam Deck where the Verified badge is underserved. However, if you are lucky to have a DLSS capable PC, the enjoyment this game provides cannot be overstated.

The PC version of FF VII Rebirth is certainly a solid one, especially for those with lower-spec systems or handhelds, but it is a little on the disappointing side for those looking for something special on their higher-end rigs.

If the compromises of the original PS5 put you off or if you were waiting for it to come out on PC to enjoy it in the best possible conditions, the latest game in Square Enix's flagship franchise is overall clearly worth the investment.
