    A brilliant and absorbing sandbox shooter. Something I've been waiting for for years. May be an acquired taste for players used to linear progression and structure, but I for one loved being set a task, immersing myself in the setting and then applying myself to pulling off the job. AI is fantastic, as are the graphics and gameplay. The action is wonderful, dynamic and the whole A brilliant and absorbing sandbox shooter. Something I've been waiting for for years.     One of the most beautiful and immersive games ever created. I generally have a hard time getting into open world games like this...but after slugging through the first few hours and getting a feel of how everything works...I'm totally addicted.     This game is just cool. The reason it is such a good game is a combination of many small but important game elements. Instead of crushing you under tons different role-playing elements Far Cry 2 breaks it all down into three different sections: Daimonds, Drugs and Guns. The game is gritty without being frustraiting (except on Infamous difficulty). Your guns wear down and you heal yourself This game is just cool. The reason it is such a good game is a combination of many small but important game elements. Instead of crushing you under tons different role-playing elements Far Cry 2 breaks it all down into three different sections: Daimonds, Drugs and Guns. The game is gritty without being frustraiting (except on Infamous difficulty). Your guns wear down and you heal yourself by performing first aid depending on your injuries. These elements alow you to feel in tune with your charicter, and your buddys almost take death out of the equation. Instead of constantly pressing the quickload key you are instead asisted by your buddy in question, who drags you out of harms way and covers you as you patch yourself up. This is a refreshing change from haveing to replay a sequence because of some bad luck. On the other hand you do run into a AI glitch every once and awhile but thats a total nitpick. And some animations are a bit stiff, however this anomaly is few and far between and no where as bad as other games. In fact I couldnt help but but admire Far Cry 2's fluidity, sequences are smooth and the graphics in some places are breathtakeing. The story is interesting and changes depending on what charicter you choose. It is NOT Cliched, yes it is set in Africa and involves daimonds but that doesnt automatically make it cliched. I wont talk about the finer parts of the story but let me tell you some scenes are innovative and unique for a FPS. Over all this game may look like a generic jungle shooter on the surface but if you play it you will not regret it. And as a side note I played Far Cry 2 on my PC and had no problems with the controls. The game crashed once throughout 44 hours of gamplay. Truth be told it is an excellent PC game. NOT a Console Port. Granted there is no lean and no prone but i never found the absence of these to be a problem. Truly a one of a kind game.… Expand

    I own the pc version and i think its bloody brilliant!! I cant believe the amount of people who have given this a low score. I also own crysis but you know what, i think i prefer FC2 over crysis. The AI is smarter in FC2, they dont get confused when you snipe them. The only down side so far is that the enemy take a few too many shots to take down (crysis was the same pre-patch) but 1 head I own the pc version and i think its bloody brilliant!! I can only assume this problem is made worse on ps3 as aiming with the control pad is difficult. But everything else is just really really good. Anyone who doesnt like this game just cant be playing it right, yes you have the same checkpoints that you have to keep attacking but there's many ways to approach just like crysis but with the added ability of using fire. For instance as you approach a check point take a little time to see where people are, if they're all inside the buildings then why not lob a couple of molotov cocktails into the surrounding fields and watch as the enemy is forced out into the open by the incoming fire (make sure the wind is blowing in the right direction of course) then you can take them out with whatever gun you happen to prefer, or with a bit of planning you can place some explosive in a strategic place then use fire to force people into that area then BOOM, detonate via remote. People have said the cars always break down?? I've been playing for a week and the only time i've had a break down is when my motor has been shot to pieces by the enemy. Even then you can just get out and fix the car yourself. There is a problem with online play as the connection keeps dropping but i'm sure this will be sorted out. Otherwise i love playing online, all the game mechanics still apply online. You can set fire to just about anything, drive vehicles and mend them. You can heal your fellow team mates when they've fallen which in itself can be dangerous and exciting as you never know whether its a trap, the enemy sniper could still have his sights aimed on the fallen man waiting to take down anyone who trys to help. For me this game takes all the good elements from games like crysis, far cry, and even GTA and blends them to make a superb gaming experience. Cant understand how anyone can hate this game… Expand

The first type demands a deep story, relishes in highly dramatic scripted battles and so is necessarily kept 'on rails' by the game, since this caliber of storytelling is still impossible to do dynamically. Well, Far Cry 2 isn't your game, get back to CoD! The second type relishes in freeform, dynamic gameplay, i.e. sandbox games. We enjoy a bit of storyline too, but not so much that it distracts from our main reason for playing shooters: inflicting epic amounts of violence on unsuspecting, virtual people, choosing our grim methods from a range of options. For us, Far Cry 2 is an absolute blast. First the negatives, since it's far from perfect. Weapon damage isn't at all realistic, with both you and the virtual fodder being able to soak multiple shots. Respawn times for the endless patrols is far too high, and you're rarely able to drive around for more than one or two minutes before being intercepted by another jeep full. The good stuf: both the engine and the virtual piece of Africa you get to roam in look absolutely stunning and realistic. Weapon handling is flawless. Vehicle handling is flawless, easily beating e.g. GTA. Love sniping? This is your game. Love brutely murdering goons with the best in-game flamethrower ever? Got it. Just watching how fires spread will convince anyone with any feel for quality that this is something special. And it still has drama, dynamically employing scripts to create involvement, where LESSER games like the Call of Duty series have to rely on stupid virtual people casually waiting until the player's arrival before displaying their wafer thin emo. It's a shame Ubisoft refused to release an SDK for this, resulting in a distinct lack of mods which could (and would) solve the few annoying faults of this masterpiece. At its current price, anyone who relishes freedom, fun and great graphics should get this.… Expand

    Come one people. This game is a good time. The weapons are well modeled and fun to use. The sound is excellent and the graphics are very good. The story is entertaining and the drive time adds to the ambience. Running a road block and putting a set of tire tracks across a few henchmen

    I like the openness of this game. It is set up so that driving and being with your vehicle is a major part. But also I was impressed that the terrain maps are made so that you can traverse the country side off road if you want. It is a challenge to navigate your jeep off road while the benefits in so doing in evading the roving soldiers is advantageous sometimes. I was surprised how I like the openness of this game. Boats and walking or running are other ways to reach points on the map. And because of this there is plenty of freedom in approaching your goals in missions. The goal of completing the missions in the game are fun and addictive. The scenery and music lend to this but are not distracting. In fact I have noticed that nothing as far as trees or rocks seem to be repetitious and each detail of the scenery is rendered naturally and realistically. Out of the graphics area in the game one weapon, the rifle with a scope is a little big and takes up a lot of my field of view in the game- but that is nit picking some. Frequent saves are an annoyance but that is balanced by absolutely no load times or cut scenes. You don't know when you could die so before going through check points it is a good Idea to save. There are no load times in the game in going from one part of a region to another (except for bus rides) which is impressive to me considering the speed at which the amazing graphics are blazing by at times in lengthy journeys. Combat is a little too easy at times. I would suggest an experienced FPS player start at the game at Hardcore. Also the game plays fine and looks wonderful on my system a middle range computer with a 3ghz single core processor and good graphics card. If you plan to buy a game for yourself and enjoy long single player missions this game is for you. The multiplayer component looks promising but I may save it for later. After about 20 hours of game play I have not finished it and killed the Jackal. But I suspect it will be a fulfilling and climatic ending.… Expand

    Well after going through the posts one thing is clear...if you expected this to be exactly the same as Far Cry 1 - (expectations will always lead to disappointment in life in any endeavor - you kids will eventually learn this), then you will likely be disappointed. AI is decent, Fights are fun and intense, flame thrower's a joy to use (get up-wind of a complex, burn baby burn and peg them off when they flee, or watchem squirm - priceless). For those who are bitchin that this "too" real (old guns jam, you get malaria, etc) - go play doom 1 or tetris - that's likely more up your alley, lol - who ever bitched a game was too realistic? go do puzzles or something.… Expand

    First off, this game has little in common with far Cry other than the name and it has guns. For me personally this is a huge bonus...i say hooray because i hated Far Cry after the first few levels. Stupid AI that you had to pump 10,000 rounds of ammo into before they died...rubbish! This game has a slower pace and a brilliant open environment. I'm happy to drive about taking in the First off, this game has little in common with far Cry other than the name and it has guns. Yes some of it is repetitive and it's highly annoying the two opposing factions don't actually fight each other. And it would be nice if everybody in the game wasn't out to kill you. Graphics are lush, sounds are nice. Vehicle models are good. Weapons feel good. I can see why people are upset with this game and why it's scoring so low with quite a few users. It's simply not fast paced or moving seemlessly from mission to mission like COD4. The story and characters in COD4 were excellent, this doesn't compare. The lame multiplayer doesn't help. But i'm happy. It's nice to have something slower and open ended.… Expand

Firstly yeah there is a gameplay problem with enemies respawning far too quickly at camps -nothing that can't be fixed with a patch- i.e. IF you use the road and play it like rambo.     Now I have tried the PC version as well at my friend's place and I like it as much as my 360 version. I was actually quite surprised that it ran so smooth with high quality settings. The game has its little flaws like it had them on xbox 360 but damn, so little flaws for so many good things, I simply wish there were more games like this one. Time to create a map for a multiplayer game.

    Everyone has their opinions, but has anyone that has rated this game a 5 or below actually played the whole game?? When I started I just thought it was okay, but after about 2 hrs it rlly took off, only game that has gone beyond the norms in the while.

    This game captures the feel of what I'd imagine it would be like to be an amoral merc / black ops agent in some war torn African country. What I don't like so much is the repetitiveness of certain aspects of the game and the voice acting could be better. However, the main "quests" are well designed and a hell of a lot of fun to play through.     Well !! i dont know what do the gamers mean by respawning issue..coz i dint face one.There are only a no of enemies at every checkpost and once you have dealt with them thats it.....moreover you dont have to empty the whole of your magzine to take down a single guy...just aim for the head.any one who has played Counter strike will not have any difficulty in the gameplay as such.     I dont understand why people give this game a bad rating. The graphics are excellent, sound is very good, and story is okay. But the enemies are a little mind less but that really doesn't make a difference unless you play on hard (I play on medium) This game is enjoyable.

For warring factions, they're pretty damned friendly to eachother -1 for lack of non-combatants. Where is everybody else? Sure, there's no cities or towns except for the central -1 for enemy respawn rate -1 for enemies spotting/shooting you even when you're in heavy cover, and never ever breaking off pursuit when in their cars -1 for everyone shooting you exclusively. For warring factions, they're pretty damned friendly to eachother -1 for lack of non-combatants. Where is everybody else? Sure, there's no cities or towns except for the central mission hubs, but I'd expect women and kids there at least. -1 for enemies taking too many bullets. +1 for graphics. It looks great, fire looks awesome, the changes in weather and day/nights are breathtaking at times. +1 for no aliens. I stopped playing Far Cry after half a level of those mutants. That completely broke the game for me. +1 for malaria, jamming guns, "field surgery", cars being fixable instead of either brand new or exploding. Yes, the animations can be tedious but I actually enjoyed having to be rescued by a buddy after a gun jammed while I ran in Rambo-style and I got swamped. It's not a "run in guns blazing" game for me, so these little interruptions add a bit of depth for me. +1 for the map system. I rock at getting lost in any single game, but the paper map guides me without breaking immersion. What may make the difference between me and a lot of people that give low ratings is that I am in no way in a hurry to finish the game. I enjoy looking around, circling a camp a few times to plan my assault. I am fine with spending time to drive to my missions, it adds realism and gives me a chance to look at the scenery. I just love the different subzones, ranging from desert to almost jungle-like. If they patch the respawn rates and amount of bullets the enemy can take, I'll be playing a near-perfect game.… Expand

    I'll say it right off the bat, this game is essentially a first-persion version of GTA set in Africa. The graphics are great, and my "meager" 8800 GTS was able to run it on almost full settings. Sweet. I could complain about the myriad of minor issues such as occasionally dim-witted AI or robotic sounding NPCs, but the game is still plenty fun.     This game is great. I dont know whats all the hoopla about the DRM problems but if you buy the game on steam, you have no DRM problems. Sure the missions are repetitive and there is a ton of driving, but the missions are exhilarating and the driving is interrupted with guard posts that keep the game exciting.

    Unequivocally the best game ever. They have captured the mood and lighting of Africa, and the realism and details and game play are excellent for thinking people. Will not appeal to the bunny hopping crowd. Nees a very good graphics card to really enjoy the experience of being in Africa.

If you're only wearing a pair of shorts and flip flops and you get hit in the chest with an AR-15, you're dead. In this game it takes like five hits at least. On the other side, the game is more immersive than anything I've played and well worth it.… Expand

As to gameplay, the more I play this game the more I appreciate being able to choose my own style of play. This is not a game for Halo-style single-objective play. I really enjoy that I don't have to execute my objectives in the way set to me by the game developer. How may times have you played a shooter where you have to run-over-there-and-blow-up-that-AAgun? Nothing kills immersion faster for me than an objective that doesn't make sense. "Why do I have to run up to that tank? I don't want to." In Far Cry 2, no matter what your playing style, there is an alternative. I've been impressed (mostly, but there are some flaws) by the AI in Far Cry 2. Here are some things that impressed me: 1. Cover matters. If they haven't seen you, they don't know you're there. There are no times where enemies just start chasing you. You have to catch their attention before they notice you. On the other hand, they can be a little short-sighted until you start shooting. 2. VISUAL cover matters. Hiding in a bush, tall grass, or behind a thin cover of foliage keeps you hidden, at least to some extent. 3. The AI uses tactics. If you stand on a ridge (or somewhere else you can be seen from), fire off a few rounds, then get under cover and change locations, the enemy will go to the last place you were seen and search from there. This opens all kinds of tactics to be used. I like laying out IEDs then luring the enemy into an ambush. All in all, it's a solid title. I'm excited to see it with a bit more polish.… Expand

I recommend playing it on one of the harder difficulties, since the game gets better the more you have to think tactically about what you can and can't do. The game deliberately hamstrings your ability to travel and resupply to heighten the tension you feel when you are in the wilderness and low on ammo. It works, but you have to buy in.     Amazing game. The story immerses you from the beginning and keeps you glued to the screen to the very last plot twist. The graphics are absolotely amazing, a definite landmark for gaming. The map editor is worth the 60$ alone. Altogether, this is the best FPS I have played in my life. A must buy whether you're into the genre or not.

    Far Cry 2, although not on the same story path as the original PC game (not including the shady port on Xbox 360), does a great job of moving the FPS genre forward. It has an ambitious single player campaign, and a great multiplayer Map editor, which sure, will expand the life of this game for some time to come.

Needed to include more in the environment as it is hard to believ that all but a few animals would have fled the country

Also if you liked movies like Lord of War or Blood Diamonds, you can get a bit of the same vibe here. However, if you like more straightforward and simple action shooters, this isn't one of them. Vast landscapes, No clipping, there is an animation for every action... if you open a crate you see the hand open it.. it doesn't flick open... The fighting I admit isn't as good as say COD 4, because you can shoot a person with a pistol 9 times and he wont die... Although the fighting is really fun. And yes: I ran into those checkpoints full of respawned gunslingers time and time again. I was assaulted by some dude in a civilian car while just travelling along time and time again. I ran out of ammo or jammed my weapon or failed to administer first aid and died because of it time and time again. Until I figured out that you don't HAVE to go THROUGH that checkpoint to get from A to B - you simply go around it. You don't HAVE to travel along roads - you can travel off the beaten track or take a boat or bus - and you're much less likely to get shot at. Plus this kind of evading strategy takes you places where diamonds or Jackal tapes are hidden. You don't have to get a jammed weapon every clip - just go and stock up on purchased weapons from the shop before you head out. And suddenly those checkpoints become valuable destinations to refill your ammo, syringes and explosives, not just some tedious affair. FarCry 2 is not meant to be a linear, highly scripted, action-every-5-seconds CoD clone. If you play it like that, you are bound to be disappointed. It is meant to be explored. You are meant to find your own way around this world. And if you do, you'll be rewarded with epic firefights, some truly amazing F*%$-off! moments, and an experience that will stay with you for some time to come.… Expand

There is no correct way to complete a mission, the fire propagation is an amazing tool graphicly and for use in combat. Each weapon has a real feel to it, breaking weapons and jams add to a sence of fear that you may have to improvise weapon choise greatly effects the outcome of a mission and the way you deal with any give situation. Pick a sniper rifle and dominate from far away, but if you fire several shots from one place be prepared to be swarmed and killed. Pick a shotty and move in close, but stay moble and think "i cant say this enough" think about what you doing or you will die. Farcry 2 is a thinking game, if you dont think then u wont have fun, i smell a cult classic more then a main stream game as, its just to much for people used to tunnel shooters.     I'm currently 2/3rds of the way through Far Cry 2 and I'm absolutely loving it. Amazing visuals and effects make this game look amazing, although the LOD changes of foliage and geometry are sometimes a little jarring. Attacking the various checkpoints and, indeed, targets is always a fun bit. Although sometimes the AI seem to have magic eyes and are able to spot you amazingly I'm currently 2/3rds of the way through Far Cry 2 and I'm absolutely loving it. Amazing visuals and effects make this game look amazing, although the LOD changes of foliage and geometry are sometimes a little jarring. Attacking the various checkpoints and, indeed, targets is always a fun bit. Although sometimes the AI seem to have magic eyes and are able to spot you amazingly well (normally rocket dudes too!) it makes sense that they should be able to see at least as well as you. One particularly memorable combat for me was a sneaky-sneaky infiltration into an enemy base. I snuck around dart gunning and knifing my way through enemies that I came across, occasionally launching a grenade at an ammo stockpile to divert attention from my position. By the time I actually reached my objective I had most of the NPCs running around screaming that they wanted to go home! There isn't an enourmous variety of weapons (compared to say, Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 :-P) but rather than pack the game with a million different guns which are all more or less reskins, the developers seem to have attempted to have one or two different styles of weapon for each slot. For example, it's possible to equip sniper weapons to primary or special, or explosive launchers to any slot, which means more or less that although you are restricted to 3 weapons with one from each slot, they don't have to be assault rifle, pistol and rocket launcher as you might expect. One thing that does frustrate me is the total lack of climbing ability. It kind of levels the playing field a bit (otherwise you could just sit on top of a giant mountain and snipe everyone on the map) but it seems a bit strange to say you have an amazing open-world game and then restrict you to only 1 or 2 paths into each area. The sniper weapons are a little samey too, with each one being more or less a one-shot kill, and there are no bullet physics to speak of which makes sniping your way through encampments ridiculously easy. Bullet physics, especially wind, would fit very well into the game as well, since you can watch trees and flames blow in the wind. I'd just like to point out that perhaps the developers of Far Cry 2 saw the title reflecting the paradisic nature of the setting which has been reduced to a war zone - a 'far cry' from the paradise it appears to be.… Expand

Instead, you are dropped in the middle of a beautifully rendered Africa with the freedom to tackle a variety of missions as you choose. Most people also complain about the long travelling times, and the repeated guard post attacks. The guard posts are a small minus for me, mainly because of how they instantly respawn when you go just about 100 feet or so away from it. But the travel is actually fun for me, and if it really takes you too long then you obviously should only be playing scripted, linear games where the next predictable objective is always directly planted right in front of your face. No, Far Cry 2 is for those of us who actually want to live and breathe our character in his setting. Yeah, the story could be better, but the varitey of weapons and different ways you can tackle missions make it really fun. I do wish stealth was easier too, you cant really sneak around compounds knifing people in the back ninja style, but you can use stealth to bypass guard posts, especially at night. I only wish there were other African animals like lions and alligators.… Expand

    Probably the second best game of 2008 after Fallout 3. Completely immersive and way fun. The AI is a little bit psychic at times and you definitely don't want to run and gun your way down the road because you end up fighting jeep and outpost after jeep and outpost...but if you slow down and play a little bit stealthy this game really opens itself up to you. Overall I'd recommend it!

You can find diamonds and upgrade weapons and safe-houses. And the graphics in this game are AMAZING. I'm running it on an 8800GT and it's letting me run it at 1280x960 with all the DX10 features and most details turned all the way up. It looks really great. The lighting and foliage and atmosphere are wonderful. The editor is great too. They've made it even more intuitive than the one for Far Cry is, and it allows you to literally plop yourself right down into your map AS you're making it. Excellent game. And the filesizes are amazing. I was surprised when the game was less than 4GB. Not sure how they did it, but it's good to see a game that isn't an 8GB monster.… Expand

For my playthrough, I adopted a full stealth strategy. Silenced Pistol, sniper rifle, and a rocket launcher if I needed a lot of bang. When I first started, though, I was popping caps left and right with a shotgun and flamethrower. But the thing about this game is that you're NOT relegated to any one experience. As I said, I adopted a stealth strategy. How do I deal with checkpoints? Either sneak around them in the brush, or shoot a guard from a distance, wait for all his buddies to come looking for me, then sneak through while they're busy searching. And the game ENCOURAGES this. Or, if I'm not in the mood for sneaking, I can borrow a boat from the Dock at the bar and take the river route. Very few guard posts and they're less likely to chase you. So if you think you're having a hard time, CHANGE your strategy. You're not limited by the game, you're limited by yourself. As for the game itself, its quite beautiful, at least before you start blowing it up. The fire effects are pretty awesome but still have a ways to go. Best I've ever seen, though. You can actually predict where the flame will go based on wind direction and terrain. What else can I say? The world is very immersive. AI is frustrating, but in a good way. Often I'll think I was perfectly hidden when someone will spot me becuase I poke a gun barrel around a corner. Often I'll kill a guard, think i'm in the clear then find out he had a buddy just down the road who saw me kill him. And sometimes that buddy will shoot off a flare and call MORE of his buddies to finish me off. All in all, this game punishes your mistakes to be sure, but definitely rewards good performance. So if you play this game, don't think that you're limited to roads or checkpoints. Don't think you have to kill every enemy or do every mission. Make the game yours. Kill some buffalo or zebras. And most of all DON'T get discouraged, where theres a will (and a lot of ammo) theres a way.… Expand

    The game is magnificent. In terms of atmosphere, it is second to none. Today's impatient run and gun on rails set will find it irritating - no worries, not for everyone. It has its faults.. patchy AI, instant guard post respawns. But overall a fabulous gaming experience, if only you will let it enfold you in its sweaty embrace.

Guns perform terrificly, and the all of the guns require you to unlock them first, making them ever so satisfying. The game is about survival and accomplishing your goal of killing the Jackal, in one way or another. It's great fun, and if you are a fan of the GTA series you may enjoy this. This really is a new shooter, the best way I can describe it is as a well pulled off first person Mercenaries, with much more realism. Sniper rifles perform as you'd expect, however don't expect too much long range shooting. Assault rifles are great up close, the weapon degradation is never very annoying as long as you maintain your weapons and don't use the rusty stuff the bad guys drop. Everyone complains about Malaria, but you have like 10 pills per bottle, and the attacks occur every 30 minutes to an hour, so you can potentially run 7-10 hours on average before having to do a short delivery mission to get more. People complaining about it are twitch gamers that should honestly stop whining and go back to xbox live. Visually the PC version is brilliant and left my mind boggled, even at DX9. I'm running and HD4870, 4GB of RAM, and 3.0Ghz E8400 and I get a good 30-50 FPS on ultra high, which looks a hell of a lot nice than the Xbox or PS3 version. Even on those versions the world looks very good, except for a dip in FPS. This is a great game, I highly recommend it! It does have DRM, but you get a install back if you uninstall the game! You get 5 installs, and with uninstall it's not a big deal. My only issues with the game: A few main missions are rediculous. I had to defend a barge that was under fire from all directions, while repairing it. I blew up a gunboat, and it landed on top of the boat, the part where I needed to be to repair the damn thing. It let me repair but I was hurting due to fire... If you dont have quicksave like on PC, that would have been ungodly hard to beat. Driving takes a long time. I wish they would have had some ambient radio like in GTA to keep you occupied. Checkpoints are annoying, but you eventually learn how to buzz past them or around them. Great game overall!… Expand

I find it baffling that the creators could produce such a detailed and imaginative environment and such a beautifully crafted fighting system only to come up with the most unimaginative and simply boring mission system to go over it! Assassination or Sabotage, thats it, thats all you will be doing for 30 hours and every time you go to get a mission your heart sinks a little bit 'Oh! What a surprise! you want someone dead! I didnt see that coming! ive only gone and done that 13 times already! Its ok..This time ill try using nothing but a flare gun.' I would give this game 10 if they had spent the time varying the missions how about these possibilities: Undercover Missions, Hunting Missions, Decoy Missions, Puzzle Missions, Rescue Missions, VIP Missions etc etc . For my playthrough, I adopted a full stealth strategy. Silenced Pistol, sniper rifle, and a rocket launcher if I needed a lot of bang. When I first started, though, I was popping caps left and right with a shotgun and flamethrower. But the thing about this game is that you're NOT relegated to any one experience. As I said, I adopted a stealth strategy. How do I deal with checkpoints? Either sneak around them in the brush, or shoot a guard from a distance, wait for all his buddies to come looking for me, then sneak through while they're busy searching. And the game ENCOURAGES this. Or, if I'm not in the mood for sneaking, I can borrow a boat from the Dock at the bar and take the river route. Very few guard posts and they're less likely to chase you. So if you think you're having a hard time, CHANGE your strategy. You're not limited by the game, you're limited by yourself. As for the game itself, its quite beautiful, at least before you start blowing it up. The fire effects are pretty awesome but still have a ways to go. Best I've ever seen, though. You can actually predict where the flame will go based on wind direction and terrain. What else can I say? The world is very immersive. AI is frustrating, but in a good way. Often I'll think I was perfectly hidden when someone will spot me becuase I poke a gun barrel around a corner. Often I'll kill a guard, think i'm in the clear then find out he had a buddy just down the road who saw me kill him. And sometimes that buddy will shoot off a flare and call MORE of his buddies to finish me off. All in all, this game punishes your mistakes to be sure, but definitely rewards good performance. So if you play this game, don't think that you're limited to roads or checkpoints. Don't think you have to kill every enemy or do every mission. Make the game yours. Kill some buffalo or zebras. And most of all DON'T get discouraged, where theres a will (and a lot of ammo) theres a way.… Expand

The game's Story Mode is interesting and different than most I've played and displays the most awesome realistic 3-D graphics I've ever seen in a game. You create a profile and select who you are in the game and go from there. The beginner weapons are not to powerful or accurate, unless you get the Fortunes Pack add-on with the game, which has some very powerful weapons, vehicles and extra maps in it. The way that fire propagates with the direction of the wind and type of grass or brush adds a sense of reality to the game. The dynamic weather component and time of day (24 hour clock), adds realism and dynamics to the entire game environment. The story is simple and after you perform the minimal training required to open the game up into 1 of 4 starting points, your play options are almost endless. Healing yourself is a graphical experience you may or may not enjoy, because there are several types of heals that you do to yourself. Unlike most of the shooter games I have, you don't play the game in levels, you simply play the same game with changing dynamics and weapons. The game opens options as you make choices of how you want to customize your game experience as you play, which is like reading a book that you just can't seem to put down. I played this mode for a couple of months before playing multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode is a first-class first person shooter game. The action is as intense as the graphics is gamer eye-candy. The server interface really needs to be re-engineered, in my opinion, but there are ways to get around the difficulties, which I have found very easy to do. The Far Cry 2 team developed one of the most awesome games I have, but that's not all you get either. There are many more freebies that are also included with the base game. 1.) There is a Far Cry 2 Benchmark test so you can test your system to perform and look any way you customize it and then you can tune the game to play according to reported results. 2.) There is one of the most powerful map editor programs I have ever seen. You can download any map, look at it and even go into the map in "game mode" and walk, run, or drive through the map. You can shoot, get ammo, heal yourself, blow stuff up, and even start fires, just to see how the map looks. The map creation tools are among the best. If you like designing and making game maps, you need to put your creativity hat on and get to work with this feature rich editor. The old phrase; "Amaze your friends." comes to mind when I saw how powerful this editor's tools are. 3.) Launch Server, which needs some brain power to discuss, but not here and now. The UBIsoft forums have great help in getting your server online, which may be a cool thing for you to do, just so you can play with your friends and family. I was looking for a game that I could afford to purchase for myself and some of my family and have it cheap enough that some of my gaming friends could also afford to purchase a copy. The current price for both the base game and the Fortunes Pack made it very affordable.… Expand

Well, I wouldn't call fc2's saving system console like - there are quicksaves on F5. No women ? Then what about Michelle, Nasreen...? The rest of his "objective" thoughts is just nitpicking or plain bullcrap. The only thing I didn't like about this game is the respawning rates of guards on the posts. It gets annoying after a while.     I play Infamous with the Real Mode mod. There is also a Realism mod that is really good. I only save when I close the game. I do most everything at night and it makes a HUGE difference. I don't fast travel, I seldom drive and I don't take out guard posts without reason. I stick to the objective. This game is immersive. It's the best FPS I've ever played.    … Expand

Enemies respawn way too quickly, guns degrade way too quickly and there are too many enemy jeeps driving around. I also wish the map was a little more open as a lot of the time the roads just go through canyons. It would be really cool if it was just uninterrupted savannah for several kilometres. Unfortunately, however, cliffs and canyons appear every few hundred metres even in the most open areas. This game should have had civilians because not all people should attack you on sight. Ubisoft said before the release of the game that it had wicked car chases but I just find myself switching to the gun as soon as I see an enemy vehicle and blasting the crap out of them. They really should have made patrolling enemy vehicles equipped with no weapons. I would have prefered to work for one faction with an in-depth storyline because I found the story to be the only major let-down in the game. Yes, the game has a lot of flaws but the reason I rate it so high is because it attempted something no other game has before. To get the most out of this game, just enjoy the open-world with heaps of awesome weapons and the ability to kill mercenaries in any gruesome way you see fit. If you don't like this game, it isn't so much that it is a "bad game", but more that it isn't your style of game.… Expand

This nonlinear sandbox of a game isn't for the impatient, but for those willing to invest a bit of time in a game, the reward is enormous! One last thing: find a big truck and hold on to it for dear life. Your truck is your transportation, your shield, your weapon and your portable road blockade, all in one.

    Awesome game. I lived in Africa for 18 years and spent a good deal of time in the bush......this allows me to roam through very well portrayed landscape. A short coming would be that there should have been the big 5... and adding danger to the roaming. Gunfights were great and I loved the story. Scenery was awesome.

    I have always loved Ubisoft games, such as Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell, but lately it has been seeming to me like video games have become less entertaining over the years. But than I downloaded Far Cry 2 and lets just say with more games like this everyone should still be amazed by video games. Unforgettable game. A must play.

Hitting a bush with a car in real life doesn't make the car completely stop and raise the back wheels into the air, a wall would do that!     i love this game!its so amazing i don't have enough words to describe it.
    the graphics are very cool and unique, the shooting is amazing and i especially like the blood after you shoot and the sound of it .there are alot of amazing maps in the game and some only for sniper that are very good also.there are alot classes to choose from and the gameplay is amazing in multiplayer .

    the singleplayer is less fun its the same concept over and over again but its still isn't bad.the only bad thing in it is the multiplayer bugs but you can live with it.

    An island for me to do lots of funny or crazy things thats one of what i need.Although it may takes a feel of bore as time passes by.Seek for diamonds or just sit into a car to drive casualy,complete quests of two opposite forces-a good game.

Personally, I am not a big fan of linear gameplay, preferring open, 'sandbox' games like the GTA series, so to me Far Cry 2 is a breath of fresh air. Being able to move around at your own pace, in a very realistic world (in terms of audio/graphics, at least), and come up with your own tactics rather than having to follow a set path makes this a lot of fun.

    I've dropped 1 point because of the instantly-respawning enemies (as mentioned in many other reviews) and because if you cause trouble, run away, and come back, everyone seems to have forgotten about you, which is weird. The story is a little weak, but honestly, who really wants 20-minute-long cut scenes? In short, this beautiful and open-ended game doesn't stick to the conventions of FPSes, and that makes it something unique.    … Expand

You avoid combat unless you need not to or have a great advantage, if you are discovered by a multitude of enemies, you wreak havoc and run for your life. You infiltrate during the night, not the daytime. You don't drive around on the road near checkpoints in a country at war. You kill without mercy and you get better at it as the game goes on. Not through XP and levels, but just by improving. That's an amazing experience in itself.

    If you think carefully, stealth around a bit and plan your approach, there's literally no game ever made that'll reward you like this one will. You can choose to go in hard with granades and LMGs, or snipe from a hill top or sneak up close and take them down one at a time (or not take them down and just do what you came for). You'll pull off amazing infiltrations and assassinations, you'll experience an enemy truly scared of you and you play a story that transcends any attempted in a shooter before. Based on Conrad's great novel "The Heart of Darkness" (like Apocalypse Now is), you'll get an interesting and raw approach to Africa and the wars that ravage the continent. This game actually has something to say and it knows how to say it. It is, however, not a sandbox, casual fun shooter and it was a mistake to market it as such.

    A word of advice, put the game on top difficulty. The AI seems broken on the lower ones and the game doesn't become too hard on the hardest one. Just as long as you remember that if you're outnumbered five to one and they know where you are, you're not going to win. At least not always.    … Expand

    To all those people rating this low... I can understand why.
    However, when you get older and your tastes start maturing you'll start to appreciate this game.
    You are probably looking for that stunning girl with amazing personality and deep conversation, with a cracking body and a good sense of humour. Far Cry 2 is more like a 45 year old woman, past her prime but still attractive, and delivers where it really matters... the bedroom.
    I have no idea where im going with this analogy....
    ..oh yeah.
    The latter is definitely much more of a challenge to get involved with but once you crack it and those stilletoes are diggin into your back and shes calling you a piece of dirt... you will be way more satisfied.    … Expand

Not to mention the hideous controls, which are unresponsive and make movement more awkward than any other game. Hence why on multiplayer there is practically auto-aim rather than aim assist.     I love the setting and mood of this game, not to mention the lack of a HUD which increases immersion. Combat is very fun, with capable AI opponents that turn psychotic in vehicles. There is nothing like shooting a flare pistol at someone in the dark and lighting them and the surroundings on fire. Missions do get repetitive, but the incredible landscape and enjoyable combat compensate forI love the setting and mood of this game, not to mention the lack of a HUD which increases immersion.     I only just recently got into Far Cry 2. Previously, I had played the first one, and enjoyed it greatly. When I noticed that a second one had come out, I decided I had to try it out. My first impressions, before even playing it, were slightly low, seeing that the game was not released by CryTek, but instead, Ubisoft (not a huge fan of them.) However, Giving it a try, I was met with a newI only just recently got into Far Cry 2. Previously, I had played the first one, and enjoyed it greatly. When I noticed that a second one had come out, I decided I had to try it out. My first impressions, before even playing it, were slightly low, seeing that the game was not released by CryTek, but instead, Ubisoft (not a huge fan of them.) However, Giving it a try, I was met with a new experience on this game. It ran great on my computer, a lower-end machine (running Intel HD Graphics) with a close to 35 FPS and only had issues with slightly lengthy loading periods. I was amazed by how the atmosphere of the game was. The landscape portrayed many elements of the African area it takes place in, from deserts, to forests, to grasslands and everything in between. Even more amazing to me was the implicated weather system and realistic natural elements, such as being able to burn vegetation, and the sun moving relative to the time of day (in game time.) What sold me most on this score of 10 was the fact that all this was done, and so much was fit into the game, without me having to close processes to free up memory. This game is one of the few games I would give a 10 to, and it deserves it. I will be looking forward to Far Cry 3, and hope that it amazes me once again.… Expand

    well... it maybe true its repetitive, but open world, and nice graphic is priceless. i like the way we roam the big world, doing things we want to try... and it is not really that boring, if you are the types of person who like it. But, i believe FarCry3 would be the best because it really have soul in its character (i saw the trailer and it was amazing).

    Really brilliant! Awesome! The gameplay and the AI are just perfect to the entertainment of the gamer. I liked so much, but I only think that sometimes the game is too difficult, and complex to novice players.

Far Cry 2 is tough as nails but if you actually have a backbone then you should be willing to accept the challenge. The graphics for this game are pretty, and I'm never disappointed with the graphics, I'm just not always in awe, which is okay. The NPC "buddies" system is really cool. If you save a guy from a outpost, in free roam or mission, he will them become your 'buddy". This is cool already, but get this: One time I was running on foot, with little health and no syringes. Suddenly I get brought down from a accurate enemy shot, and then I think i'm dead. After a short black screen, the game comes back to one of my NPC buddies helping me up, and handing me a weapon. Then me and him get into an epic firefight against the remaining 8 enemies. We actually won, but the realistic manner in which the enemy attacked was marvelous. I was amazed how a few of them left to run through the foliage to get a better shooting position on our exposed flanks, while the percentage of the enemies stayed and continued to engage us head-on. My NPC buddy was also very helpful in combat, and he actually killed a couple more guys than I did. The whole firefight lasted something like 10 mins, and to this day was one of the most epic non-scripted video game firefights I've been in.… Expand

    The progress you get for doing missions are diamonds, which means new equipment, which means new ways to approach and deal with what Africa throws at you.     The AI is not dumb, the game just isn't holding your hand with visual/audible pointers of how close you are to being spotted.
    They can get suspicious, team up to search the area they saw something in, or they'll deem it safe enough to check out alone.
    They'll carry their wounded, hear a body dropping to the ground if it's close enough, they'll attack the last position they saw you in, they'll lose track of you.
    Is it night? They'll have a harder time seeing you.
    Is it windy and/or raining? They'll have a harder time seeing you.
    Is it broad daylight? Take big detours and watch out for snipers if you want to stay hidden.
    That's a heck of a lot more intelligence than the average FPS.
    They also feel human compared to other shooters, they'll shoot the breeze with each other when undisturbed, communicate with each other under combat, pep-talk, become terrified as they realize they're on their own with a guy who just killed everyone they worked with.

    The game has flaws, such as enemies re-spawning when you get a certain distance away from a checkpoint (really though Far Cry 3's system meant there was nothing to do in an area ever again after clearing them). The lack of any friendly AI, and overly aggressive drivers that will not stop chasing you. The weapon degradation system is incomplete, with the only way to avoid it is to grab a new gun often. The malaria attacks doesn't really add anything but an annoyance. The buddy rescue system is a genius second-chance mechanic that won't abruptly end your story, but other than that the buddies are shallow and without use.

    Immerse yourself in a game that 'll never take you out of your character's view, you'll reach out to grab stuff, you'll snap fingers back into place, pull shrapnel and bullets out of your arm. Watch your character pull and bang on his weapon when they jam. Even the shop shows you pull out the chair and sit down in front of an old monochrome monitor.
    Plan ahead with your equipment, scout the locations to look for opportunities, and watch the game react to your actions. There's nothing like starting a fire at a safe distance, and hear the AI panic, only to later have a rocket stash ignite and send rockets everywhere.
    The missions are simple because it's up to you to make it interesting with the mechanics the game provides. The world is a box of fireworks waiting to go off one by one. Don't put on blinders and look straight at the mission objective, the mission is also to get there. The journey is part of the mission, part of your story.

    Overall, if you're the kind of person who likes to put some thought and creativity into his shooting, hates being led by the nose in his FPS, a game you can play over and over without it ever being the same, there's no game that will reward you more than Far Cry 2. And it remains my all-time top 5 single-player game.    … Expand

There are also elements that make no sense, an example being guard outposts simply respawning their guards ridiculously quickly. A better way to do handle this could have involved new guards driving out the outpost from bases and replacing the old one: even if this happened in real-time it would take longer than vanilla FC2's magically respawning guards.
    All in all Far Cry 2 is nowhere near perfect but gets criticized a lot harder than I believe it should and I definitely recommend trying it out, especially if you played 3 and wanted something harder.    … Expand

They will also use flanking maneuvers and split up. If thats not enough, the whole game is free roam and theres a whole bunch of NPC "buddies" that have different storys and can help you.     I'm going to start like this: To the guy that complained about how it crashed; computers are complicated business. Crashes are rare normally, and if you had an issue with them, consult the Steam support team. Also, if it took 2 hours to download, that's your problem only.     Onto a review :)
    Far Cry 2 is a complicated game. Hard to get the most out of, but if you do, you're in for a treat. The gameplay is essentially like that of any other FPS, but tweaked towards realism.
    The immersive aspect is executed brilliantly, except for the very few graphical glitches to be seen about 2 - 4 times in a play through. Most of the time though, it's something that you see and think "Oh, that's wierd. Oh, wait. It's gone."
    Graphically, the game is impeccable. The environment interacts with all of the tiny little models and everything you can see. Trees blow realistically in the wind, and fires will soon see them nothing short of a black stump with branches.
    Vehicles are nicely implemented. Helping you get from A to B with minimal effort. Just watch out for guard posts. While most people complain about the guard posts, I like them. I'm a fan of tactical gameplay. Which is something you'll have to learn to be able to properly enjoy FC2. Anyone used to running and gunning may want to stick to playing online.
    The scope of the world is amazing. Every little detail is beautifully rendered thanks to the technical mastery behind the Dunia engine. Anyone that doesn't like this game is probably just not a fan of the style of play. The game itself is impeccable. If you're a fan of tactical gamplay, mixed with realism and immersion, buy it. If you're looking for just another shooter, go back to CoD4.
    I'm giving it an 8/10.
    It'd get a 10 if it had Co-op. :(

Add to the roughly 25 hour single-player campaign a remarkably easy-to-use map creation tool and a full multiplayer suite, and you've got one of the most complete overall gaming packages of the year, as well as one of the most ambitious.
