Disappointed ! 2 for the graphics but otherwise the game is really boring, stupid missions go from A to B (B is always on the other side of the map), you just kill again and again the same guys, you destroy again and again the same enemy cars on the way. Frankly speaking nothing to compare with Far Cry. No doubt that reviewer in magazines have been bribed.

This game should have been called FarDrive 2. I've literally spent more time in my vehicle than in the Grand Theft Auto series. There isn't much variety in the cars though, so it gets pretty repetitive fast.

That said, the missions are really enjoyable and there is no shortage of random fun stuff to do.

On to the review: The story seems a bit lacking in depth and history. The ability to choose your protagonist was a good one in theory, but it seems to have toned down any character development that could have occured. As to gameplay, the more I play this game the more I appreciate being able to choose my own style of play. This is not a game for Halo-style single-objective play. I really enjoy that I don't have to execute my objectives in the way set to me by the game developer. How may times have you played a shooter where you have to run-over-there-and-blow-up-that-AAgun? Nothing kills immersion faster for me than an objective that doesn't make sense. "Why do I have to run up to that tank? I don't want to." In Far Cry 2, no matter what your playing style, there is an alternative. I've been impressed (mostly, but there are some flaws) by the AI in Far Cry 2. Here are some things that impressed me: 1. Cover matters. If they haven't seen you, they don't know you're there. There are no times where enemies just start chasing you. You have to catch their attention before they notice you. On the other hand, they can be a little short-sighted until you start shooting. 2. VISUAL cover matters. Hiding in a bush, tall grass, or behind a thin cover of foliage keeps you hidden, at least to some extent. 3. The AI uses tactics. If you stand on a ridge (or somewhere else you can be seen from), fire off a few rounds, then get under cover and change locations, the enemy will go to the last place you were seen and search from there. This opens all kinds of tactics to be used. I like laying out IEDs then luring the enemy into an ambush. All in all, it's a solid title. I'm excited to see it with a bit more polish. Expand

The best part about this game is that it feels like it's very upfront and honest about what it is. It doesn't pretend to be an RPG. It doesn't pretend to be something as pretentious as Crysis. No, this is Far Cry 2, and it actually lives up to the name. Plot doesn't seem to figure much into the game so far, but that's okay...because the game truly IS open-ended. Sure, you have to go take on missions and there are certain objectives that you have to do, but the world is VERY open. The way I see it is, this is like a MUCH better, fully polished version of what a game like STALKER should be...minus the inventory system. It literally sticks you into the world and there you are. You can find diamonds and upgrade weapons and safe-houses. And the graphics in this game are AMAZING. I'm running it on an 8800GT and it's letting me run it at 1280x960 with all the DX10 features and most details turned all the way up. It looks really great. The lighting and foliage and atmosphere are wonderful. The editor is great too. They've made it even more intuitive than the one for Far Cry is, and it allows you to literally plop yourself right down into your map AS you're making it. Excellent game. And the filesizes are amazing. I was surprised when the game was less than 4GB. Not sure how they did it, but it's good to see a game that isn't an 8GB monster. Expand

I was following the development of this game with great interest. Ever since Operation Flashpoint, back in 2001, I have been seeking a diverse, open landscape in which to develop tactics and strategies, to think ahead, use one's initiative, exploit the weather, find and use cover; in other words, to have an FPS that is steeped in atmosphere, in a 'sense of place', yet which I was following the development of this game with great interest. Video trailers of the game in development showed such promise. In part, this game delivers. The first time my heart stopped, listening to the rustling of the leaves as I was about to squeeze the trigger of the sniper rifle, the sensation was electric. I've stopped at a bus stop in order to simply watch the sunrise, which gave the grass and the hills a golden sheen. Stunning. But I've only been playing for a few days, and there may well be a problem around repetition, since having to criss-cross the beautifully-rendered landscape will decrease the charm of the whole thing. At the moment I find it utterly immersive and compelling, and much more satisfying than Crysis, GTA or Mercenaries (there are echoes of each in this game, strangely enough). But the 'feel' of the weapons, the way the crusty old ones not just look but also sound different, and jam up on you, gives a real viscerality to the gunfights - very exciting. Expand

The realism in the environment is great but two parts of the realism are terrible: no matter who you pull jobs for everyone wants you dead, and it takes way too many shots to kill people. Look read the other user comments for Why did I buy this game, it wasn't worth the money. You would think they would have improved on Far Cry 1, but no they took a serious jump backwards. Boring, bad graphics, the game has no soul. Whats good about the game? the name is good Whats bad? the fact that they have destroyed an amazing first game reputuation and made such rubbish. Look read the other user comments for everyting that is wrong with the game, because they are all true. I'm too angry to run through all the wrongs and I can't believe I bought the game. The only reason I gave it a 2 rating was because of the 1st game!!! Expand

I dont understand why people give this game a bad rating. The graphics are excellent, sound is very good, and story is okay. But the enemies are a little mind less but that really doesn't make a difference unless you play on hard (I play on medium) This game is enjoyable.

Come one people. This game is a good time. The weapons are well modeled and fun to use. The sound is excellent and the graphics are very good. The story is entertaining and the drive time adds to the ambience. Running a road block and putting a set of tire tracks across a few henchmen

A lot of fun to be had driving around the brilliant terrain, scouting out for guard posts and planning the best method of attack. The controls feel fine. I don't understand why people are complaining about the game being repetitive, it's an FPS, of course the whole game is going to be point click shoot. Warning, this game is a Console port... This is probably a great game on a console, but on a PC is a very disappointing. Controls are frustrating for a PC game. For example; different buttons for getting in then getting out of a vehicle. No lean, no prone, no weapon options (can't change to single fire mode for EX). Game play is the same way, great graphics but consistency and AI are Warning, this game is a Console port... This is probably a great game on a console, but on a PC is a very disappointing. Combat is thrilling – each weapon packing a solid, vicious blast; movement suggesting heft and momentum. [Dec 2008, p.80]
  2. By adopting a laissez faire attitude to player discretion, Ubisoft has crafted a brilliant follow-up.

More importantly, it has nowhere near as many bugs as something like "S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl," a title that bears many similarities. Add to the roughly 25 hour single-player campaign a remarkably easy-to-use map creation tool and a full multiplayer suite, and you've got one of the most complete overall gaming packages of the year, as well as one of the most ambitious.
