Erm, why has this got a user score of 5.6? The console version is terrible compared to PC. On consoles it's running at 720, 30 FPS and on lower graphics and FoV. On PC however, the framerates are smooth, graphics are better in every way due to DX10 support controls are better... I guess it's because PC gamers compare it to Crysis and the first Far Cry whereas those console kids haven't seen the good stuff. Whilst it's true that this is notthing like the first game, I think that it makes it better because it shows there's been some work done and it isn't just copy and paste. The actual gameplay experience is more similar than you might think, but you couldn't tell it's a Far Cry game without the title. Regardless, it's still a fantastic game, with my only criticism being the lack of players in ranked matches on multiplayer. Expand

Far Cry 2 does not deserve a 5.6. It deserves an 8.7 IMO, because this game is amazing and was way ahead of its time. The driving is just what it should be. Vehicles steer nicely and are easy to drive. The vehicles are what a poor African country would have (old cars, buggies with a place for gunners, heavy assault trucks, ammo trucks, ATV's, and rare jeeps). The towns may not be what you expect; they have no civilians and look extremely poor. The missions are good and the game really creates a sense of "you're in it for the money, nothing else." This is a great game, and I hope you get it! Expand

A misunderstood game. People bash it for being repetitive, when it's really no more repetitive than the player.
The progress you get for doing missions are diamonds, which means new equipment, which means new ways to approach and deal with what Africa throws at you. It gives you plenty of toys, but it seems the average player sticks with the full-auto approach the whole way through.

The AI is not dumb, the game just isn't holding your hand with visual/audible pointers of how close you are to being spotted.
They can get suspicious, team up to search the area they saw something in, or they'll deem it safe enough to check out alone.
They'll carry their wounded, hear a body dropping to the ground if it's close enough, they'll attack the last position they saw you in, they'll lose track of you.
Is it night? They'll have a harder time seeing you.
Is it windy and/or raining? They'll have a harder time seeing you.
Is it broad daylight? Take big detours and watch out for snipers if you want to stay hidden.
That's a heck of a lot more intelligence than the average FPS.
They also feel human compared to other shooters, they'll shoot the breeze with each other when undisturbed, communicate with each other under combat, pep-talk, become terrified as they realize they're on their own with a guy who just killed everyone they worked with.

The game has flaws, such as enemies re-spawning when you get a certain distance away from a checkpoint (really though Far Cry 3's system meant there was nothing to do in an area ever again after clearing them). The lack of any friendly AI, and overly aggressive drivers that will not stop chasing you. The weapon degradation system is incomplete, with the only way to avoid it is to grab a new gun often. The malaria attacks doesn't really add anything but an annoyance. The buddy rescue system is a genius second-chance mechanic that won't abruptly end your story, but other than that the buddies are shallow and without use.

Immerse yourself in a game that 'll never take you out of your character's view, you'll reach out to grab stuff, you'll snap fingers back into place, pull shrapnel and bullets out of your arm. Watch your character pull and bang on his weapon when they jam. Even the shop shows you pull out the chair and sit down in front of an old monochrome monitor.
Plan ahead with your equipment, scout the locations to look for opportunities, and watch the game react to your actions. There's nothing like starting a fire at a safe distance, and hear the AI panic, only to later have a rocket stash ignite and send rockets everywhere.
The missions are simple because it's up to you to make it interesting with the mechanics the game provides. The world is a box of fireworks waiting to go off one by one. Don't put on blinders and look straight at the mission objective, the mission is also to get there. The journey is part of the mission, part of your story.

Overall, if you're the kind of person who likes to put some thought and creativity into his shooting, hates being led by the nose in his FPS, a game you can play over and over without it ever being the same, there's no game that will reward you more than Far Cry 2. And it remains my all-time top 5 single-player game.

The graphics for this game are pretty, and I'm never disappointed with the graphics, I'm just not always in awe, which is okay. The NPC "buddies" system is really cool. If you save a guy from a outpost, in free roam or mission, he will them become your 'buddy". This is cool already, but get this: One time I was running on foot, with little health and no syringes. Suddenly I get brought down from a accurate enemy shot, and then I think i'm dead. After a short black screen, the game comes back to one of my NPC buddies helping me up, and handing me a weapon. Then me and him get into an epic firefight against the remaining 8 enemies. We actually won, but the realistic manner in which the enemy attacked was marvelous. I was amazed how a few of them left to run through the foliage to get a better shooting position on our exposed flanks, while the percentage of the enemies stayed and continued to engage us head-on. My NPC buddy was also very helpful in combat, and he actually killed a couple more guys than I did. The whole firefight lasted something like 10 mins, and to this day was one of the most epic non-scripted video game firefights I've been in. Expand

This isn't a game for kids. If you play this game like you play every other FPS game, you'll hate it and complain about it. This game keeps you in the game... I play Infamous with the Real Mode mod. There is also a Realism mod that is really good. I only save when I close the game. I do most everything at night and it makes a HUGE difference. I don't fast travel, I seldom drive and I don't take out guard posts without reason. I stick to the objective. This game is immersive. It's the best FPS I've ever played.

    - Options. Yes, missions are all similar (not to mention the never-ending checkpoints), but you are mostly free to tackle them the way you want. SInce it's not script-based, no event ever plays in the same way: you could try to tackle a mission ten times, and it would develop differently every time.
    - Combat options. The above it's true for combat as well: you have many weapons to choose from, but you have to compromise (due to its three-slots system). So you have to choose your combat style and choose the weapons accordingly, forcing you to adapt your combat style to the resources available. Save for trying a different weapons setup later, and invent a different approach. Almost limitless combinations.

I won't go into the negatives here, because they have already been discussed a lot.

I just add that, despite the hours of fun I had (I think 60 hours of gameplay), this game left me with a sense of sadness in the end. Maybe it was because the final part is mostly linear (and after all the previous freedom it feels oppressive); maybe because it felt like all my previous efforts - in the end - amounted to nothing. I don't know.
I mostly had a blast playing it (with the occasional frustration), but it left me with this tinge of sadness - so I don't know if I want to play it again (like I thought I would, while playing it).

Anyway it was a hell of a ride, and I'm truly grateful for this experience :-)

It is worth saying that there are many innovations in the game compared to the 1st game. Many more positive innovations such as rusting and not working of the weapon, jamming, self-healing animations after being hit, hit feeling, weapon variety have been brought. If we talk about the cons of the game, it constantly repeats itself and does not give much space to cutscenes. Also, the Finale wasn't that satisfying.

In terms of gameplay, Far Cry is still the same. Whether you play stealth or skirmish, the choice is yours.

In summary, the story about the African theme and these civil wars is worth giving a shot.

That was the issue that pissed me off the most. And there are snipers that it took me 5 minutes to see. The game does not have such a great story. I played with pleasure up to 54%, but the lack of fast travel feature spoiled my mood a bit. They made a fast travel in the style of a bus stop, giving importance to realism, but the number of stops is very few. And also; 10 minutes to go to the task, 2 minutes to do the task. I think the missions were a bit lacking. I'll add a final addition and close my comment. There are really a lot of bugs in the game. It's not as cool as the game, on the contrary, it's funny. After we give the passports to the man we went to buy medicine, the man starts jumping and flying in the air. He gives the medicine to my hand as I go left and right.
There is no cutscene in the game, you have to do that scene. The character that gives the task does not start to speak before you move to the place where the codes put it. Dr. Gakumba starts shaking his head after giving me the mission.

I dont understand why people give this game a bad rating. The graphics are excellent, sound is very good, and story is okay. But the enemies are a little mind less but that really doesn't make a difference unless you play on hard (I play on medium) This game is enjoyable.

It looks great, fire looks awesome, the changes in weather and day/nights are breathtaking at times. +1 for no aliens. I stopped playing Far Cry after half a level of those mutants. That completely broke the game for me. +1 for malaria, jamming guns, "field surgery", cars being fixable instead of either brand new or exploding. Yes, the animations can be tedious but I actually enjoyed having to be rescued by a buddy after a gun jammed while I ran in Rambo-style and I got swamped. It's not a "run in guns blazing" game for me, so these little interruptions add a bit of depth for me. +1 for the map system. I rock at getting lost in any single game, but the paper map guides me without breaking immersion. What may make the difference between me and a lot of people that give low ratings is that I am in no way in a hurry to finish the game. I enjoy looking around, circling a camp a few times to plan my assault. I am fine with spending time to drive to my missions, it adds realism and gives me a chance to look at the scenery. I just love the different subzones, ranging from desert to almost jungle-like. If they patch the respawn rates and amount of bullets the enemy can take, I'll be playing a near-perfect game. Expand

I'll say it right off the bat, this game is essentially a first-persion version of GTA set in Africa. The graphics are great, and my "meager" 8800 GTS was able to run it on almost full settings. This game is great. I dont know whats all the hoopla about the DRM problems but if you buy the game on steam, you have no DRM problems. I was following the development of this game with great interest. Ever since Operation Flashpoint, back in 2001, I have been seeking a diverse, open landscape in which to develop tactics and strategies, to think ahead, use one's initiative, exploit the weather, find and use cover; in other words, to have an FPS that is steeped in atmosphere, in a 'sense of place', yet which I was following the development of this game with great interest. Video trailers of the game in development showed such promise. In part, this game delivers. The first time my heart stopped, listening to the rustling of the leaves as I was about to squeeze the trigger of the sniper rifle, the sensation was electric. I've stopped at a bus stop in order to simply watch the sunrise, which gave the grass and the hills a golden sheen. Stunning. But I've only been playing for a few days, and there may well be a problem around repetition, since having to criss-cross the beautifully-rendered landscape will decrease the charm of the whole thing. At the moment I find it utterly immersive and compelling, and much more satisfying than Crysis, GTA or Mercenaries (there are echoes of each in this game, strangely enough). But the 'feel' of the weapons, the way the crusty old ones not just look but also sound different, and jam up on you, gives a real viscerality to the gunfights - very exciting. Expand

Checkpoints on all the major intersections, plus frequent road patrols, detract from the fun of the game, and the massive size of the map leads to almost constant boredom when forced to travel to one side of the map and then back again. The missions are varied and very fun, the graphics are very tight and run far smoother than its cousin Crysis, and the AI is comprised of relative genius (taking cover when they hear a sniper rifle, and then jumping to another bit of cover immediately after your next shot). Onto a review :)
Far Cry 2 is a complicated game. Hard to get the most out of, but if you do, you're in for a treat. The gameplay is essentially like that of any other FPS, but tweaked towards realism.
The immersive aspect is executed brilliantly, except for the very few graphical glitches to be seen about 2 - 4 times in a play through. Most of the time though, it's something that you see and think "Oh, that's wierd. Oh, wait. It's gone."
Graphically, the game is impeccable. The environment interacts with all of the tiny little models and everything you can see. Trees blow realistically in the wind, and fires will soon see them nothing short of a black stump with branches.
Vehicles are nicely implemented. Helping you get from A to B with minimal effort. Just watch out for guard posts. While most people complain about the guard posts, I like them. I'm a fan of tactical gameplay. Which is something you'll have to learn to be able to properly enjoy FC2. Anyone used to running and gunning may want to stick to playing online.
The scope of the world is amazing. Every little detail is beautifully rendered thanks to the technical mastery behind the Dunia engine. Anyone that doesn't like this game is probably just not a fan of the style of play. The game itself is impeccable. If you're a fan of tactical gamplay, mixed with realism and immersion, buy it. If you're looking for just another shooter, go back to CoD4.
    I'm giving it an 8/10.
    It'd get a 10 if it had Co-op. :(
Oh, you might want to invest in a computer with at least 1.5GB of RAM and a9600GT or better :)

I myself liked to move at night and scout the checkpoints from a distance. Also the rivers will be pretty easy to travel. Guns will jam and even break, but that's why you can buy your own weapons and your cases for those. That way you can have a new (and even different) weapon available in every safehouse you've unlocked. If you're looking for relatives of Far Cry, this game isn't for you. I'll mention those right off the bat: (1) the lack of civilians and (2) the lack of skirmishes between the UFLL and APR throughout the countryside. Honestly, including these 2 aspects would make the game feel complete, even if the story or reputation system were not fully fleshed out. Readers, please think about these points. If FC2 included NPCs that did not attack you upon sight, such as the bus/taxi drivers (where did that guy at the beginning go? did he book for another country right after dropping you off in Pala?), the world would feel much more multi-dimensional. Instead, after hours of gameplay, the fact that EVERYONE (ok, just about everyone) attacks you becomes rather...goofy. Also, where the hell are the battles between the UFLL and APR? Again, it seems like its you vs. Africa and that makes FC2 feel more like any other FPS rather than a living microcosm. Sure, cease fires in the city makes sense, but have these factions just drawn a border across the map that they all abide by? I would love if an NPC pointed its firearm at someone besides me! So why the 8/10? Partially because the graphics, although not as realistic per say as Crysis, just work. The motion blur, fire, exaggerated explosions, and model animations are top notch. But mainly, regardless of the 2 above mentioned downfalls, weak MAIN story, and repetitiveness, the gameplay is THE BEST AMONG ANY FPS. FC2 plays like an improved COD4. Shooting weapons feels amazingly visceral, bullet penetrations is incredible, fire prorogation is actually very tactical, and, all in all, the games just immerses you in the game world. Expand

Maybe Ubisoft should have emphasised the different style of game in there marketing more to make people understand... once you understand this you tend to be a bit more cunning, using the rivers, driving across plains, and simply running through gaurd posts in your jeep, jumping on the gun to stop anyone in vehicles following you. They could have varied the mission a little more though - especially the "destroy the arms convoy" to gain new weapons... they're very samey... but as you get new weapons and experiment with how you approach missions, you can get creative in a way that you just can't seem to in linear shooters. Graphics are amazing - best I've ever seen I think, but also because of the atmosphere... it really does feel like you're in an African country got to hell. What's more it runs far better than Crysis - very smooth on high quality settings whereas the exact same rig playing Crysis will only get me medium settings for a slightly slower framerate. Who doesn't like using their multi-tool to extract bullets from their leg while fixing their broken shotgun by pounding on it? The situations and dialogue are probably not that realistic, but the paranoid style of it is great, rather unique. The reason I like Far Cry 2 as a gamer is because it carries ideals that are notably absent from most multi-platform releases; an interesting variation on level structure and environment for what is essentially a CoD-ish shooter. Definitely NOT Crysis, not crafted as skillfully (the levels never reach the level of scope as the more focused chapter-based approach of Crysis does), but is nevertheless much larger - and although some areas are boxy, other areas (e.g. lake in 1st half) have a great, natural presentation when you come across them. The environment doesn't feel as random as F:NV or Oblivion, most of it feels deliberately constructed. I think with a few basic changes, more incentive to run around the levels (see: GTA, Fallout, etc), the Far Cry 2 template could go from "cool / intriguing" to "really fun to play". At times the game is gorgeous, not as technically varied as Crysis, but that sun-blasted hard-shadowed plastic look really kills it in the dense jungles and muddy river canyons. Expand

There is an emphasis on exploration and while it is rewarding and fun to find new locations your primary means of transport is a jeep. This would be fine if the driving mechanics weren't so awful.
The survival elements are well designed and for the most part well implemented. There are also elements that make no sense, an example being guard outposts simply respawning their guards ridiculously quickly. A better way to do handle this could have involved new guards driving out the outpost from bases and replacing the old one: even if this happened in real-time it would take longer than vanilla FC2's magically respawning guards.

There are many missions you can undertake outside of the main story, and there are many more things to do. The first person shooter elements are handled quite well too. This game plays like your average first person shooter, using WASD to move, and the mouse to fire and all that stuff. One element in this game that is very unique to the gameplay (aside from combining the open world and shooter genres), is how realistic it all is. This game is literally the most realistic game I have ever played. This adds several good elements to the game, but it also adds a few bad ones. Healing is a good one. Along with this, being a character struck with malaria also adds a nice twist to make the game a little bit harder than your average shooter. However, one bad thing about this element of realism is that weapons have a tendency to jam. The more you use your weapon, the dirtier it gets, and the more likely it is to jam. When a weapon jams, you have a few precious seconds to unjam it before it explodes in your face and you have to replace it. Another problem with this game is how redundant it is. It is not Call of Duty levels redundant, however, it is redundant enough to get annoying. For example, there is so much back tracking to do in just about all of this game's missions, and this usually leads you to encounters at enemy bases you have already cleared. Redundancy and realism aside, the gameplay is still really good. As for the graphics, this game handles them well too. The graphics in this game are absolutely stunning. They are among the best graphics I've ever seen in a video game. All the textures in this game are very beautiful, and very detailed. The characters look good enough, but the setting is the most beautiful part. As a matter of fact, the setting is so well designed, that it may as well be the best part of the entire game. It is set in Africa, and it shows, through its amazing savannah, and its beautiful jungles. Even the cities and villages in this game look beautiful. The graphics in this game are so beautiful it's crazy. As for the story, it falls under the pretty good, but not great category. Basically, you are a mercenary sent to kill an arms dealer named the Jackal who has armed both sides of a conflict in an unknown African nation. The premise alone is very good, however, the character development in this game is pretty bad. None of the characters are well developed, and you never learn anything about them. The setting of this game somewhat makes up for this, however, there is one problem with it that I just can't get over: not enough African wildlife. There are only a few zebras and wildebeests here and there, and not much else. The story of this game is pretty good overall, but not as good as it could be. Overall, I'd say that this game is quite good. It is not the best game ever made or anything, however, it is still very good, and worth playing through. I recommend this game to anyone who just wants to play a shooter set in Africa. This game would suit them perfectly

This game you can either love or hate. On a technical side it is great even almost 10 years later. Since it is open-world, you can choose how to approach most situations, where to attack from and so on. There are weapons for a stealthy approach and for a loud one. But even with all this freedom it doesn't empower the player like most shooters nowadays. Far Cry 2 seems more like a semi-survival game. Every outpost has soldiers who will attack on sight, you have malaria that you need to treat, the guns degrade and break. It creates this feeling of constant uneasiness and pressure.

Ironically, the console version is harder because it has no quicksaves. I advise you to play it without quicksaving, rather using only savehouses to save the progress. It's risky since you can get killed and lose 10, 20, even 30 minutes of progress but it feels much more rewarding when you complete a mission and get to the precious savebox in the savehouse. I don't really remember any fps game having such an interesting and hostile atmosphere and it does feel unique.

The AI is a little silly but that was made to allow stealth, that's why enemies can have a hard time noticing the player when they are right in front of them. I've played this game 3 times gradually increasing the difficulty and i have to say that the hardest difficulty is THE Far Cry 2 experience. it takes a lot of time, it's very punishing but it's also very rewarding.

Great game, the developers tried to go in a little bit of a different direction both story- and gameplay-wise but unfortunately the general public doesn't like when games don't hold their hand all the time so you see this game being bombarded by negative reviews. What's the most puzzling about their points of view is that they criticize the AI in Far Cry 2 but praise FC1 which has literally an even worse enemy AI and an awful second half of the game where you fight brain dead monsters.

    -------------Story spoilers start-------------------------------------------------------

Story in FC2 is not a very traditional one, it tries to show the conflict as a way for evil people to manipulate the folk to make money off of war but it's very subtle and i think it's great and not in-your-face social commentary or something like that.

    ------------------Story spoilers end-----------------------------------------------

Overall a very underappreciated FPS and truly one of the last games that tried doing something unique without childish 'LOL RANDOM INSANE' characters like in its sequels.

I love this game. The gun jamming I consider a fresh mechanic in the shooter genre. A shame this was never done by anyone after this game. The game takes place in a war-torn African nation, and the environment reminds you of this all the time. I like the HUD being extremely minimal. Only downside is all enemies respawn over and over again, which makes traversing the world annoying.

This is one of those games that won me over. I've played this game from when it was new on the PS3 to later on the PC, to much more recently on a better PC. Its one of those games that will immerse you like no other if you push yourself and the game. Hardest difficulty is something that changes the way you play.

I hated it when I first played it. Now I see it as something truly special.

You'll be driving down a road and get spotted then they would chase you until a- you killed them b-they drove off a cliff. Plus as mentioned, enemies and take a notorious amount of bullets. Also, the ability to cut across a river is sometimes useless. It does look nice though with all the shadows and wind. Basicly the same goes for all the buildings in the game there is not much variation. couple of types of buildings and thats it. The AI of the enemies are average and predictable, but decent enough. The missions ive dont so far were preet boring. I honestly dont notice any difference with just driving/walking around or doing a mission. The force of enemies you encounter is basicly the same. The Movement of the vehicles are good, they havedone a good job on that. The walking part is much less, especialy jumping sucks....or i should say in inabillity to jump. You can jump up, but still a low rock or wood log you cant jump over no matter how hard you try. Only whily holding the sprint button i made a few succesfull jump attempts....pretty horrible. When a game is good i can play it like 8 hours straight fith the first play. C.O.D 4 for examply i finished in 1 go. This game however just cant hold my excitement. after 1 hour of playing im done with it and go do something else. So far the game is fun enough to keep playing it, but gets pretty boring after a short time of playing. This game is an improvemt with the original Far Cry, especialy the graphics and the whole sandbox idea has improved, but it still lacks a lot of stuff and a lot of it is just not well finished. Looks to me that far cry is a rushed job by the developers. Jut like the game Creed, it has a lot of potential, but the developers didnt "develope" it enough. All in all, it is good enough to buy as a side game. Don't expect to much of it though. The first few hours are the most fun when the scenery is still new to you, but then the repetitiveness starts to kick in and you start to notice the things that are bad about this game. 6.5 for this game. Unfortunately it's one of those games that suffers in other areas enough to drag it down. Perhaps patching can rescue it, or an expansion or the next installment.

    It's problems:
    - Enemies can take a hail of bullets, even from high caliber weapons, before going down.
    - AI can be great and interesting at times and just down right stupid a lot of the other times
    - The constant re-spawning of check points that makes moving across the map tedious at best.
    - The story does nothing to engage the player, no connection, I feel no desire at all to finish the game.
    - The only real goal in the game is to get the weapons you want. Once you have em and have played with them the game doesn't really offer much else.
    - Rather simplistic weapon controls

    Stuff it did well:
    - Beautiful open world, amazingly well designed
    - Great graphics and engine that runs very smooth
    - Neat AI actions like rescuing a buddy or crawling to cover when injured

I found that sticking to the story missions led to the same assassinate/destroy missions BUT took me to cool locations like the Fort, Brewery, Scrap Yard, Mine, Desert Oasis, Fishing Village and more, each with a different feel. I did avoid side missions like the weapons guy and buddy missions because they were the same old but without the interesting locations, rather forcing you to traipse around the countryside. Buddy missions in particular felt like irritating strap-ons to the main mission, basically "finish the story mission then come save my ass". No thank you. My play style was to sneak about and snipe then wait for the enemy to come to me - if you enjoy skulking and sniping then you may well have some fun with this game. I also tended to largely avoid the roadblocks by using buses to insta-travel as well as using the map to go cross country via shortcuts that seem to be built into the game for that purpose. As an aside it should be noted that the actual plot is spectacularly retarded and if I had more of a choice I would have chosen to attack both the APR and UFLL. Overall for me the game was good but not great and had the potential to do a lot more. Expand

So, once you raise the difficulty, and ignore the cars the game is worth an 8.5/10. but i gave it a 7, because you should have to ignore certain gameplay aspects for a game to be fun Expand

The AI is blood-crazy, the malaria is pointless, buddies are unlikeable and psychic, and all the voice acting is awful. On the plus side, it's pretty, it lets you do what you like, and there are some truly epic firefights to be had. The big problems are: - how systematic the

Nothing like a game saying 'a gun jamming is realllll, malaria is more reallll.. adn then having me shoot a guy 5 times.. in the head.... at close range... to kill him? And why can't HIS gun jam?" I chalk this up to lead design not being able to take and implement internal criticism. or a CEO sticking to his guns on the wrong ideas. I say this because it is obvious that each and every element was executed remarkably by the artists, programmers and animators. What makes the game worth playing is simply the stunning environments. The developers smoothly mixed together lush jungles, grasslands, and some deserts that make trekking through FC2 endlessly fun. Another thing that never gets old is setting the world on fire, which creates interesting gameplay tactics and challenges. I also found the driving and especially the boating to be very enjoyable, particularly when combined with the fun of hunting down the diamond caches (ignoring the silliness of people leaving diamonds lying in briefcases around the world and you being the only one that can find them). The combat is also pretty good, although I tended to favor the mounted weapons a bit too much. But why wouldn't you? The mounted 50cal and grenade launcher (with unlimited ammo) are the most badass weapons in the game. One thing I didn't care much for was the weapon loadout system, which forces weapons into three types, of which you can only have one of each. I felt like this shut me out from being able to use some weapon loadouts like a sniper rifle plus an assault rifle. Another thing I didn't like was the oft-maligned instant respawning of enemies at checkpoints, which was really bothersome at first when your weapons are fairly weak and you don't have many syringes. Later on, the respawning is only a slight nuisance, however. The worst thing about this game is the story, or the nonexistence of a story. It doesn't make any sense ever. You're asked to do some rather vile things to people with little justification while neither of the two factions seem to care whether you've screwed them over in the past. Likewise, no one you encounter out in the world is friendly, no matter if you've helped their faction in the past. But if you like adventuring through the wild with frequent shootouts, Far Cry 2 is a good choice. Expand

The first time I've tried to play Far Cry 2, I was kinda overwhelmed and confused by the sheer size of the world and the long stretches to go from point A to point B so I've waited to have more time at hand to dive in.

So years after, I finally managed to properly play the game and it was both satisfying and... puzzling.

Among the strong point of Far Cry 2 is - of course - the core gameplay of shooting, the rendering of an african country (especially the blinding light and sensation of heat, the heavy rains, and majesty of its landscape), and the dereliction (palpable in either Malaria, weapon degradation, and also progressive loss of humanity).

Another great feature of the game is the immersion in a civil war setting, with several factions (UFLL, APR, civils and mercenaries, weapon dealers) you're kinda "forced" to work for in order to get medication, gain weapons, reputation, money, and potentially reach your objective and leave the country. Many gray areas here where - as one would say - it is kind of difficult to distinguish good from evil, where there is only human need of survival, instinct of greed and drive to power.

All of this led to a somewhat strange place : on one hand, I enjoyed the traversal (either by foot, by car or by boat), but not so much the random encounters that acted more as disturbance in the appreciation of landscape in a disconnected, tourist way.

Like many of FPS, I played it consciously in order to "get to end", but with a growing feeling of not really knowing where I was standing in the bigger picture, questioning my own morality (if not mortality in the face of such dreadful odds) and only left with my role as a hired gun working for the highest bidder, somewhat becoming a dark character.

For me, the most satisfying moment was the "heart of darkness", just after the prison, near the end, where everything somewhat fell in place. Evocation of Conrad's book acted as a huge relief, completely changing my perspective of the game - kinda like Bioshock ending.

So in my opinion, Far Cry 2 is a great game, not because it is an open world FPS, but because it makes you experience "the horror" and crushing power of an historical context than can lead people to commit atrocities. At some point, it's not possible to play Far Cry 2 solo storymode "for fun" - except if you embrace both the absurd and the madness.

Other than repetitiveness, the next big issue for me is the enemies instantly respawning when you're out of view. It's annoying to drive by, clear out an outpost, come back by the same outpost a few minutes after completing the objective and having to clear it out again.

The game does do things right however to warrant a purchase for $25 at the most. For one, the gunplay and shooting mechanics are top notch and killing is very satisfying. Second, there are loads of guns from shotguns to sniper rifles to crossbows with exploding arrows. It makes the game feel less repetitive and more fun to mix up your approach to combat whether it be a stealthy sniper or a rambo style where you charge in a base guns ablaze. I say give it a buy if you can find it for around $25 or less because unless you REALLY love the game's combat and can stand doing the same thing over and over, you probably won't be finishing the singleplayer.

In some areas you can't use weapons, thus making it impossible to kill certain key characters. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, it just sort of takes from what was originally promised. Really this is a fun game, but it gets super repetitive. The free roam aspect is great with the type of shooter it is, but there's no real variety in what sort of enemies you can fight and it almost seems like the game is purely kill or be killed. If you wander the deserts but run into a car that drives by, they're always enemies, and if you're spotted they'll want to kill you. Expand

For instance, the majority of the game is spent driving around from one objective to the other. Even if you're the most patient person in the world, the amount of driving is going to really grind on you eventually. Furthermore, the enemy variety in the game is basically non-existent, you're going to face the same AK toting enemies over and over for the entire play-through. Also, the enemies themselves possess amazing accuracy and self-awareness, to the point that simply breathing in their direction means that every one of them in the nearby radius will instantly know your position.

Far Cry isn't a bad game, it's quite fun in short stints. But it's just let down by the aforementioned AI problems and broken stealth game-play. With a bit of polish, developed story, improved fast travel system and some more variety in missions, it could have been great fun. As it stands, it's just "fun".

No prone option, seems pretty weird. Crysis had a prone position, and that game had you as an elite Delta Force guy in an uber nanosuit with a magical armor shield, as opposed to being a malaria patient wearing a hawaiian shirt.

This game runs **** awesome. I have to turn everything to Low to make Crysis playable, whereas here I can run pretty much everything on medium with 2x AA with silky smooth framerates. Definitely impressed, and while it doesn't quite look as amazing as Crysis, it's still pretty good. Think COD4 quality, or a notch above. Of course, COD4 didn't portray 50 square miles of terrain.

I was kinda disappointed by the weapon selection, just judging by the upgrade menu. Hopefully more guns'll get added to the list throughout the campaign, otherwise the selection isn't very impressive at all.

Another thing I noticed is that to use the weapon sights, you have to hold down the right mouse button, it doesn't work as a toggle like in other games. A little miffed by that at first, but you do get used to it. Not a gamebreaker.

Does anyone else feel the mouse sensitivity for the game menus is way too low? Just a minor nitpick of mine.

So far, it seems pretty easy, and I'm playing it on Hardcore. Maybe this is why they didn't feel a prone position was necessary? A bullet will take from 10-15% of my health. Hardly a Tom Clancy feel, so don't expect that. Infamous is another notch above, so you'll maybe want to try that for a bigger challenge. *shrug*

I've already talked about the weapon selection, but here's a bit more detail. There's 4 weapon slots, one for your machete, one for a primary weapon, one for a secondary weapon, and one for a special weapon. A primary weapon counts as shotguns, rifles, sniper rifles, and a grenade launcher. A secondary weapon counts as pistols, or machine pistols. A special weapon would be a machine gun, rocket launcher, or flame thrower. This seems alright, but is actually quite problematic with its restrictions. Because of the slots, no sane player will ever use a shotgun, since it counts as a primary and thus would take over the slot for rifles or sniper rifles, which are far more useful on the wide open African savannah. This is in contrast with Crysis, in which the best combo was often a sniper rifle coupled with a shotgun. In FC2, this combo is impossible, and thus the grenade launcher and shotguns must be neglected, which is a shame. Speaking of the lack of variety compared to a Rainbow Six game, there're only 3 shotguns, 3 assault rifles, a submachine gun, a grenade launcher, and 3 sniper rifles to choose from for the primary slot.

Another annoyance is the fact that throughout the landscape are various checkpoints manned by enemies. Clearing these checkpoints are pretty easy, but the problem is that they are quickly remanned as soon as you leave the area. With all the various traveling you must do in the game, it quickly becomes tedious reclearing the same checkpoints over and over again.

So far, I've been having fun sniping everything in sight. Though many tempting sniping spots are unfortunately out of reach due to the terrain being too steep to climb.

Oh yea... I did notice something really cool while playing earlier today. I'd sniped some guy in the chest but it wasn't a fatal shot so he staggered and fell down. A little later he got up to a crouch and a second enemy ran over and gave him a piggyback ride. No, I'm not kidding. Just thought that was pretty damn awesome.

I'm not against the first game's linear progression, except that Jack Carver for me was completely unlike-able. Anyway, my first impressions of Far Cry 2 were quite good; the graphics are very well-done, the action is intense and the dialogue is well-written. That's just about all the main positives there are. Although the action is entralling and often tactical, the journey between them is arduous and turns into a commute between every mission which quickly turns into grinding. The missions themselves aren't very varied and are just a series of variations of blow up stuff, kill stuff, buy stuff and blow up other stuff. Story is almost entirely non-existent; not even a bare-bones story to give a sense of progression; just a series of disjointed missions interspersed with well-written dialogue. Enemies will also respawn literally minutes after you clear them out from a base, making it feel like a pest-control business rather than an actual conflict. So in short, Far Cry 2 has a lot of potential and succeeds in some areas, but it's just too repetitive and lacking in story to really prove its worth in the long run; wait for a Steam sale before buying it.
